What is a good, cheap, and simple digital camera?

I'm looking to buy a digital camera for a Christmas present. She is not great at technology and needs something really simple. I need something that has decent quality since she loves to take pics but I'm not looking to spend a ton of money on it, since it is only her first digital camera.

what compact digital cameras have metal bodies?

I'm looking for a new (compact) digital camera with a durable metal body. I currently have a little Nikon with an aluminum body but, it's about 7 years old & needs to be updated.
It seems that there aren't very many little cameras on the market with metal bodies now.

there are quite a few cameras with metal bodies. i have a Ricoh CX-1 for example with an aluminum case.
However, if you drop it, having an aluminum body won't help if the lens is messed up.
Olympus has a line of tough cameras for example.
the lens is in a periscope design and so it does not protrude from the camera and it helps making it dust and even waterproof.
As others have written, plastics have improved and can be very tough now.
