I like the spl model, but not the price.. what do you guys think??...and what type of lens is recommended?

Answer
I just happened to read an article that mentioned housings for the 7D today. Typical of such housings, the one housing mentioned (the Sea & Sea MDX-7D) costs twice as much as the camera body itself. Street price is roughly $3800 for the MDX-7D. Sea & Sea is a well known manufacturer of underwater camera gear but, a quick check of B&H Photo of NYC, New York (http://www.bhphoto.com) yields a couple other options but, they aren't especially cheap either. Those results are as follows:

Ikelite, 6871.07 eTTL Housing f/ Canon EOS 7D

Aqua Tech, CO-7 Sports Housing f/ Canon EOS 7D

Aquatica, Underwater Housing w/ Dual Fiber Optic Cable Ports f/ Canon 7D

Best camera for filming underwater?

Clear Blue

I shot a music video completely underwater about 8 months ago that turned out amazing! (you can view it here: http://www.lx-goods.com/videos/blorr_seven_sisters/). We shot it entirely on one canon 7D camera with an underwater housing unit that was costly to rent. I want to do some inexpensive photography underwater for a new project and wondered if anyone has a decent and inexpensive option for shooting underwater?

Answer
I have heard good things about the Canon D10 http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/605229-REG/Canon_3508B001_PowerShot_D10_Digital_Camera.html

If I had the money though (~$6,000-$8,000), I would go with a DSLR underwater case/lens port/lighting system like you rented. That's one of the reasons I haven't taken up scuba diving....I would want to take my camera with me and I can't afford the shell.

I have very little photography/videography experience and was hoping to keep the price tag under $500.

Answer
Try out a GoPro HD Hero. It's waterproof, mostly indestructible, and can withstand a lot.

Not great with audio, but great for outdoor adventures. I use an HD Hero 2, newest edition is HD Hero3.

eyeliner smears...?

Q. hi, so i'm asian and i wear eyeliner every day. except, it smears alot.

so i need recommendations on what type of eyeliner to use...thats not over 10 dollars. i need a good, inexpensive brand, but one that will stay.

i have already tried mabelline [sp?] unstoppable, perfect point plus, revlon colorstay, and almay 16 hour.

revlon and almay are the best i've used, but they both still smear after an hour or two.

i dont want a liquid liner...so please dont recommend those.

i think it might have something to do with my eye shape, so i have pictures of my eye [with eyeliner on] if that might help any.

http://i3.tinypic.com/8f1ltts.jpg

http://i9.tinypic.com/7ynvjo.jpg sort of had the camera up, so you can see the bottom my eye more. since thats where it smears alot.

thank you!

Answer
I personally am not sure what kind of eyeliner to suggest, because the ones you have listed have all worked for me or people I know. However, I found some online suggestions for Asian women:
-Bobbi Brown's Gel Eyeliner: Truly waterproof and easy to apply with a brush
-Laura Mercier's EyeLiner Cake in Ebony with the amazing Flat eyeliner brush. Pencils will almost always smudge and run all around the eye. Eyeshadows can sometimes be used wet with a brush and that is also a nice alternative.

But I do have some tips for small eyes and asian eyes.

Apply eye liner tightly against the lash line. This should be a nice smooth and clean application. Do not do the liner soo thick that it is all you see when someone is looking at you. You can lightly wing the end tip of your line upward, if you want. But always line corner to corner. And as a general rule, don't eyeline only the bottom part of lashes. It only brings more focus to the discoloration under the eye.

Can you confirm New Zealand's Milford Track options?

High Perfo

I'm considering walking the Milford Track. So far I can only find 2 options for doing this:

Either:

1 - I carry everything I need, including bedding & food, and stay in in a bare-bones lodge without a shower option. This is the cheapest option, but requires carrying quite a bit of weight (problem for me right now with a foot injury (yes, I can do the hike, but should keep the weight pressure to a minimum).

or

2 - Pay for a guided tour, where the hiker (I) don't carry more than what I want, and have food & bedding provided (among other things). This costs more (the cheapest I've seen is $2,000/person, at $400/day), but easier on the body.

I'm stuck in the middle. Not the guided tour type at all, but probably shouldn't carry so much weight on my feet (such as bedding & lots of food). Got any solutions, insight & ideas?

Thank you.
Thank you all so much for the insights. How could I pick a best answer?...I don't know...

I can manage carrying around 15 pounds (approx. 35 kilos) for 4 days straight, but not more. Have Plantar Fasciitis in both feet, comes & goes, but sure to be an issue if I stress them for days in a row. I'm considering trying to find a series of day hikes around Fiordland to be able to break up the stress on the feet by alternating days.
Would anyone have any ideas on good 1-day hikes, particularly in the Fiordland area, but anywhere in NZ is helpful as I'll generally be driving around much of both islands?

I'm also hoping for a 1-day hike near Fiordland that allows me to gain elevation similar to the great experience of McKinnon Pass...but in a day...up then down...due to me feets :)

Thank you.

Answer
Hello!
When are you planning to go? If you go in summer you can easily pack light but if you go in winter is a different story...
Anyway, I've done the Routeburn track in January last year (summer) and I carried a small pack keeping my things to a minimum. I had one lightweight sleeping bag, one change of clothes and waterproof clothes(just in case!), camera and videocamera, utensils for eating, dried food, snacks and I kept it to less then 5 kg...The track was 3 days but I had food for an extra day I spent in Milford area.
I don't know how much weight you can carry without hurting your foot so if 5 kg is too much you should consider a guided tour: you don't have to walk with them, you can follow your pace and enjoy the nature (the Milford track during high season is one way only so you won't meet anybody!)
By the way if you want to do the Milford track you have to book well in advance!
Whatever you decide to do enjoy New Zealand, I loved and it is my favorite country!

I don't know any day walk in the Fiordland but I've done a really nice one in Arthur's Pass, the Bealey Spur track, it's a day walk around 4 or 6 hours, with amazing view of the mountains, it's not on the Lonely Planet so there's no crowd!
But anyway wherever you go in NZ you can buy the small brochures of parks with all the day walk, it's very well organized, plus the guys working there will help you choosing one, they are experienced and very concerned about people safety so they will help you properly!
Obviously another great one is the Tongariro Alpine Crossing in the North Island (Mount Doom if you are a LOTR fan) you won't meet elves and other little creatures but you'll spend an amazing day through volcanos, craters, blue lakes and lush forests! It's 19.4 k but easily done in 6 hours.
Please when you are in NZ visit the Catlins, most of the people don't go there but it is an amazing area where you'll have the chance to see amazing wildlife!
One last thing, if you go to Waitomo to see the caves (North Island) spend the night there and ask the locals where to see glowworms in the night, there is a place in a forest where there a milions of them and they look like stars and it's really a great feeling when you are there (also not in Lonely Planet!!!)
I really really love it!!!
Ciao

What is a good waterproof digital camera for SCUBA diving?

waterproof digital cameras canon on Olympus Waterproof Digital Camera 850SW
waterproof digital cameras canon image

Sunnyboy

I'm looking for a compact digital camera which I can use both in and out of the water. Most of the good waterproof cameras which I have found are only rated to 10 meters, which is insufficient. Am I better off buying a regular camera and a waterproof case? I have seen some of these offered by Canon.

Answer
You're best off to do a little research on the camera you really want and then see if there's a decent underwater housing for it. Personally, I'd steer clear of the actual camera manufacturer's housings. They tend not to allow use of all the camera functions and they are usually only just good enough that they can claim a depth rating of 130ft max. You're better off protecting that camera investment by purchasing a decent housing like an IkeLite ( if it's available for your camera). They're rated to 200 feet and each is factory tested to pass that. I own a Canon A720IS, that canon does make the housing for, but it was so cheaply made that I opted for the IkeLite housing instead. That housing cost TWICE as much as the actual camera. But I know the camera is safe and that model does everything I want in a camera, both above and below.
As for amphibs ( cameras that are in their own housing such as Sea&Sea, or Bonica) I'd advise against unless you don't mind lugging a large housing around on the surface or what your photos will actually look like. Amphibs are a compromise solution. They don't take great above water shots and they don't take great underwater shots. They do both only "ok" as opposed to a higher end camera that you put in a higher end housing.
When you're looking for a camera, keep a few things in mind.
What's it's power consumption like? Changing batteries is impossible on a dive.
What's it's storage format and capacity? You can't swap out cards on a dive.
How easy is it to point and shoot? You're looking through a housing with a mask on your face, can you see what you're aiming at?
You may be wearing gloves when diving. Can you manipulate those function buttons on the housing easily?
What are the options for adding things like strobes, lens or video lights later? What about the actual camera modes? You may find yourself doing macro or wide angle pics. Maybe at night? Maybe in low vis....that onboard flash can then be your worst enemy since you may not have an option to disable it and all you'll get is backscatter.
My advice... choose ten cameras that do what it is that you intend on doing. Find out if a dedicated manufacturer of dive camera housings makes a housing for those cameras. Then choose from between the ones that do.

I am going to get a waterproof camera, which one is best?

I'm looking for a waterproof digital camera with a viewfinder - to make seeing the shot easier for older eyes and in bright sunlight. It doesn't need to take photos actually underwater, just be safe if it gets a dooking.

This question has been asked before and the answer at that time was that there weren't any, but I wondered if anything has become available meantime.

Answer
I did a quick scan and it appears there are no point and shoot waterproofs with viewfinder.

I like the fuji disposable waterproofs (about $7.00) but they are 35mm film.

The other alternative is to find the camera you like, with a viewfinder, and use a waterproof enclosure. There are bag style enclosures that work well for smaller cameras and are inexpensive. Some are model specific and some are universal.

I know that GoPros are good underwater, but I want something in a bit better quality, that is larger in size, rather then the tiny camera. Thanks!

Answer
GoPros are good cameras and are widely used to film underwater, as your requirement is large size camera so you may try Ikelite Underwater Camera Housing for Olympus Stylus Tough 8000, (Mju Tough 8000) Digital Cameras. it is large size camera according to your requirements. For professional reviews you can visit the following link

http://www.amazon.com/review/R1OGQ84YYAYWYF/ref=cm_cr_pr_perm?ie=UTF8&ASIN=B0028N17C2&linkCode=&nodeID=&tag=tawerh-20

It has very good features like 1 x Ikelite Ultra Compact Housing , 1 x Flash Diffuser, 1 x Flash Deflector, 1 x Wrist Lanyard, 1 x O-Ring, 1 x Silicone O-Ring Lubricant, 1 x Instruction Manual Compatible Cameras: Olympus 8000. The housing is made out of Clear Polycarbonate which provides unobstructed view of the camera's information and control functions with visual confirmation of o-ring seal. Depth Rated 60m (200ft).
The housing "O" ring seal is a masterpiece in fail-safe simplicity compared to designs that require stuffing the "O" ring into a groove. The housing size and weight provides almost neutral buoyancy and superb handling underwater. Camera installation is quick and simple. The dependable controls are conveniently placed at fingertip, and kept water tight with the Ikelite pioneered Quad-Ring seal glands, one of the most reliable methods for sealing controls.

What is better: Underwater camera or an underwater camera case?

Nick from

My Situation: I'm going to a family reunion in Hawaii in a couple of weeks, and was thinking taking pictures while snorkeling may be fun. I could buy one of those $10 disposable underwater film cameras, but since I go into caves a lot which are wet, I thought getting something not disposable could be useful there also. I don't want to spend too much money, but am exploring my options.

What I've tried so far: I went to REI the other day, and bought a $30 heavy duty underwater plastic baggie with a hard lens opening that goes over the camera lens part. I tried it out with the digital camera I already have and noticed the pictures are okay if I don't use the flash, but once I use the flash the pictures come out very cloudy. That was the AquaPac brand, and I'm not sure if the DiCaPac brand name underwater baggie would be any better or not. As an alternative, I'm not sure if those "hard case" underwater housings take care of this "flash problem", although with how much they cost for my particular snapshot camera model, it may be cheaper just to buy a real underwater camera. I'd also be worried that a hard case housing wouldn't be useful if I decide to upgrade cameras later on, since they're specific to the camera model?

So, moving the story forward, at Costco there's an underwater camera usually $300, but I just bought it on sale for $150, trying to figure out if I should open it or return it. It's a Nikon Coolpix AW100. It's waterproof to 33 ft, drop proof to 5 ft, and has "underwater mode" (although the camera I already have has an "aquarium mode", not sure if that would help or not).

My Question: I'm not sure if it would be best to go with the Nikon AW100, or get a better underwater heavy duty baggie case with the hard lens to go with my existing digital camera (so that I can always upgrade my digital camera later on), or some other option?

IT'S NOT NEEDED TO READ BELOW UNLESS MORE DETAILS ARE NEEDED:

The underwater camera I found at Costco is http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-COOLPIX-Waterproof-Digital-Camouflage/dp/B008JI0R8U/ref=sr_1_4?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1365876725&sr=1-4&keywords=Nikon+AW100

If I do get some underwater housing, the digital camera I have now is a Canon Powershot A720 IS that I got in 2007 http://www.amazon.com/Canon-PowerShot-A720IS-Digital-Stabilized/dp/B000V1VG2E/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1365875483&sr=8-1&keywords=Canon+Powershot+A720+IS

The type of underwater housing which gave me foggy pictures when using the flash was http://www.amazon.com/Aquapac-Small-Camera-Case-Shown/dp/B0012BRAFY/ref=sr_1_24?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1365875732&sr=1-24&keywords=aquapac+underwater+case

The housing which I haven't tried but don't know if it would be better is http://www.amazon.com/Dicapac-WP-ONE-Digital-Camera-Waterproof/dp/B005IAXVMG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1365875559&sr=8-1&keywords=dicapac+waterproof+case

Answer
I am a scuba diver & underwater photographer.

The reason you get 'foggy' pictures when using the flash underwater is that you get 'backscatter' from on axis flash off particles in the water.

The ONLY way round this is to use an off camera strobe - these can be attached to DSLR underwater housings, or you can get versions that attached to hard cases for compact cameras. The hard cases are usually waterproof down to recreational diving depths (ie at lease 40m, usually 60m). This may well be overkill for what you want to do.

There are rigid underwater housings available for your camera;
http://www.digifish.nl/en/equipment/housings.html?model=Canon+PowerShot+A720+IS

You should be able to attach an external strobe but these are not cheap - you are talking a few hundred pounds!!

Using a flexible 'baggie' is ok, but as you have found in low light (& light levels drop off fast underwater) you are going to need some additional lighting. The Dicapac wouldn't be any better in this respect to what you have already tried. The Costco camera would also suffer from this problem too as it has an inbuilt flash.

The other alternative is to get really close to the subject - reduce the thickness of the water column - this will reduce backscatter.

Just realise that if you thought photography was an expensive hobby, underwater photography is much worse!!

Where can I find a good camera housing that goes over 40 ft under water for Olympus stylus tough 8000?

Leeler

I have looked on Amazon.com and ebay and want to see what all my options are, price wise. I want a hard plastic housing?

Answer
Adorama.com and BHPhoto.com carry many underwater housings.
The Tough 8000 compromises on image quality to make a lightweight waterproof camera. However, there is a housing available for it:
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/608178-REG/Ikelite_6230_80_6230_80_Housing_f_Olympus.html
You could get better pictures by getting a better non-waterproof camera and getting a housing for the underwater uses. Some better cameras include the Canon S95 and G12, for which there are available housings.
One hidden cost of the Canon brand housings, is that they have positive buoyancy (great for boaters), and they sell the Waterproof Case Weight, needed for diving, separately. The more expensive Ikelites are designed specifically for diving and provide neutral or slight negative buoyancy straight out of the box.

Reasonably priced underwater digital cameras?

MusicLover

Are there any good ones? Recommendations? Prices?
Reasonably priced for me is no more than $200. I just want a camera that will take good pics underwater and some videos...just for like the beach or something. Nothing fancy or too special.

Answer
It really depends upon what you consider reasonably priced.

For those of us who dive with cameras and are used to using $1,600 underwater housings for our dSLR's, would consider a $400 P&S camera that can dive to 10 m as very reasonable indeed.

You also forgot to tell us what you want, a P&S camera, dSLR with housing or an old 35 mm Nikonos.

Edit:

Here is one that may fit you budget and needs.

I would appreciate any advise on what make or make and model are good for using under water with the aid of a housing. Pictures taken from some makes need to be run through a photo shop on pc to make them acceptable yet some take good pics straight off.

Get yourself a Nikonos (ok, it doesn't use a housing).

The Nikonos is, without a shadow of a doubt, the world's most popular underwater camera. They are used throughout the world by amateur and professional alike. Even now, when digital photography is the norm, the Nikonos remains popular.

I'm going to go parasailing this November, and I was wondering what type of camera I should use.

I'm not going to use a DSLR or a point and shoot.

Should I use a waterproof throw a way camera or a normal throw a way one? Are waterproof cameras good for only underwater shots? How well do normal throw a way pictures come out?

Answer
Good idea to not use a DSLR or standard P&S in a harsh environment; they don't do well. There are several waterproof and shockproof digital cameras available, such as the Nikon AW-100.

Since there is some water danger in parasailing, getting the waterproof single use camera is the better choice.

Waterproof cameras are useable out of the water.

Single use cameras get OK pictures. They do use a 35mm film, but the lens is usually cheap plastic junk. I found some results of single use cameras on Flickr.

And finally there are some single use digital cameras. Just mentioning them, not recommending them.

Is it safe to put your camera in a Ziploc bag?

vannax3

Haha, okay so I can't afford a waterproof camera (I'm only 13) so I was thinking of putting my camera in a Ziploc bag. Is that safe for my camera? If not, is putting my camera in a separate Ziploc bag, then putting it in another is safe? Thank you!
Oops, I meant those Ziploc bags with the zipper ... Lol, sorry !

Answer
Sure. Close the zip closure and it becomes watertight to a fair degree. You can submerge the camera in water to several feet without any problems. Below about 3 feet, the plastic will compress and literally "shrinkwrap" the camera and you may not be able to operate the controls. Then, the deeper you go, the more external pressure and the more likely a seam will fail and flood the camera. Examine the type of plastic for clarity. You will be shooting through the plastic, and if the plastic is milky instead of crystal clear, it will show as a blur that you can't get rid of in every picture you take. Use the largest bag you can. Start with it mostly fully inflated and see if you can manage the bouyancy. Adjust the amount of air in the bag so you can manage the camera controls and the buoyancy. Remember, as you go deeper, the air bubble in the bag will compress at the rate of double the depth means half the volume. If you are careful, one of the thicker freezer type bags should do nicely rather than 2 thinner bags. The clearer the plastic the better. I've used a freezer bag in pouring rain and it protected my Nikon F2 (35MM) quite nicely. It takes a bit of practice, but any sealable plastic bag with a positive closure such as ziplock, will protect the workings. If you have ANY doubts, it is safest to double the bag, just in case...

=D

I would like to get a waterproof camera that takes the picture quickly after pressing the button (Don't know what that feature is called)
Most importantly I'd like it to be under £100
Thank you for your help :)

Answer
Unfortunately you're asking too much for the money. Waterproof and little or no shutter lag just isn't feasible for £100.

You can get an Aquapac for £25 which will enable you to submerge your camera. I've never used one but looking at the website will give you some more info: http://store.aquapac.net/explore-product-range/waterproof-camera-cases/small-camera-case-418.html

That just leaves the camera. In the sub-£100 bracket have a look at the Panasonic Lumix FS18, Fujifilm T200 and Nikon Coolpix S3100.

Just don't expect miracles :)

Also keep in mind that for a bit more money (£115-£125) you can get the Fuji XP30 and Olympus Tough TG-310, both of which can be used underwater without any bag or accessory.

What type of spy camera should I get?

Hi, every now and then my house gets Teepeed ( toilet papered ) or I get egged and I'm sick of cleaning it up. I'm looking for a spy camera that could catch the victim. My yard has a palm tree in the middle and a lamp post on the corner that has a view of my door. I'm looking for one that's under 100$ and one that is wireless and waterproof and small enough so it won't be noticeable also it would be really helpful if it could hook up to my Mac ( computer ). Thanks so much.

Answer
you don't need a spy camera, you need a security camera. If you hook the camera at your front door or windows you can use a webcam, it will be much cheaper. However for outdoor you will need a weather proof wifi security camera

if they come by at night your will need a IR or InfraRed camera for night time functioning so you can see the little bastards in the act. it is more expensive but it works well at night

I am looking for a good waterproof digital camera 9+ mega pixels that is fairly durable and can go at least 10ft down. I want to use it to go snorkeling and other miscellaneous underwater activities. Also I do like to customize my pictures a little bit.

Thank You for your help!

Answer
Both a friend of mine and I have Olympus... Hers is a bit different than mine but mine is the Stylus 1030W and I couldn't be happier with it!!! Its Waterproof up to 33ft. Shockproof, Freeze proof and 10.1MP but i think Olympus came out with one thats a little better and more expensive... I have has mine for over a year and have dropped it mannnnnnyyyy times and its a champ!

I know in that line they have a bunch of different models... Mine is also metal and very durable and i just love it!!! My friends is not metal and pink and she has had hers for like 2 1/2 years and still loves it!!!

I can't remember how much it was i think around 175 but i know if you get it on ebay it will be cheaper with a bunch of extras and can get a warrenty (I did). And you can customize a bit to (back&white, Shopia, Frames, Red eye, Crop, label etc...)

What is the best waterproof digital camera currently on the market?

How's My H

I'm a little skeptical on what I should get. Whenever I plan on buying a digital camera all I look for is reviews reviews reviews.

Any suggestions on what I should get? I was thinking on the Olympus Stylus 1030SW, it seems to have nice quality to the pictures and seems durable, but then again I'm skeptical.

Btw I'm going to be using this camera for underwater picture taking only, I already have an SLR and a normal point and shoot for regular shots.

Thanks :]

Answer
Ah, best P&S underwater camera ... yes the Olympus is one of the better P&S underwater camera.

Scientists use underwater housing that can cost nearly double the cost of the camera inside ... usually a nice $2,000 to $10,000 camera.

My camera was just stolen so I need to buy a new one. I do a lot of outdoor activities like snowboarding so I need a durable camera. It would also be cool to get one that can shoot underwater because me and my dad are getting into scuba divng. I would prefer a camera with movie mode that records sound as well.

Answer
for sure the Olympus Stylus 850 SW
it is an AMAZING little digital camera! it is shock-proof for about 5ft, it is waterproof upto 3m (so u can use it underwater. if you buy the special case, then you can use it up to 40m underwater) and it will work well in really cold conditions (about 14F or -10C)
it takes good movies and pictures with pretty good quailty and it has TONNES of easy-to-use features and setting so you can make the lighting and colours in any situation awesome
I actually own one of these in the blue colour...i love it!

Which is better the Canon Powershot D20 (and with housing) or the HD HERO 960?

Mary

I know these are both different but are two I've been looking at. I'm a scuba diver and are looking for a good underwater camera on a budget. Most waterproof cameras can only go 10 feet or so. I'll need one that goes further. I figured a waterproof with housing would be the best choice. Good picture quality is a must!
Any suggestions please??

Answer
Neither - I would suggest a good quality point & shoot (like a Fuji or Canon) and add a housing to it - will be good down to depths or around 40m.

Plenty of choices;
http://www.camerasunderwater.co.uk/compact

Whatever you get, be sure to test it out in the pool first - press all the buttons & work the controls. If you are using a separate housing, be sure to seat & grease the O ring properly (the most common cause of housing failure).

What is the best (yet still relatively affordable) underwater camera for snorkeling?

Alysia

I am going on a trip to the Galapagos Islands over the summer and we will be doing a lot of snorkeling, so I'm trying to find a good camera, but I don't know much about this stuff. I'd like to keep my budget around $200 or so, but I have some wiggle room.
What do you guys think is the best underwater camera?
I've looked into the Panasonic Lumix TS4, but it is around $280.00 and even though it's waterproof, I'm hearing that I'll still need an underwater housing, which is just as much as the camera itself. Is the underwater housing necessary? Is there a good camera out there that doesn't require housing?
And finally, are GoPro cameras any good for stills? I won't be taking much video, so photography is going to be my main thing.
Any and all help is very much appreciated. I'm sorry for being so daft about this stuff, but it certainly helps to get advice from people with experience! Thank you!

Answer
The biggest challenge will be finding one with a sufficient depth rating - especially given your budget. Historically, waterproof cameras have either a 3M (9ft) or 10M (33ft) depth rating. However, some of the newer waterproof cameras have pushed that depth rating a bit. For example, the new Nikon AW110 has a 18M (59ft) depth rating.

Realize though that these depth ratings are in "static" (or still) water. If you find yourself in a raging river, surf, or underwater current, or even sloshing the camera around in the water, you will have to reduce the depth rating accordingly. The simple reason is that moving water exerts more pressure than static water.

But any of the 10M or greater depth cameras should work for snorkeling. I would not use a 3M rated camera for snorkeling, due to the depth reduction when you are not in static water. Also realize though that most manufacturers specify the depth rating for one hour immersion. If you are underwater longer than that, who knows?

And of course, a housing is going to be superior to any underwater camera. Some select compact cameras do have optional underwater housings; Nikon J series, some Canon series, etc. As well, some third party housings exist, such as those by FantaSea, Ikelite, and even Polaroid.

GoPro cameras are designed primarily for sports/close action video, and they are best for that use. They are not as good for photos. However, since by definition, underwater photos will typically be closeup (you have limited range underwater), the GoPro will work better for underwater photos than above water. And you really need to buy an underwater housing for the GoPro if you are going to use one.

Finally, make sure the camera has an "underwater" (scene) mode. When underwater, photos take on a color shift to the blue spectrum, and you will either need to correct the color balance (which is what the underwater mode does) or use an underwater red filter. Some housings can accept such a filter (FantaSea for instance) if your camera does not have such a color correction mode.

What kind of camera can i get for underwater photography?

Jamie

for marine photography what kind of camera do i get?

Answer
Two questions are important here - what's your budget & how deep do you want to go?

If its just messing about in rockpools or snorkelling, then a waterproof digital like the Fuji would do;
http://www.simplysnorkel.com/products/Fuji/FinePixZ33WPCamera.aspx

this is "waterproof up to 3 meters, for maximum of 2 hours".

or you can get a flexible housing for a compact or DSLR;
http://www.camerasunderwater.co.uk/ewa_marine/d_stills/index.html

good for up to 10m

If your going to scuba dive, you need a rigid housing. Either for a compact (some packages here;
http://www.camerasunderwater.co.uk/d_stills/packages.html)

or you need a DSLR housing (the most expensive option).

Once you get below a few metres, you'll need flash. On camera flash will be useless unless the water is very clear AND you are close. You'd need to get an off camera flash (available for both compacts and DSLR's) which fits on an arm.
