First selection ignoring price, Second selection considering also the price.

What is important for me ?
1 - Durability , real waterproof without having to replace seals yearly and so on
2 - Good picture quality
3 - Low shutter lag
4 - Ease of operation
5 - Good video

The candidates:
Pentax Optio WG-2 GPS,
Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX200V,

Answer

Just look at the advantages it has against all these cameras. It wins every single time. I own a Sony camera(HX7v) you'll be extremely happy with how feature packed Sony cameras are, their high quality video, the amazingly fast autofocus, and how easy it is to use. Glad to help.

Best Waterproof Digital Camera?

gawsh

I want a digital camera that takes high quality, clear pictures and is water proof. I had the Olypmus Tough 6020 and the image quality wasn't great at all and it was 14MP!!

What about the Sony Cybershot TX5?

Answer
from all the reviews i read there are only 3 you should consider for picture quality.
canon d10 - 12mp, 3x zoom. 640x320 video, @$249
panasonic lumix ts2 - 14mp, 6x zoom, 720p high def video, @$269
panasonic lumix ts3 - 12mp, 6x zoom, 1080p high def video, gps, @$349 (estimate, available in march)
the canon picture is slightly better but the lumix video is better.
i have the lumix ts2, it takes great pictures and the video is sweet. i also dropped it on an icy road and accidentally kicked it into the snow bank my first time out with it. no harm done.
the sony has a lower picture quality than those three and if i'm not mistaken it has a sliding cover on the front that tends to trap sand and dirt when closed causing grinding.

Any tips on a top notch camera under $500 dollars?

ellong0

Becoming interested in youtube, i've made a channel.
Long story short, a very nice camera would be nice.
Does anyone have any tips?
Requirements:
1) Obviously (Or maybe not) I would prefer in the less then $500 range, I am willing to spend a nice deal of money on a camera that I like, but since i'm not professional, or have any desire to be professional, I would like to spend in the 350-500 range.
2) That being said, I don't expect to see a barbie digital camera up here for $19.99, NOT what i'm looking for.
3) Having any unique details would be awesome. (Ex. able to go underwater)
4) DIGITAL please. And easily portable. If you're going to say one of those canons you better make sure it's really flippin good.
5) Clearly video is necessary.
6) :D

Thanks for reading my obnoxious rules.
Or if you didn't, thanks for totally disregarding what I want. :D

I was a Canon fanatic until I bought a Panasonic Lumix DMC FZ18 (8Mp) on sale a couple of years ago. I love it and can't wait to get the newest model, the FZ35 (12 Mp). The FZ series has lots of extras (but no water resistance): wide angle to 18X, the lens is threaded so I can use filters, the FZ35 does HD video, there's a ton of modes to choose from (I'm finally starting to use the Manual mode and setting the Fstop and shutter speed on my own;-), and it's one of the few p&s cameras that does RAW (which can be processed in the ACR of both Photoshop and Photoshop Elements). Since I'm always lugging the camera around and holding it up for long periods waiting for birds, it's nice that it's light-weight. Here are some of the photos I've taken. I don't spend much time or worry when I photograph but I usually post-process with Levels and, if needed, some unsharp mask.

And here's one of the first images I took with the Manual mode last Saturday night. I hand-held the camera and cropped in close in post-process.

for taking pictures of wild life and underwater? DSLR Camera

Answer
Highly recommended. If you are new to SLR/DSLR and looking for a entry-level DSLR to begin with, then Nikon D5000 will give you Nikon D90 or Canon T1i picture quality for only little extra $ on top of entry entry DSLR Nikon D3000 or Canon XS. I really believe the extra $ is well spent for the picture quality coming out from Nikon D5000 especially in low light condition or indoor. A lot of people against it due to missing build-in moter to AF the non-CPU lens, which is not really a major issue to most of the new entry DSLR users if they do not have old lens on hand. In adiition, there is no reason that the D5000 LCD is not good enough if all Nikon D3000/D40/D60 and Canon XS/XS1 LCDs can provide you good picture viewing results. That's why the lower resuolution LCD display than D90 and T1i display LCD is not bothering me too much. However, the picture quality is much better than Nikon D3000/D40 or Canon XS/XSi and even up against Nikon D90 or Canon T1i picture quality, which is the super value come and shine from D5000.

Please check dpreview.com and see the Canon Rebel T1i review. The professional reviewer even mentioned the Nikon D5000 provide great picture quality even compared to Cannon T1i. You cannot go wrong with D5000 unless you have a lot of older lens from previous SLR/DSLR needed built-in motor body or you are using more D90 features instead of P&S replacement, then D90 might be better way to go.

Otherwise, skip Nikon D3000 or Canon XS/XSi and go for Nikon D5000. It is the best vaule entry DSLR if you are looking for both better picture quality and greater user friendly unit.

i want a new digital camera but dont know which brand or type is the best??

courtney

i want a good thin camera but with a large screen.. mainly just to take quick shots with friends..will spend up to $400.

Answer
I would say research your options shop around and ask questions about interesting products to qualified store personell who know digital photography they can narrow down your wishlist from 100 cameras to just 3 or 4 if they know the following

where do you intend to use the camera - some cameras are
built to last and are heavy duty also sometimes have rubber casing to prevent interior damage if it happens to fall and land on the ground others are water resistant or waterproof

what are you mainly taking pictures of and when - if it is mostly scenery or landscapes and buildings you can get away with a digital camera but if it is fast moving or moves you need a digital camera that allows you to create a movie also consider if you will be using it mainly in the late afternoon early evening you might want to just get a digital camera with flash

some other things to consider is pixel quality also known as megapixels if you get a 1.4 megapixel camera you will have average to decent quality pictures if you have an 8 - 12 megapixel camera you will get better quality pictures but it will be more expensive for the camera because of the capabilities but also when you upload the pictures to your computer the filesize of each picture will be noticeably larger as a result for instance

1.4 megapixel digital camera @ 1 picture = 670 kb versus

6 - 12 megapixel digital camera @ 1 picture = 5.9 - 10 megabytes per picture

the last thing you will want to consider is do you want extra space on your camera to hold additional pictures on top of what can be taken? if so then a digital camera with a SD card slot may be a good choice for you since you can expand the memory by up to 1 - 2 gigs of memory this will allow 9999 pictures instead of the usual 1 to 2 test photos

if this information helps great! and have fun with the world of photography be sure to check out photobucket as a means to store your pictures and share them with friends

What is the best HD, waterproof, audio input accessible, video camera currently available?

Allen

I'm looking for a relatively portable "all-around" camera with high battery life and, preferably, high-capacity flash memory usage. Something I can attach to the hood of a car, then take into a pool, and finally record a simple podcast with... Pricing isn't too much of an issue, but I'm not really looking for a top-end professional cam. Something under the $1,000.00 mark or even the $600.00 mark would be great. But, does such a cam even exist? I've been looking around for a while and just can't seem to find one with all the mentioned featured.

Answer
All the affordable waterproof cameras are P&S cameras so they will definitely cost less than your $1,000 budget

The drawbacks of the two cameras listed above is that they 1) do not have an auto-focus lens, rather a Fixed Focus (2ft/.6m â â) lens and 2) have NO optical zoom. These two factors will lead to rather poor optical performance of those cameras. Of the two, the GoPro would be the best match for now .. until a better lens system is designed for the GoPro camera system or a major steps up and designs such a camera with the features you want.

Here is a rather verbose explanation of that you want, need and the availability of such cameras.

* Battery life will limit you to finding cameras that use Li-ion batteries, but P&S cameras are not known for being able to shoot over about 350 shots per charge (DSLR's have capacities with one battery up to 1,000 shots per change, more if used with a battery grip)

* All current P&S cameras can use up to 16 gb memory cards, many 32 gb.

* All P&S cameras have a video feature and some even claim to shoot in HD, however HD under these conditions only means that they can produce a 1920 x 1080 pixel image (about 2 mp of the existing sensor). They cannot be compared to a broadcast quality 3-CCD HD video camera or the amazing new Red One modular video camera.

* Now the problem. To engineer a waterproof camera and add a waterproof audio port is not yet on the drawing boards.

The cameras that have that ability are DSLR's and are not waterproof unless you are willing to buy a $1,500 or more waterproof case. It then is no longer "portable" in any sense of the term.

Here is one of the sturdy waterproof housings you would need to buy to put an already $1,700 DSLR in to accomplish the underwater/waterproof requirement. Oh, and don't for get a lens.

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/673706-REG/Aquatica_20064_Housing_f_Nikon_D300s.html#features

http://www.nikonusa.com/Find-Your-Nikon/Product/Digital-SLR/25464/D300S.html

So, you see, waterproof cameras are still being developed by some camera makers. The first were and are all P&S cameras; the Olympus SW series, followed later by their "Tough" series camera, the Pentax underwater and now a single Canon the D10.

Here is a link to a site that has all the waterproof P&S cameras listed.

I need help selecting the perfect camera? any ideas?

justanordi

I'm looking for a camera which is priced around £100-£150, I need a camera which is pocket sized. Should look professional. I would like it to be pocket sized and maybe waterproof? I know what I'm asking for expensive. I don't want it to be heavy in weight. I don't want a camera which requires batteries. It should also have a good mega pixel.
It doesn't matter if the following above in not involved, it's just the price which I'm worried about.
It would be great if you gave me some links and what to purchase and not to purchase.

What camera would be good?

Thanks for reading

Answer
"Which one is a good camera to buy?" is a VERY common question here on YA.
A quick search would have given you hundreds of instant replies (without having to wait for answers), but once again here is my 10 cents on the subject:

I don't like to give recommendations for particular cameras because there are too many choices and too many variables in what people are looking for. I find it much more useful to help you think this over, then make up your own mind.

First of all, wanting a "professional looking" yet toy sized camera doesn't make any sense. Would you ask to race in a Formula 1 event on a toddler's tricycle? Oh and yes..... ALL digital cameras require batteries.

Point & Shoot cameras are wonderfully handy because of their small size.
When light conditions are ideal, they even take really nice photos - all of them do.

However, they all DO have limitations - they don't do very well in low light situations (i.e. noisy photos, hard to avoid blur, etc). The little onboard flash is very harsh at close range, and doesn't reach very far.
Many of them have no manual functions, so you are limited to only very basic photos, you can't compensate for unusual situations, or do many fun "tricks" and special effects.
P&S's also suffer from frustrating shutterlag and many of them chew through batteries rather quickly.

If you're ok with all those limitations, then go ahead and pick one, most of them (the same type and same price range) are rather similar. Personally I would pick either a Canon or a Nikon, and would certainly stay away from Kodak and Vivitar.

A higher end P&S will give you more manual options and better quality. Many of those even give you the option of adding a proper flash (which makes a big difference to your flash photos).

Don't worry too much about megapixels - all modern cameras have plenty enough, plus there is a limit to how many pixels you can squash into a tiny P&S sensor before you actually LOSE quality rather than gain it. 6 megapixels is about the upper limit for those little sensors.
Don't worry about digital zoom, in fact, don't EVER use it. It simply crops away pixels, i.e. destroys information. The only real zoom is optical.

Some people ask for a camera that "doesn't take blurry photos". Blur is the photographer's problem, NOT the camera's. Even the most expensive camera will take blurry photos if the person behind it doesn't know what they're doing.

Some words about special effect features such as color accent, or even just b/w or sepia:
About applying any sort of effect in camera: DON'T DO IT !
Imagine if you just happen to take the best photo you ever took - surely you would want to have it in all its glory, right?
Always set your camera to biggest size, best quality (and to color).
That way, you start with the best possible photo as your original.
Then you make a copy and edit it to your heart's content.
You have much better control over any editing on your computer, even something as simple as b&w will look MUCH better when it was processed properly instead of in camera.
You can do all sorts of things to it PLUS you get to keep your original.

Decide which features are important to you, and look for cameras that have that feature.
Then go compare a few models on www.dpreview.com .

The very best thing you can do for your success is to borrow some books and learn about photography. A bit of knowledge will make a much bigger difference to your photos than your choice of P&S camera can.

For what it's worth - if I was in the market for a P&S camera right now, my choice would be a Canon Powershot SX40 HS http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/cameras/digital_cameras/powershot_sx40_hs#Specifications

please give some advise about two waterproof camera?

what different good n bad between this two camera
a) Olympus Stylus Tough 6020 Green 14MP Digital Camera, 5x Optical Zoom, 2.7" LCD, Waterproof to 16', HD Movie 720P

b)Canon PowerShot D10 Blue 12.1MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Zoom, 2.5" LCD, Waterproof, Freezeproof and Shockproof

Answer
The D10 is a good camera, but its size and handling are awkward, it has low resolution video, a narrow lens starting at 35mm, and a short zoom range.
The Olympus 6020 Tough, on the other hand, it a lot smaller and lighter, has a wide 28mm lens, a larger x5 zoom, and high resolution 720p video.
On top of that, the 6020 costs less than the D10 as it is on holiday special discount.

Answer
While most of the cameras out there are really good, I would choose Canon over Nikon because it seems like more camera for the money. Some would say Canon withholds their best technology for high end cameras and Nikon implements their best at all levels. Before you decide, read all the text and links in the information below because it will help you know what to look for in a camera.

There is no one particular place to get great buys, but you may see something below that really helps you find the best buy. Click on the first link in the information below for an example then search for your camera of choice at the upper left. Camera prices at this link change often.

Just saw this camera at Best Buy and think it is a great camera and a best buy. It has an optical viewfinder, image stabilizer, auto focus, and uses NiMH rechargeable batteries. Read as much of the following as you can for other information and help with choosing a camera.
Canon A590IS $149.99 at Best Buy store yesterday.
http://bountii.com/deal-1523871-canon-powershot-8-0-megapixel.html ...

There are so many cameras out there it is difficult to say which is best, but digital is definitely the way to go. The second source link will be very helpful as it list most of the cameras out there with prices. The following information should help you know what to look for in a camera.

What gives a camera its picture quality?
The short answer is that it is mostly the skill of the photographer that produces high quality pictures. The lens and camera are very important, but the ability to set the scene, adjust the cameras settings, and hold the camera very still or use a tripod with auto or remote shutter actuation when required is what gets the great pictures.

High mega pixel settings may not be best. It takes longer to process and may not be needed unless required for very large pictures or enlarging small parts of big pictures. Maximum print size for a 3 mega pixel setting is 8 x 10 inches. When buying a new camera, look for an optical viewfinder (LCD not visible in bright sun) and check replacement battery prices.

The information about my camera is just to show that you don't need the biggest and best. Just know how to use the one you have.

My camera has 5.2 mega pixel, but I use 3 most of the time because it gives great results, is faster, and takes less memory. Also, it only has a 3 x optical zoom and 7 x digital zoom. I never use the digital zoom because making pictures larger works better on the computer. This is an old camera, but everyone is impressed with the quality pictures it takes ... like magic.

Check with the Geeks in several stores and compare prices. Ask what cameras they own, but don't believe everything you hear. Once you select a camera read all about it in the owner's manual. Just learned that my camera has red-eye prevention and correction. It also has adaptive lighting. You may be able to view owners manuals at this link, but will need to Login. http://www.retrevo.com/s/digital+camera ...

The source links will show most of the cameras out there with prices and help make your digital cameras work better.

Looking for a waterproof camera?

Vagabond11

I'm looking for a good waterproof camera to take kayaking. Does anyone have one they'd recommend?

Answer
I have the Pentax Optio W10. It's not that great of a camera, but it is waterproof. It ever shoots video with sound underwater. It has a good time lapse mode (takes full resolution images every 10 seconds). Remember though: waterproof cameras do not float, so have a plan to not drop it in the water.

For a better quality camera that's waterproof, I've heard the Olympus Stylus SW series are the best.

Waterproof point & shoot camera...?

Stu D'Appl

I'm looking for a waterproof point & shoot camera to use primarily when we're out surfing, but also as a pocket camera. I'm looking at the Sony TX5, the Olympus MJU 6010 and the Canon D10, but wondered if anyone had any other suggestions or experience of these types of cameras. my budget is up to £250.

Answer
Among those choices, for a camera that you expect to get wet but will not take very deep the Sony TX5 may be a good choice.
Here is a review
http://www.photographybay.com/2010/03/06/sony-cyber-shot-tx5-hands-on-review/
It's advantage is the 10 MP CMOS sensor that will give you less noise or artifact as you turn up the ISO to capture action. It will also give you better video.

I have one concern about this camera. As seen at
http://www.sony.co.uk/product/dsc-t-series/dsc-tx5/tab/technicalspecs
I see an absence of a sport or action mode. Years ago I had a Sony W70 that I used with a light duty underwater housing for kayaking. In Program mode it had an annoying habit of selecting small aperture, slow speed. It had no sport mode per se. A background blur mode favored wide aperture, but was limited to ISO 100.

So I don't know if Sony has ever fixed that problem.

I would stay away from Walmart "brand" stuff, do you really want to put your trust into a budget waterproof case? I know SealLine and I`m pretty sure Pelican will guarantee your case will be waterproof, if the box leaks due to a defect they will pay for the items in the case. I dont think Walmart will ever put that guarantee into any of their items. You`re looking for an inexpensive waterproof box, remember you get what you pay for, in both the product and customer service. Here are a few sites that will help you out

Answer
Hey, why is someone giving TomTom a thumbs down? It is perfectly legit to tell someone to use the Yahoo! guide. They can put in a fwe desires, like price or pixels, and it will lead them to some suggestions.

TomTom, maybe you can just use the link to the page: http://shopping.yahoo.com/b:Digital%20Cameras:20148412;_ylt=AphZjicVJAfeIckOrTY1sUUSssUu;_ylu=X3oDMTBpamdzYzFwBF9zAzIwMTQ4NDEyBHNlYwNiYw-- (You'll have to go there and copy the link to get the whole thing for future answers. You can have it and I won't use it if I see you are using it in the future.)

Anyhow, here's my standard "cheap but good camera" answer.

Some of our best answerers always recommends the Fujifilm FinePix F20 camera as the best-for-less choice. I have to say that I like the sample images at Steve's site (below). If Morey000 or SpaceCowboy show up after me and make this recommendation, choose them as the best answer, because I'm just passing along their suggestion. I have no personal experience with this camera. I see it at B&H Photo (available through Yahoo! Shopping) for $150; $190 with a 1 GB Sandisk memory card.

http://www.steves-digicams.com/2007_reviews/fuji_f20.html
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/specs/Fujifilm/fuji_finepixf20.asp

My brother has the A540 and my mother-in-law has the A530 - on my recommendation - and neither one has stopped speaking to me yet. Based on this and experience with other Canon Powershot cameras, I am now recommending the A550 as a nice and relatively inexpensive camera. The A550, which has more pixels, but offers less user control.

The A550 costs $170 at B&H and, of course, you'll need a memory card.

A550 review: http://www.steves-digicams.com/2007_reviews/a550.html

Consumer Reports from May 2007 has a short article on digital cameras and they recommend 10 different point and shoot cameras in the following order within groups according to camera design:
**COMPACTS**
Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX2 (Overall score 75) [$410]
Kodak EasyShare C875 (Overall score 73) [$165] - Rated better for shutter lag
Nikon Coolpix P4 (Overall score 65)
**SUBCOMPACTS**
Canon Powershot SD500 (Overall score 72)
Casio Exilim EX-Z850 (Overall score 72)
Sony Cybershot DSC-W50 (Overall score 70) [$180] [Similar to W55] - Rated better for shutter lag
Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX3 (Overall score 69) [$200] [Similar to FX-10, FX-12]
Olympus Stylus 720SW (Overall score 61) [Similar to 770SW - $360] (Waterproof)
**ADVANCED COMPACTS ("Near SLR")**
Fujifilm Finepix S6000fd (Overall score 77) [$300] - Rated better for shutter lag
Fujifilm Finepix E900 (Overall score 73) [$250]
[Things change so quickly in digital cameras that I can not find all of these models listed for sale and it's not even May yet. Prices are from B&H Photo, April 2007.]

Which of the following waterproof + GPS Cameras would you recommend?

orige

First selection ignoring price, Second selection considering also the price.

What is important for me ?
1 - Durability , real waterproof without having to replace seals yearly and so on
2 - Good picture quality
3 - Low shutter lag
4 - Ease of operation
5 - Good video

The candidates:
Pentax Optio WG-2 GPS,
Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX200V,
Nikon Coolpix AW100,
Canon PowerShot D20

Thanks,
Ori

Answer
The Sony TX200v is the best choice.

TX200v vs WG-2

TX200v vs D20

Waterproof camera : Olympus Stylus 725 SW or Pentax Optio W30 ?

James

Has anyone done comparisom between Olympus Stylus 725 SW and Pentax Optio W30? I am planning to buy one of these. Please advise me!

Answer
Here's a side-by-side comparison:
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/compare_post.asp?method=sidebyside&cameras=oly_stylus725sw%2Cpentax_optiow30&show=all

I think the Olympus is rated up to 5m depth underwater (and also shock-proof) and the Pentax only 1.5m.

waterproof digital camera?

I got a waterproof case for my camera cannon powershot a1100is. I got a hard case and in the dark it dont seem to take very good pics with the flash is that common. is it better to get a hard or soft case. I dont care much for the protection im pretty careful. Or should i just get a waterproof digital camera instead.

Answer
I recently bought myself a waterproof digi camera - and a few of my friends also have waterproof ones of different brands. It definitely depends on how much you are wanting to spend as to whether it's worth it or not.
I wouldn't reccomend the Fujifilm at all as photo quality is quite poor, you'd be better with a waterproof case just when you need it. The Sony tx5 is what I got, although the tx10 is now out and is even better. If you can afford to buy the Sony one, I certainly recommend it. I'm no photographer, but I've had a lot of people ask what camera my photos were taken on just because they have such lovely colour. The other waterproof one I'd recommend is the Panasonic DMC-TS3. Again, this camera takes great photos both in and out of the water.
The other waterproof ones I've tried I personally wouldn't buy, but in saying that you get what you pay for. They are more affordable.
I have only ever used a camera once with a hard case so can't really say much about them.

Hope that helps a little bit :)

what camera to buy? waterproof.?

While other digital cameras may use touch screens to access settings, the new Stylus 1050 SW has a shockproof, waterproof and freezeproof body that is sensitive to touch all over. So getting to the most common menu settings in situations where pushing buttons takes time or is difficult is now as fast and easy as a tap on the top, back or sides of the camera.

The rugged 10.1-megapixel Stylus 1050 SW is designed to take the hard knocks that everyday life--particularly those with kids--can throw its way, so you know that the memories it captures will be protected. It can handle five-foot drops to the hard ground, operate in freezing snowstorms, and swim with the fishes -- lethal conditions for most other digital cameras. Additionally, the sleek, lens-protecting faceplate slides down, turning the camera on and revealing the lens in an instant to capture the moment.

Witch waterproof camera do you find better?

I would like to buy waterproof camera and I am in dilemma between PANASONIC LUMIX DMC-TS2 and OLYMPUS STYLUS TOUGH-8010. Please tell me which one do you find better and why.

Or you can suggest me something else. It is important to me that it is waterproof 10m, have wide angle, make quality videos and make great shots underwater...

Thanks!

Answer
These are main features difference :

Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS2 : 4.6x Optical zoom, Dustproof = Yes, Crushproof = No, Continuous Drive = 1.8 fps, Storage included = 40 MB Internal.

Olympus Stylus Tough 8010 : 5x Optical zoom, Dustproof = No, Crushproof = Yes, Continuous Drive = 5 fps, Storage included = 2 GB Internal.

For the spec Olympus Stylus Tough 8010 is better, but rating review/popular camera a Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS2 is better, The final is depend on you.

What is the best picture quality on my fujifilm wp camera?

Q. About a week ago I bought a 10 megapixel fujifilm waterproof digital camera .A few days later I went to the zoo and thought I would test it out. Some of the pictures turned out okay but some I think would look better if I used my nikon 6 megapixel camera. I have my image quality set to 10M. I dont even know that that means. There is also, 10mN, 9M3:2, 5M, 3M, and 2M. What is the better quality for these cause I'm kind of disappointed at the moment. Please answer :]

Answer
the higher the number the better but it wont help you if your camera has a cheap lens or a cheap image processor

I want to travel the world? Any opinions will be greatly appreciated!?

Q. I want to travel the world. Currently I want to check out London, India, and Shanghai or Beijing. The point I'm trying to make is that I want to get out and see the world! Can anyone tell me how life is in the three areas I mentioned? I'm currently a 17 year old student entering college in New York City this fall. So obviously I'm going to have to wait it out before I can go see the sights!

Also...I come from a single parent home. It has always just been me and my dad. I'm kind of apprehensive on leaving because I don't want to leave my dad. Any advice?

Answer
If you want to travel and also go to college then no doubt you'll have to juggle between the two. But lets just say you get the funds together and the time to do this. Your dad is an adult, he will miss you but he will think very highly of you for stepping out into the unknown. Its worrying for the first time going alone, which is why most people dont do it, but i cant stress enough how rewarding it is.

Visiting a non western country is one of the best eye openers to the real world you can give yourself, especially if there is much poverty. The laws, food, transport, culture, traditions, evironment and the general way of life is by far different to yours and when you see, smell and hear it all for yourself it can be overhwhelming i.e. you get a dose of the culture shock. You cant just drink water from the tap without getting seriously ill, you have to watch what you eat (dont get anything from the street carts unless cooked infront of you and you know what it is) and adjusting to there food will upset your stomach, there are tourist scams, bus scams, some laws that dont seem to apply to them still apply to you, cant trust many people as your like a millioniare to them and safety is advised in alot of areas. The onlything worth trusting is your travel guide and if it says that hotel is good and so is the bus nearby then it is. If you are just going for the all organised package deal then its a breeze but not as rewarding. Throwing a backpack on, grabbing a travel guide and getting out there with no real plans set but to see the place is the way to do it. You see more, its by far more rewarding and the joy of "going where the wind takes me" adds to the buzz but most importantly after it all you come back with a huge sence of accomplishment.

India is a hard place to backpack around. The transport was occasionally unreliable and scummy, the food took a bit of adjusting, the climate was horror, the smells and noises somtimes drove me up the wall, poverty is everywhere, its dirty but the sights are amazing! London is easy, although i was coming into my 3rd year of backpacking around the world so well experianced by the time i got there. Its western, get a drink and get on a bus a go see the sights...easy. But the underground is havoc lol China, i only did the south of China, it was easy enough, the trains are great and even coming from Vietnam but the language barrier was a bit of problem there. There was much hand waving but it was nothing the travel guide couldnt handle.

The best advice i can give you is to get a travel guide, go to a country and visit its neighbouring or not so far away countries. Go back to school, and do it again. Backpack through these places. Only plan what countries your going to see and figure out where your going to go in these countries when you get there because trust me plans will go out the window once you get there. Dont be afraid, you wont be alone because you WILL meet plenty of people doing the same (i bumped into a german guy 6 times throughout SE Asia) All the info you need is in the travel guides, lonely planet is the best and very accurate...it tells you everything from language, culture, ways of life to how to get from here to there, there to that, how much and how long it takes. See some awsome sights, take plenty of photos, do it and you will come back a changed person and much more confident in yourself.

I could go on all night about my 3 years of experiances but i will only say this, memories last for life and it was the best time of my life!! now i have a son...but the travel bug is still there and hes coming with me...just not like before lol

p.s. learn how to take good photos and get a small waterproof camera (loch awe in the highlands of scotland killed my old one)

What to pack for Calcutta?

Sophie

I am studying abroad next semester in Calcutta and I am having a really hard time figuring out what to bring. I will be there from the end of December until mid April and will be staying with a host family and going to college there and would like to not offend anyone with certain outfits or whatever. I just don't know what to consider offensive or appropriate seeing as here in the US everything pretty much goes. I also want to pack the right way for the weather so any suggestions for that would be awesome too.
Actually any packing suggestions as to everything i may need would be so incredible!
Thanks

Answer
Sexy trolling by the above guy...Anyway these are th things u need..

1) There will be mostly no rains so no need to pack a waterproof/raincoat..

2) Min temp in winters in calcutta is around 10*C so u think if u need warm clothes or not..On the coldest day u might need a mild jacket in the morning.. U'll see Calcuttainas (people from calcutta) wearing full stuffed up cloths even if there is no cold... and yes if suddenly u feel really cold someday u can buy woolen clothes jackets etc in calcutta itself..its got a huge and cheap market..

3) Roads are NOT good so if u have a lotta walking or u plan to go out on foot, wear sneakers or shoes..heels are not really gonna be comfy..U can wear them if u want.. If u'r planning to party some night the better to carry just 1 pair of 'party heels'..not 10 something shoes... 2 sneakers and maybe 1 boots/shoe (optional)..

4) Avoid wearing ultra mini clothes, tube tops etc overexposing clothes..there are offcourse places where u can wear them..But not all places..try to dress like the group u'r hanging in...

5) The culture is pretty open so i dont think there are any clothes that calcutta people will find offending, but dressing in 'covered up' clothes helps u in dodging the eyes of the already gaping Indian crowd (Indians love to eyeball...rem tht..lol) ..anycase u'r goin in winter-ish time so it'll help..

6) There is possibly nothing that u cant find in calcutta which has a pretty huge world market... Only thing u cant find maybe are medicines ..so know the 'group names' of the medicines or carry the ''life saving drugs'' which u might need with proper prescription from your home country...(like medicines are avl under other names..u might not find the same medicines under the names u'r used too)..Also maybe things like tampons etc...

7) U need sunscreen, sunglasses etc but u'll be able to buy all tht in India itself..Try to ask the locals/friends umake there what they do for mosquitoes etc..the point is American bug repellants might not work on Indian bugs...

8) Carry a nice camera..capture every moment..Actually tht'w wht i do whenever i visit any country...

Digital Camera Case to go more than 10 metres?

ballet.bab

hi, i have a kodak easyshare v1003 and am looking for a underwater/ waterproof case that can go more than 10 metres. i found the seashell which seemed perfect but to my luck my camera was one of the few it didnt fit. does anyone know any cases similar to this? or just one of those bags that will go deeper? thanks

Answer
You usually need a rigid housing for depths greater than 10m as the water pressure can press buttons on cameras in flexible pouches at this depth.

If they don;'make one, you'll have to buy a compact & housing package. Some here;

What are some good waterproof digital cameras?

frecklefac

I've always thought it was a really cool idea, and lately I've been looking into getting one. I've looked at some from Canon and Olympus. I'm leaning towards Canon's D10 because it gets good reviews, is slightly cheaper than Olympus models, and because I really like Canon cameras.
Anyone that owns this camera or another waterproof camera-
Is it good price considering that it would only get moderate use?
Do you recommend this camera, or another one?
Would I be better off getting a waterproof case for my current camera (a Canon powershot a570)?

Thanks so much!

Answer
Here are 5 top rated waterproof cameras:

1. Canon PowerShot D10

$330, 12.1MP; 3X optical zoom; waterproof to 33 feet
Canonâs first foray into waterproof digital compacts looks like a cross between a Digital ELPH and a diving bell. With a waterproof rating down to 33 feet, itâs among the deepest divers in this category, but its 2.5-inch LCD and optically stabilized 35â105mm (equivalent) f/2.8â4.9 zoom lens arenât at the front of this pack. Like the other cameras here, the D10 is freeze- and shockproof, in this case surviving temperatures down to 14 degrees Fahrenheit and falls of up to 4 feet.

2. Fujifilm Finepix Z33WP

$200, 10MP; 3X optical zoom; waterproof to 10 feet
Borrowing design cues from Fujiâs teen-targeted Z30, this underwater shooter is one of the tiniest and most stylish, as well as the most affordable. Its 2.7-inch LCD is as large as they come on this type of compact. But itâs waterproof only to 10 feet, and its 10MP and 35â105mm (equivalent) f/3.7â4.2 optical zoom arenât groundbreaking.

3. Olympus Stylus Tough 8000

$400, 12MP; 3.6X optical zoom; waterproof to 33 feet
Olympus offers some of the most rugged compact cameras you can get, and its latest fits the mold. You can shoot down to 33 feet underwater, drop the camera from up to 6.6 feet, and use it in temperatures down to 14 degrees Fahrenheit. Plus, its metal construction can withstand up to 220 pounds of pressure. Sensorshift image stabilization combats hand shake, and the zoom, while not league-leading, spans an equivalent 28â102mm f/3.5â5.1.

4. Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS1

$400, 12.1MP; 4.6X optical zoom; waterproof to 10 feet
Panasonic has stepped up to the pool in a strong way with its first waterproof digital camera. Its optically stabilized 28â128mm (equivalent) f/3.3â5.9 zoom offers a nice balance of wide angle for underwater and midrange tele for land-based adventures. At 12.1MP, it affords plenty of resolution, and it has an ample 2.7-inch LCD. While we wish it could go deeper than 10 feet, its 720p video recording should make playing in the backyard pool more fun than ever.

5. Pentax Optio W60

$250, 10MP; 5X optical zoom; waterproof to 13 feet
Pentax was one of the first to offer dunkable digital cameras with its WP series years ago, and now itâs a major force. This model has plenty of room to the left of the lens to hold onto, and we like the 720p video recording, though weâd rather have a faster rate than its 15 frames per second. Its Super Macro mode should be a boon below the surface, letting you focus as close as 0.4 inches from the front of the 28â140mm (equivalent) f/3.5â5.5 lens.

I'm going away at the end of the month, and was looking to buy an underwater camera case, I'm just concerned about the safety of my camera as I have a fairly expensive one

Just wanted to know if anyone had bought one of these, and what sort of review they would give it
Thanks

Those pouches are total junk - just read the reviews for them and you'll see how many have had cameras ruined by them. Just get an actual waterproof camera, such as the Coolpix S30 or AW100.

Wireless I.P. Camera?

Q. I want to set up a wireless camera at home so that I can keep an eye on my dogs while i'm at work, can anyone recommend a reliable one?
not too expensive if possible, I live in uk.

thanks very much.

Answer
Sony SNC-M3W and a fair number of the range from sony are quite good , some even have an audio output so you can tell your dog to "sit" or "skitch him" the worst things about these camera's is the expense the ones that arent waterproof are cheaper , but you have to buy a cover for them . there is a link for ebay below , you will be looking at about $200AUD or $150US for a cheap one which will do the job as good as the rest of them I think

I don't know if the waterproof case exist for your camera, but very inexpensive and good option is waterproof pouch. Here is review of DiCAPac waterproof pouches for digital cameras. I have WP-510 and it really rocks, it's waterproof up to 20 meters underwater!

Good waterproof camera?

Bayleeisan

I'm looking for a camera that I can use underwater and as a regular camera. Nothing special really, just pictures of friends and memories. I was looking at the Fujifilm FinePix Z33WP, but reading reviews it says it the qualitly dies after a few weeks? I'm looking for something under 200$. What do you think the best camera brand is in general if you've had a several different cameras?
Thank you<33

what is a good brand waterproof digital camera?

Answer
I have an Olympus Stylus 770 SW - it is great for water and even under water pictures. Also, survived many a sand storms in Iraq. Pretty indestructible.

What's a good camera that...?

R4L

I know that this is probably asking a lot but...

Is there a camera out there that can take pictures, some video, is waterproof and shockproof that isn't that expensive.

It's alright if it's not super slim, but I'd prefer for it not to be bulky either.

I want a camera to fit this criteria for snowboarding and skateboarding.

Answer
Olympus has a whole family of cameras like that.
Stylus 1030 SW
Stylus 850 SW
Stylus 790 SW
Stylus 770 SW
The Pentax Optio W series is waterproof, but it's not officially shockproof.

is the WP5300 Black Waterproof 12MP Digital Video Recorder/Camera a good under water camera?

Christian

Answer
Waterproof cameras scare me because I hear FAR too often about leaks, even when they are brand new.

Apparently it is very easy to catch a tiny hair or some other object in one of the seals (e.g. the battery / memory card door), and that is enough to let water in.

I'd suggest buying extra warranty protection and trying it out pretty much right away if you intend to go swimming with it.

Unless you pay a LOT of money, your waterproof camera will be a little P&S, so don't expect miracles from it - the quality of most shots will be so-so at best. Yours is some no-name brand - personally, I wouldn't pay more then $20 for that.

Need Help Choosing the best damn camera/recorder i can afford.?

Nunya

I am looking for a good video recorder/camera all in one. My price range is 100-250 dollars(maybe 300 if its really worth it). My purpose for this is to make home videos of my 2 kids and me, family get together s, nature walks, just all around record and picture everything pretty much. I want the video/sound/(picture) to be the best money can buy in my price range. I am ignorant when it comes to tech specs on these types of things and really need help investing my money into something that will last me and my kids and their kids a lifetime of all the awesome memories that we will have acquired . My number one concern is video/audio, not so much pictures because i will be recording just about everything (if the video is awesome then the pictures should be to). I know it would be something else to just sit back on my couch 30 years from now and watch my 2 kids grow up all over again over the videos that i have recorded.

Thanks,
-Tim

P.s. Post links with your replies if you have any.
Which camera would you buy?

http://tinyurl.com/bewapla

Answer
Hi Tim:

Get ready for the first part of your lessons in "shopping for video": your current budget is at the bare-bones bottom of the price range.

And since almost everything made for consumers is plastic with Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) screens which crack easily (not to mention those with breakable hinges), I don't think you'll find anything "that will last me and my kids... a lifetime." The memories stored on YouTube or DVDs might last, but the camera probably won't.

If you have small children, you might consider something in the pocket-cam "candy bar" form factor (this is what iPhones, Flip cams, Kodak PlaySports, etc. are called). Flips aren't made anymore, but you can still find Kodak PlaySport & PlayTouch shockproof & waterproof models in the $80-$200 price range. (Kodak's going out of the photo gadget business, but these discontinued models are still a good purchase.)

To stretch your budget, manufacturers like Canon offer factory refurbished models at a huge discount. See Canon USA's online store: http://shop.usa.canon.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/subCategory_10051_10051_-1_17252

JVC and Toshiba make decent, affordable models. I prefer JVC over Toshiba, when it comes to camcorders in the low-price range. Your local WalMart carries both these brands.

Personally, I've had good luck buying good used video gear on eBay (and the occasional flea market), but I've been dealing in used electronics & optics for a long time. I've been able to spend $20-$50 on digital camcorders (Sony, Canon, & JVC) that were $500-$1200 when new a few years ago. (Just don't buy any "mini-DVD" camcorders; not to be confused with "MiniDV" which is a good cassette format.)

My top tips for you:
1) Since you mostly want videos and not photos, don't buy a "point & shoot" camera-looking gadget (like a Nikon Coolpix or Fuji Finepix). You'll be disappointed in the video & sound "features".

2) Ignore "Digital Zoom" and only look for "Optical Zoom" (typically 3x to 20x). Some "candy bar" camcorders don't zoom at all, but that just makes them easier to use and cheaper to buy. Try a Sony Bloggie, if you can't find a Kodak PlaySport or PlayTouch.

3) Shy away from anything that uses "AAA" size mini-penlight batteries. First, they're junk imports. And second, the battery life stinks (even if you try rechargeables). Jazz, DXG, and Polaroid are 3 junk brands to avoid. Vivitar also makes cheap models that aren't worth the money.

4) Make sure your computer (PC or Mac) is compatible with either the "bundled software" (for editing and sharing) or that the "video format" (like AVCHD) actually =can= be edited by your computer. Consumer HD video takes a LOT of "horsepower" to edit properly. Camcorders that can shoot both "standard def" (VGA 640x480) and "HiDef" are more versatile to edit & share.

5) Spend a quiet afternoon or evening at a good local camera store. (Saturdays are not ideal.) Talk to the experts behind the counter (they know tons more than any Best Buy "associate"). Be honest with your budget, but still get some "hands-on" time with various models & features. Even those beyond your price range with give you a feel for quality & what to expect in a good camcorder.

hope this helps,
--Dennis C.

the best waterproof camera?

Ikram

hello. im looking for waterproof camera. my budget is below $200. what do you guys suggest ? thanks

Answer
Fujifilm FinePix XP10 is a great camera. It is water resistant and it's really great for teenagers and if you're going on vacations. It takes clear pictures too not really blurry ones. It fits perfectly in my hand and the buttons are easy to press. It is very easy to get used to. :) I love it and it's my new favorite thing. People keep complaining about the camera, if you've had a sorta professional camera or more expensive camera before of course it's going to be different and not what you expected. You get what you pay for but in this case you get a little more than what you paid for. It is such a good camera.

Recommend a waterproof camera?

Jordan Sch

preferably under $200 and water proof up to at least 20 feet

Answer
Panasonic Lumix TS20 16.1 MP TOUGH Waterproof Digital Camera with 4x Optical Zoom is my 4th digital camera in 2 years. My $300 Nikon was damaged when daughters 5 year old friend dropped it, my $300 Canon stopped working on a Caribbean vacation due to high humidity (do not buy a Canon and use near salt water and heat), my new $300 Nikon died after an unexpected roll over in a kayak. Given that I was into digital cameras for close to $1,000 in just over a year I decided to go with a waterproof, drop resistant design and this $130 Lumix easily produces photos equal in quality to the Canon and Nikon's costing several hundred dollars more.

Waterproof, edit, & inexpensive camera? need thoughts on what kind of camera I should get.?

Kaitlyn

Lately I've really been wanting a good camera. I had one a few years ago that is very old & doesn't have edits & such. I want a camera that is:
-waterproof
-has focus & zoom
-edits like for blemishes on faces.
-different types of scenes like black & white, portrait, etc.
-inexpensive, like less than 400 or 500 dollars.
(even if there is one that has no waterproofing, than I would like to see those too. waterproof isn't my top priority & I can just get those waterproof cases)
Thanks so much for your answer!

Answer
All new digital cameras have zoom and autofocus. The Coolpix AW100 is a fantastic waterproof camera. Don't take B&W JPEGS - take them in full color and then turn them to B&W on your computer. There may be cameras that allow you to edit your photos right after you've taken them, but don't expect great results - editing is best to do using computer software.

what is the best digital waterproof camera?

dutchman12

im looking for a maybe 7-10mp camera that can go at least 20 meters deep and ive got a prica range from $100-$500
so if anyone could help it would be great

Answer
The BEST one will be a good SLR in an underwater camera housing (from IkeLite).

Your budget is not nearly enough for the camera and the housing. And at 20 meters, you will also need lighting...

For comparison ease, start with a Nikon D90, check the compatible underwater housings and lighting... reputable dealers online include adorama and bhphotovideo.

Then check any Canon PowerShot or Sony CyberShot and see if Ewa-Marine has water protection rated for the depth you need... Lighting will continue to be a problem.

What is the most durable, top of the line, digital camera/video camera?

I am going into the Marines and i need a camera that will withstand all the hell ill be going through. im looking for a tough water resistant camera that can still take good quality pictures..any suggestions?

Answer
I have an Pentax Optio W60. Since having a waterproof camera I will never go back. It gives so much more flexibility and no more hiding under an umbrella to take outdoor bad weather sports pictures. then I would recommend to go through shopping advice recommendations and choose the one that has been released recently by either Canon, Sony, Nikon, or Panasonic that carries the best reviews here - http://www.imshopping.com/

What are some good underwater cameras?

Bill Jense

I have a price range of no more than $450.
I don't have a camera, so I can't just buy an underwater housing.
When I say underwater camera, what I really mean is scuba diving camera, waterproof to at least 100 ft.

Answer
Latest waterproof cameras are quite good. On very rare occasions they come faulty, but the same is with regular digital cameras.
If you want camera, that makes good quality pictures on land or underwater, then I would suggest to look into these three cameras: Sony TX5, Panasonic Lumix TS2 and Olympus Rough 8010.
And all three of them cost less than $300 on Amazon.
You just need to decide which features you need more:
Sony TX5 is waterproof to 10 ft, when Panasonic TS2 and Olympus Rough 8010 are both waterproof to 33ft. And Sony TX5 has got the lowest resolution from these three. It's just 10.2 megapixels. Panasonic and Olympus have a resolution of 14MP, which is quite a great difference.
All cameras are shock-, dust-, sand- and freeze-proof. But Olympus 8010 is also a crushproof and designed to withstand a weight up to 220 pounds.
Sony TX5 gives you the opportunity to capture panoramic pictures with it's Sweep Panorama feature. Your images are automatically stitched together, which gives you the extra-wide view of the scenery.
Olympus 8010 has got the panoramic shooting option too. It also comes with a built-in 2GB memory, which is more than most cameras available on the market.
Panasonic TS2 has a good quality video recording. Although all these cameras record video in HD format. But Panasonic TS2 seems to be the most expensive out of them.
But if you do not need waterproof camera right now, Sony are releasing a new Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX10 in April 2011. It will have a resolution of impressing 16.2 megapixels. And it is going to be the first waterproof camera that can capture 3D still images. You can pre-order this camera and it costs $330.
