What is a good waterproof video camera under $400-$450?

Rebecca

I want a good HD waterproof video camera under 400 bucks, but don't have much experience with buying them, so I don't know what's good. I saw the sanyo cameras, and some looked pretty good. Any suggestions?
The main thing I was thinking about is I want to take it out on a boat, without worrying that water would get in it or if I (I hope not . . .) fall out of the boat or something :P

Answer
It depends on what you mean by "waterproof"? what are you going to be using it for and at what depths?

To me any camera that is 'waterproof' to less than 10m is pretty much non waterproof. The reason is that the depths given are static depths, just placed in the water, if you knock them then you can easily exceed the tolerances given and flood the camera.

Most dive camera/housings are rated to between 20m and 100m, some even deeper. You can get a housing for most main manufacturer made cameras.

Quick Full working way to make a waterproof camera holder?

i wanna make a video under water in the pool. any ways to make a good waterproof camera cast with house hold items?

Answer
water and electronics don't mix. the slightest amount of moisture in your camera could destroy it. underwater camera cases is the job for professional gear. If you insist on home made, test it out first with a dummy camera.

you can make a camera splash resistant or rain resistant by putting it in a gallon plasic food storage bag. this does not work for underwater submersion though.

Do you think the K2000 or K200D is better?

Which one is newer? Is the K200D waterproof?

Answer
Here are the two camera specs side by side. Note the K2000 is the KM here in the UK.

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/compare_post.asp?method=sidebyside&cameras=pentax_k200d%2Cpentax_km&show=all

Personally I would go for the K200D as the KM doesn't have the top screen which handy for reviewing your settings when using a tripod, with the KM you have to peer into the viewfinder which can be tricky sometimes, a backwards step IMHO. The KM is the newer model.

The K200D is not waterproof, but none of the Pentax DSLR (or any other for that matter) are, some are weatherproof, theres a world of difference between weatherproof and waterproof. There are not many weatherproof lenses in the Pentax range yet so its pretty academic, though they are addressing that.

Pentax has had a policy of mimicking film cameras when converting to Jpeg in camera which has received some criticism. The idea is that their system holds onto more data in the conversion (little sharpening for example), you can alter this in camera. With the KM they have reverted to a more conventional conversion with a more usable image strait out of the camera. Note this doesn't effect the RAW files which will be identical.

What's a good, new brand, and water proof video camera under $200?

Joseph

I've got $200 and I'm trying to find a good camera for tornado chasing. So, I have a few questions:

#1. What's the BEST brand?
#2. What's the video camera called?
#3. How well does it do when wet (I really need a waterproof or water resistant)
#4. How much does it cost? (Has to be under $200)
#5. Where can I get it?
#6. Does it need an SD or SDHC card?

Answer
Kodak PlaySport is the camera you are looking for, it's priced $140 on Amazon (see the link below) and can record in Full HD 1080p! And of course, waterproof for your needs. It needs SDHC memory card. Buy it together as amazon suggests with additional battery and 16 GB card and you are still under $200. And reviews of the users are awesome...

I am stormchaser as well, but here in Europe, I have purchased this camera yesterday from amazon UK, can't wait to arrive :)

Hi, I need to get a new camera and need to keep it as cheap as possible. I know some of you may say "yuck", but I had a Kodak Easyshare (can't remember which #). It only cost like $97 and I really liked it in general. It really took nice pics, but eventually, the door where the batteries go busted right in half and fell off. Kinda cheap junk!

Anyhow, I need to know what to look for and maybe some personal experience with specific cameras. I need it to be as cheap as possible (FOR SURE under $200, preferably less!) I just need something to take nice snapshots, as I don't print out a lot of them and if I do, I rarely make them extra big, so the quality of larger prints is not a major issue.

Also, I don't have a lot of time until I need it, so online resources may be interesting, but I would prefer if anyone could tell me where to GO get one, so I don't have to wait for it to come in the mail.

Thanks!

Answer
Shop in a Best Buy, Circuit City, Staples or an actual local camera store, if you don't want to order a camera and wait. This is a good idea anyhow, so you can see if the thing fits right in your ownhands.

Here's my standard "Best Cheap Camera" answer...

Some of our best answerers always recommends the Fujifilm FinePix F20 camera as the best-for-less choice. I have to say that I like the sample images at Steve's site (below). If Morey000 or SpaceCowboy show up after me and make this recommendation, choose them as the best answer, because I'm just passing along their suggestion. I have no personal experience with this camera.

http://www.steves-digicams.com/2007_reviews/fuji_f20.html
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/specs/Fujifilm/fuji_finepixf20.asp

My brother has the A540 and my mother-in-law has the A530 - on my recommendation - and neither one has stopped speaking to me yet. Based on this and experience with other Canon Powershot cameras, I am now recommending the A550 as a nice and relatively inexpensive camera. The A550 has more pixels than the A540, but offers less user control.

The A540 has been discontinued, but I've seen it for $140 in some stores like WalMart and Target.

The A550 costs $160 at B&H and, of course, you'll need a memory card.

Steve's reviews updates the "Best Camera" list periodically:
http://www.steves-digicams.com/best_cameras.html

Consumer Reports from May 2007 has a short article on digital cameras and they recommend 10 different point and shoot cameras in the following order within groups according to camera design:

**COMPACTS**
Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX2 (Overall score 75) [$410]
Kodak EasyShare C875 (Overall score 73) [$165] - Rated better for shutter lag
Nikon Coolpix P4 (Overall score 65)

**SUBCOMPACTS**
Canon Powershot SD500 (Overall score 72)
Casio Exilim EX-Z850 (Overall score 72)
Sony Cybershot DSC-W50 (Overall score 70) [$180] [Similar to W55] - Rated better for shutter lag
Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX3 (Overall score 69) [$200] [Similar to FX-10, FX-12]
Olympus Stylus 720SW (Overall score 61) [Similar to 770SW - $360] (Waterproof)

**ADVANCED COMPACTS ("Near SLR")**
Fujifilm Finepix S6000fd (Overall score 77) [$300] - Rated better for shutter lag
Fujifilm Finepix E900 (Overall score 73) [$250]

[Things change so quickly in digital cameras that I can not find all of these models listed for sale and it's not even May yet. Prices are from B&H Photo, April 2007.]

Hey , im new to photography... I need some advice on choosing the right camera for me. I'll start off by saying my budget is $300. I'll be using it mostly for taking pictures of me and my gf, mostly leisure probably be using video on it too. I'd prefer something that can go underwater hopefully. Anyways that is basically all i need a camera for, what do you guys suggest? I have a future shop near me and i think they have some variety of cameras to choose from. So what suits my needs for $300 or less?

Answer
I would suggestion these good underwater cameras and inexpensive :

Canon PowerShot D10 : 12.1MP, 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom, 2.5-inch LCD, Waterproof to 33 feet, Face Detection Technology plus Face Detection Self-timer

How can I fix photos that didnât develop properly?

mwkristy

I recently went on a family trip to an indoor water park. I did not want to get my digital camera ruined so I brought one of those disposable waterproof cameras. We took priceless shots of my three kids having a blast. Unfortunately when we had the film developed from Walgreenâs none of the pictures took. There was no flash on the camera so I am assuming that is why. You can barely make out the images in some of the photos. They are either extremely grainy or so dark you canât see anything. I want these photoâs sooooooo bad. Is there any software that I can buy that can fix them? I brought the Walgreenâs photo disk so I have all the images on my computer.

Answer
there is unfortunately not a lot you can do once the film is developed... there simply isn't enough light there to make an image from..

you can try using photo shop to lighten the image but that is not likely to work well.. in the future... if you know you took film pictures with no flash use a custom developer not wall mart and ask them to push the film.

Answer
Most 'proper' camera housings are camera specific and won't work on just any camera, and, as has already been said, are also very expensive. Usually only the top end cameras are provided for, nobody's going to spend $2000.00 plus on a housing for a $300.00 camera.

There are cheaper alternatives, with depth restrictions, available for some point and shoot cameras. Here's a link to a few suggestions, again they are camera specific, these are for Nikon, but Canon and Pentax are available too..

http://www.twenga.co.uk/dir-Photo,Photo-Video-accessories,Underwater-housing-190

Most digital camera manufacturers offer a 'waterproof' camera in their range usable to a shallow depth of a couple meters or so and offer a much cheaper alternative to a housing. Here's one, but Pentax,Canon and Fuji all do higher spec ones

http://www.coolest-gadgets.com/20080112/underwater-camera-reaches-75-feet-without-housing/

Finally there are some sites that offer DIY alternatives, very much a user beware for most of them,

http://www.diyphotography.net/diy_the_cheap_yet_shamefull_underwater_housing

I don't think I'd risk my camera inside a condom!!!.

Do underwater camcorders work well above water?

Miette Xam

I want to buy a camcorder for around $300 or less and I found a waterproof one for $190, it would be great to be able to film things underwater but I want to film things normally as well.

Answer
Visit this site, make any consumer level Camcorder waterproof. I have built 3 of these and it is not hard to do so.

http://www.indymogul.com/backyardfx/episode/BFX_20101220/affordable-underwater-camera-rig-diy

Consumer level HD camcorders have 3 problems. 1) Blurry, fuzzy, out of focus areas closely around people in videos taken by consumer level HD camcorders. 2) Any movement, even a wave or lifting an arm, while in front of a recording consumer level HD camcorder, results in screen ghosts and artifacts being left on the video track, following the movement. Makes for bad video, sports videos are unwatchable. 3) Mandatory maximum record times - 1 hour, 30 minutes, 8 minutes, 3 minutes - all times advertised as maximum record time for some consumer level HD camcorders. No event i have aver been to is that short. Either take multiple camcorders or pack up with out getting the end of the event on video.

With a MiniDV tape camcorder, record 60 or 90 minutes ( camcorder settings), 90 second or less to change a tape and record for 60 or 90 more and repeat till you run out of tapes.

You can get a Canon ZR960 for $250. It is a MiniDV tape camcorder, has a Mic jack. You need a firewire (IEEE1394) card ($25 to 30) for the computer and a firewire cable (less than 10) to be able to transfer video to your computer.

I want a new camera. it needs to have a sports setting, be digital, and either be waterproof or i can buy a waterproof case that would fit it. it can't be too expensive. I would like it to be able to fit it into my pocket for nights out with friends. thanks!

Answer
Kodak PlaySport (Zx3) HD Waterproof Pocket Video Camera would be perfect for you.

I am a Canon diehard fan. But Canon will not have anything that compares to Kodak Playsport HD waterproof pocket video camera. At 1080P the video clip recording is acceptable. But, at 720p and 60 frames per second this camera rocks, the outcomes are great. I've applied it close to and in water, the blue filter helps beneath water. I am preparing to utilize this for our Disney World this holiday from the water parks.

This camera takes 5MP HD Stills, so now I've a camera that may get video and stills on demand moist or dry. I have other camera's inside the same class like Flip and Samsung each tend not to evaluate, even at 720p 60 frames per 2nd. $150.00 pricetag can also be really affordable.

Simple to carry, very person friendly to move files through the digital camera towards the personal computer or right to Youtube. Nightvision could be good but most of my recordings will likely be in Daylight. Bottom line fantastic digital camera and I've no cons to talk about.

What is the best quality video camera i could get for £150 or under?

(:

Why would they have hardly no baby pictures of their kids?

waterproof camera kids digital image

scorpus23

um let's say i know this person, they arent really young but there were cameras around them when they were young. Like it wasnt really uncommon to not have a camera then. They got these kids, and out of all the kids only like 1 has pictures of them as a baby and its only like one shot, that's it. Or they may only have one of each. the one kid they hardly dont have ANY pictures of, WHY??? it was like the kid didnt have a childhood/babyhood, there's no pics barely.

What's your take???

Answer
Have you asked them?

My mom only has a picture or two of me as a baby. Film was simply expensive. Once I got into elementary school (early 80's) then the disposable film canister came out and that brought the cost of film down. But before then, every camera they had gave really thick pictures with etching feel on them almost, and that was late 70's and even into the early 80's. Once the pre-loaded film canister came out and polaroid, then there were SOME more pictures, but the 80's marked the time of a great recession and everyone was out of money. Not that I cared, but really the only pictures they got of me at that time were taken from school, my dance class, etc. Group things where the parent in charge would go out and buy a disposable reel and then take a picture of each child, or the school pictures.

In about 1983-85 about I got my first camera. It had a real easy drop in disposable reel that was super cheap, and my parents were ecstatic that we could get more pictures taken then. My camera was cheap, but worked well, and I learned to take pictures knowing that I had to pay for my own film to develop, my parents weren't about to pay for it. That means that even though we had more cameras, we took one picture of an event. You timed it. You focused. And you might have a year or two of pictures on a film, or you might put that film aside for later to be developed. If you put it aside, it rarely got developed, and the film was lost. The pictures were rarely focused right (there was no auto-focus) and you usually threw away half your film unless you were real good. This basically meant that pictures of a baby or kid had to be posed, and you didn't do it often. Pain in the NECK to get them to hold still. We have a lot of pictures of my nieces and nephews at this time sitting on mom's lap eating something yummy... and blurs. :P

It wasn't until 1989+ about that I remember cameras became real cheap. There were the auto-loads, and they had a simple auto-focus, used batteries, and people were having more money since we were making more about then. Also there were photoclubs and stuff where you could get pictures developed for pretty cheap, and you often didn't have to pay for ruined pictures anymore. :) Plus there were different finishes so that some were more waterproof than others. The result was that I remember the 90's as everyone having a camera and snapping pictures. You still timed it because you didn't want wasted film, but there was a lot more photographs of kids and babies.

Other things happened to our photographs. We had a big move and lost a lot. My mom didn't put some in a photo album and they were ruined by bugs climbing in the box. One of my sisters went nutso and ruined a whole bunch of pictures. Things others could have happen included floods (photos were rarely salvageable), fires, tornadoes, earthquakes, and just some kid finding pictures while they had scissors.

Basically... growing up in the 80's you didn't usually have more than 3 pictures done a year, if that. In the 90's, I'd say that went up to about 10. These days, my kids get 10 pictures done in a week, if not more, digital cameras revolutionized that. I remember my sister used this to support a conspiracy of hers, but the fact was that people just didn't waste film, it was hard to load and expensive to develop until the mid 80's.

So that's my take. Unless they're from the 90's onward, then you wouldn't believe how many advances cameras, film, and where you developed it went through.

How can I get my fisher price digital camera to work?

drakkar

I have changed out the batteries

Answer
Fisher Price have gone a little more hitech recently with their Fisher Price DVD player, and now a Fisher Price kid-tough digital camera. With the camera being kid-tough it is built rugged and ready to go almost anywhere.

The fisher price kid tough digital camera has sturdy grips to allow your child to firmly hold the camera. A built in flash can be found and the whole thing is waterproof too. It is aimed at children aimed 3 years upwards and lets them document their favourite things. The camera has 2 view finders that allow the children to look through with both eyes.
Fisher Price Kid Tough Digital Camera Requirements

* Ages: 3 and up
* Requires: Four AAA batteries
* Easy to Start Taking Pictures

An adult will need to use a screwdriver to install the four AAA batteries before kids get their hands on this camera. With a textured button on the front that releases the shutter and large buttons on the back that let little hands turn the camera on and off, browse through pictures and delete images, using this camera is so easy it doesnât need to come with instructions.

64MB of memory can be found inside that allows the camera to store up to 500 images. There are 2 resolution settings that see the camera work at 0.3 megapixels and 1.3 interpolated mega pixels. Although the pictures are not going to be the best of quality, it still will be enough to capture their favourite things. Images can then be printed by transferring them to your PC, or viewed on a 1.5â³ LCD screen.

It wont nessasarly break. Its because the water pressure on the camera can cause it to start leaking inside, if it does happen then it breaks. They say 10 ft but thats just for legal reasons so if it breaks they wont get sued. So usually it might be 20-40 ft or more.

I'm looking for a camcorder but don't know what I really need to be asking for when I go to get one. Does anyone have any recommendations? This is roughly what I am looking for but I don't know if it's unrealistic or if there are other important features I need to be looking out for....?

In theory ....

- I want it to be HD, decent sound and picture quality.
- I don't want a shoulder mounted thing, but it can be bigger than a credit card!
- I would like it to film well in poorly lit/ darker places as well as bright, sunny places.
- Is it important to have a flash on a camcorder!? I don't want it for stills.
- I would also, if possible, like it to be waterproof.
- I would like reasonable image stabilisation as I wouldn't be using a tripod or anything like that and a zoom that doesn't go really grainy.
- I'd like to be able to add extra memory as well.
- I don't want to re-mortgage to get it either!!!

Any recommendations regarding a specific camcorder would be greatly appreciated, or any help with what I need to be looking/ asking for?

Answer
These are the brands I would trust and recommend: Canon, JVC, Panasonic, Samsung, Sanyo and Sony. There are many low end junky cameras on the market. If the specs look too good to be true, there's probably something wrong. For example, there is no such thing as an HD camcorder for less than $200 worth buying. In fact, even under $250 is going to be marginal at best.
The accessories you buy are just as important. Tripod, lighting, microphone, etc are something you don't want to overlook. You will be hard pressed to find a camcorder for less than $500 with the ability to take an external microphone. At some point, even if you are only a little serious, you will regret not having a microphone jack. Take this advice, I have a nice Samsung HMX-H200 camcorder that is now discontinued. I paid $250 for it. A month ago It was down to $220. When it first came to market in 2010, it was around $300. What you look at today will be cheaper tomorrow. In a short period, it will be replaced. The replacement will cost more. It may or may not do more or do it better.
By the way, I REALLY regret not having an external microphone for this camera, other than that, I'm OK with it.
Whatever brand/model you are interested in, chances are good somebody on YouTube has uploaded sample, review or test video from it.

Do you take your digital camera every where?

TheTermina

I have a Kodak Easy Shot and I take it every where! It is amazing how many times in a day I find a reason to take a photo of something interesting! I am doing about 400-600 photos a month. Some amazing sunrises and sunsets, buildings, people, etc, etc. I download the images to cd's once a month. One day when I retire I will be able to look back to all those memories!!

Answer
I do it too... no matter if my point-and-shoot is not too compact.

I have a bag with my PowerShot A640, a WP-DC8 waterproof case, a lens adapter, UV and circular polarizer 58mm filters, 8 AA rechargerable batteries and a recharger, two 1Gb SD memory cards, a small waterproof bag.

It isn't a small bag, but I take it every where!
I toke more than 300 pictures in a day when traveling!

It makes me able to take pictures like these:

I definatly want a small point and shoot one, I dont want it to stand out above the water. I would like it to be no more than $250. I have been looking at the Olympus 1030 SW , the Pentax W60, and the Fujifilm Z33wp, out of those which would give me the least problems? Also, if you know of other good quality small waterproof cameras please let me know! THANKS IN ADVANCE!

Answer
Personally I would suggest Olympus 1050 SW.

or if you can afford I would recommend Canon PowerShot D10 12.1 MP with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5-inch LCD.It take good picture quality.

what should i get for a waterproof camera?

Yello Guy

i very much want to get a waterproof camera, but i don't know which one. i feel like i need more info on the cameras to make a good decision. i've been searching amazon and it comes between a couple.
im very interested in the new olympus 8010, but the cost is much greater than the canon d10.

i dont believe image quality will be an issue just reliability. plz anyone who has owned these cameras help me make a good choice that floats.

Answer
Although it's virtually crush-proof, the Tough 8010 is a new camera and is untested.

The Canon is last year's model but has been proven reliable. Another one you should consider is the Panasonic TS1. The casing is made of metal -- just like the Olympus Tough.

Check the link below for all the list of waterproof cameras in the market right now. Maybe you'll find one that fits your budget.

If you have a recommendation please leave a link to the camera below. I also wanted to ask what camera brand is better than the others I know Kodak is terrible then there's Sony, canon, Nikon which are the most familiar to me. I know there are the goods and the bads of each brand but in general which is the best for digital cameras. Thank you for your time best answer gets 10 points !!!!! ð

I want to get a camera as I'm currently borrowing my Dads when I need it. I'm doing Geology in college and later on, in Uni so need a camera which doesnt mind being dropped into puddles or rock pools and can withstand being dropped a bit. I've come across a few cameras, but I'm having trouble getting reliable reviews of them which definitively tell me the quality of the prints created. I guess that photo quality isnt the top priority (I'd rather have it waterproof and of slightly less photo quality) but I want it to be as good as it can be in the budget.

Ok so I am looking for a simple digital camera, that has a reasonable mega pixel number and is under 100 dollars. I'm looking for this camera because I am going to be using it daily at school, and i would like to have something small, yet useful. I don't mid if the quality of the pictures are not on a professional level, but I would at least like the camera's resolution to be pretty good. Also, if possible, I would like o have this camera in green, since i will be using it often and i would like my camera to stand out. So what my overall question is What camera has good quality , resolution, and is at a reasonable price ?Thanks so much everyone! (p.s. a link to the camera would be nice =))

Answer
http://www.olympusamerica.com/cpg_section/product.asp?product=1468#/productViews Use the "Find a Retailer" tab to find out the going price, etc.

The Olympus FE-46 camera fits your price and comes in colors-but not green .You can however buy a green carrying case for $13.00

Fujifilm FinePix XP10 12 MP Waterproof Digital Camera with 5x Optical Zoom and 2.7-Inch LCD (Green) by Fuji
Buy new: $199.95 $149.95 This listing was taken from amazon.com...
The above digital camera comes in green, and yes it is $50 more than you wanted but it may have other features that make it worth the extra $50. to you.

Good luck

Answer
For that budget, your option for a waterproof camera is quite limited. But here are a few suggestions :-

1. Fuji XP10 (around $110)
2. Kodak Playsport (a waterproof videocam that could actually take photos)

The Fuji is also shockproof but the video quality is not as good as the Kodak. See my link for the list of waterproof cameras that you might want to check.

my family rented a beach house and i need some more ideas on what to bring. I already have the basics and some others but what should i bring? Also give some ideas on what we should bring for my Paw-paw/ Grandpa he has skin cancer.

Answer
clothes wise: atleast two swim suits. a swim suit cover. . lots of tank tops and shorts. probly more than 3 pair of shoes/flip flops. definitely some you can wear in the ocean water. few pairs of sunglasses and maybe a hat. oh and definitely a beach bag and a few beach towels. protection wise: for your grandpa I'd bring some very good sunscreen, but im sorry I have no reccomendations. maybe get him a big hat to shade his head/face from the sun if he doesn't mind wearing it. um if you want to tan I suggest the banana boat tanning oil. it works great and you don't burn. its completely safe. Fun: an underwater camera. if there's children maybe some beach toys. hope this helped a little. HAVE FUN(:

What is the cheapest underwater photography solution available?

Guy Haimov

I want to take underwater photos in shallow reefs

Answer
Two questions - how deep are you going to go & what's your budget?

Shallow/cheap options - you can either buy a waterproof digital camera (usually ok for swimming pool depths - 2-3m or so) or you can use a flexible housing for a camera you already have (usually ok for 5-8m or so).

Fuji finepix is quite good at around £100;
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Fujifilm-FinePix-XP10-Digital-Camera/dp/B00342UTO8/ref=sr_1_7?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1300631604&sr=1-7

or the Canon Powershot D10 for just over £200;
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Canon-PowerShot-Digital-Camera-Optical/dp/B001T9NH7E/ref=sr_1_12?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1300631604&sr=1-12

A selection of flexible housings;
http://www.camerasunderwater.co.uk/ewa_marine/d_stills/index.html

If you are going deeper than about 10m you need a rigid housing, otherwise water pressure pushes buttons you don't want pushing. A selection of compact camera & housing packages here;
http://www.camerasunderwater.co.uk/d_stills/packages.html

These will be a few hundred pounds for both camera & housing.

At the top end of the scale is housings for DSLR's - these are several thousand pounds worth once you've bought strobes/ports as well.
