Answer
Nikon COOLPIX L26 16.1 MP Digital Camera with 5x Zoom NIKKOR Glass Lens and 3-inch LCD is a point and shoot camera, there are a lot of options to learn, so I am taking the time to do just that! I actually read the instructions (downnloaded the PDF manual)and fleshing it out...the 3" screen was the main draw to this camera, as was the price-under $120.00, and the simple controls that sit just right of the screen....also the fact I can use regular AA batteries and/or rechargeable...comes in 3 choices of finish-red, black or silver. Good documentation available...Nice camera for the price!

Waterproof Digitals?

Nate S

I want a waterproof digital camera with video capabilities and a minimum of 3 photos per second. Also as many megapixels as possible.
I'm hoping it will be under 500$
Any suggestions?

Answer
Waterproof digital with a lot of megapixels at 3 frames per second speed for under $500? You're dreaming.

To get 3 fps speed or better, expect to spend at least $500 on the camera alone, because it'll need to be an SLR like a Nikon D40 or Canon Rebel XT. You can't get that speed from a point and shoot.

Your only hope: get a used digital SLR like a Nikon D70s or Canon 10D or 20D SLR. And then look for a underwater SLR bag for it...and pray that it doesn't spring a leak. Or lower your expectations of what you can get for $500--like a 1 frame per second point and shoot with an underwater housing. Expect to spend about $150 for a point and shoot and about $150 for the housing--totalling $300.

Sorry to be so negative, but you need to be realistic.

What is the best underwater or waterproof digital camera that takes good video for editing?

0909

I like to edit videos with video clips from boating and jet skiing so it has to have clear video and i would like to try shooting video underwater a little. I like small compact digital cameras that are the square hold not the camcorder flip out style. I don't want to spend more than $300. What's the best camera for me?

Answer
Canon PowerShot D10 12.1 MP Waterproof Digital

Underwater shots??????????????????

DJCJ_16

i need some underwater shots for a video i'm doing and is there anything to protect my camera underwater?

Answer
How much protection do you want, how much can you afford and how deep are you going?

You can get away with using a couple of heavy duty zip-lock bags for multiple layers. You can go about 2 feet deep. Video quality will not be so good because the camcorder has to see through the plastic.

Or... you can go to TAP Plastics and make a box with a rubber seal and hinged top - but getting to the controls will be impossible.

If you do either the first or second one, and your camcorder gets soaked and unusable, tough luck.

Or... you can get a waterproof bag from Ewa-Marine designed for this purpose...

Or... you can get a hard-case underwater camera housing - generally these are expensive, and they are rated to go quite deep - you will need lights, too. Ikelite makes good ones.

Since you did not tell us which camcorder, there's not much more we can help you with. Sony has some kits for their consumer cams...

underwater photography/video Canon S95 or GoPro HD HERO2?

Hanoo

What would be the best camera in terms of photo quality UNDERWATER? Is the sensor size of S95 larger than that of the GoPro hero 2? I understand that the GoPro is much better at stabilizing the video but wouldn't the S95 have more advantage over the GoPro in terms of adjusting manual exposure etc?

I don't want to buy a housing for my DSLR as a housing for my camera a Canon 550D is really expensive. but price is not an issue for the S95 + housing or GoPro hero 2...i jux want to know which is better out of the two. thanx
Ps i knw the S95 is not water proof thats y im buying the Canon WP-DC38 housing along with it. jux wanna knw which is better...ill go for the most votes
I live in the Maldives. So basically i'll be shooting close ups of surfers, the reef (fish n coral) ill be snorkeling

Answer
I am pretty sure the canon s95 is not water proof. And anyway the GoPro HD HERO2 is by far the best choice. It is currently ranked at number 1 in the top 100 underwater cameras on amazon. Some of its functions which impress me are:

1. Simple Language-Based User Interface
2. Sharper Professional Glass Lens
3. Faster Image Processor
4. 11MP Sensor
5. Full Wide 170º, Medium 127º, Narrow 90º FOV (Field of View) in 1080p and 720p
6. Professional Low Light Performance
7. 11MP, 8MP and 5MP Photos with Full 170º and Medium 127º FOV
8. 10 Photos Per Second Burst
9. 1 Photo Every 0.5 Seconds Time-Lapse Mode
10. Natural and High Wind Audio Modes
11. 3.5mm Stereo External Microphone Input
12. Wi-Fi BacPac + Wi-Fi Remote Compatible
13. Long range remote control of multiple cameras
14. Wi-Fi Video Preview + Playback on Smartphone / Tablet / Computer
15. Live streaming to the web

Im sure you wont be let down by its waterproof features.

What is the best camera I can get for 300$?

Tristanne

What is most important to me is focus. You know the pictures, of let's say, a flower, and the flower is very sharp, but the background is very blurry? I'd like to MANUALLY choose what part of my photo is in focus instead of letting the camera do it automatically :). Megapixel-wise, I'm thinking around 8? But that's not necessairy.

I live in Canada so I do mean 300$, Canadian! I'd also like to get it from Best Buy or Costco, if possible. Thank you in advanced!

Answer
Here is a pretty good camera, not the best but its my favorite because its also waterproof. You can see it here: http://www.pentaximaging.com/products/product_details/digital_camera--Optio_W30/reqID--9587364/subsection--optio

teen interested in finding a super badass camera for photography purposes?

Q. right now i have a dumb little cannon powershot or whatever, it works okay and i have taken nice pictures but its a tad bit boring, i'm thinking possibly some sort of EOS Digital SLR Cameras by cannon would be really cool or a D3000 from nikon.

my standards are:
-a nice lcd screen
-macro abilities
-must be able to change coloring (b&w, sepia, RGB)
-underwater/waterproof would be nice but i doubt there is a nice camera out there with this
-portable
-can easily download to computer

i really like to travel and i will have a lot of opportunities to this summer, so i want to be able to document all the trips to the best of my ability.

so if anyone knows of this type of magical camera, or really likes the way theirs works, and meets some of my criteria, i'd love to know more,

thanks in advance.

Answer
Ok there is a nice camera out there like the one you want. It is a Canon. I would suggest sticking with a CANON camera since you had one before. Its not easy to move from one company to another. The best CANON DSLR camera is the CANON DIGITAL REBEL Xs. If you have any more questions on this camera look at www.canon.com. I know that Wal-Mart sells it and so does Best Buy and BJ'S Wholesale Club. Be sure to check Costcos and Sam's Club. Also be sure to look for package deals because sometimes you can get a extra lens free. And lenses can be very expensive when buying them separately. Be sure to find deals too. Best Buy has the best package deals. Be sure to look at their online pricing and store pricing and ask a representative to see if they are going to have package deals sometime soon. :) Hope that helped you. Again if you need extra advice please feel free to ask me!

OLYMPUS waterproof, shockproof cameras: Good buy or not?

mariajay

To those who owns this kind of camera, please share your reviews...Thanks

Answer
I know Olympus has 2 models for shockproof and waterproof.

1) Stylus 1030. It has very tough body and good picture. Shockproof up 6.6 feet and waterproof up to 33 feet and also freeze proof.

2)Stylus 1050. This one replace the Stylus 1030 and this cost a little bit more. 1050 doesn't have tough looking body but still do the same job. Shockproof only to 5 feet and waterproof up to 10 feet.

Amazon has it for really cheap
Here is the link to the Stylus 1030s

Q. I'm looking for a camera which is priced around £100-£150, I need a camera which is pocket sized. Should look professional. I would like it to be pocket sized and maybe waterproof? I know what I'm asking for expensive. I don't want it to be heavy in weight. I don't want a camera which requires batteries. It should also have a good mega pixel.
It doesn't matter if the following above in not involved, it's just the price which I'm worried about.
It would be great if you gave me some links and what to purchase and not to purchase.

What camera would be good?

Thanks for reading

Answer
"Which one is a good camera to buy?" is a VERY common question here on YA.
A quick search would have given you hundreds of instant replies (without having to wait for answers), but once again here is my 10 cents on the subject:

I don't like to give recommendations for particular cameras because there are too many choices and too many variables in what people are looking for. I find it much more useful to help you think this over, then make up your own mind.

First of all, wanting a "professional looking" yet toy sized camera doesn't make any sense. Would you ask to race in a Formula 1 event on a toddler's tricycle? Oh and yes..... ALL digital cameras require batteries.

Point & Shoot cameras are wonderfully handy because of their small size.
When light conditions are ideal, they even take really nice photos - all of them do.

However, they all DO have limitations - they don't do very well in low light situations (i.e. noisy photos, hard to avoid blur, etc). The little onboard flash is very harsh at close range, and doesn't reach very far.
Many of them have no manual functions, so you are limited to only very basic photos, you can't compensate for unusual situations, or do many fun "tricks" and special effects.
P&S's also suffer from frustrating shutterlag and many of them chew through batteries rather quickly.

If you're ok with all those limitations, then go ahead and pick one, most of them (the same type and same price range) are rather similar. Personally I would pick either a Canon or a Nikon, and would certainly stay away from Kodak and Vivitar.

A higher end P&S will give you more manual options and better quality. Many of those even give you the option of adding a proper flash (which makes a big difference to your flash photos).

Don't worry too much about megapixels - all modern cameras have plenty enough, plus there is a limit to how many pixels you can squash into a tiny P&S sensor before you actually LOSE quality rather than gain it. 6 megapixels is about the upper limit for those little sensors.
Don't worry about digital zoom, in fact, don't EVER use it. It simply crops away pixels, i.e. destroys information. The only real zoom is optical.

Some people ask for a camera that "doesn't take blurry photos". Blur is the photographer's problem, NOT the camera's. Even the most expensive camera will take blurry photos if the person behind it doesn't know what they're doing.

Some words about special effect features such as color accent, or even just b/w or sepia:
About applying any sort of effect in camera: DON'T DO IT !
Imagine if you just happen to take the best photo you ever took - surely you would want to have it in all its glory, right?
Always set your camera to biggest size, best quality (and to color).
That way, you start with the best possible photo as your original.
Then you make a copy and edit it to your heart's content.
You have much better control over any editing on your computer, even something as simple as b&w will look MUCH better when it was processed properly instead of in camera.
You can do all sorts of things to it PLUS you get to keep your original.

Decide which features are important to you, and look for cameras that have that feature.
Then go compare a few models on www.dpreview.com .

The very best thing you can do for your success is to borrow some books and learn about photography. A bit of knowledge will make a much bigger difference to your photos than your choice of P&S camera can.

For what it's worth - if I was in the market for a P&S camera right now, my choice would be a Canon Powershot SX40 HS http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/cameras/digital_cameras/powershot_sx40_hs#Specifications

A good sports waterproof camera?

Q. I need a good waterproof, shockproof, and high res cam.
I'm going to record Airsoft wars with it, so I might need to be able to strap it on to my head or gun.
I'm going to go diving with it, maybe even up to 30 ft deep, 20ft should be enough but I'd prefer 30.
I would like it to be 720p hd, and be able to record up to or somewhere around 60 fps.
And it needs to be able to support a 4gb sd or micro sd card, maybe higher.

Now I could use 2 cameras, like one for airsoft and one for diving... maybe... but I prefer all in one kinda thing.
Also, it might need to have night vision, for night airsoft wars and such... must be atleast 40ft night vision though, although night vision is not a must...
And slightly affordable...

Thanks! 10 points for the best answer!

Answer
a reasonable camera would be the Olympus Stylus 800 "Tough". It is waterproof and shock resistant. no night shot camera is going to work at 40 feet unless you have an IR illuminator the size of the ones that were on the army's M60A tanks. The Stylus is primarily a still camera, but it does have a "movie" mode for video.

can i go scuba diving with a waterproof didgetal camera?

can i go scuba diving with it to take pictures of fish? is it really that waterproof?

Answer
the camera manual will tell you how deep you can go with the camera. ask your instructor if you will be going past this distace on your dive. if he says yes, then don't bring it.

Underwater Camera Questions?

Q. I am going on a week-long trip to a tropical area and am planning on doing hikes, scuba diving, exploring, etc. I want to get a camera to bring along on the trip, especially one that has underwater capabilities for the scuba diving. I've heard good things about gopro and contour, but really know nothing about cameras. My budget is about $200 (willing to go a bit higher if necessary). Help!! I don't know what to look for, what are the benefits of different types, etc. Thanks for helping

Answer
The primary difference in underwater cameras, especially the low-cost compact cameras you are probably looking at is their depth rating.

If you are going scuba-deep, you need an underwater housing. Waterproof cameras are just not good enough to keep from leaking at scuba depths... especially considering their ratings are done in static water - and not in ocean currents.

When you are in dynamic water; ocean currents, raging surf, river, etc. this applies additional pressure on the camera, just as if you went deeper. A camera rated for 20 Meters might only survive in 10 Meters of water under those conditions.

There are no consumer-grade underwater cameras within your budget that has sufficient depth rating for scuba. Typically these cameras are rated for 10Meters or less in static water. Some are only rated for 3Meters. However there are a few that are rated for a bit more (the Nikon AW120 for instance is rated for 18Meters).

For your budget, the only possible solution is a POV camera such as a Sony Action Cam or one of the cheaper GoPro cameras. They include underwater housings as part of the base package. The housings are rated for significantly deeper conditions (the Sony Action Cam for instance is rated for 60Meters). POV cameras work well enough for video but are not too good for photos.

Otherwise, a 3rd party underwater housing for a regular camera would exceed your budget, and that doesn't include the cost of the camera.

Of course, if you are only going to scuba down to 10ft or so, you can get the Nikon AW100 refurbished for under $170. It is rated for 10Meters, and after reducing the depth to compensate for moving water, 10ft would be probably the max. depth you should go.

Here is a link to the refurbished Nikon AW100:

http://www.cameta.com/Nikon-Coolpix-AW100-Shock-Waterproof-GPS-Digital-Camera-Orange-Factory-Refurbished-65588.cfm

You are probably not going to get a 10Meter rated camera for less as most cameras in this price range are rated for 3Meters.

Spring '07 Digital Camera Preview

Technology, like fashion, has its seasons. The spring line of digital cameras is being paraded down the trade show aisles, and they're looking pretty terrific. Casual photographers are going to see a new generation of point-and-shoot cameras that are easier to use than ever before. They've all got more than enough megapixels, big LCD viewing areas, and numerousâbut more sensibleâfeatures for controlling elements of your photos, like manual settings, higher ISO speeds (which let you shoot in low light, but can cause noisier photos), as well as image stabilization. Some of the differentiating next generation features include wireless connectivity, GPS photo stamping, and photo sharing. Plus, the prices are so good that I'm thinking that digital cameras are the single purchase in consumer electronics where there's no buyer's remorse.

At the recent PMA trade show, 110 new digital cameras were showcased. Here's a lineup according to their megapixel rating. I've picked the six most interesting that I expect will cause some of the season's biggest buzz.

Touch Screen Implementation on the Samsung NV11: Samsung's commitment to a sophisticated consumer who likes point and shoot but also likes top of the line features, the NV11 is a 10-megapixel camera with a 5x optical zoom lens. Its 2.7-inch preview screen uses a touch-screen technology that lets you roll your finger over the controls to select them. Niceties include an ISO of 1,600 and Samsung's face recognition software that can detect and focus on faces automatically. It will be available in May for $400. DP Review has a good overview and photos. Samsung will have a GPS accessory out in the second half of the year. It'll stamp every photograph with place and time.

Beating the Elements With the Olympus Stylus 770 SW: Apparently, this camera has been making the rounds of trade shows stuck inside a block of ice to showcase its rugged waterproof, shockproof, and frost-proof features. It's a 7-megapixel, demure little point-and-shoot camera with a 3x optical zoom. It's quite small, but there's still room for the full 2.5-inch viewfinder. It costs $380.

GE's New Kid on the Block: Gizmodo captures the arrival into an already crowded camera market of this new entry from GE. The GE cameras start at 7-megapixels with a 2.5-inch LCD, and work up to a 12MP camera with a 3-inch LCD. All the models have image stabilization. GE has brand recognition and distribution, but there's no word on price yet. The first cameras should be ready in April.

An Enthusiast's Dream With Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-W100: Sony's 8-megapixel beauty is housed in a compact body. It gives the user a high degree of control with a manual exposure mode that has extended control for up to 46 steps of adjustable shutter speeds (30 to 1/1000 sec.) and two steps of aperture control. Sony also has a new wireless camera, the DSC-G1, which allows you to transfer pictures using Wi-Fi spots. It has built-in music and great video too, making it one of the most talked about cameras of the season.

Kodak EasyShare's Attention to Low Light: Two from Kodak score high marks for a better than average zoom, high ISO, and image stabilization, making them ideal cameras for shooting in low light with no hassle. The Z712 has 7.1-megapixels and an ultra-12x optical zoom that reaches from 36mm to 432mm on a 35mm equivalent, as well as a short shutter lag of only 0.26 seconds. The Z885, with 8MP, has a 5x optical zoom lens with a 36mm to 180mm reach and a special high ISO of up to 8,000. Both cameras will be available this April.

The Surefire Bet of the Canon A570IS: Canon continues to improve its line with a camera that's image stabilized and has top of the line shooting controls. For just $279, the 7.1-megapixel camera offers a big LCD screen, uses AA batteries, and has an ISO of 1,600. You can add accessory lenses and manual control. Face recognition is a part of Canon's well-regarded Digic III processor. All said, it's a lot of camera for the price.

What $300 Gets You This Spring

7- to 8-megapixels;
A large preview screen (at least 2.5-inches);
4x to 6x optical zoom;
ISO speeds of at least 800, preferably 1,600;
Automatic and manual settings; and
Image stabilization.
Bells and Whistles:

Print and share photos directly from camera;
Use of Wi-Fi;
GPS positioning options (made both by third party and camera manufacturers); and
Face detection.

What camera is of good brand, is selling around $140 and records in HD1080?

I-scream L

I thought about buying a waterproof camera then I thought of the waterproof casing. I don't go into the water much anyway.

I've contemplated on buying the Kodak Playsport ZX5 but I've heard bad things about it.
& the Canon 310hs is great(except for the fact that everyone says you can hear when you zoom or retreat the lens while filming)- but it's not waterproof & it's a little above what I'm looking for.
Then there's the Canon Powershot S100 & Canon DX40 which are AMAZING but I can only afford it when I'm like 27. Which I am not now.

I REALLY like Canon camera's. However, alot of them are above my budget range. & most of them are bad under low light except the expensive ones.

Can anyone please help me out and suggest me a good camera with the specifications I'm looking for? :)

Thank you so much.
