Camera Opinions from anyone?

Q. anyone have any opinions no a camera i should buy, i want to be able to take up to 1-2 hr of video and capture great pictures (12 megapix or more). but i don't want to spend to much money about $150-200.

also aside of that if you have any opinions on waterproof camera's that have the same features. thanks for the help. :)

Answer
If you're talking about still cameras, the duration of video you take depends upon how much storage and spare batteries you have. If you want to, you can swap memory cards if one gets full. Its pointless to have a compact camera which more than 10 mega-pixel. Or otherwise the cameras are going to output noisy image if you're not in a well lit scene. You should focus more on the general quality of the images being output and low-light performance rather than mega-pixel count. Anyway, the following are my recommendations where some of them slightly exceed your budget:
#1 http://reviews.cnet.com/digital-cameras/sony-cyber-shot-dsc/4505-6501_7-33946418.html
#2 http://reviews.cnet.com/digital-cameras/canon-powershot-sx120-is/4505-6501_7-33765882.html
#3 http://reviews.cnet.com/digital-cameras/canon-powershot-a1100-is/4505-6501_7-33528998.html

If you need a waterproof camera for rare occasions, and don't mind about hazy image, just plop any camera into a resealable plastic bag to make it waterproof. Otherwise, you'll need to increase you budget, if you want to buy a good waterproof camera.

waterproof digital cameras...which ones are the best?

guest100

hi there i just returned from a fabulous trip of white water rafting with some friends. i did bring a waterproof camera that hold film 3 rolls of it! the problem? well we had some AWESOME foto opts that were not shot becos of having problems reloading film and then running out of film. i would love to buy a waterproof one but i dont know which are good. plse advise and people who own one are most helpful thanks in advance!!

Answer
For cameras that are waterproof from the start, SeaLife makes some of the best. However, they can be quite pricey. you best bet would be to buy a generic canon/olympus/kodak/nikon compact camera and then buy an underwater case for it (before you buy the camera, do a google search for the case to ensure they make one and that it fits your budget). Most people that dont expect to go completely underwater with their camera for extended periods or take it farther down than say 5-10ft can get away with one of those vinyl bags that seals around the camera (like this one (http://www.keepitdrycase.com/larwatcamcas.html)), but if you will be underwater for long periods or to bigger depths, you need to get a hard plastic/polycarbonate case for your camera(like this one (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3685159&Sku=C930-1450&SRCCODE=GOOGLEBASE&cm_mmc_o=TBBTkwCjCVyBpAgf%20mwzygtCjCVRqCjCVRq). These can get even pricier than the SeaLife option. Most will run you $100-200 and can get higher from there. The case for my Olympus evolt 510 was about $900, but it's expensive because my camera is an SLR, so its a bigger camera with alot more buttons. A case for a compact digicam shouldn't run near that amount.

Looking for a Waterproof Camera Case?

How's My H

It's summer! So that means I'll be going to the beach a lot and I'll be taking a lot of pictures. I did want to invest for a Olympus 1030 SW camera because it's waterproof and I can get more of a kick out of my pictures, but my parents 'value of a dollar' ordeal, my summer job will pay for it in... August.

So instead I'm gonna get use old Kodak digital cam.

Does anybody have a suggestion for a good waterproof digital camera case? Nothing to expensive really... maybe $50 at most?

And if possible, where I can get them... Target, Wal-Mart, etc..

Thanks :]

Answer
I seriously doubt you'll find an underwater case for $50.

Check here to see if you can find something suitable within your budget:

An alternative might be the Minolta Weathermatic Dual 35 which is a 35mm film camera good to 15 feet. Its all auto and has a 2 position lens - 35mm or 50mm. You can find one on eBay for under $50.00.

What is a good digital camera for under $200?

InMyOwnLit

I love photography. I've only ever been able to use disposables though. I want a digital for taking pictures of mainly the woods behind my house. Trees, flowers, insects, stuff like that. Also occasionally of my pets & maybe family. I'd love it to be waterproof & take decent video & audio. I know I'm asking for a lot but its just going to be a hobby/beginner camera. I need clear picture clarity.

I have to pay for this camera myself & sense I don't have a job & had to save up allowance forever that's why it has to be under $200. Later on when I have a job I'll get a better camera. Are the Fujifilm cameras any good? I've read both some good & bad reviews on them. What camera do you think is best to fit my needs? ^_^

Answer
I would consider Canon PowerShot SD1300 IS 12.1 MP Digital Camera
* 28mm wide-angle lens; 4x optical zoom and Optical Image Stabilizer
* Smart AUTO mode intelligently selects from 18 predefined settings
* 12.1-megapixel resolution allows you to print large size images with clarity and detail
* Clear 2.7-inch PureColor System LCD
* Shoot in Low Light mode for dimly-lit situations

Best waterproof camera option?

Megan

I'm about to go on a big family vacation in panama city, Flordia. This will be the second time the whole family has gone and for the first time my sister and my two year old nephew, one year old niece, and two of my second cousins (between 5 and 9 years old) will be going. I absolutely love taking pictures, I am one of those people who can't take enough. So I definitely need to have a camera with me during this vacation. Basically we will be on the beach and at the pool the majority of the time (pretty much every minute that we arent eating or sleeping) so I'm really interested in something water proof.
I have a digital camera already but it isn't water proof. It is a canon powershot SD1400 IS 14.1 mega pixels. I've had it for about a year and a half and love it and don't want to ruin it. I know they say you really shouldnt take your camera on the beach because the sand completely ruins it. We did this vacation 5 years ago and I had a different digital camera then that I took on the beach and it seemed to be fine after word.
I'm thinking about getting a disposable waterproof digital camera (more like 4 of them if I choose that option) I'm not sure if this would be my best bet I've seen mixed reviews some people had good luck with the way their pictures turned out others didn't. Does anyone have a disposable waterproof camera that they recommend? I know the run between roughly $9 to $16 then you have to pay to get them developed and/or get a cd for digital copies (which I would want to do) so idk if it's worth not know what my pictures will turn out like for the price. I know I'll have family members with their cameras too (they'll bring there very nice expensive cameras) for pictures just on the beach so if the pictures from the water didn't turn out I'd still have other vacation pictures (but I would really love some of my own). So basically yay or nay on the disposable and which one do you recomand if yay?
Another option would be buying a waterproof digital camera. I don't really want to spend a ton of money on another camera. My friend got a Fiji film one last year and had issues with it not staying completely sealed and water getting into the camera, so I'm not sure how I feel about them for the price. Any good recomandations on this? I don't own a pool or anything so I wouldn't be using it every day when I'm not on vacation. I love water activites like canoeing and we have a boat but realistically we don't get to go out on it too much with our busy schedules so I would get use out of the camera just probably not as much as I would like to.
Another option would be to buy a waterproof case for my current cannon (powershot sd1400 Is). I'm not sure I they carry one for this camera or how well it would work. I recently bought a groupon for a water proof phone case, it's basically like a little bag you slide your phone in and it seals up. I was soooooooo nervous to put it in the water at first (I have the iPhone) I didn't want to ruin my expensive phone and have to buy another but it ended up working well and I love it for the pool and any time I'm around water with my phone. I can take pictures with it but the qualities only as good as an iPhone photo and you can't use the flash. So if anyone knows anything about waterproof cases and how trustworthy they are. I know I'd be terrified to try it but id feel a little better about it since I have the phone one now.

So basically...
Disposable waterproof cameras?...
New digital waterproof camera?...
Waterproof case for my current digital camera? Or any other ideas suggestions?
I'd also love if anyone has any good recomandations on brands and such
Thanks guys!

Answer
No body reads that long of post...

It seems like buying a waterproof case costs more then the camera. And you are only going to use it once a year?

Looks online you can buy like water poof bags for your camera. I have never tried them, but probably the best option.

underwater camera suggestions?

flower

what underwater camera would you recommend and why, be it an actual underwater camera, or one that requires a separate housing? if it helps i would be shooting mainly action shots (surfing/kite surfing) but also want the option to shoot macro? any suggestions?

Answer
It all depends on how deep into water you want to go. There are a few good waterproof cameras available on the market with a good quality images and video recording. Most of the latest cameras have a good resolution. Some waterproof cameras can even do a panoramic pictures, like Olympus Tough 8010 and Sony TX5.
I would probably suggest you to look into Olympus Tough 8010, Panasonic Lumix T2 and Sony CyberShot TX5.
Sony TX5 is waterproof to 10 ft, when Panasonic TS2 and Olympus Rough 8010 are both waterproof to 33ft. And Sony TX5 has got the lowest resolution from these three. It's just 10.2 megapixels. Panasonic and Olympus have a resolution of 14MP, which is quite a great difference.
All cameras are shock-, dust-, sand- and freeze-proof. But Olympus 8010 is also a crushproof and designed to withstand a weight up to 220 pounds.
Panasonic TS2 has a good quality video recording. Although all these cameras record video in HD format. But Panasonic TS2 seems to be the most expensive out of them.
But if you do not need waterproof camera right now, Sony are releasing a new Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX10 in March/April 2011. It will have a resolution of impressing 16.2 megapixels. And it is going to be the first waterproof camera that can capture 3D still images.
Sony TX5 and TX10 have Sweep Panorama which lines up your pictures really smoothly, even with moving subjects in the scene.
But I can't say much about the macro shooting. Sorry about that.
If you already have a good camera you can check whether there is a waterproof case available specifically made for it.
Hope my answer was helpful.

IS MY CAMERA WATERPROOF?

I have a sony cybershot dec w560: http://www.amazon.com/Sony-Cyber-Shot-DSC-W560-Vario-Tessar-Wide-Angle/dp/B004H8FNM6

I have that same camera and i can tell you it would last about .01 seconds underwater before shorting out and being destroyed.

The best compact digital camera for travel?

Nicole

I'm going to spain this summer and I want a high quality but small enough camera to bring.
What brand do you prefer and WHY? I want a camera that takes good pictures in low lighting (im sure ill take pictures of hotel rooms or in cool resturaunts- as well as at home of my beautiful dog or whatever),
and fast shutter speed, and a good zoom. It also needs to take videos.

I'm not too worried about all the 'waterproof, un breakable, navigator' type of travel cameras as im just going to be walking around spain. Im just looking for quality pictures. My ultimate dream would be to bring around a big SLR nikon d60 or something but... thats way to big. i need a small camera.

so what is the best camera and WHY? pros and cons!

Answer
i recommend Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28S 10.1MP Digital Camera with 18x Wide Angle MEGA Optical Image Stabilized Zoom (Silver)
Full SLR-like manual operations including aperture, shutter, program and full manual modes with Advanced Scene modes , 2.7-inch high-resolution LCD screen; HD video capture , 10.1-megapixel CCD captures enough detail for photo-quality poster-size prints

Can I bring an SLR Camera on the beach or will it ruin it?

Q. I'm going away tomorrow and I am dying to get a Canon SLR or Nikon SLR camera.
Canon- EOS Digital Rebel XS 10.1-Megapixel Digital SLR
NIkon- 10.2-Megapixel Digital SLR Camera

Which camera is better, and if I bring this to the ocean is the salt air going to break it? Or should it be okay?

Answer
Fan Fan,

Cameras are very sensitive electronic devices. And the models you're looking at are expensive enough that you don't want to use them once & have them malfunction. If you get sand or water in your new camera, it will not be covered under the warranty service.

That said, if you are a very very careful person, and don't allow any sand or water to get in, on, or near your camera you certainly can take it to a beach. If you tend to be someone who can be careless, or gets caught up in the excitement of being somewhere & will forget to safeguard the camera, then only take a ruggedized, waterproof camera with you. There are compact models available from diff. manufacturers. Take a camera-specific lens cloth with you to gently wipe the lens if it should get some sea spray on it. You won't want spots on your pics....

The other thing to keep in mind is that the electronics in cameras do not like extremes of temperatures (either hot or cold). So you also have to be careful about not exposing your camera to such or, at least, knowing how to transition the camera between temps so it doesn't develop moisture in its parts. That could be a camera killer.

I hate to sound like a wet blanket, it's always a challenge to buy a new camera & head right out on vacation with it (especially a DSLR) - because you may not be able to easily figure out how to use it in the heat of trying to catch a great shot. Bring a photocopy of some key usage pages from the camera's User Guide with you.

Have a great trip. Good luck.

sorry but "professional" and "low budget" do not go together, especially not for $100 or less.

Your best bet is a decent used point-and-shoot digital camera that can also shoot video, like a Canon Powershot A640. Check the reviews at dpreview.com and keep a look out for the best ones.

digital cameras?

sameh h

which are better sony cybershot or panasonic lumix? If there are better digital cameras please list...price no problem...quality main concern

Answer
As far as cameras are concerned, again, it depends on what you want.

The highest quality Digital cameras are the Digital SLRs, and Pentax makes the best with the K10
( http://www.pentaxslr.com/bodies/k10 ) around $899
-These allow you to swap in and out all Pentax lenses, for professional level photography.

However, you may be looking for something smaller (of the point and shoot variety if you dont want to be swapping lenses or buying separate lenses).

If you want a good quality point and shoot, Cannon offers the PowerShot S5 IS which has one of the best zooms out there (12X Optical & 4x digital for a 48x Zoom) at around $379.99
http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=144&modelid=15207
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8297513&type=product&id=1172881524725

If you want a good waterproof camera, there is the Pentax Optio W30 7.1-Megapixel Digital Camera at around $299.99
http://www.pentaximaging.com/products/product_details/digital_camera--Optio_W30/reqID--9587364/subsection--optio
http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Pentax-Optio-W30-7-1-Megapixel-Digital-Camera/sem/rpsm/oid/189962/catOid/-13062/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do

If durability is a concern, there is the compact Olympus - Stylus 7.1MP Digital Camera 790 SW which is shockproof up to 5 feet and crushproof up to 220 pounds, and freeze and water resistent to a certain degree for around $299.99
http://www.olympusamerica.com/cpg_section/product.asp?product=1314
http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Olympus-Stylus-790-SW-7-1-Megapixel-Digital-Camera-Silver/sem/rpsm/oid/191631/catOid/-13062/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do

So, it really all comes down to what you are looking for. I would suggest going to a BestBuy and/or Circuitcity and checking out some of these cameras before you make a decision on buying.

Best in quality are the Pentax Digital SLRs, 2nd is probably the Cannon Digital SLRs. For point and shoot, if you want quality I'd go with the Canon PowerShot S5 IS.
My sister uses the PowerShot S3 IS (a couple models ago) as a biologist photographing different animals down in the rainforest, and the zoom and quality are unbeatable for a point and shoot in this price range.

If choosing between the sony cybershot or panasonic lumix, I would pick the panasonic since it has the much better total zoom.

Panasonic Lumix FZ50 ($650)
Optical: 12x
Digital: 2x / 4x pre-select (Max. 48x combined with Optical Zoom without Extra Optical Zoom)

DSC-H9 Cyber-shot® Digital Camera ($429.99)
Optical Zoom 15X
Digital Zoom 0-2.0X (Precision) -which equals 30x combined zoom)

Here are reviews on both the and the PowerShot S5 IS that I mentioned earlier and the Panasonic Lumix FZ50, so that you can get a little bit of a comparison:

http://reviews.cnet.com/digital-cameras/panasonic-lumix-dmc-fz50s/4505-6501_7-31975860.html?tag=prod.txt.1

And here is one for the Sony CyberShot:

Camera Feature for Screen Clarity?

REBECCA

What is the feature on a digital underwater camera that determines the visibility of the screen in bright sunlight? Where can I find that feature rated on various competitive cameras?
Thx

Answer
I guess the brightness could be rated in lumens, but I have never seen ratings given for screen brightness nor any comparison for that feature. All LCDs are pretty bad in bright sunlight. The best you can do is pick the highest resolution LCD and look for an LCD hood to protect it from the sun, like this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Maxsima-Protector-Screen-Cover-shade/dp/B003NMTK3A/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1351269637&sr=8-8

Mind you, LCD brightness seems a particularly strange criteria for selecting a camera, particularly an underwater one. Image quality, waterproofing and depth of waterproofing should be far more important.

Good waterproof/underwater digital camera, $200 or under?

Melody:)

I've been looking for a waterproof/underwater digital camera online. I've found them as low as the low 100's with horrible reviews. The only one I've found with good reviews is the Olympus - Stylus Tough 14.0-Megapixel and it's $300, which I cant afford. (I'm 15, it's an early birthday present from my mom so I can have it in time to go on vacation)

Could someone please recommend me one with good picture quality above and under water, that's no more than $200?

Best picture quality waterproof camera under £200?

Katy B

I want to get a camera as I'm currently borrowing my Dads when I need it. I'm doing Geology in college and later on, in Uni so need a camera which doesnt mind being dropped into puddles or rock pools and can withstand being dropped a bit. I've come across a few cameras, but I'm having trouble getting reliable reviews of them which definitively tell me the quality of the prints created. I guess that photo quality isnt the top priority (I'd rather have it waterproof and of slightly less photo quality) but I want it to be as good as it can be in the budget.

where can i buy an underwater video/picture camera?

Q. i would like to find a camera that shoots video and pictures under water. Im having a pool party for graduation and I think it would be cool.

Answer
Hi Rachel Portillo,
You can buy underwater video/picture camera on Amazon.
I recommend Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS2 14.1 MP Waterproof Digital Camera with 4.6x
Optical Image Stabilized Zoom with 2.7-Inch LCD
Advanced Tough Design
AVCHD Lite HD Movie Recording
The DMC-TS2 is shockproof, waterproof, dustproof and newly added freezeproof in design
It lets you shoot actively while moving around with the camera in one hand.
If the camera gets dirty, soil and dust can be washed off by using water.

Best underwater/ night vision video camera?

Hi I'm looking to capture some amazing photography and video and iv always wanted to capture underwater pictures or video and night vision as well. Is there a camera out there that has both of these or one of them? Also what's the cheapest one because I bet they are expensive!

Answer
Underwater issues are different from night vision. We don't know how deep you want to go. There are two ways to deal with night vision (infrared capable or light amplifier).

If by "underwater" you mean deeper than the backyard pool (10 feet, fresh clear water) and are referring to either ocean or lake diving that gets dark starting around 20 feet deep. Generally, providing light is accomplished by using external underwater lighting. Very bright. Very waterproof. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt=sealife+light&N=0&InitialSearch=yes&sts=ma&Top+Nav-Search=

Generally, an "underwater camcorder" is not used. The selected camcorder is placed in an underwater housing that is rated to a certain depth. The deeper the rating, the more "waterproof" the casing needs to be, and the housing gets more expensive. For a decent housing, it is not surprising to have it cost more than the camera.

If by underwater, you mean backyard pool (10 feet, fresh clear water), then pretty much any consumer camcorder that has an underwater rating should be fine... assuming it is a nice bright day or the pool light is on (at night). You can also place the camcorder in an underwater housing. The converse of the depth rating is that if used only for shallow environments, they are not very expensive.

If you shop Sony.com, you will see they have a couple underwater housings (i.e., SPK-AS1) as compared to third party underwater housings http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ntt=equinox+underwater+housing&N=0&InitialSearch=yes&sts=ma&Top+Nav-Search=

Then there is the whole night vision thing. As far as I know, there are two currently available camcorders (new) with built-in infrared emitter: one from Bell & Howell that is not water proof and the Sony HVR-A1 (also not waterproof). Other consumer (and prosumer) camcorders without an infrared emitter will not be able to record monochrome video under zero visible light conditions - they usually have an IR filter that cannot be removed.

Light amplifiers (or light intensifiers) make use of available light as opposed to adding infrared light. Astroscope makes good ones. They are not inexpensive.

(details included) What Are Some Good Waterproof Cameras?

I like to do Photography, take photos of my family and myself, and my pets and there are a lot of moving things and i would like it to be waterproof so i can take photos underwater. :) Thanks, Bexx. <3

Answer
The leader in underwater and rugged cameras in general is Olympus, they have several Stylus models that would be good. I use the inexpensive Stylus 550wp, it is a decent general purpose camera, very slim and easy to use. Canon has just brought out their version of the waterproof camera, D10, at twice the price.

Being waterproof is not just for swimming, but boating where you get spray, and just this week i could get out in the mist for a rainbow picture. The stylus is a rugged design, it has also survived my rock climbing outings.

should i get a flip mino/ultra hd or the nikon coolpix s8100?
i really want the best video quality. the nikon has 1080p but the flip has 70p at 60fps

Answer
Olympus Stylus Tough, it is freezeproof, shockproof, waterproof to 33 feet, and very sturdy. I believe it is HD video and takes great stills and video. I'm only waiting until I have a bit more cash, then I buy one.

Which video camera/camcorder 1080p60fps, optical zoom...? PLEASEE?

Cesare

Hello. I need your help please!
I need a Video camera with / that can:
1) be waterproof
2) has Optical Zoom more than 15x
3) good resolution with low light
4) 1080p 60fps and more
5) cost less than 400 dollars.
I was thinking to buy a Gopro hero 3+ but finally I won't because it has not zoom!!!!

Sorry for the possible wrong english but I'm an exchange student!
thank you!

Answer
You're asking for a lot for very little money. As I was reading this I was thinking of the panasonic AG-AC160a, but then I saw your $400 limit. I would suggest prioritizing what you want in a camera and buying what you can (while sacrificing other features). You might have to settle for a gopro and buy a second camera that has the optical zoom you're looking for. 1080p@60fps is going to be a rare find under $400.

Good luck

What is there to do at the Pagsanjan Fall, Philippines?

lisasabrin

We will be there in a few days..What can I expect, and appropriately what should I wear?

Answer
Please wear what is comfortable for you.

°A bathing suit under your tank top, shorts is fine. You can remove the tank top and/ or shorts if you are comfortable with it.
°If you have aqua shoes, please wear it. It will protect your feet from the stones and will give you a better footing (grip on the slippery walkway).
°Waterproof camera (the disposable ones work fine).
°A towel, comb, fresh change of clothes.
°Money for tips; the boatmen earn via tips.

Happy travels.

Is photography worth getting into?

Tyger

I'm a very artistic person. I love trying new things and expressing my creativity in many ways including painting, music, poetry and lately- photography. I bought a camera on my trip to the philippines last summer and I had a great time taking candid photos of the natives and capturing the spirit of this beautiful country. However on the last few weeks of the trip, my camera broke and I missed out on some amazing shoots.

Now my dilemma is; if I'm going to get into photography- I want a camera that will last. I'm looking into the Olympus Stylus tough 6000 which is waterproof/shockproof/freeze-proof you name it- which would surely fit my active lifestyle on my trips to the beach or up to mountains.

Now my question is, despite the few hundred I would spending on this camera- would it be worth it to get into photography itself? Or should I settle with a lesser camera and not worry about being a "Photographer" since I already do so much and may not have time to commit myself to the trade.

I'm looking for your personal experiences. Some inspiration into what it means to be a photographer rather then just being a guy/girl snapping photos. What are your views of photography as an art form and what inspires you?

Answer
I would say yes, a camera is invaluable. Maybe to get started don't think of it as a 'commitment', it should be something you enjoy, something that comes easy to you, for just those moments where you spot something beautiful or interesting and you can photograph it.

For me photography came as an accident, i was already artistically driven but i was given a camera as a present and it was the best present i've ever had.

Anyway to round up, instead of driving yourself mainly towards photography, pick it up as a hobby first, just take a camera out with you always and shoot things that appeal to you. That way your not totally committing to one project.

Durable, highly waterproof quality camera?

Karl M

Hi, I'm going to be working in Jamaica for the next couple years and I need a camera I can have with me at all times. Lightweight is a must; especially since my only two modes of travel are going to be walking and boat, and I will be moving around A LOT. Besides the boats and inevitable rain you can expect near pretty constant 100% humidity.

While the pictures don't need to be professional quality they can't look terrible either.

Suggestions under 500 USD please and if you know of something significantly cheaper that would fit please post!

Oh ya compact is essential, no DSLR's please.

Answer
I have an Olympus 6020. Its waterproof, crushproof, shock proof and freezeproof. I went on my honeymoon to the Bahamas and surrounding areas. I took it in the ocean every chance I got. It takes great pictures and I love it. They're about $200. And well worth it.

Im going on a mission trip to a childrens home in honduras, this is my second year and im wanting to get a good camera to get more pictures of my babies this year(: we go swimming in rivers and lagoons alot and i just worry carrying a regular didgital camera around in such a rough enviroment. I want a sturdy digital camera that still takes good quality pictures, not blurry an dull(: does anyone have any information or reccomendations?

Answer
Would you be open to considering a waterproof digital camcorder rather than a waterproof digital camera? Reason being, I actually just bought this Sanyo waterproof camcorder, http://www.digitalimaginghq.com/sanyo-vpcwh1bl-blue-hd-waterproof-flash-memory-digital-camcorder.html for a few trips that I have planned this summer. I've only used it a few times, but I have used it during a recent canoe trip and it took very great video, but also does allow you to take still shocks. It may be work considering since you mentioned you were looking for something, waterproof and durables, as it sure help up during our camping trip where we were in an out of the waters and our boats. What are some good waterproof digital cameras?

frecklefac

I've always thought it was a really cool idea, and lately I've been looking into getting one. I've looked at some from Canon and Olympus. I'm leaning towards Canon's D10 because it gets good reviews, is slightly cheaper than Olympus models, and because I really like Canon cameras.
Anyone that owns this camera or another waterproof camera-
Is it good price considering that it would only get moderate use?
Do you recommend this camera, or another one?
Would I be better off getting a waterproof case for my current camera (a Canon powershot a570)?

Thanks so much!

Answer
Here are 5 top rated waterproof cameras:

1. Canon PowerShot D10

$330, 12.1MP; 3X optical zoom; waterproof to 33 feet
Canonâs first foray into waterproof digital compacts looks like a cross between a Digital ELPH and a diving bell. With a waterproof rating down to 33 feet, itâs among the deepest divers in this category, but its 2.5-inch LCD and optically stabilized 35â105mm (equivalent) f/2.8â4.9 zoom lens arenât at the front of this pack. Like the other cameras here, the D10 is freeze- and shockproof, in this case surviving temperatures down to 14 degrees Fahrenheit and falls of up to 4 feet.

2. Fujifilm Finepix Z33WP

$200, 10MP; 3X optical zoom; waterproof to 10 feet
Borrowing design cues from Fujiâs teen-targeted Z30, this underwater shooter is one of the tiniest and most stylish, as well as the most affordable. Its 2.7-inch LCD is as large as they come on this type of compact. But itâs waterproof only to 10 feet, and its 10MP and 35â105mm (equivalent) f/3.7â4.2 optical zoom arenât groundbreaking.

3. Olympus Stylus Tough 8000

$400, 12MP; 3.6X optical zoom; waterproof to 33 feet
Olympus offers some of the most rugged compact cameras you can get, and its latest fits the mold. You can shoot down to 33 feet underwater, drop the camera from up to 6.6 feet, and use it in temperatures down to 14 degrees Fahrenheit. Plus, its metal construction can withstand up to 220 pounds of pressure. Sensorshift image stabilization combats hand shake, and the zoom, while not league-leading, spans an equivalent 28â102mm f/3.5â5.1.

4. Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS1

$400, 12.1MP; 4.6X optical zoom; waterproof to 10 feet
Panasonic has stepped up to the pool in a strong way with its first waterproof digital camera. Its optically stabilized 28â128mm (equivalent) f/3.3â5.9 zoom offers a nice balance of wide angle for underwater and midrange tele for land-based adventures. At 12.1MP, it affords plenty of resolution, and it has an ample 2.7-inch LCD. While we wish it could go deeper than 10 feet, its 720p video recording should make playing in the backyard pool more fun than ever.

5. Pentax Optio W60

$250, 10MP; 5X optical zoom; waterproof to 13 feet
Pentax was one of the first to offer dunkable digital cameras with its WP series years ago, and now itâs a major force. This model has plenty of room to the left of the lens to hold onto, and we like the 720p video recording, though weâd rather have a faster rate than its 15 frames per second. Its Super Macro mode should be a boon below the surface, letting you focus as close as 0.4 inches from the front of the 28â140mm (equivalent) f/3.5â5.5 lens.

Waterproof, edit, & inexpensive camera? need thoughts on what kind of camera I should get.?

Kaitlyn

Lately I've really been wanting a good camera. I had one a few years ago that is very old & doesn't have edits & such. I want a camera that is:
-waterproof
-has focus & zoom
-edits like for blemishes on faces.
-inexpensive, like less than 400 or 500 dollars.
(even if there is one that has no waterproofing, than I would like to see those too. waterproof isn't my top priority & I can just get those waterproof cases)
Thanks so much for commenting & showing me cameras! (:

Answer
A waterproof camera withing your budget is easy.

Retouching (what you are calling edits) is done in post production.

ALL cameras are auto-focus and have zoom lenses within your budget.

Here is one that has what you want and includes GPS

http://www.nikonusa.com/Nikon-Products/Product/Compact-Digital-Cameras/26293/COOLPIX-AW100.html

There are a few such cameras also made by Fujifilm, Pentax and Canon

You will have to visit a shop that sells them and see which you like the best

Best waterproof camera that runs on AA batteries?

hunter

I know i already asked what the best waterproof camera is but since im going to be doing the NOLS program there will be no electricity to charge it so whats the best of the best waterproof camera that runs on batteries? something under 1,000$

Answer
Most quality digital cameras don't run on AA batteries these days. Instead they run on camera specific lithium ion or lithium poly batteries which hold much more charge and energy, thus lasting longer. I would suggest just buying several batteries if you aren't going off for THAT long of a time. It is more practical and has more uses. What happens when the trip is over?

The other option would be to buy several waterproof disposable cameras.

What is a good quality camera that isn't too expensive?

Wishful Th

I've been wanting to get a new camera and since I'm planning to go to Puerto Rico soon, I really need to make sure I have one soon. Right now, I just use the camera on my phone, which isn't a bad camera. It actually takes some pretty good pictures. However, I don't want to wear down the battery of my phone with tons of pictures. And the camera I did have, was a cheaper one (was a gift) and it's been knocked around so many times, I doubt it works anymore.

What I need is something good. A good quality camera. Something that I can take shots at night as well would be nice. I'll be taking lots of pictures of nature, sunrises/sets, people, etc so I need something that can handle all of that. Also durable since I tend to drop... everything. If it's waterproof, that would be awesome. And ablity to upload pictures on my computer and/or print as well would be awesome too. ^_^

I don't want to spend a lot of money, but I don't want something cheap that falls apart the moment you look at it. And I don't want something too big and clunky because I don't want to carry around a bunch of stuff either.

I have a couple months before I go to Puerto Rico, so I do have time to save up and look around. I want to know what's good, what's a good deal and what's good quality. Tell me what you like, what you don't like, what you think I should get, and so on. Anything and everything. If you could, please include prices and/or pictures/links to the camera so I can see it as well and know how much to save up. Thanks much in advance!

Answer
I've sold cameras at a couple of different places, and I know that choosing a camera is a pretty personal thing. Its not just because of marketing that there are some many cameras out there!

Start by setting a price range to narrow down your search. Remember, electronics don't really have resell value, so spending more than you need will never pay off. On the other hand, getting a camera that falls short (or falls apart) means you'll want a new camera sooner, meaning spending more money.

Get a pad of paper out, and start listing what you haven't liked about prior camera. Look at old photos, and see what about them falls short. Look at where most of your photos were taken and think about where you spend most of your time. This will help you determine what you are going to need in a camera. - the basic features are

Megapixels - Ignore this unless you like to do a lot of after shooting editing (photoshop etc) or make lots of very large (bigger than 8x10) prints. All cameras on the market seem to be 10mp or higher.
Zoom- Look at optical zoom. 3x is the most common. ignore digital zoom, and avoid using it. It tends to mess up more photos than it helps. A good zoom is useful for photographing animals and for getting candid shots. This quickly adds to the price though.
Battery - Does it take AA batteries or Lithium ion. AA is great for long trips when you can't charge your camera. However, extra lithium batteries run for under $20 bucks (get name brand) and last longer, so I avoid AAs.
Cards - SD is usually the best bet. Most computers have a built in reader for them. This shouldn't be a deal breaker, but since most cameras use them, its nice to be able to loan your SD cards to a friend, or quickly upload your shots to someone else's computer.

You should stop by a few stores and play with the cameras. Figure out what feels good in your hand and will fit your lifestyle (ie. purse, pocket, bag etc). A high traffic Best Buy can be a great place to see what will break on your camera. Week points become apparent on display cameras pretty quickly. Pick them all up, listen for glitches, see how quickly they can shoot. If you have an SD card, sharpey your name on it, and bring it too so you can actually shoot. Play with the menu, it should feel intuitive to you to do the basics. Bring your pad of paper with you, and take lots of notes of model numbers, prices and what you liked, disliked.

Now that you have an idea of what is out there, and what you will want to do three searches for each camera. First on CNET to see a video and read the highlights of the cameras you're interested in. Next, get on Amazon and bring up each camera for CNET that you've liked. Pay attention to 'similar' cameras on CNET and Amazon to add to your list. The final search is the name of the camera and "problems" or "trouble shooting." This will give you an idea of real world issues. You can also google "sample photos from" or "sample videos" to see how they work. Flickr has a great camera finder (see link below)

After this is all done, you should have a handful of favorite cameras. Now is a good time to go to RitzCamera, or a higher end camera store, and really get to play with the camera a bit. (also check with friends to borrow their camera for a day, if you're lucky enough that they have one you're looking at). Does the camera feel sturdy or cheap? Can you hold the camera comfortably?

Take one last look online at sample videos, make sure none of the issues the camera has will be a deal breaker, and its time to buy! Make sure you get a case, and avoid the warranty (or find a comprehensive plan that covers drops, spills and being run over by a car - see it in writing before you buy! I think Ritz may still do this type of plan)

I spent the last month doing research- I'm going on vacation in May, and wanted a small fast camera that works well in low light, has a bit of zoom and was under 300. I went with the NikonS8100, and was not disappointed. Amazon sells it for $228, it can fit in a jacket pocket comfortably, has 10x zoom and start to first shot is amazingly fast. They put in a full CMOS sensor (the 'film' of a digital camera) that is the size of a DSLR (big camera)'s sensor, so it performs amazingly in low light.

digital cameras?

sameh h

which are better sony cybershot or panasonic lumix? If there are better digital cameras please list...price no problem...quality main concern

Answer
As far as cameras are concerned, again, it depends on what you want.

The highest quality Digital cameras are the Digital SLRs, and Pentax makes the best with the K10
( http://www.pentaxslr.com/bodies/k10 ) around $899
-These allow you to swap in and out all Pentax lenses, for professional level photography.

However, you may be looking for something smaller (of the point and shoot variety if you dont want to be swapping lenses or buying separate lenses).

If you want a good quality point and shoot, Cannon offers the PowerShot S5 IS which has one of the best zooms out there (12X Optical & 4x digital for a 48x Zoom) at around $379.99
http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=144&modelid=15207
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8297513&type=product&id=1172881524725

If you want a good waterproof camera, there is the Pentax Optio W30 7.1-Megapixel Digital Camera at around $299.99
http://www.pentaximaging.com/products/product_details/digital_camera--Optio_W30/reqID--9587364/subsection--optio
http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Pentax-Optio-W30-7-1-Megapixel-Digital-Camera/sem/rpsm/oid/189962/catOid/-13062/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do

If durability is a concern, there is the compact Olympus - Stylus 7.1MP Digital Camera 790 SW which is shockproof up to 5 feet and crushproof up to 220 pounds, and freeze and water resistent to a certain degree for around $299.99
http://www.olympusamerica.com/cpg_section/product.asp?product=1314
http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Olympus-Stylus-790-SW-7-1-Megapixel-Digital-Camera-Silver/sem/rpsm/oid/191631/catOid/-13062/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do

So, it really all comes down to what you are looking for. I would suggest going to a BestBuy and/or Circuitcity and checking out some of these cameras before you make a decision on buying.

Best in quality are the Pentax Digital SLRs, 2nd is probably the Cannon Digital SLRs. For point and shoot, if you want quality I'd go with the Canon PowerShot S5 IS.
My sister uses the PowerShot S3 IS (a couple models ago) as a biologist photographing different animals down in the rainforest, and the zoom and quality are unbeatable for a point and shoot in this price range.

If choosing between the sony cybershot or panasonic lumix, I would pick the panasonic since it has the much better total zoom.

Panasonic Lumix FZ50 ($650)
Optical: 12x
Digital: 2x / 4x pre-select (Max. 48x combined with Optical Zoom without Extra Optical Zoom)

DSC-H9 Cyber-shot® Digital Camera ($429.99)
Optical Zoom 15X
Digital Zoom 0-2.0X (Precision) -which equals 30x combined zoom)

Here are reviews on both the and the PowerShot S5 IS that I mentioned earlier and the Panasonic Lumix FZ50, so that you can get a little bit of a comparison:

http://reviews.cnet.com/digital-cameras/panasonic-lumix-dmc-fz50s/4505-6501_7-31975860.html?tag=prod.txt.1

And here is one for the Sony CyberShot:

what does 30 frames per sec mean for digi camera?

Boo

I saw something that said 30 frames per second for canon powershot d10

does this mean you only get 30 seconds of video at a time?

also, in comparison to those two underwater digital cameras, (i'm not tech savvy, i just know good quality pictures when i see them) which has better chance of good pics at night time and of action shots?

http://tech.spotcoolstuff.com/waterproof-camera-review/olympus-stylus-tough-8000-vs-canon-powershot-d10

works cited:
canon
http://tech.spotcoolstuff.com/waterproof-camera-review/olympus-stylus-tough-8000-vs-canon-powershot-d10

Answer
30 frames per second means basically that it takes 30 snapshots every second to give you the video. You can film for as long as you want. Big-budget films shoot on film or transfer to film before distribution, and film plays at 30 FPS (Frames per second.) The camera is saying that it will make your video look more like a "Hollywood" film. Basically, the camera takes video that isn't choppy.
As for your camera choice dilemma, I would probably pick the Canon. Actually, I would definitely pick the Canon. It's better for low-light, and the focus is slightly faster.

The Sanyo Xacti waterproof digital camcorder/camera is soooo adorable! I could not believe how SMALL it was when it arrived. My husband likes to film underwater when snorkeling. Previously we used our Sony Camcorder with a "waterproof housing" that was very bulky to travel with, plus a "dive light". Wow, with this baby we are traveling light! You don't need a dive light with the included video editing software, you can adjust the colors to remove the "blue" tint.

The camera is also fantastic for using in the rain, at the beach or the pool - you don't have to worry about it getting a little wet. The camera quality is about what you'd expect - not HD quality but fine for home movies, YouTube, etc. You can bring multiple SD cards with you for tons of recording time - this is much more convenient than the miniDV tapes. I can directly import photos and videos into iTunes and put them on my iPod touch, which is SO convenient. I can't say enough great things about the Sanyo Xacti camera. It's adorable, functional - all in all, a great gadget!

Picking a waterproof camera?

Nick B

Ok, so in about 6 months I am going on a trip to Belize and want to bring a good camera. I have several things i am looking at:
good megapixels
very good macro setting
waterproof for at least 10 feet
shockproof
a wide angle mode or something like that

I don't know much about cameras, but I'm thinking macro and wide angle might be counter-intuituve (can only one, not both).
I want the good macro for the cool insects, plants, etc we come upon.
I want the waterproof for two reasons: its a rainforest; and we will be going snorkeling

As far as the snorkeling, i don't think we will be going deep so water proof doesn't need to be too deep. I also was thinking a wide angle mode wold be nice to take photos of the reefs and sea life while snorkeling.

So far i've been looking and have narrowed my main consideration down to the Pentax Optio W90 (http://www.pentaximaging.com/digital-camera/Optio_W90_Black/) and the Olympus Stylus Tough 6020 (http://www.olympusamerica.com/cpg_section/product.asp?product=1496)

I will consider other options but these are what I'm thinking of so far

Answer
Out of these two Olympus Stylus Tough 6020 is a better option to go with but I would even suggest you Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS1 12MP Digital Camera with 4.6x Wide Angle MEGA Optical Image Stabilized Zoom

so far iv only found PowerShot D10 is there anymore, that are good
and i hear the PowerShot D10 comes with different color plates what are they?
and thing that is good or bad about the PowerShot D10 please mention!

thxx!

Answer
Actually that is a very good camera because it has awesome picture quality, and there is a bad side to that, the cost. It cost more than any other waterproof camera. There are many others but I think the best for the cost and the colors (you want more colors), is the Fujifilm FinePix Z33WP, which comes in five color green, pink, blue, and black. This has 10 megapixels 3x optical zoom. It has more things which you can read about in the second link below. If you have money for the D10 then get that one but if you want a cheaper yet still good waterproof then get the FinePix Z33WP.

This summer I'm going snorkeling for a few weeks in the Great Barrier Reef and I would love to get some great underwater photos. I have a Nikon D7000. Is there a certain kind of case I put around it to take underwater (this may sound completely ridiculous)? If not, what are some semi-high quality but affordable (under $300) underwater cameras?

Answer
The spacial waterproof cases for Nikon are quite expensive. Sometimes it is easier to buy waterproof camera instead.
Latest waterproof cameras are quite good. On very rare occasions they come faulty, but the same is with regular digital cameras.
If you want camera, that makes good quality pictures on land or underwater, then I would suggest to look into these three cameras: Sony TX5, Panasonic Lumix TS2 and Olympus Rough 8010.
And all three of them cost less than $300 on Amazon.
You just need to decide which features you need more:
Sony TX5 is waterproof to 10 ft, when Panasonic TS2 and Olympus Rough 8010 are both waterproof to 33ft. And Sony TX5 has got the lowest resolution from these three. It's just 10.2 megapixels. Panasonic and Olympus have a resolution of 14MP, which is quite a great difference.
All cameras are shock-, dust-, sand- and freeze-proof. But Olympus 8010 is also a crushproof and designed to withstand a weight up to 220 pounds.
Sony TX5 gives you the opportunity to capture panoramic pictures with it's Sweep Panorama feature. Your images are automatically stitched together, which gives you the extra-wide view of the scenery.
Olympus 8010 has got the panoramic shooting option too. It also comes with a built-in 2GB memory, which is more than most cameras available on the market.
Panasonic TS2 has a good quality video recording. Although all these cameras record video in HD format. But Panasonic TS2 seems to be the most expensive out of them.
But if you do not need waterproof camera right now, Sony are releasing a new Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX10 in April 2011. It will have a resolution of impressing 16.2 megapixels. And it is going to be the first waterproof camera that can capture 3D still images. You can pre-order this camera and it costs $330.

what underwater camera would you recommend and why, be it an actual underwater camera, or one that requires a separate housing? if it helps i would be shooting mainly action shots (surfing/kite surfing) but also want the option to shoot macro? any suggestions?

Best camera option for camping and scuba diving?

Chief

I´m getting ready for a camping trip to the Amazon Rainforest and later to a Scuba Diving marathon in Santa Marta, Colombia. I currently use a Canon T3i DSLR camera as my main camera, but because of its size and sheer fragility I have opted not to take it with me.

Originally I was planning to buy a waterproof case for my iPhone as it was the cheapest option, but this wouldn't allow me to take pictures while Scuba diving.

I am an amateur photographer, but I do like quality and so I was thinking about buying a GoPro Hero 3+, but after reading reviews it was obvious the audio quality was is not very good at all. I am now thinking of buying a Canon G16 camera which would allow me to have more control on the overall camera, as well as being able to Scuba dive with it if I bought the Canon Waterproof Case WP-DC52. The downside of this camera is that I can not seem to find a suitable case for it to be protected while I'm in the Amazon.

Please I would like for this community to suggest any cameras and/or gear for the things I already have so that I can take great pictures of my trip!

Thank you.

Answer
I think you are wise to leave the T3i at home, most likely it wouldn't survive.

Maybe your best bet is one of the waterproof cameras. Most companies make at least one model, and Olympus has several in its tough series. Here is a list of the ones that Popular Photography featured in their April edition.
Popular Photography â April 2013
Sony Cyber-shot TF1 - $198 (need reviews)
Fujifilm FinePix XP60 - $198
Pentax WG-3 GPS - $297
Nikon Coolpix AW110 - $347
Olympus Stylus TG-2 - $379
Panasonic Lumix TS5 - $399

Waterproof Camera Case?

(:K:)

I have a Nikon Coolpix L22 Digital Camera and I am looking for a floatable waterproof case that makes it where i can take my camera with me in the water and video things. Keep in mind i want to be able to use my camera while having the case on. Price should be affortable also and for me thats not more than $30.00. Please provide links to anything that meets my discription. All help is appriciated. Thank You.

Answer
A common problem with underwater housing is the photo quality. Because your camera is more or less in a plastic bag, the photos you take are distorted. (Please note that putting your camera in a plastic bag WILL destroy it.) The cheap, unreliable plastic housing for your camera is over your budget by about $20.00. It's cheap, and you get what you pay for, I guess. Why risk your camera?

Your best bet would be to invest in a waterproof camera. These can obviously be used out of water, too. The Fuji preforms very well -- up to 10FT in water. It is wonderful out of water as well, with plenty of settings. I have not tried the Olympus, but it is a reputable brand, and is on an incredible sale. Either camera would suit you well.

I know that this isn't what you asked for, but I had this same problem, and found that waterproof housing is expensive! This is your best option. Good luck!

Worth it to sell my digital camera and get another one? Or just buy a waterproof bag?

Kae

The Aquapac (waterproof bag) I need is about $40 and the camera I would buy is about $70. I bought my camera for (I think...) around $299 2, 2 1/2 years ago. However, I also found a waterproof case for cameras that's only $15. So I could buy that and risk it, buy the nicer waterproof bag and spend almost as much on it as I would on a new camera, or just get the new camera.

And there's also the question of selling my camera (for around $150-200 I think. Is that a good range to consider selling for? Something in there?)... I don't use it very often unless I'm taking snapshots or something. Otherwise (much more often) I just use my dad's Nikon D40. I still have my old (albeit beaten up) digital camera. So I could just use that in an waterproof bag I guess...

Cheapest option would be to get the cheaper bag and hope it works. Most expensive would be to buy a new camera. And then there's selling my camera..... I don't really want to unless I'm getting a new one, so.... Ugh. I'm so confused. What should I do? I hope I didn't confuse anyone too much... :/

Answer
I would not trust a $15 waterproof case.

As far as how much you should sell your camera for, It is really going to depend on the brand, model, and specs. The prices can vary a great deal. $150 sounds reasonable, but more info is needed. Check on Ebay for what that current price of that model is.

Probably the water proof bag is the best way

Considering buying a newegg open box olympus waterproof camera? Opinions?

Rachel

I am considering buying the OLYMPUS Stylus 550WP Blue 10.0 MP 2.5" LCD 3X Optical Zoom Waterproof Digital Camera with the open box policy from newegg. Would this be a mistake? Would the camera somehow not be waterproof?? It would be a savings of $40 if I bought it the open box way. Is it worth the risk?

Answer
Newegg is a highly rated site with very high levels of customer satisfaction.

Buying open box is always a risk because that means that someone has been in that box. Was the camera removed? Did someone shoot photos with it? Does it carry the full maker's warranty? Did some one handle or mishandle the camera? All these are valid questions.

With newegg's high ratings however, you'll probably be safe. However I still believe you'd be better off not saving the $40 and buy new.

These kinds of deals can be so tempting but... who really knows besides newegg - I don't and I don't think you do either.

Good Luck

I have narrowed down my choices to a couple of cameras but they're different versions. Here are my choices:

Canon-Powershot 8.0 MP Digital ELPH Camera- Blue/Brown/Silver/Gold/Pink (SD1100IS)
Kodak- EasyShare 10.2 MP Digital Camera - Pink (V1003)
Sony Cybershot 8.1 MP Digital Camera - Black (DSC-T70/B)

******And any other cameras that you might suggest would be helpful!****

Answer
You should take a look at the Olympus SW 850.

http://www.olympusamerica.com/cpg_section/product.asp?product=1365&fl=4

About $250 from Newegg.com
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16830111203&nm_mc=OTC-Froogle&cm_mmc=OTC-Froogle-_-Digital+Cameras-_-Olympus+America-_-30111203

It's a very cool camera, and it is an extremely tough little camera, which your parents should consider. It's a little more expensive than your choices, but the SW 860 is:
Drop proof from 5 feet.
Waterproof to 10 feet underwater
Freeze proof and crush proof.
No extendable lens to bang and break.

In the long run, this camera will last a lot longer than the others, which are fragile in comparison.

Cool features:
When shooting a multiple picture panorama, this camera can put it together by itself. No need to load it onto your computer along with some software. You can take it swimming with no worries.

Why do I recommend this camera? Take a look through Yahoo Answers. There are lots of people asking how can they fix their broken cameras that have been dropped, gotten wet and so on.
Since you are about to become a teenager, you are probably more active than the average person, and that will naturally be a little rough on a camera.

Answer
Waterproof cameras scare me because I hear FAR too often about leaks, even when they are brand new.

Apparently it is very easy to catch a tiny hair or some other object in one of the seals (e.g. the battery / memory card door), and that is enough to let water in.

I'd suggest buying extra warranty protection and trying it out pretty much right away if you intend to go swimming with it.

Also, waterproof cameras are most often little P&S ones with tiny sensors, so don't expect any amazing results from them.

Does anyone have the Canon waterproof camera?

Vampire_Mo

http://www.amazon.com/Canon-PowerShot-D10-Waterproof-Stabilized/dp/B001SER460/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1278855149&sr=8-1

I am thinking of buying this, but I have a few questions:

Do they take good pictures? I am kinda trying to be a photographer so would like to be able to take really good pictures. I already have a canon digital that's 10 mega pixels that can take great pics.

Can you zoom out far?

Does it take detailed close ups?

is it worth the money?

And any other opinions on it would be great, thanks!

Answer
If you're taking photographs, you ARE a photographer...but this camera is not aimed at the professional market.
Check the quality of the pictures at the D10 flickr group (there's always a flickr group)...
http://www.flickr.com/groups/canond10/
Click on a thumbnail to go to the photo's page and then on "Actions" and select "all sizes" for a big image.

Not a particularly long zoom range...remember that the zoom has to be contained within the waterproof case. All the waterproof cameras have wide-to-short-telephoto zooms.

Macro lets you get to an inch or so from your subject.

Yes, it's worth the money (though I'd prefer an Olympus Tough).

Good Waterproof Cameras?

Nikki

I'm looking for a water proof camera. I've had two so far a kodak playsport and a JVC. They both broke within 6 months to a year. I'm looking for a camera thats strong and will take good pictures and videos in and out of water. Doesn't have to be SLR level but I want it nice.

I've been looking at:
Nikon coolpix aw100
Canon D20
Olympus Tough TG-1

If anyone knows anything about these cameras you can tell me. Or if you have another recommendation for a camera, you can tell me that too. Thanks.

I have a Panasonic TS3 (the predecessor of the TS4). Not great, but not bad. The autofocus does a lot of hunting. If it is pointed at the sun, there is a lot of blooming. I think demo video that I have seen for the GoPro hero looks better. However, every video that I have seen has overlaid music, and I have seen reviews that say the waterproof case muffles sound. The Panasonic TS3 can capture sound even in water. Emerging from water, it sounds a bit muffled for about two seconds until the water drains from the mic, but then it's okay. It does magnify wind noise, and the wind cut setting does nothing.
Here are some samples.
A lot of wind noise in this one:

An actual event, not just a test. As you can tell, I like to do real-time narration from the water:

A swimming pool test. This one shows you what I mean by blooming:

What are some good waterproof digital cameras?

Camille P

Not only good underwater but also on land etc... One that can take good quality pictures... Also shockproof etc... And something easy to carry around and not like the cannon d10 which is bulky... Thank U...

Answer
The best waterproof camera for 2011 is the Panasonic TS3. The picture and video are hands down the best that I have seen in rugged, shockproof cameras.

The second one is the Sony TX10.

They put in a full CMOS sensor (the 'film' of a digital camera) that is the size of a DSLR (big camera)'s sensor, so it performs amazingly in low light.

waterproof digital camera?

Q. I am looking for a digital camera for my boyfriends birthday. He is outdoors a lot and as i live in Scotland he has requested a waterproof camera. Since i dont know a lot about cameras at all i was wondering if anyone could help me out or guide me in the direction to look. I have around £120 pounds to spend.

Even the smallest idea could help...

thanks!!

For a beginner's camera, the PowerShot A590IS offers amazing image quality and superb stabilization.

My digital camera expertise begins and ends with this fact: I cannot resist the urge to photograph a couple of fuzzballs named Chuckie and Violet. I'm a classic novice point-and-shooter, and the crème de la crème of my snapshots find their way onto Flickr or Facebook.

Recently, I spent some time with the 8-megapixel Canon PowerShot A590IS digital camera to see how fully it would meet my list of very basic snapshooting requirements and how well it would compensate fro my lack of technical proficiency. For a bargain-bin price of $150, it has a lot of features: 8-megapixel resolution, 4X optical zoom, optical image stabilization, face detection (which recognizes faces in the frame and optimizes the autofocus accordingly) and a smaller-but-serviceable 2.5-inch LCD screen. And conveniently it runs on two AA batteries.

To orient myself to the camera and gain insight into its features and functions, I ripped the A590IS out of the box and started taking pictures. I had no trouble working my way through various settings, quickly finding and using many of the 19 shooting modes, including portrait, landscape, and auto. Not surprisingly, the A590IS doesn't support a full range of manual settings (what do you expect for $150?), but it does let you program the shutter speed and aperture settings manually if you want to.

The big news with this point-and-shoot camera is image quality. Despite its rock-bottom price, the A590IS scored significantly higher in our image-quality assessments than point-and-shoots that cost more than twice as much and have higher megapixel counts. In particular, our judges noted superior colors and flash exposures in our subjective tests.

Image quality gets an assist from my favorite A590IS feature: the optical image stabilizer. I tried desperately to take a blurry picture--and I failed. No matter how hard I shook that camera or how much my subjects shimmied, I couldn't induce a blurry image. (Unfortunately for me, the A590IS does permit photo subject guillotinage if the picture taker frames the shot badly enough.)

Like many other Canon cameras, the PowerShot A590IS has a classic, easy-to-hold ergonomic shape with a fat thumb/hand grip on the right side. Though it's comfortable to hold, the camera body lacks rubber or textured trim on the plastic surface of its hand grip, which makes the grip a bit slick. I also wished that the camera were smaller: It's a compact camera, but not exactly pocketable. You'll need to secure it in a small camera bag before stowing it in your purse or backpack, or you'll risk scratching it up.

Though the AA batteries are great for convenience, the A590IS produced only 248 shots running on a fresh pair. Many point-and-shoots can take more than 300 shots on a single charge.

Photos from the PowerShot A590IS will never be mistaken for digital SLR output, but this camera is a great choice for anyone seeking an inexpensive, easy-to-use point-and-shoot that produces high-quality images. And don't be afraid to put its optical image stabilization to the test.
