Best point and shoot camera? No delay!?

waterproof camera uk reviews on Fujifilm FinePix Z33 WP: Review
waterproof camera uk reviews image

Evan

I have a Nikon D90 and a D50 but sometimes you just can't take them everywhere. I am looking for a small point and shoot to carry with me wherever I go.

- compact
- 8+ MP
- waterproof would be awesome
- any brand as long as it takes quality photos
- NO DELAY! (thats the problem with my point and shoot now)
All cameras obviously have SOME delay... I'm just looking for one that has very litte... along with being compact (thin) and takes quality photos

Answer
Stock answer alert: This was written over a year ago, but it might help you.

If you pre-focus by pressing the shutter button half-way down while aiming at your subject - or where you anticipate your subject will be when you want to take the picture - it will help considerably. You can set your camera in "Sport" mode or "Scenery" and this will minimize the lag. If you do not use the flash, it will help. If you turn off "face detection," it will help. If you turn off the LCD monitor and use the viewfinder only, it will help. If you use the continuous shooting mode for a burst of 4 or 5 shots, there will be no pre-focus in between those shots. For most point and shoot cameras, this will give you 1.5-to-2 frames per second, but you can't use flash.

Some point and shoot cameras are better than others. I have a Canon Powershot SD950-IS that seems quite fast to me. If you go to http://www.dpreview.com and read the reviews (once they are available for the cameras you are considering), you can go to the page called "Performance" and see exactly what the tested shutter lag is, as well as several other performance benchmarks.

Here's a link showing a chart of various cameras and their shutter lag as well as the time it takes to shoot five frames. You will not see any DSLR's listed, because they have no shutter lag. If you click on the column heading, such as "One Shot," the chart will sort according to that measurement.
http://www.cameras.co.uk/html/shutter-lag-comparisons.cfm You may have to go to http://www.dpreview.com and look around to figure out what the Canon IXUS designations compare to for non-European models if you are not in Europe.

Here's a list of four good cameras with brief shot-to-shot delays of less than 1.5 seconds (in good light) each: http://www.cnet.com.au/digitalcameras/cameras/0,239036184,339271492,00.htm

Waterproof point & shoot camera...?

Stu D'Appl

I'm looking for a waterproof point & shoot camera to use primarily when we're out surfing, but also as a pocket camera. I'm looking at the Sony TX5, the Olympus MJU 6010 and the Canon D10, but wondered if anyone had any other suggestions or experience of these types of cameras. my budget is up to £250.

Answer
Among those choices, for a camera that you expect to get wet but will not take very deep the Sony TX5 may be a good choice.
Here is a review
http://www.photographybay.com/2010/03/06/sony-cyber-shot-tx5-hands-on-review/
It's advantage is the 10 MP CMOS sensor that will give you less noise or artifact as you turn up the ISO to capture action. It will also give you better video.

I have one concern about this camera. As seen at
http://www.sony.co.uk/product/dsc-t-series/dsc-tx5/tab/technicalspecs
I see an absence of a sport or action mode. Years ago I had a Sony W70 that I used with a light duty underwater housing for kayaking. In Program mode it had an annoying habit of selecting small aperture, slow speed. It had no sport mode per se. A background blur mode favored wide aperture, but was limited to ISO 100.

So I don't know if Sony has ever fixed that problem.

I'm looking to buy a digital camera for a Christmas present. She is not great at technology and needs something really simple. I need something that has decent quality since she loves to take pics but I'm not looking to spend a ton of money on it, since it is only her first digital camera.

Jim A is correct, good and cheap do not go together.

You can find inexpensive P&S cameras for under $150

what compact digital cameras have metal bodies?

Melody

I'm looking for a new (compact) digital camera with a durable metal body. I currently have a little Nikon with an aluminum body but, it's about 7 years old & needs to be updated.
It seems that there aren't very many little cameras on the market with metal bodies now.

Answer
there are quite a few cameras with metal bodies. i have a Ricoh CX-1 for example with an aluminum case.
However, if you drop it, having an aluminum body won't help if the lens is messed up.
Olympus has a line of tough cameras for example.
the lens is in a periscope design and so it does not protrude from the camera and it helps making it dust and even waterproof.
As others have written, plastics have improved and can be very tough now.

I am looking for a good camera for indoor pictures. I have 3 little kids and take a million shots indoors, but the little $100 camera I have doesn't take decent pictures. I've looked into it a bit and have found a few with good reviews and decent picture quality. The few I've looked into:

Olympus TG-1iHS 12 MP Waterproof Digital Camera with 4x Optical Zoom
Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX30V 18.2 MP Exmor R CMOS Digital Camera with 20x Optical Zoom and 3.0-inch LCD (Black) (2012 Model)
Nikon COOLPIX P310 16.1 MP CMOS Digital Camera with 4.2x Zoom NIKKOR Glass Lens and Full HD 1080p Video
Nikon COOLPIX L810 16.1 MP Digital Camera with 26x Zoom NIKKOR ED Glass Lens and 3-inch LCD (Red)
Fujifilm XF1/Blk 12MP Digital Camera with 3-Inch LCD (Black)
Olympus XZ-1 10 MP Digital Camera with f1.8 Lens and 3-Inch OLED Monitor (Black)
Canon PowerShot SX260 HS 12.1 MP CMOS Digital Camera with 20x Image Stabilized Zoom 25mm Wide-Angle Lens and 1080p Full-HD Video (Black)
Panasonic DMC-FZ150K 12.1 MP Digital Camera with CMOS Sensor and 24x Optical Zoom (Black)
Nikon COOLPIX P510 16.1 MP CMOS Digital Camera with 42x Zoom NIKKOR ED Glass Lens and GPS Record Location (Black)

I was wondering if anyone had one of these or a decent knowledge of them and could advise me on which would be best for what I'm looking for. Or another suggestion of a camera that takes good indoor pictures. I work a lot in low light and with fast kids. I'm not expecting a miracle - point and shoot cameras can only do so much, but... Any help would be appreciated!

Answer
None of the above.

http://thewirecutter.com/reviews/the-best-compact-camera-for-less-than-450-is-the-panasonic-lx7/

I have the LX3 and I love it. I also have an older and current generation dSLR and a bunch of high quality lenses. If you are mainly shooting the kids indoors, you want to have a fast lens (that relates to aperture, not autofocus) and you want something that is meant for wide to slight zooms, so you don't need the 20x zooms. Also, with most of these cameras, the small sensor size means that chasing megapixels is fool's gold. Plus, how big are you going to print something?

The Panasonic has a great lens, lets you work in lower light than most of the competitors, and takes great photos. It is pretty much the same camera as the D-LUX line which is easily twice as expensive, with a little different case design and some slight changes to the software.

Nikon and canon make quality cameras. They will give you a camera that will last. Most of these cameras will brake easily, but canons and nikons won't. You can choose any from these two companies.

Why are cameras / camcorders waterproof to certain depth?

Jillin G

This just came up in my mind, How come cameras / camcorders are waterproof only to a certain depth. Like the kodak playsport, it says it's waterproof only down to 10 feet or something. What happens if you go lower?

Answer
As you go deeper, the water pressure increases. The seals designed to keep the water out of the inside of the camera/camcorder are not designed to handle the pressure.

When you get to about 10 feet, your ears can feel the effects of that pressure.

The underwater camera or camcorder housings that are made for 100+ feet depth will typically cost more than the camera they are protecting... The deeper the housing is rated, the more challenging it is to engineer and make and the more expensive it is.

Should I bring my new waterproof camcorder to Hershey Park?

i<3electro

I got an awesome waterproof camcorder and I want to take it to Hershey Park but I'm not sure. I just want a couple of opinions before I decide. I'm more along the edge of bring it.

Answer
I like to take pictures and video when I go to an amusement park for the first time to record all the new rides I experienced...it's exciting at first, but then after awhile it is sort of annoying to have a camera/camcorder on you (especially since I am into thrill rides/rollercoasters) - Hershey Park does provide "cubbies" to put your belongings in on most rollercoasters, although they are not responsible if it gets stolen (you should put it into a bag so it's not exposed). You might want to either keep it with you and take videos when you first get to the park, then put it away so that you can truly enjoy yourself without having to worry about your camera, or store it away for the first part of the day, then take it out later after you had been on your favorite rides. So I usually bring my camera, although I usually bring my cheap camera because I wouldn't care if it got damaged...so I'm not sure what the price of your camcorder is and what rides you like to go on, but just weigh your options - if you are going on a lot of slow moving rides and just going to see the zoo/shows/factory tour ride, then it'll be okay, but if you plan on going on coasters then you might not want to leave it in the station and it might be a pain (depending on the size of it) to carry with you.

So I guess it depends - a lot of people do bring recording devices (cameras, camcorders), and I do to, but it does become a pain when you just want to be free of any extra items and just go on rides without having to worry about them. So perhaps store it away for a part of the day, but I do think you should bring it if you are into taking videos.

Answer
The Samsung W200 usually retails at about 179.00 however it is on sale at blacks.ca for 149.00. It is waterproof up to 3 meters, has full HD capability and also takes pictures. It is also very compact.

The W200 films sharp, brilliant moving pictures in up to 3 meters of water, and also repels dust and sand with its dust proof feature. The W200 is the must have camcorder, perfectly designed to take with you to the beach, pool, desert, mountain top, anywhere your adventures may take you.

The W200's F2.2 bright lens gives you the ability to shoot at higher shutter speeds during low-light conditions for stunningly clear, sharp, and blur free images. Combined with the 30 p / 25 p Back side illuminated CMOS sensor, it dramatically reduces image noise and distortion, enhancing recording quality in low light conditions.

Filming underwater generally generates low quality videos due to dim lighting and static noise. However, the Samsung W200's advanced technology and features-White Balance, Sound, Focus, Water Mode-specific to underwater environments helps you take clear, high quality video.
Often your camcorder lens fogs up when you come out of the cold or water, producing blurry images. The W200's lens features an anti-fog coating which lets the steam disperse so you can have a clear, blur free videos and pictures.

1920 x 1980 Full HD video means greater clarity, brightness and detail than ever before. And your video will be an exact pixel-by-pixel match for today?s best large screen HDTVs, resulting in life-like video with more natural colour and clarity.

Use your camcorder as a digital camera and snap 5 mega pixel resolution images and then watch them with family and friends on your TV screen.

Another is the Samsung F50 SD. It is available from The Source by Circuit City.
The F50 is the ultimate versatile camcorder, offering you incredible zoom and extended recording time, plus smart features you can't live without. It comes equipped with an incredibly powerful 52X high-zoom lens, and extra large 1/6" CCD sensor for enhanced image quality. Capturing vivid colour and clarity is easy with the customizable Smart Auto mode and Digital Image Stabilizer that delivers steady and detailed images, in any lighting condition.
Features

Type: SD Camcorder

The final one I could find is the Toshiba Camileo H30 Camcorder. It retails for $139.01 at bhphotovideo.com. Features include....

Waterproof digital camera?

I wanted a waterproof digital camera that is a good quality camera. I also would like the option of recording video clips with sound. Any suggestions?

Answer
Look at the Pentax W30 or the Olympus 1030 SW or the Olympus 790 SW cameras. Those are all waterproof to about 3 meters (10 feet). While they all will record video, I don't recall if they also record sound as well, given the waterproofing that has to be in place.

The Pentax website does say that the W30 records sound, but it's unclear if that's in conjunction with the movie mode or not.

EDIT: Ah, I found it buried in the specs. It does record sound. Even has an underwater movie mode.
Quoting Pentax:
"Movie - MOV (QuickTime Motion JPG), 30/15 FPS w/ sound"

What would be a good cheap digital camera for a teenager's christmas present?

The one I bought last year had terrible picture quality.

Answer
For an alternatives to the Canon SD1200 that everyone here seems to love, check out the Fuji F70 or F72. Fuji is always forgotten in the consumer's mind, but their EXR system produced fantastic images, and has won several awards lately.

Other considerations:

1. You get what you pay for. A $100 camera will likely not take great pictures, especially in low light

2. Look at the size of the lens. A bigger lens will let in more light. (response to a later comment: I am not talking about aperture. I am simply stating that a tiny little lens is not going to let much light in, and that can definitely contribute to lots of noise in your images. This can be compounded by the tiny little sensors in point and shoot cameras)

3. Warranty. Teens can be hard on cameras. While no warranty will cover dropped cameras or water damage, most cover wear an tear. Here in Canada Nikon and Fuji have a two year warranty, might be the same in the U.S.

4. If your child is extra hard on their possessions, consider investing in a "tough" camera. An extra 50 dollars now for shock and waterproofing may save you from replacing the camera next Christmas

Scotland Horse Adventure?

Rachel

Me and my friend are planning to go on a 8 day horse ride (not with our horses) in Scotland in 2011. So what i am asking is, Have you ever been on something like this and was it all you wished for? Tell me your fun stories!

Answer
Scotland = rain. and lots of it. So be prepared to layer like crazy - you can go from a tank top to a parka in one day. Many trail rides will take you through water, so tall boots or chaps help if you get splashed.

Get some anti monkey butt or something to help ease the pain (btw this can also be used as dry hair shampoo if you are camping with no access to hair washing - not pretty I'll admit, but a ton better than oily locks!)

Depending where you go - it is amazing. I have ridden in the borders and the highlands. Rugged amazing scenery with picnics and rests taken in tumbledown cairns. Riding past lochs with smoke on the water and then stopping at a castle. Not to mention that I am over 21, so the pub stops were worthwhile too! (Got to make sure you have pie and chips even if you can't drink!)

Make sure you take some lessons before you go - you want to be able to have a canter or mad gallop sometimes! Also make sure that you are in the right group for your abilities - I have to ride with my non rider husband and although I love him, he can't ride well, so sometimes I am stuck at a walk when the terrain begs for speed!

And take waterproof disposable cameras!

=D

I would like to get a waterproof camera that takes the picture quickly after pressing the button (Don't know what that feature is called)
Most importantly I'd like it to be under £100
Thank you for your help :)

Answer
Unfortunately you're asking too much for the money. Waterproof and little or no shutter lag just isn't feasible for £100.

You can get an Aquapac for £25 which will enable you to submerge your camera. I've never used one but looking at the website will give you some more info: http://store.aquapac.net/explore-product-range/waterproof-camera-cases/small-camera-case-418.html

That just leaves the camera. In the sub-£100 bracket have a look at the Panasonic Lumix FS18, Fujifilm T200 and Nikon Coolpix S3100.

Just don't expect miracles :)

Also keep in mind that for a bit more money (£115-£125) you can get the Fuji XP30 and Olympus Tough TG-310, both of which can be used underwater without any bag or accessory.

Should I get a waterproof camera, or a good camera with a waterproof housing? Also any type of advice on ISO settings, shutter speed, etc...would be helpful. I am an avid surfer, but all of the images I see paddling back out of my friends catching waves are just driving me crazy! I need to get a few pics from that prospective.

Answer
I have only used my G11 from the water, but getting a good camera with housing would always be preferable to a waterproof camera if you have the money. The underwater housing for most DSLR runs in the thousands. Not to mention you are going to be spending $1000+ for even a low end DSLR and a few lenses. As for ISO and other settings, obviously it depends on the available light or what kind of mood you want to create, clearly its hard to give you suggestions since shooting at midday in bright sun is going to require very different settings than shooting at sunset. In general though you probably want to stick with wider angel lenses at as small an aperture as you can get so that you can get a very deep depth of field since underwater casings dont provide manual focus and Im assuming trying to AF while treading water is killer.

What is the best type of camera for surf photography?

Answer
Depends on where you want to shoot. If you are bringing it when you surf as well, get a Olympus mju 1030 SW which is waterproof, allowing you to take it surfing as well.. Or a Pentax Optio W60 underwater camera, where both can go up to 3m(Olympus) and 4m for the pentax.
Otherwise, you should get an SLR, a Canon 50D with a 600mm IS lens, and a good sturdy tripod. Another alternative would be a Nikon D300 or Sony's a350 with the 70-400 g lens.

Answer
Most 'proper' camera housings are camera specific and won't work on just any camera, and, as has already been said, are also very expensive. Usually only the top end cameras are provided for, nobody's going to spend $2000.00 plus on a housing for a $300.00 camera.

There are cheaper alternatives, with depth restrictions, available for some point and shoot cameras. Here's a link to a few suggestions, again they are camera specific, these are for Nikon, but Canon and Pentax are available too..

http://www.twenga.co.uk/dir-Photo,Photo-Video-accessories,Underwater-housing-190

Most digital camera manufacturers offer a 'waterproof' camera in their range usable to a shallow depth of a couple meters or so and offer a much cheaper alternative to a housing. Here's one, but Pentax,Canon and Fuji all do higher spec ones

http://www.coolest-gadgets.com/20080112/underwater-camera-reaches-75-feet-without-housing/

Finally there are some sites that offer DIY alternatives, very much a user beware for most of them,

http://www.diyphotography.net/diy_the_cheap_yet_shamefull_underwater_housing

I don't think I'd risk my camera inside a condom!!!.

http://www.buyacamera.co.uk/

Its for sale on www.argos.co.uk for £129.99
http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/pa...

and the image quality, is superb, This camera is a great point an shoot camera, but it also has loads of additional functions, within the cameras manual mode, that makes it a cut above the rest in it's class.

Some of this camera's many features include, face recognition, red eye fix , image stabiliser, movie mode, it can even be used under water, ( with the aid of separate casing) to many to mention here. but really a top little camera, for the money

http://www.pentaximaging.com/digital-camera/Optio_W80_-_Azure_Blue/

its supposed to be dustproof and waterproof, and ive tried it in tap water and fresh water and its fine. and since its waterproof, it should be able to go into a pool with chlorine, right? and what about salt water? thanks to anyone who has an answer

Answer
I would imagine that you should be able to use it in salt water (otherwise what's the point - it would be very limiting to only be able to take a picture at a freshwater lake). However, read your instruction manual, it might say there. If it does not, contact Pentax and ask them.

All water actually corrodes metal (not just salt water). But I'm assuming the Optio is protected by a sturdy plastic waterproof casing.

what would i do if i drop camera i salt water?

jeonalina

I tried drying it right way and when i got home i took of the SD and battery and put the camera in a rice. still it won't work, is there any place where to have it fix. its a very expensive camera.

thanks,

Answer
Sorry to tell you but it sounds like your camera is dead and nothing you can do to save it. Water and electrical circuits don't work well together.
Once a camera (without any waterproof protection) is submerged in water it is very difficult to save it. Since it has been dropped in salt water it is even more difficult because the salt will corrode the camera more severely. If it was partly dropped in water and dried immediately with a blow dryer and all the internal parts are thoroughly dried, then maybe there is a chance of it still working. Waiting until you got home probably was still too long to wait.
Try using new batteries in the camera to check that it's not working due to faulty batteries.

I have the Olympus stylus tough shockproof/waterproof camera, but when I take videos of myself I can't exactly tell if I'm getting my whole face and if it's focusing where I want it to. I was wondering if there was a way to make it so I could see my video as I'm recording it on my computer screen so I could see myself while I do my video. Help please?

Answer
The only thing that might work is something like this camera remote mirror - which lets you see the LCD from the front of the camera. You will show up backwards in the mirror, but at least you can compose the scene.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005S4DG8G/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B005S4DG8G&linkCode=as2&tag=boatprojcom-20

However, the Olympus is a heavy camera for a compact camera so the extender might not work very well. I assume though that you could tripod mount the mirror part without a problem.

What's the best way to take great photos from a kayak?

garnetgirl

I love photography & also flat water kayaking and very much want to merge my two favorite hobbies. I have a Nikon D5100, but not sure there's a safe way to take it out with me, so I'm wondering if there's a casing I can use or if I should buy a compact waterproof camera just for kayaking. I'd definitely prefer my D5100 because of it's amazing photo quality & zoom, but I do not want to risk damaging it.
When we go kayaking, we spend a great deal of time just relaxing and enjoying nature. It's not a race

Answer
Don't know about that model but I do know you can get cases for some Nikon's. Failing that is probably safest to paddle a canoe (nice and stable and room to manoeuvre), wrap you camera in a waterproof bag or peli-type case and then just take it out when you want to shoot some pics. Or as you say get a waterproof camera - either use stand alone or get a mount and fix it to your boat or wear a helmet and fix it to that.

What hiking and camping gear should I buy?

djinvincea

Ok here's the scoop...
I want to get into hiking and camping with my wife. I currently have no gear. What should I buy? I have about $800 to work with. I am planning on camping through 3 seasons, spring, summer, and fall (a little in the winter perhaps). I am going to need a two person tent, his and hers sleeping bags, and his and hers backpacks. I am looking for gear that would take me on 2-4 day hikes. Should go with internal or external backpacks. What's the difference? Is there a good rain resistant tent within my price range? I'm thinking I would want a mummy type sleeping bag. Again, not sure though. Brand names with reasons for purchasing would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Answer
Go to www.cabelas.com and browse around, or better yet request a catalog. It's the best outdoors outfitter I've ever used. First off, since you're talking about backpacking, you need to think lightweight. Interior/Exterior just has to do with whether the frame is inside or outside the "pack" on a backpack. To decide on which type is better fo you, go to a good sporting goods store in your area and look at them/try them on. Sleeping backs should definately be the "mummy" style bags. They are around $100 each, but are very lightweight and can handle moderately cold weather (sleeping bags will have a rating in degrees to how cold it can get and you can still rely on the sleeping bag). They can also be compacted better than classic sleeping bags. Any brand in Cabela's would be a good brand, including its own brand. Also buy you and your wife sleeping pads... they are light, compact, and your back is worth it. I like the self-inflating type, but you can also get foam ones. Again any brand in Cabela's (this goes for all their products) is usually a good brand.

Tents are usually rated by seasons they can be used in (summer, 3-season, or all weather are popular ratings). Definately go for a dome-style tent rather than the boxier tents. Dome style tents are usually more sturdy, deflect water better, and are usually lighter. Also you'll want one with a good rain cover that goes close to the base of the tent, and a high waterproof rating (in mms)... 1,500mm waterproof ratings are pretty good. Also, pay attention to weight. Aluminum weighs less than fiberglass, but costs more also. A two person tent probably weighs around 15 lbs, and you and your wife can split this weight (she takes tent, you poles) or you can pack it yourself, but weight is the largest factor (besides neccesities) when hiking.

Alright, now that we have the major equipment out of the way, here are some neccessities.

-First Aid Kit and maps or knowledge of area, or GPs
-Flashlight w/extra batteries and lantern would be nice
-Good all-purpose knife/survival knife
-water purification pump AND purification pills... start out with at least 1/2 gallon of water each
-Waterproof matches AND waterproof lighter (just in case)
-Lightweight stove. Sporting good store can recommend good ones for backpacking.
-Food: lightweight, non-perishables, such as top ramen, energy bars, canned food, chocolate. Fatty foods are good to have in the woods since you will be burning a lot of calaries. They say one of the best things you can eat if your lost is butter. You may burn 3,000 or more calaries a day, so don't try to go on a diet right then. I recommend some type of powder flavoring for water... it doesn't always taste great when used with purification pills.
-Dish soap, eating utensils and backpacking pots. They usually come in a nice kit that doesn't take up much space. Look on Cabela's or at a sporting goods store.
-TOILET PAPER
-Permits. You usually have to get permits to camp in public parks/Forest Service land. You go to the closest Forestry office to pick these up. These are important if for no other reason than if you don't come back when your family expects you, they know where to start looking.
-Bear spray
-Clothes that can be layered, gloves, beanies, good hiking boots and tennis shoes if you dont mind the extra weight (for camp).

Recommended Supplies:

-Cell phone or handheld CB at least
-Camera (for obvious reasons)
-Rope(hang your food away from camp so predators dont get into it).
-Insect repellant/sunblock

There's probably more that I am missing, but those are the most important. The most important thing to do when going camping is to tell at least two responsible people you know where you're going, and give them a timeframe for coming back. Also I recommend you both take a First Aid Course... they are usually free and something could go wrong quickly (although unlikely) in the forests... snake bite, broken leg, heat stroke, hyperthermia, bear attack, drinking bad water (always purify or boil for five minutes... & retrieve from running water source. If impossible to purify, find area where water is "falling"... it's usually cleanest there).

I'm not trying to scare you away and you guys will probably have a blast, but definately be prepared.

what the best walkaround case for a digital rebel xti?

I want a case that I can walk around with. This means I only need one lense and maybe an extra battery. I don't want a huge case that I have to lug around if I am going to take lots of outdoor pictures.

Top 8 Camera Bags for Digital SLR Cameras

Digital SLR cameras are versatile and they shoot amazing pictures. They are big, though, and have detachable lenses. Finding a bag that protects and holds everything well isn't so simple. Here is a list of the top camera bags for digital SLR cameras.

1) Lowepro Micro Trekker 200 Camera Bag
This is a versatile bag that combines a compact size with room for your camera and lenses. You can get your SLR with attached lens, plus three more lenses if you cram, into this bag. It is quite comfortable to wear, as the back straps get reinforced with a waist strap.

2) Lowepro Mini Trekker Classic
If you've got a couple bodies and a few lenses to lug around, this is an ideal choice. This backpack camera bag can hold an SLR with attached 80-200mm f/2.8 lens, an additional body and about four or five extra lenses. The tripod mount is upright, which makes it much more comfortable.

3) Lowepro Toploader 75AW Camera Bag
If you want to get to your SLR on the fly, and you don't need a bunch of lenses, this is the way to go. Your SLR camera nestles inside, pointed down and ready for quick grabs for shots. It can be attached to your belt and it features an all-weather cover, which makes it great for travel photography.

4) Lowepro Off Trail SLR Camera Bag
If you plan to take your SLR hiking or camping, this is a perfect selection. The main compartment holds an SLR with lens, and two detachable side tubes can hold lenses or water bottles. It straps around your waist, giving your shoulders a nice break.

5) RoadWired Photo/Video Convertible Bag
You can get an amazing 20-some pockets and stash multiple cameras and lenses in this versatile camera bag. The dividers can be moved and adjusted to suit your needs, and you can choose between a shoulder bag or a waist pack strap. It features a hidden pocket for keys or cash. There is a self-storing rain shield that can be used as a shell in bad weather.

6) Lowepro Omni Trekker & Trekker Extreme
Be prepared for anything with this rugged backpack bag and hard case. You can pack up to two camera bodies and a half-dozen lenses. The hard case is the real selling point, though, as it is airtight and waterproof.

7) Case Logic SLR/Computer Backpack
If you're on the go with your digital SLR camera, there's a good chance you'll need your laptop for storing images. No problem. This bag holds your camera body and lenses, as well as your laptop.

8) Lowepro Pro Roller Mini
For travel photography, this rolling camera bag that operates more like a suitcase can be really handy. You can fit two camera bodies and four lenses. You can also attach another small camera bag to this one, and attach a tripod.

I've always thought it was a really cool idea, and lately I've been looking into getting one. I've looked at some from Canon and Olympus. I'm leaning towards Canon's D10 because it gets good reviews, is slightly cheaper than Olympus models, and because I really like Canon cameras.
Anyone that owns this camera or another waterproof camera-
Is it good price considering that it would only get moderate use?
Do you recommend this camera, or another one?
Would I be better off getting a waterproof case for my current camera (a Canon powershot a570)?

Thanks so much!

Answer
Here are 5 top rated waterproof cameras:

1. Canon PowerShot D10

$330, 12.1MP; 3X optical zoom; waterproof to 33 feet
Canonâs first foray into waterproof digital compacts looks like a cross between a Digital ELPH and a diving bell. With a waterproof rating down to 33 feet, itâs among the deepest divers in this category, but its 2.5-inch LCD and optically stabilized 35â105mm (equivalent) f/2.8â4.9 zoom lens arenât at the front of this pack. Like the other cameras here, the D10 is freeze- and shockproof, in this case surviving temperatures down to 14 degrees Fahrenheit and falls of up to 4 feet.

2. Fujifilm Finepix Z33WP

$200, 10MP; 3X optical zoom; waterproof to 10 feet
Borrowing design cues from Fujiâs teen-targeted Z30, this underwater shooter is one of the tiniest and most stylish, as well as the most affordable. Its 2.7-inch LCD is as large as they come on this type of compact. But itâs waterproof only to 10 feet, and its 10MP and 35â105mm (equivalent) f/3.7â4.2 optical zoom arenât groundbreaking.

3. Olympus Stylus Tough 8000

$400, 12MP; 3.6X optical zoom; waterproof to 33 feet
Olympus offers some of the most rugged compact cameras you can get, and its latest fits the mold. You can shoot down to 33 feet underwater, drop the camera from up to 6.6 feet, and use it in temperatures down to 14 degrees Fahrenheit. Plus, its metal construction can withstand up to 220 pounds of pressure. Sensorshift image stabilization combats hand shake, and the zoom, while not league-leading, spans an equivalent 28â102mm f/3.5â5.1.

4. Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS1

$400, 12.1MP; 4.6X optical zoom; waterproof to 10 feet
Panasonic has stepped up to the pool in a strong way with its first waterproof digital camera. Its optically stabilized 28â128mm (equivalent) f/3.3â5.9 zoom offers a nice balance of wide angle for underwater and midrange tele for land-based adventures. At 12.1MP, it affords plenty of resolution, and it has an ample 2.7-inch LCD. While we wish it could go deeper than 10 feet, its 720p video recording should make playing in the backyard pool more fun than ever.

5. Pentax Optio W60

$250, 10MP; 5X optical zoom; waterproof to 13 feet
Pentax was one of the first to offer dunkable digital cameras with its WP series years ago, and now itâs a major force. This model has plenty of room to the left of the lens to hold onto, and we like the 720p video recording, though weâd rather have a faster rate than its 15 frames per second. Its Super Macro mode should be a boon below the surface, letting you focus as close as 0.4 inches from the front of the 28â140mm (equivalent) f/3.5â5.5 lens.

I would like to buy waterproof camera and I am in dilemma between PANASONIC LUMIX DMC-TS2 and OLYMPUS STYLUS TOUGH-8010. Please tell me which one do you find better and why.

Or you can suggest me something else. It is important to me that it is waterproof 10m, have wide angle, make quality videos and make great shots underwater...

Thanks!

Answer
These are main features difference :

Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS2 : 4.6x Optical zoom, Dustproof = Yes, Crushproof = No, Continuous Drive = 1.8 fps, Storage included = 40 MB Internal.

Olympus Stylus Tough 8010 : 5x Optical zoom, Dustproof = No, Crushproof = Yes, Continuous Drive = 5 fps, Storage included = 2 GB Internal.

For the spec Olympus Stylus Tough 8010 is better, but rating review/popular camera a Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS2 is better, The final is depend on you.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS2 : 14.1 MP Waterproof Digital Camera, 4.6x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom, 2.7-Inch LCD, Waterproof down to 10 meters, Shockproof (rated for drops up to 6 feet), Freezeproof, Dustproof, Record high-definition movie in AVCHD Lite, etc.

Do I need to buy underwater housing for my camera?

waterproof digital camera case image

Alec

So I have this camera, Canon PowerShot D10 12.1 MP Waterproof Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5-inch LCD. It says its waterproof up to 33 feet. My mother said that I need to buy a case for it to go underwater since I might ruin it. But, I don't think so because its made to go underwater. But, I don't want to risk it. Please help!

Answer
No, it doesn't need the underwater housing. It is a "Waterproof" camera.

Is it safe to use a "Waterproof Dry Bag" for a digital camera that isn't meant to go underwater?

Kimmi

I have the Canon SX210 that have Waterproof case made for it. At least not at a normal price. Would I be able to use a "Dry Bag" like this one: http://cgi.ebay.com/Waterproof-Under-Water-Digital-Camera-Case-Dry-Bag-20m-/270635592754?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3f03236c32 and not damage my camera? If so how deep would it be able to go?

Answer
I wouldn't use a bag. I'd either buy a case or buy a waterproof camera and dedicate that to underwater use.

I used to have a FantaSea brand case for one of my cameras, but it ended up being just too bulky to take with me all the time - so I bought a dedicated waterproof camera (Olympus 8010).

While the case was rated to 200Meters and the camera is only rated to 10Meters, I don't go that deep, so the 10Meter depth is fine for me.

If you go with that bag, check to see if it has a depth rating.

If it is not specified - I would not even consider buying it.

And if there is a depth rating - I bet it's no more than 3 to 6 ft.

I'm starting now and I want to get a camera that I'll be able to use as a professional.

Answer
my first digital camera was the olympus E-300 and I'm still using it right now although I will be upgrading to the E-3 when I can afford to. It is very easy to use and the quality is amazing. It was very easy to learn and the functions are intuitive. Zuiko lenses (olympus) are one of the best glass out there and the lenses were designed for digital cameras not just using 35mm lenses and making the mount for the digital camera like most of the other brands.

here's a pro talking about his experience with the e-3

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ciyWOjrbHKQ

the E-3 is a 10mp pro camera made out of magnesium for durability and shock resistance and waterproofing (there was a video of someone cleaning their E-3 by showering it)

olympus is claiming the fastest auto focus system in the world thanks to their new SWD lenses.

and it has live view LCD and the LCD is fully articulated and waterproof as well.

here's a review of the e-3 on dpreview

http://www.dpreview.com/news/0710/07101603olympuse3.asp

most people will recommend a canon or a nikon but I wouldn't consider those because that is what everyone has. if you want to stand out as being different and innovative then olympus is the way to go.

remember though that the camera is just the tool, it's your eye and talent that will be what makes you a great photographer...don't be afraid to be creative and find what your style is (freeman patterson, in one of his workshops, actually gives each person a hoola hoop and you close your eyes and throw it as hard as you can and then you spend the afternoon photographing stuff in that circle).

Which digital camera would you suggest buying?

destiny21

I'm looking to spend less than $150, but will go up to $200 if necessary. I'm just looking for the best camera I can get for a low price. Which digital camera would you suggest and why?
Thanks! :)
Answers are great so far! Just a couple more details on what I'm looking for : small, easy to carry, used mostly to take pictures of outings (more people than scenary, but probably that too). Thanks! :)

Answer
Some of our best answerers always recommends the Fujifilm FinePix F20 camera as the best-for-less choice. I have to say that I like the sample images at Steve's site (below). If Morey000 or SpaceCowboy show up after me and make this recommendation, choose them as the best answer, because I'm just passing along their suggestion. I have no personal experience with this camera. I see it at B&H Photo (available through Yahoo! Shopping) for $150; $190 with a 1 GB Sandisk memory card.

http://www.steves-digicams.com/2007_reviews/fuji_f20.html
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/specs/Fujifilm/fuji_finepixf20.asp

My brother has the A540 and my mother-in-law has the A530 - on my recommendation - and neither one has stopped speaking to me yet. Based on this and experience with other Canon Powershot cameras, I am now recommending the A550 as a nice and relatively inexpensive camera.

Canon just introduced the A550, which has more pixels, but offers less user control. I'd be happy with the A540, but the A550 is probably also worth considering, especially since the A540 has been discontinued. I've seen it for $140 in some stores like WalMart and Target.

The A550 costs $160 at B&H and, of course, you'll need a memory card.

A550 review: http://www.steves-digicams.com/2007_reviews/a550.html

Steve's reviews updates the "Best Camera" list periodically:
http://www.steves-digicams.com/best_cameras.html

Consumer Reports from May 2007 has a short article on digital cameras and they recommend 10 different point and shoot cameras in the following order within groups according to camera design:
**COMPACTS**
Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX2 (Overall score 75) [$410]
Kodak EasyShare C875 (Overall score 73) [$165] - Rated better for shutter lag
Nikon Coolpix P4 (Overall score 65)
**SUBCOMPACTS**
Canon Powershot SD500 (Overall score 72)
Casio Exilim EX-Z850 (Overall score 72)
Sony Cybershot DSC-W50 (Overall score 70) [$180] [Similar to W55] - Rated better for shutter lag
Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX3 (Overall score 69) [$200] [Similar to FX-10, FX-12]
Olympus Stylus 720SW (Overall score 61) [Similar to 770SW - $360] (Waterproof)
**ADVANCED COMPACTS ("Near SLR")**
Fujifilm Finepix S6000fd (Overall score 77) [$300] - Rated better for shutter lag
Fujifilm Finepix E900 (Overall score 73) [$250]

[Things change so quickly in digital cameras that I can not find all of these models listed for sale and it's not even May yet. Prices are from B&H Photo, April 2007.]
