While other digital cameras may use touch screens to access settings, the new Stylus 1050 SW has a shockproof, waterproof and freezeproof body that is sensitive to touch all over. So getting to the most common menu settings in situations where pushing buttons takes time or is difficult is now as fast and easy as a tap on the top, back or sides of the camera.

The rugged 10.1-megapixel Stylus 1050 SW is designed to take the hard knocks that everyday life--particularly those with kids--can throw its way, so you know that the memories it captures will be protected. It can handle five-foot drops to the hard ground, operate in freezing snowstorms, and swim with the fishes -- lethal conditions for most other digital cameras. Additionally, the sleek, lens-protecting faceplate slides down, turning the camera on and revealing the lens in an instant to capture the moment.

What waterproof camera should I buy?

I'm wanting to get a waterproof camera for my vacation, one that takes good quality pics but is also inexpensive. I don't want to spend over $150. Does anyone know of some good ones? All suggestions are appreciated! Thanks :)

Answer
It's really hard to find a water camera that's at that range but if you want a no-frills camera that will be just for traveling and can be safely used in water (not too deep though) then you should check out the Panasonic Lumix TS20 waterproof digital camera. It has a lot of reviews with a pretty good rating, and it fits your budget. I'd recommend you go to a store to check out if you like the quality and see for yourself how it works. Then do a little price check online vs retail (you might end up saving a lot of money that you can use for your vacation).

Have a great vacation!

PS: You can always rent a camera locally depending where you go (for example, Hawaii rents it out daily and weekly for a great rate).

I am looking to buy a waterproof camera with a panoramic feature, does any one know of any good ones.?

jc

Answer
Perhaps the coolest feature is that the tx10 is capable of capturing 3d pictures even with its single lens, which is made possible by an algorithm that takes 2 angles for each shot. And if that doesnât convince you, itâs also capable of taking still images while recording a video, as well as panoramic pictures with Sonyâs Sweep Panorama technology.

having a waterproof camera (underwater), can you still take regular photographs with this camera outside.?

Good waterproof/underwater digital camera, $200 or under?

Melody:)

I've been looking for a waterproof/underwater digital camera online. I've found them as low as the low 100's with horrible reviews. The only one I've found with good reviews is the Olympus - Stylus Tough 14.0-Megapixel and it's $300, which I cant afford. (I'm 15, it's an early birthday present from my mom so I can have it in time to go on vacation)

Could someone please recommend me one with good picture quality above and under water, that's no more than $200?

-thanks:)

Ever use a vinyl waterproof case for a digital camera?

Nicky

I wanted to purchase a waterproof hard plastic case for my camera, but this PVC vinyl bag seems to be the only option. Anyone ever use one of these PVC vinyl cases; If so are they reliable? Thanks for any info!

http://primescuba.com/p-1291-canon-powershot-sx100-waterproof-case.aspx

Answer
Are you looking for a carrying case or an underwater housing to take underwater and shoot with. The bag you show is not a true underwater housing.

If you want a waterproof hard case to transport the camera you really should look pelican cases. They are waterproof and nearly indestructable

If you want a housing then stay away from the bag types. You may want to look here

Waterproof digital camera?!?

Genevieve

I really want a waterproof digital camera for my birthday this year. I have been looking online and have found almost every camera has at least a few bad reviews to go along with however many positive ones they may have. I have a budget of 500 at this point, willing to spend more if necessary though. So I was wondering if anyone has any personal experience with waterproof cameras? Or have a friend that has? I'm just really looking for some advise here. Thank you for reading and your possible help :)

Answer
The thing about the internet is you will always find bad reviews on anything. What I like to do is to take the "Olympics" scoring approach to reviews. Throw out both the highest and lowest reviews, and what is left over is probably more accurate.

I have the Olympus Tough 8010, and it has worked well for me. Not all waterproof cameras are created equal, and perhaps the most significant difference is the waterproof depth rating. The waterproof cameras are usually rated for 1 Meter, 5 Meters, or 10 Meters in depth. Any deeper and you will need to go with a housing type camera.

One thing you have to do with waterproof cameras is to rinse them off after use.

Another thing to look for in a waterproof camera is underwater color balance. When underwater, even only a few feet, you will get a blue hue to the photos. A red filter or underwater color balance feature is required to bring the photo back to the correct color. The Olympus has this function as well, but I suspect others do too.

The Canon D10 is another camera that has good reviews.

Some, but not all of the waterproof cameras are also Tough, and are shockproof, freezeproof, and chrushproof (of course within limits).

I bought my Olympus after seeing a review of it thrown into a washing machine at the laundromat and it took a video of it being tossed around. So far, it has worked well.

If you are interested in strapping a camera to your helmet while you engage in some sport, this may be the best choice.

However, if you just want a tough, weather proof camera to take into adverse conditions, there are lots of choices, like these.

Contour HD 1080p VS GoPro HD Helmet Hero VS ATC9K HD Action Camera?

Predictabl

It will be primarily used as a helmet camera for when I go skiing.

Simply, which one is the best?

Answer
I would suggest the GoPro HD. Even though the contour is a bit more sleek, the GoPRO has awesome video quality and is much more versatile when you are looking to use it for things besides just skiing. The waterproof box is bombproof and the wide variety of different mounting options make the gopro awesome if you want to catch unique angles. The mounts are also very sturdy for the gopro.

It is not the prettiest camera out there, but its function is awesome and that is very important.

Best waterproof/shockproof/etc. digital camera?

Judge Judy

I'm looking for a good digital camera to take on vacations and trips when I will be in environments that include rain, sand, snow, etc.; and to take to the beach and stuff like that. I already own a Canon SX 230 HS that I use as my regular everyday camera, which I love, but I don't want to risk bringing it to the beach or anything because of sand and water dangers plus I want to take pictures in/under water.

I've been doing a lot of research lately and so far, I like the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS3 and the Olympus Tough 8000 (I know there's a newer version of the Olympus out but it can't go half as deep as the 8000, which would be bad for scuba diving trips).

I just wanted to get opinions from some people who have experience with these waterproof etc. cameras and see which ones you all might recommend I check out. Price isn't really a factor either, but I'd prefer one under $300. Thanks! :)

Answer
The new Nikon AW100 is Waterproof/shockproof/dustproof, etc.even has GPS, so you can geotag all your shots.

Both Canon and Pentax also make such cameras.

Best Waterproof Digital Camera?

gawsh

I want a digital camera that takes high quality, clear pictures and is water proof. I had the Olypmus Tough 6020 and the image quality wasn't great at all and it was 14MP!!

What about the Sony Cybershot TX5?

Answer
from all the reviews i read there are only 3 you should consider for picture quality.
canon d10 - 12mp, 3x zoom. 640x320 video, @$249
panasonic lumix ts2 - 14mp, 6x zoom, 720p high def video, @$269
panasonic lumix ts3 - 12mp, 6x zoom, 1080p high def video, gps, @$349 (estimate, available in march)
the canon picture is slightly better but the lumix video is better.
i have the lumix ts2, it takes great pictures and the video is sweet. i also dropped it on an icy road and accidentally kicked it into the snow bank my first time out with it. no harm done.
the sony has a lower picture quality than those three and if i'm not mistaken it has a sliding cover on the front that tends to trap sand and dirt when closed causing grinding.

any one visited the shangri la villingili resort at the maldives?

Emmy

I'm leaving with husband on 13th october for a 3 day trip to the shangri la villingili resort at the maldives..any one has been there and can share experience...wheich activities there are the best?which restaurant..and any tips or notes will be really helpful..also what do i need to take and how will the weather be??
it's fairly an expensive resort but the stay and tickets are won in a competition..we're paying for the domestic flight from male to gan though

Answer
Hi Emmy

Congrats on winning the competition - you have won a great prize ! The Shangri La is a superb resort, and I'm sure you'll have a fab time.

3 days is such a short time though - you can try the island hopping and dolphin-spotting trips, but to be honest I would just enjoy the shallow lagoon, the snorkelling and the spa massages. As for the restaurants, this depends on your budget and your tastes - many people prefer salads to steak in the hot weather, but you must try the local bbq reef fish and tuna.

It is the rainy season, so expect some cloud & showers but don't let it spoil your stay - it's still very warm 24hrs every day ! But make the most of your sunny days. The sort flight to Gan is very enjoyable - be sure to have your camera in your hand luggage, so you can photograph the islands & atolls as you fly over.

TIPS
- Plugs are usually the UK style 3-pin, but adaptors can usually be provided by reception or bought in the shop if necessary.
- there's not many insects here unlike some countries (eg: Sri Lanka/India) but if you're the type of person that usually gets bitten then bring some mosquito cream & after-bite.
- it's day light from approx 6am to 6pm, so consider getting up at dawn - it's a lovely time - and maybe taking a siesta after lunch.
- it's warm even at midnight in the rain - 22 degrees - so no need for socks, jumpers etc. If you do feel the cold, a shawl is useful & versatile.
- be sure to try snorkelling - it's great, even in the safe and very shallow waters. But wear a Tshirt in the water.

TO BRING
- shorts, T-shirts, sandals, flipflops, linen/cotton clothes, sarong/wrap/scarf.
- suntan lotion, aftersun, sunglasses, sunhat & cap.
- swimwear - several sets of swimming tops (for the sun) & shorts, (mask, snorkel, fins).
- books, kindle, ipad, ipod, smartphone (with chargers), (underwater) camera.
- basic 1st aid kit - mosquito repellent, bite cream, plasters, paracetamol.
- any meds you need (don't assume you can get them in Maldives).
NO NEED FOR : socks, shoes, long trousers, sleeved shirts (although if you feel the cold generally, 1 longsleeve might be useful to wear at midnight in the rain).

Have a great holiday. :-)

Waterproof Digital Camera...??

zwimmerz

k so I really wanna get a waterproof digital camera, and a good quaility one too... what are the price ranges do you think?? What's a good brand?? Is there any good websites or stores i should check out?? THANKS!

Answer
There are many "Weatherproof" cameras but a truly waterproof camera will be bulky and expensive. A weatherproof camera can get wet but can't go under water. Olympus offers many models.

I take back expensive and bulky. Here is a waterproof (down to 10 feet) camera from Olympus.

OLYMPUS waterproof, shockproof cameras: Good buy or not?

mariajay

To those who owns this kind of camera, please share your reviews...Thanks

Answer
I know Olympus has 2 models for shockproof and waterproof.

1) Stylus 1030. It has very tough body and good picture. Shockproof up 6.6 feet and waterproof up to 33 feet and also freeze proof.

2)Stylus 1050. This one replace the Stylus 1030 and this cost a little bit more. 1050 doesn't have tough looking body but still do the same job. Shockproof only to 5 feet and waterproof up to 10 feet.

Amazon has it for really cheap
Here is the link to the Stylus 1030s

Can any AA Batteries go in the Kodak easy share sport waterproof camera?

Ella

I'm going on holiday tomorrow at 5am, so argos won't be open, in the Kodak easy share sport, the batteries are Kodak AA Alkaline Batteries, but can any AA batteries go in it or does it have to be Kodak, Thanks
Thanks

Answer
Yes

AA is AA..

now what can be is that the camera sucks the batteries dry, but that is a Kodak thing you can't fix that [you can buy a camera that isn't kodak!] Anyhow any alkaline works.

I suggest to buy rechargable Low Discharge NiMh' s though> Eneloops or PowerEx. These are lovely for any power use and retain charge a long time! They will love you long time!

Is there really a waterproof camera/video recorder?

That crazy

My friend told me that he wants to take pictures of me and our other friends scuba diving and i really want to know if it's possible?

Answer
Yes, there are many waterproof cameras. Some are good for scuba diving. They are rated for various depths. Here are five:

Diving with camera??

hellooo

So I'm going to the Great Barrier Reef in a few weeks for scuba diving and snorkeling, and I really want something so that I can take my camera with me snorkeling.

And I can't afford a new camera that happens to work underwater. Mine wasn't cheap, so I would like to take it with me if possible.

I have the Casio Exilim S880, and no underwater housings are made specifically for it. I've found things like this: http://store.thewaterproofstore.com/minicamera.html
but I'm afraid they aren't going to be very effective. Plus, since it's not a Casio product, the warentee wouldn't cover it if something were to happen.

Is there any alternative, or does anybody know of a good case that works with slim digital cameras? Is the link I have a good choice?

Answer
I reckon it's your only choice for that camera. Snorkeling on the surface though and that's it. It's up to you to decide if you'd like to trust that at 15 feet. Not me, thanks. Another thing you need to consider is that you're now shooting through a plastic bag, which isn't going to do your images much of a favour. I would opt for a waterproof disposable. You aren't going to get more than 15 feet or so out of it, but at least if something goes wrong, it's a cheaper loss than your digital.
You'd be surprised at how much cameras like the Sea & Sea have come down in price. You can find them at under 300 bucks now for the digitals. Matter of fact, I remember seeing a cheap digital in the local Walmart that was allegedly waterproof . Here ya go, the Vivitar ViviCam VC-5188 Black 5 MP Digital Camera w/ Underwater case
http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=9604830#Item+Description
Sixty bucks, 5MP and SD compatible up to 2 gig. Rated to 45 feet. It's an even better option than a disposable because for an extra 14 bucks you can get the 3 year protection/ replacement plan and abuse the heck out of that camera not to mention it's rated deeper than any camera of comparable price or cheaper, that I've seen.

My Nikon d70's sensor is scratched?

Rebcca L

I have never cleaned my sensor myself. I've had a "bogey" (blurry spot?) in some of my images for a little while, so last week I left it at a camera shop for a pro cleaning. They call back to say it's clean, but I have a permanent scratch on the sensor. Is this fixable? is it worth it? I have a waterproof point and shoot to get me by, and I can continue to photoshop spots until I have money to either fix or replace my slr.

Answer
Check back with the shop, if they did in fact cause the scratch they are responsible for fixing it, except in some very unusual circumstances. Those would be should you not be able to prove they caused it (by images before and after), or if they have some sort of limit imposed in the service contract that has lapsed. In the future, I'd recommend only using a Nikon Authorized Service Center for this type of work. Many camera shops are GREAT, but haven't necessarially caught up with the digital revolution.

Should they be unwilling to repair it, if they are a Nikon Dealer or Service Center, contact Nikon directly to resolve the issue - they will generally mediate if they are under an agreement with the shop - since they don't want their name dirtied by poor service.

Otherwise, I'd price the repair with Nikon if it turns out you have no recourse with the shop. Since only the glass filter and not the filter itself is likely damaged, it should be "reasonably" cheap. Find out a price, and then make your decision. The D70 is a great camera, but it'd be a judgement call on if you'd rather spend $100-200 for a repair or drop $900 on a new D90, which is probably the closest current model in features and performance.

How can I fix photos that didnât develop properly?

mwkristy

I recently went on a family trip to an indoor water park. I did not want to get my digital camera ruined so I brought one of those disposable waterproof cameras. We took priceless shots of my three kids having a blast. Unfortunately when we had the film developed from Walgreenâs none of the pictures took. There was no flash on the camera so I am assuming that is why. You can barely make out the images in some of the photos. They are either extremely grainy or so dark you canât see anything. I want these photoâs sooooooo bad. Is there any software that I can buy that can fix them? I brought the Walgreenâs photo disk so I have all the images on my computer.

Answer
there is unfortunately not a lot you can do once the film is developed... there simply isn't enough light there to make an image from..

you can try using photo shop to lighten the image but that is not likely to work well.. in the future... if you know you took film pictures with no flash use a custom developer not wall mart and ask them to push the film.

I looked on amazon.com but most of the really nice ones had bad reviews about how they don't really work under water! I need a real person who has had experience with waterproof cameras to please help me! I really love taking pictures and have always had a passion for photography. <3 I love it with all my heart and I don't seem to know anybody who has a waterproof camera. PLEASE HELP ME. I'm 15 and having an awesome summer (NO SCHOOL) is what everybody wants. You know what I mean? My 2012 summer has to be awesome. Please help me!

Answer
one drop of water on your camera electronics means disaster, so don't do the "do-it-yourself" projects. A great camera that is rugged, compact, and waterproof is the Olympus Stylus 550WP. That is a camera that i had before giving to a friend, and was well pleased with its performance.

What camera is best for my situation?

Alicia

My husband and I are missionaries going to the Congo in Africa (jungle) for the next few years. I am looking for a water resistant, shock resistant camera (very humid environment). I need one that will focus on close ups of items without it blurring or making the objects further away in focus. My current camera is a standard digital camera but it does not focus on close objects and it is not water resistant. The camera will also need to be able to use a memory card so I can email pictures of my daughter back home to the states. Bonus points if it records videos as well.

Answer
I don't know why Jim A continues to tell people that there's no such thing as a shock resistant camera. Just search for "shockproof camera" on Amazon. There's dozens of them!

Try the Panasonic DMC-FT4 or DMC-TS4 as it's called in the USA. It's waterproof to 12 meters, shockproof for a 2 meter fall, freezeproof to -10 celcius and dustproof. It's got the macro closeup facility you want and uses standard SDHC memory cards. And it records full HD 1080p video. Even underwater!

Review here with a few other waterproof cameras: http://www.lenstip.com/134.5-article-Waterproof_cameras_test_2012_-_part_I_Panasonic_Lumix_DMC-FT4.html

I would advise buying and testing it well before you leave. The biggest recurring complaint I see with waterproof cameras is that they have quality control problems, meaning you don't always get a good waterproof one. It's not the easiest piece of equipment to make because the rubber waterproof seals are quite difficult to design install in a way that guarantees that water can't get in. Usually if they work then they do continue to work well for several years, but it's easy to end up with a duff one.

The problem with closeup macro work is that when you are very close to an object, your depth of field (the amount in focus) is not very great, so things behind the subject do tend to be out of focus. That's just part of the physics of photography.

You can compensate a bit by setting the camera into aperture-priority mode and setting a small aperture, but that in turn means using slower shutter speeds, so you are more likely to introduce blur through camera shake (unless you use a tripod) or through the object moving.

You can compensate for slow shutter speeds a bit by increasing the ISO setting, but that tends to add more "noise" to the image.

This balance of shutter speed, aperture size and ISO setting is at the core of all photography. To get a lot in focus with macro pictures you need a lot of light, a lens which stops down to very small apertures and which focuses close up and a good tripod. That's only really achievable with a Digital SLR camera with dedicated macro lens - and that isn't cheap.

Often the best macro shots are obtained by deliberately throwing everything completely out of focus except for the main object.

Thinking of buying a digital camera...need some suggestions...?

abbi

I'm thinking if buying a digital camera...anyone have any good suggestions?

Here are the requirements or preferences:

color: red, light green, light blue, black
price: $200--$450
features: take pictures, screen, flash, video, etc...

Answer
In that price range, you've got a lot of good choices, so it depends on your priorities:
The Pentax Optio W30 is an OK camera, but it's waterproof and dustproof and has a cool time lapse mode. If you want to take your camera with you on exotic vacations, this might be a good idea.
The Fujifilm Finepix F30 has really good low light performance because it has a larger (1/1.7") sensor than most compact digital cameras. It also has good battery life.
The Canon Powershot TX1 has a 10X optical zoom, and will shoot motion video at 1280x720 resolution! Most compact digital cameras just shoot motion video at 640x480.
The Olympus SP-550UZ has an 18X optical zoom, will go up to ISO 5000 (at reduced resolution) for extreme low light photography, and has a bulb mode that will take a picture up to eight minutes long! You could start doing astrophotography with one other these!

If you'd like a more specific answer, decide what your priorities are (what types of pictures or vidoes you'll be taking) and we'll narrow it down your you.

I'm going away at the end of the month, and was looking to buy an underwater camera case, I'm just concerned about the safety of my camera as I have a fairly expensive one

Just wanted to know if anyone had bought one of these, and what sort of review they would give it
Thanks

Answer
Those pouches are total junk - just read the reviews for them and you'll see how many have had cameras ruined by them. Just get an actual waterproof camera, such as the Coolpix S30 or AW100.
