Fuji FinePix J150W Underwater Housing?

philliesje

Can anyone tell me if there is an Underwater Housing out there that will fit a Fuji FinePix J150W and is rated for at least 60 feet in depth?

Answer
If there is, you would pay more for it than this one here, case AND a 5Mp camera.. for under $60 bucks..

http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?InvtId=DC-WPCST531TBLK-VP-R&cm_mmc=GoogleProducts-_-DigitalCameras-_-5MegapixelCameras-_-DC-WPCST531TBLK-VP-R&zmam=2003677&zmas=15&zmac=159&zmap=DC-WPCST531TBLK-VP-R

Yes, it's a long link, but for under $60.00 and down to 50 ft, it can't be beat.

I bought mine at Wal-Greens last summer, paid $89.00 then. It has only been in my pool and hot tub, but boy oh boy, it works and man, can you capture good black mail evidence with it under water.. LOL

Have fun and dress accordingly

How deep can I go underwater with a disposable camera ?

H2O

Canon does not support an underwater housing for my A560. The alternative is a cheap plastic brand that I don't trust. So, since I don't have more money to spend, I was looking into disposable cameras, but most of them are rated mostly up to 20 feet. Is there any brand that can go up to 60 feet ?

Answer
Not disposables. I'll bet that if you talk to a canon Rep, you'll find that the 570IS and your camera may very well both use a similar housing (WPDC12). Their dimensions are the same except in width ( off by .1) which may not matter depending on how the camera is mounted in the housing and all the controls appear to also be the same and in the same locations. It would just be a tad odd for Canon to manufacture a housing for the camera under and the camera over, your own model and not support yours.
For that matter, Ike Lite ( if you want to spend the bucks for a serious housing) likely has done the same thing and it's 570IS housing may also work with your A560. Doesn't hurt to ask them. I know the layouts of the Ike Lites and those housings have room to spare in every dimension. The controls are pretty flexible as well.

Can you confirm New Zealand's Milford Track options?

High Perfo

I'm considering walking the Milford Track. So far I can only find 2 options for doing this:

Either:

1 - I carry everything I need, including bedding & food, and stay in in a bare-bones lodge without a shower option. This is the cheapest option, but requires carrying quite a bit of weight (problem for me right now with a foot injury (yes, I can do the hike, but should keep the weight pressure to a minimum).

or

2 - Pay for a guided tour, where the hiker (I) don't carry more than what I want, and have food & bedding provided (among other things). This costs more (the cheapest I've seen is $2,000/person, at $400/day), but easier on the body.

I'm stuck in the middle. Not the guided tour type at all, but probably shouldn't carry so much weight on my feet (such as bedding & lots of food). Got any solutions, insight & ideas?

Thank you.
Thank you all so much for the insights. How could I pick a best answer?...I don't know...

I can manage carrying around 15 pounds (approx. 35 kilos) for 4 days straight, but not more. Have Plantar Fasciitis in both feet, comes & goes, but sure to be an issue if I stress them for days in a row. I'm considering trying to find a series of day hikes around Fiordland to be able to break up the stress on the feet by alternating days.
Would anyone have any ideas on good 1-day hikes, particularly in the Fiordland area, but anywhere in NZ is helpful as I'll generally be driving around much of both islands?

I'm also hoping for a 1-day hike near Fiordland that allows me to gain elevation similar to the great experience of McKinnon Pass...but in a day...up then down...due to me feets :)

Thank you.

Answer
Hello!
When are you planning to go? If you go in summer you can easily pack light but if you go in winter is a different story...
Anyway, I've done the Routeburn track in January last year (summer) and I carried a small pack keeping my things to a minimum. I had one lightweight sleeping bag, one change of clothes and waterproof clothes(just in case!), camera and videocamera, utensils for eating, dried food, snacks and I kept it to less then 5 kg...The track was 3 days but I had food for an extra day I spent in Milford area.
I don't know how much weight you can carry without hurting your foot so if 5 kg is too much you should consider a guided tour: you don't have to walk with them, you can follow your pace and enjoy the nature (the Milford track during high season is one way only so you won't meet anybody!)
By the way if you want to do the Milford track you have to book well in advance!
Whatever you decide to do enjoy New Zealand, I loved and it is my favorite country!

I don't know any day walk in the Fiordland but I've done a really nice one in Arthur's Pass, the Bealey Spur track, it's a day walk around 4 or 6 hours, with amazing view of the mountains, it's not on the Lonely Planet so there's no crowd!
But anyway wherever you go in NZ you can buy the small brochures of parks with all the day walk, it's very well organized, plus the guys working there will help you choosing one, they are experienced and very concerned about people safety so they will help you properly!
Obviously another great one is the Tongariro Alpine Crossing in the North Island (Mount Doom if you are a LOTR fan) you won't meet elves and other little creatures but you'll spend an amazing day through volcanos, craters, blue lakes and lush forests! It's 19.4 k but easily done in 6 hours.
Please when you are in NZ visit the Catlins, most of the people don't go there but it is an amazing area where you'll have the chance to see amazing wildlife!
One last thing, if you go to Waitomo to see the caves (North Island) spend the night there and ask the locals where to see glowworms in the night, there is a place in a forest where there a milions of them and they look like stars and it's really a great feeling when you are there (also not in Lonely Planet!!!)
I really really love it!!!
Ciao

Which camera should I buy for travel vlogging on YouTube?

rosie

I am going on my "gap year" this year, travelling, and I want to record travel vlogs (video blogs) and put them on YouTube for my friends and family to keep up with what I'm doing, and so I can look back on all the awesome memories later...
I will want to use the camera to film during my adventures when travelling (this might include walking, theme parks etc. so the camera will be moving, image stabilisation etc. would be a factor) and also to sit and talk to the camera indoors in the typical vlog style.

What will be important to me is:
-image quality (ideally I'd like 720p or 1080p, I want it to look as good and as crisp as possible
-memory capacity (I want to be able to store a couple of hours of footage at a time)
-battery time (I want to be able to film through the day while I'm out and about, without stressing too much about running out of battery)
-compatibility with MacBook and iMovie '11 (I want to be able to either USB connect or use a memory card reader, and easily import and edit the footage in iMovie)
-It would be quite cool to have a camera that has one of those viewing screens that flips right around when you're filming, so you can see yourself and make sure you're in the shot and everything... this isn't completely necessary, but would be a great bonus :)
-PRICE - I don't have much to spend at all, I'm just looking for the best I can get with what I have, I have saved carefully, that's why I'm being so pedantic about buying the right camera

Anyway, I've been researching for days and at this point I think it's come down to a choice between the Sanyo Xacti VPC-CG21, the Sanyo Xacti VPC-CS1, the Kodak Playsport Zx5 (you can film underwater with this one, which is really cool!) and the Sony DCR-SX21E (is this one even HD, I can't work it out??). They're all very different, I know, but they're the things available in New Zealand that are affordable for me...

If anyone has any advice, just if you've even used one of these cameras and have some feedback, or if you've used another and would recommend it over these options, PLEASE let me know!! :) I'll make sure to choose a best answer and everything, so you get the points you deserve...

Thanks!
The camwhich website does look like a great resource, but it only has still cameras not video cameras... :(

Good underwater/pool photo ideas?

?

Im gonna hhave a Photoshoot with my friends, its gonna be on a pool and i really want yo have a really creative photo.. Its for a contest!! :) thanks

Answer
When my friends an I do underwater/water pictures we try to get as crazy as we can. If you are able to take the picture on top of a high board, make a shape in the water and take it from above, those look really cool! Another one is jumping in the water, either a view of your front or back cause both end up looking great. When your underwater you can try a pyramid or the "surfing" pose. Most important have fun and once you start it's really easy to pick out a pose that you'll love!

Good luck and I hope you win and think of a fun, creative, and crazy pose.

Tip if its your first time using an underwater camera:
1. Wear goggles when taking the picture (clean so you can see)
2. Take more than one cause bubble can and will probably get in the way
3. Make sure everyone goes down about the same time that way no one runs out of breath

Which underwater film camera would you recommend?

Nina

minolta weathermatic or canon sure shot A1 panorama date pack. Give me details about each camera. Pro's and cons and which would give me a better picture and which has better quality.

Answer
I guess you're talking about the Weathermatic 35DL, not the 110 pocket version, or the "Vectis" APS version.
I'd go for the Canon hands down (or get something else). Bearing in mind that these are old cameras now (and their O-ring seals may well be past their prime, i.e.you're taking a minor gamble.): If you check and look after the back-door o-ring, keeping it and the o-ring groove scrupulously clean, - you should be ok.

As you know both cameras let you go to 5m and the Minolta has a dual lens (35 and 50mm) set-up with the canon only one lens. However, it is a bit wider and that's a good thing.
AF: Neither camera does AF underwater. The Canon lets you shoot quite close-up 45cm, giving you an image area of about a foot wide which is MUCH BETTER than the Minoltas 1.2m and thus the deal clincher. It also has a much easier to use finder with goggles on and gives you MUCH more flexibility with film speed (Minolta only offers ISO100 and 400).
Also (and I have no extensive experience with either camera, just used them briefly and a long time ago), I heard that people had v. good experiences with the Canon, non-leaking wise. :)

Waterproof digital camera?

mommyof2

I wanted a waterproof digital camera that is a good quality camera. I also would like the option of recording video clips with sound. Any suggestions?

Answer
Look at the Pentax W30 or the Olympus 1030 SW or the Olympus 790 SW cameras. Those are all waterproof to about 3 meters (10 feet). While they all will record video, I don't recall if they also record sound as well, given the waterproofing that has to be in place.

The Pentax website does say that the W30 records sound, but it's unclear if that's in conjunction with the movie mode or not.

EDIT: Ah, I found it buried in the specs. It does record sound. Even has an underwater movie mode.
Quoting Pentax:
"Movie - MOV (QuickTime Motion JPG), 30/15 FPS w/ sound"

ok so I want to get a new camera and I'm not sure if this one is a good one...if you have this camera can you give me some details about how good the quality of the pic is, and the zoom...

Answer
While most of the cameras out there are really good, I would choose Canon over Nikon because it seems like more camera for the money. Some would say Canon withholds their best technology for high end cameras and Nikon implements their best at all levels. Before you decide, read all the text and links in the information below because it will help you know what to look for in a camera.

There is no one particular place to get great buys, but you may see something below that really helps you find the best buy. Click on the first link in the information below for an example then search for your camera of choice at the upper left. Camera prices at this link change often.

Just saw this camera at Best Buy and think it is a great camera and a best buy. It has an optical viewfinder, image stabilizer, auto focus, and uses NiMH rechargeable batteries. Read as much of the following as you can for other information and help with choosing a camera.
Canon A590IS $149.99 at Best Buy store yesterday.

There are so many cameras out there it is difficult to say which is best, but digital is definitely the way to go. The second source link will be very helpful as it list most of the cameras out there with prices. The following information should help you know what to look for in a camera.

What gives a camera its picture quality?
The short answer is that it is mostly the skill of the photographer that produces high quality pictures. The lens and camera are very important, but the ability to set the scene, adjust the cameras settings, and hold the camera very still or use a tripod with auto or remote shutter actuation when required is what gets the great pictures.

High mega pixel settings may not be best. It takes longer to process and may not be needed unless required for very large pictures or enlarging small parts of big pictures. Maximum print size for a 3 mega pixel setting is 8 x 10 inches. When buying a new camera, look for an optical viewfinder (LCD not visible in bright sun) and check replacement battery prices.

The information about my camera is just to show that you don't need the biggest and best. Just know how to use the one you have.

My camera has 5.2 mega pixel, but I use 3 most of the time because it gives great results, is faster, and takes less memory. Also, it only has a 3 x optical zoom and 7 x digital zoom. I never use the digital zoom because making pictures larger works better on the computer. This is an old camera, but everyone is impressed with the quality pictures it takes ... like magic.

Check with the Geeks in several stores and compare prices. Ask what cameras they own, but don't believe everything you hear. Once you select a camera read all about it in the owner's manual. Just learned that my camera has red-eye prevention and correction. It also has adaptive lighting. You may be able to view owners manuals at this link, but will need to Login. http://www.retrevo.com/s/digital+camera ...

The source links will show most of the cameras out there with prices and help make your digital cameras work better.

Need digital camera with viewfinder and LCD screen?

cyranae

I need to buy my husband a digital camera that has both a viewfinder and an LCD screen. He is being deployed to Iraq and he's heard from the person he's replacing that it's very difficult at times to perceive the subject through the LCD screen because of the light there (too bright to see the screen). He needs this for his job so it is fairly important. I've tried to look at specs online but many descriptions do not indicate whether or not there is a separate viewfinder. I'm looking for something in the 150-300 $ range. He's leaving soon so any help you can give me will be appreciated.

Answer
Most point and shoot digital cameras do. If he is going to Iraq you might want to get something rugged, the olympus stylus's are waterproof (which would probably double as dust proof), shockproof and a bunch of other proofs. Run for about 300.
http://www.amazon.com/Olympus-Stylus-1030SW-Digital-Optical/dp/B0011E87QI/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1223658586&sr=8-2
or a little cheaper

Otherwise I believe all the canon powershot models have viewfinders as well I believe. The Powershot 850IS is good, but not sealed against anything.

Olympus Stylus SW 850 vs. Olympus Stylus SW 790?

Be happy

I might be getting a digital camera for my birthday, and I really like these cameras. I am turning 13 and I'm very active, so I think this will be a good choice. I really like the waterproof/shockproof features as well as the other ones. But, what I'm stumped on is the better battery/better (underwater/regular) video/picture quality. I am just not sure which camera is better overall. So, please tell me the camera you think is best and why. Thank you so much!!!!

Also, this is just off to the side, but which color do you think would be good?? I can't choose between the pink and blue. I don't realy like the black, silver, of orange too too much.

Answer
btw pink is totally a good color for the camera. and the 850 sw is very good i've got one with no problems yet had it for a while now and its just great. pix are very clear and its simple freeze proof waterfprroof and everything so you should totally go with the the 850. hope this helps.

Is it okay to take an Olympus Stylus 850 SW to the beach?

chancemast

I just recently bought it, and I have tried it underwater in a pool, but I wasn't sure if it could be in like sand and salt(water)
(It's a waterproof, shockproof, freezeproof camera)

Answer
Yes, it should be just fine because on the Olympus 850 SW webpage it says...

"WATERPROOF (10FT).
Innovative waterproof seals and gaskets allow you to take underwater movies and amazing pictures in a pool, lake or ocean."

and..."The perfect camera for a trip to the great outdoors, the airtight design makes the camera impervious to dust, dirt and other particles."

and..."Whether you're taking pictures on the beach, at night, behind glass or even underwater, there's a Shooting Mode that's ideal for the occasion".

However, you should still take care when using it at the beach...don't go dropping it or burying it in the sand or anything.

Have a look on...pages 62 and 66...of your instruction manual, on how best to care for, clean and maintain the camera (especially after a trip to the beach). Looking after it correctly will ensure that the camera remains in good condition for a long time.

Should I upgrade my waterproof camera?

cellpho

I have been using my Canon powershot D10 for 3 years now and I'm tempted to get a new waterproof camera. Is it a good idea to change it to the D20? I've read that the improvements aren't that much different so I'm nor sure it's worth it to sell my old D10 to get the D20. What other waterproof camera would be considered an upgrade to the Canon D10?

Answer
If your camera is sufficient, why upgrade?

If you truly need to upgrade, I would go with a DSLR and an underwater housing. This will allow you to go to 200meters (scuba diving standard depth rating), and take higher quality photos.

But the housing itself can cost more than the DSLR.

I'd stick with the Canon D10 unless it isn't specifically doing something you need it to do.

Otherwise, the only worthwhile upgrade for an underwater camera is it's depth rating. There are two defacto standards for underwater compact camera depth ratings; 3M (3 meters or 9ft) and 10M (33ft). The D10 is rated for 10M if I recall.

However, some compact waterproof cameras are rated deeper. The Nikon AW110 for instance is rated for 18M (59ft).

Also, realize these depth ratings are in static (still) water. Once you get into an ocean surf, raging river, or ocean current, the pressure on the camera increases. This affects the depth rating, and artificially acts like deeper water than the actual depth.

For that reason, you always want to over-specify the depth rating (which is why the standard scuba depth rating is 200m, even though regular divers will never go that deep).

Even then, my recommendations is to use 3M rated cameras only above water, 10M rated cameras for snorkeling, and if you want to scuba, get a 200M rated camera housing.

I'm searching for a new camera and was wondering if anyone used or knew of a good brand of underwater cameras?
It would be used just for my personal use but I still would like the crisp and sharpened photos avalible with the camera.

Thanks :]

Answer
best camera
or best camera at a price
still or movie
what depth are you planing to go to
the Olympus 1030 claims its waterproof to around 10m. but Ive heard some horror tales where its leaked. however you do pay a price optically for the 1030's the picture quality isn't as good as similarly priced compact cameras, but then again those cameras aren't as bombproof as the 1030

all the SLR makers including Olympus produce cameras and cases

if you are going down the SLR route then the Olympus E4xx series is the smallest and lightest SLR on the market, and it does have a dedicated underwater case made by Olympus

what is the best digital waterproof camera?

dutchman12

im looking for a maybe 7-10mp camera that can go at least 20 meters deep and ive got a prica range from $100-$500
so if anyone could help it would be great

Answer
The BEST one will be a good SLR in an underwater camera housing (from IkeLite).

Your budget is not nearly enough for the camera and the housing. And at 20 meters, you will also need lighting...

For comparison ease, start with a Nikon D90, check the compatible underwater housings and lighting... reputable dealers online include adorama and bhphotovideo.

Then check any Canon PowerShot or Sony CyberShot and see if Ewa-Marine has water protection rated for the depth you need... Lighting will continue to be a problem.

Answer
No, the Fujifilm Z33 is not very good...it doesn't produce very good image quality, etc. There are a number of much better waterproof cameras available.

Here are two reviews...

In the below link you will see which are the better waterproof cameras...
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/Q209waterproofgroup/page17.asp
The Z33 is one of the worst performers and Olympus isn't much better.

The Canon D10 has the Color Swap and Color accent features that you want. However, any colour changes or editing can be done in post processing in your photo editor software.

What are five benthos of marianas trench and what are their adaptations?????? PLease?

Keith

Hey I need to know five animals that live in the bottom of the marianas trench (benthos) and I also need to know their adaptations.

Answer
The video camera on board the Kaiko probe spotted a sea cucumber, a scale worm and a shrimp at the bottom. At the bottom, the Nereus probe spotted one polychaete worm (a multi-legged predator) about an inch long. Most of the organisms collected were simple, soft-shelled foraminifera.

Giant Single-celled Xenophyophores: Recent footage from National Geographic Dropcams deployed in the Mariana Trench revealed these incredible creatures, which can reach 4 inches (10 centimeters) in length and which each have many nuclei but just one enormous cell. They can take various forms, from disclike to wildly undulating, and they consume food by surrounding and absorbing it, similar to more familiar microscopic single-celled creatures such as amoebas.

Fish: Snailfish (Pseudoliparis amblystomopsis) currently hold the record as the deepest living fish ever photographed, having been filmed 4.8 miles (7.7 kilometers) beneath the surface of the Pacific Ocean in 2008. But Jacques Piccard and Don Walsh of the Trieste bathyscaphe mission reported seeing a flatfish when on the bottom of the trench in the 1960s. Since they had no underwater cameras and didnât collect the fish as a sample, many have dismissed the sighting as a trick of the eye. Walsh says heâs certain that what they saw was a fish. The DEEPSEA CHALLENGE expedition could potentially confirm the Trieste pilotsâ story half a century after their sighting.

Crustaceans: Amphipods are some of the most commonly encountered deep-sea creatures living on and above the seafloor. Related to shrimp, these armadillo-like crustaceans will devour almost anything they can find, from bacteria, phytoplankton, and fish to the remains of large animals that have come to rest on the ocean bottomâand theyâve even been known to prey on each other.

Echinoderms: Sea cucumbers (holothurians) are relatives of starfish and are found at all depths in the ocean. They amble across the deep seafloor, vacuuming up mud and digesting the minute organic particles found within. This strategy serves the sea cucumber wellâin places they can make up 90 percent of the biomass in the deep sea, making them one of the dominant forms of life on Earth. Strange shapes, patterns, and forms of motion continue to surprise and intrigue scientists with each discovery.

Mollusks: Water pressure at the bottom of the Mariana Trench makes growing a shell a challenge. At great depths calcium carbonate, the material that makes seashells hard and strong, is slowly corroded by seawater. But this hasnât stopped snails and bivalves from colonizing the trenches. Snails with soft shells have been discovered in the Japan Trench, and dense communities of clams inhabit trench sites where methane-rich fluids percolate through geological faults in the seafloor.

Cnidarians (Sea Anemones, Coral, and Jellyfish): Cnidarians could be encountered on the DEEPSEA CHALLENGERâs journey to the depths, on or above the trench floor and on the steep, rocky walls of the trench. Jellyfish and their relatives have been photographed drifting at great depths, but none have ever been collected, and itâs unknown if they belong to a species new to science. Rocky outcrops deep in the trench may also harbor undiscovered corals, anemones, and other organisms that need a hard surface to grow upon.

What Japanese movies or TV shows do you recommend me to watch?

Jim G

I want to watch some Japanese movies or TV shows. What do you recommend me to watch?

Answer
Japanese shows can be very funny but they are very odd since they are based on embarrassing and torturing people. One of my favorite shows took place in a marine park where they had a small shack overlooking the Piranhas. They were showing people the pictures of what could happen to a cow if it got eaten then they dropped a big fish into the water. The water boiled up for about a minute then they pull the fish bones out. Just then, the guy doing the demonstration gets a phone call and steps outside.

Now we see what is really happening. They have a giant speaker under the shack and six Japanese body builders. They speaker starts playing a rumbling sound and the body builder tip the shack into the pond. The floor is waxed so the person inside is dumped into the pond screaming. Then we see the underwater camera and there is a guy in a wet suit(who switched the fish for the bones on the fishing line) and he starts pinching the guy who fell into the water. The guy is screaming in fear thinking he is being eaten alive. Then he finally figures out it's all a prank and has to be polite and say "oh you got me good, very funny!"

I saw them do this to about six celebrities and I was laughing so hard I could hardly breath. This is pretty typical of a Japanese show though. In another one, they had a contest to see who would keep their legs in a box full of bees and someone underneath was putting clothes pins on their legs. Seeing how long someone can suffer is big in Japan.

As for movies, Sanjuro is good as well as Tampopo. Tampopo is only about 20 years old and set in modern Tokyo. It's very funny. Most of the films I know are Samurai though. The Hidden Fortress, Seven Samurai, Yojimbo, Samurai Banners.

What is a good camera for travel?

howdy

I am going to Mexico and need to get a camera for the trip. I would love one that goes underwater but I can always get the cheapo disposables for that if I need to. I already own an expensive professional camera and am not taking it for fear of it getting stolen or broken so please don't recommend any pricey high end cameras. I just want a reasonably priced digital point and shoot that gets high quality pictures that is small and light enough to carry around all day in the ruins. Anybody know of any that take great shots?

What are some good cameras?

Thy

I love photography and might take classes on it, but I need a real camera now. I like taking pictures of nature, landscapes and buildings. I want the camera to have at least 10 mega pixels, I have a $250 dollar buget, but I only want to spend $200. I would also like the camera to be waterproof, but it doesn't have to be. Oh, also I want the camera to be able to get every tiny detail.

Sorry for the long list, is their any possible camera? Can you please give me links?

Answer
Well of course there are cameras that can do that but I don't think you'll find a really good one for under $250. If you're really interested in photography you'll need to get a DSLR sooner or later. It might be better till you have a little more money to spend, like around 400-500 bucks, so you can get a decent DSLR for start, like the Nikon D3100 or the Canon t2i.
There are some quite good point-and-shoot cameras like the Nikon S3100 or maybe the Nikon P300 that are in your budget, but a point-and-shoot will never give you the quality a DSLR can give. Also, on a DSLR you have the ability to change lenses for different types of shooting, like telephoto lenses with a huge zoom range or macro lenses for incredible detail.
If you're willing to buy a used or refurbished (which is just as good as a new one) camera, you can check out Adorama.com. Look for refurbished DSLRs. I think you can get a Nikon D3000 for around 300 bucks if it's still there. Just use their search bar.

Here's a list of the best point-and-shoots:

And here's a P300:

It's a nice camera, if you need a waterproof camera or are looking for something particularly "stylish". If you want something with more waterproof capabilities, the Canon PowerShot D10 is rated to 33 feet (vs 10 feet for the Fujifilm).

We actually suggested the Fujifilm in our Buyer's Guide. http://www.techlicious.com/buyers-guide/digital-cameras/

What is better: Underwater camera or an underwater camera case?

Nick from

My Situation: I'm going to a family reunion in Hawaii in a couple of weeks, and was thinking taking pictures while snorkeling may be fun. I could buy one of those $10 disposable underwater film cameras, but since I go into caves a lot which are wet, I thought getting something not disposable could be useful there also. I don't want to spend too much money, but am exploring my options.

What I've tried so far: I went to REI the other day, and bought a $30 heavy duty underwater plastic baggie with a hard lens opening that goes over the camera lens part. I tried it out with the digital camera I already have and noticed the pictures are okay if I don't use the flash, but once I use the flash the pictures come out very cloudy. That was the AquaPac brand, and I'm not sure if the DiCaPac brand name underwater baggie would be any better or not. As an alternative, I'm not sure if those "hard case" underwater housings take care of this "flash problem", although with how much they cost for my particular snapshot camera model, it may be cheaper just to buy a real underwater camera. I'd also be worried that a hard case housing wouldn't be useful if I decide to upgrade cameras later on, since they're specific to the camera model?

So, moving the story forward, at Costco there's an underwater camera usually $300, but I just bought it on sale for $150, trying to figure out if I should open it or return it. It's a Nikon Coolpix AW100. It's waterproof to 33 ft, drop proof to 5 ft, and has "underwater mode" (although the camera I already have has an "aquarium mode", not sure if that would help or not).

My Question: I'm not sure if it would be best to go with the Nikon AW100, or get a better underwater heavy duty baggie case with the hard lens to go with my existing digital camera (so that I can always upgrade my digital camera later on), or some other option?

IT'S NOT NEEDED TO READ BELOW UNLESS MORE DETAILS ARE NEEDED:

The underwater camera I found at Costco is http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-COOLPIX-Waterproof-Digital-Camouflage/dp/B008JI0R8U/ref=sr_1_4?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1365876725&sr=1-4&keywords=Nikon+AW100

If I do get some underwater housing, the digital camera I have now is a Canon Powershot A720 IS that I got in 2007 http://www.amazon.com/Canon-PowerShot-A720IS-Digital-Stabilized/dp/B000V1VG2E/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1365875483&sr=8-1&keywords=Canon+Powershot+A720+IS

The type of underwater housing which gave me foggy pictures when using the flash was http://www.amazon.com/Aquapac-Small-Camera-Case-Shown/dp/B0012BRAFY/ref=sr_1_24?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1365875732&sr=1-24&keywords=aquapac+underwater+case

The housing which I haven't tried but don't know if it would be better is http://www.amazon.com/Dicapac-WP-ONE-Digital-Camera-Waterproof/dp/B005IAXVMG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1365875559&sr=8-1&keywords=dicapac+waterproof+case

Answer
The Nikon AW100 is one of the better underwater cameras. I'd keep it.

I never liked those baggies. They are OK for above water use - such as at the beach where the camera might get wet, but they are no good at all for snorkeling.

Also realize that there are two defacto standards for underwater compact cameras. Those that go to 3meters and those that go to 10meters like the Nikon. There are also some cameras that can exceed that depth rating a bit (like the Nikon AW110).

Thing is, depth ratings with compact cameras/housings/bags are for "static" (still) water for 1 hour. If you put the camera into a river, surf, or have an ocean current, there will be increased water pressure on the camera, which necessitates having a deeper rating.

This increased pressure may exceed the 3M rating of the lower end underwater cameras and bags, even if you do not go to their rated depth, and may result in damage. This is why I never recommend 3M rated cameras/bags for anything but above water use in wet areas - as I take a conservative approach to this.

Underwater housings are indeed designed for one camera, so if that camera becomes obsolete and you have to replace it with another model, the housing will be no good. However, housings are typically rated to 200m, so they are not usually needed unless you are going scuba.

Here is my take on the applicability of the various bags, cameras, and housings:

- Above water use in wet environments: bag or 3M rated camera.
- Snorkeling: 10M rated camera.
- Scuba: 200M rated housing.

Also realize that there is a color shift to the blue when you use a camera underwater. So to get a properly color balanced photo, you need to use a RED filter, or manually adjust the color balance of your camera. This can be tricky to do, and most (if not all) underwater cameras have an underwater color balance setting that will provide the correct color balance.

With some cameras, you may have to set the scene mode to underwater to use this mode, and other cameras may do this automatically.

The aquarium mode in your camera may set the blue-shift color balance correctly, but it might also only make the fishes look more vivid. But some of the older Canon cameras did have optional underwater housings available, so the aquarium mode may also work for underwater use. You might see if you can find an old Canon housing for your Canon.

I have an Olympus 8010 underwater camera which works well enough, but I would have bought the Nikon AW100 if it had been available when I bought mine.

Does Panasonic make a waterproof camera with a Leica lens? Any help with waterproof cameras appreciated!!?

activewoma

Hi. I love the outdoors and need a waterproof camera. A friend recommended a Panasonic with a Leica lens? I found this TS25.
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Panasonic+-+LUMIX+TS25+16.1-Megapixel+Digital+Camera/1306048635.p?skuId=1306048635&productCategoryId=pcmcat272500050032&id=mp1306048635&sellerId=34793627

However, I don't see that combination. Want nice, but not spend a fortune. I have found the following:

Best Buy, Nikon AW110 model, vast majority of on-line reviews are great. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/coolpix-aw110-16-0-megapixel-digital-camera/8190056.p?id=1218864968194&skuId=8190056&st=aw110%20nikon&cp=1&lp=1#tab=specifications

Best Buy price-matched Costco's price of $199.97, and threw in an 8 gb card and case for free to match Costco's accessories.

Here is one on sale for $122 that some friends really like:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/finepix-xp60-16-4-megapixel-digital-camera-with-float-strap/8714371.p?id=1218888211867&skuId=8714371&st=waterproof%20camera%20fuji&cp=1&lp=4

I have a gift card to get rid of at Best Buy, but would go elsewhere. Does the higher price model get you a lot more than the $122 one? Seems it should. The specs seem about the same... would appreciate comment... I don't know a lot, but have always heard the pros love Nikon...

Thank you so much. I am overwhelmed with all the choices, yet don't know what the features mean!

Happy Snowing in Michigan!!!!
I did some research and it looks like they make a ts5, which is a little expensive for me. So, it may be between the two above... I would appreciate any advice...
i HAVE to keep it in budget -- under $250 to 300

Answer
Of that selection the Nikon AW110 would be best.
Are you getting this for snorkeling or for snowsports? If it is for the snow there are better cameras for similar money like the Canon SX280 HS. Just keep it in a good belt pouch, and it will be fine.

is there such thing as a waterproof camera case?

ily

like one that i can trust to put my digital camera underwater and take pictures?

Answer
Most digital camera have their own or recommends a third party underwater case. Depending on the make, model, size of your digital camera and depth you are going down to, my suggestion is to first go to the manufacturer's website and check out the accessories. Otherwise, you can select either a solid, hard underwater camera casing or a soft zip-lock type version. Of course, the hard body/cases are more expensive than the zip-lock versions.

If you are only going to water parks and or vacationing and going to pools and about 10 feet deep, I suggest the zip-lock versions by DryPak, DiCaPac or AquaPac or any similar manufacturer. For scuba diving, I suggest hard bodies which also works for more expensive DSLR cameras. Please take note that water pressure (depth you go down to) also needs to be factored in. Most camera's shutter release button will react to water pressure in a given depth.

Good luck and I hope this helps.

For a beginner's camera, the PowerShot A590IS offers amazing image quality and superb stabilization.
Alexa Wriggins
Tuesday, August 19, 2008 02:30 PM PDT

My digital camera expertise begins and ends with this fact: I cannot resist the urge to photograph a couple of fuzzballs named Chuckie and Violet. I'm a classic novice point-and-shooter, and the crème de la crème of my snapshots find their way onto Flickr or Facebook.

Recently, I spent some time with the 8-megapixel Canon PowerShot A590IS digital camera to see how fully it would meet my list of very basic snapshooting requirements and how well it would compensate fro my lack of technical proficiency. For a bargain-bin price of $150, it has a lot of features: 8-megapixel resolution, 4X optical zoom, optical image stabilization, face detection (which recognizes faces in the frame and optimizes the autofocus accordingly) and a smaller-but-serviceable 2.5-inch LCD screen. And conveniently it runs on two AA batteries.

To orient myself to the camera and gain insight into its features and functions, I ripped the A590IS out of the box and started taking pictures. I had no trouble working my way through various settings, quickly finding and using many of the 19 shooting modes, including portrait, landscape, and auto. Not surprisingly, the A590IS doesn't support a full range of manual settings (what do you expect for $150?), but it does let you program the shutter speed and aperture settings manually if you want to.

The big news with this point-and-shoot camera is image quality. Despite its rock-bottom price, the A590IS scored significantly higher in our image-quality assessments than point-and-shoots that cost more than twice as much and have higher megapixel counts. In particular, our judges noted superior colors and flash exposures in our subjective tests.

Image quality gets an assist from my favorite A590IS feature: the optical image stabilizer. I tried desperately to take a blurry picture--and I failed. No matter how hard I shook that camera or how much my subjects shimmied, I couldn't induce a blurry image. (Unfortunately for me, the A590IS does permit photo subject guillotinage if the picture taker frames the shot badly enough.)

Like many other Canon cameras, the PowerShot A590IS has a classic, easy-to-hold ergonomic shape with a fat thumb/hand grip on the right side. Though it's comfortable to hold, the camera body lacks rubber or textured trim on the plastic surface of its hand grip, which makes the grip a bit slick. I also wished that the camera were smaller: It's a compact camera, but not exactly pocketable. You'll need to secure it in a small camera bag before stowing it in your purse or backpack, or you'll risk scratching it up.

Though the AA batteries are great for convenience, the A590IS produced only 248 shots running on a fresh pair. Many point-and-shoots can take more than 300 shots on a single charge.

Photos from the PowerShot A590IS will never be mistaken for digital SLR output, but this camera is a great choice for anyone seeking an inexpensive, easy-to-use point-and-shoot that produces high-quality images. And don't be afraid to put its optical image stabilization to the test.

Pentax WG-3 gps vs Canon D20 ,waterproof cameras ,which one to buy? Why ?

Jolan

I wanna shot video mostly

Answer
Waterproof cameras scare me because I hear FAR too often about leaks, even when they are brand new.

Apparently it is very easy to catch a tiny hair or some other object in one of the seals (e.g. the battery / memory card door), and that is enough to let water in.

I'd suggest buying extra warranty protection and trying it out pretty much right away if you intend to go swimming with it.

Unless you pay a LOT of money, your waterproof camera will be a little P&S, so don't expect miracles from it - the quality of most shots will be so-so at best.

I'd also suggest reading reviews..... all you have to do is use Google for that.

P.S. Feel free to use "please" or "thank you" when you ask for help .... good manners are such a lovely thing.

Best waterproof camera that runs on AA batteries?

hunter

I know i already asked what the best waterproof camera is but since im going to be doing the NOLS program there will be no electricity to charge it so whats the best of the best waterproof camera that runs on batteries? something under 1,000$

Answer
Most quality digital cameras don't run on AA batteries these days. Instead they run on camera specific lithium ion or lithium poly batteries which hold much more charge and energy, thus lasting longer. I would suggest just buying several batteries if you aren't going off for THAT long of a time. It is more practical and has more uses. What happens when the trip is over?

The other option would be to buy several waterproof disposable cameras.

Need a good cheap camera for video editing.. Help?

I want a very good camera for less than $350. I'm going to to some video editing and special effects. My current camera records to those small DVDs and the quality is pretty bad. I don't want that much noise in dark areas. 1080p.

I'm doing SERIOUS video editing as a teen, I have all the pro software like Vegas pro and all that's left is a better camera. Links and descriptions please?

A good framerate, smooth, and very good looking video would be nice. I know I can be asking to much for a low price, but hey, that's all I can go with.

Answer
The Hero camera is real popular, made by GoPro. You are going to spend 300 bucks for the HD model. They have plenty of videos on the website showing out clear the camera is. Plus it comes with a waterproof case, and mounts to nearly anything.

There are plenty of other brands, but GoPro has really set itself apart from the rest. Many tv shows on Discovery and similar networks now use GoPro to get the up-close, dirty, wet, high above (Iâve seen people mount them on their kites for kite boarding).

Is the fujifilm finepix xp55 a good waterproof camera?

Carla

I want a waterproof camera thats not too expensive and I found one at walmart for $170. Its called a fujifilm finepix xp55. my friends bought it and really likes it but I wanted to make sure it was a good one before I bought it.
I mainly want it for taking pictures in my pool, on water slides, in the snow, etc.
I read a couple of reviews that said it didnt take very good regular indoor pics but I'm not really planning on using it for that.

I want this one because I can get it locally and don't have to order it online, but if it's going to be a piece of crap, I'd be willing to spend the extra money for shipping and get a better one
(I don't plan on using it professionally, just for fun)

Any info about the camera would be greatly appreciated.

Answer
it should be a fun camera, and yes it is waterproof, at least for swimming pool use, don't take it deep sea diving. imho i prefer the Olympus equivalent camera models, but getting a local purchase at Walmart is a big plus for the Fuji.

Best Waterproof Digital Camera?

Daniel Wil

I'm having trouble finding the best waterproof digital camera. It seems like it either has high MP but low reliability in the water, or low MP but high reliability in the water.

So, does anyone have any suggestions? I'm looking for something that is at LEAST 12 MP, but also RELIABLE int he water. Any suggestions help.

Thank you! :)

Answer
What actually do you want :

- a camera for swimming?
- a camera for snorkeling?
- a camera for diving?

- they all require totally different sealing.
If you go to any depth you will require a flash - if you want macro you will need additional equipment
Do you want to use it for terrestrial photography or just dedicated for underwater? It may be worthwhile getting an underwater case for a terrestrial camera
If its only for the odd trip & you are diving it may be better to rent proper equipment

But its hard to recommend if we dont know what you are wanting to do

Underwater Camera Questions?

Nicole

I am going on a week-long trip to a tropical area and am planning on doing hikes, scuba diving, exploring, etc. I want to get a camera to bring along on the trip, especially one that has underwater capabilities for the scuba diving. I've heard good things about gopro and contour, but really know nothing about cameras. My budget is about $200 (willing to go a bit higher if necessary). Help!! I don't know what to look for, what are the benefits of different types, etc. Thanks for helping

Answer
The primary difference in underwater cameras, especially the low-cost compact cameras you are probably looking at is their depth rating.

If you are going scuba-deep, you need an underwater housing. Waterproof cameras are just not good enough to keep from leaking at scuba depths... especially considering their ratings are done in static water - and not in ocean currents.

When you are in dynamic water; ocean currents, raging surf, river, etc. this applies additional pressure on the camera, just as if you went deeper. A camera rated for 20 Meters might only survive in 10 Meters of water under those conditions.

There are no consumer-grade underwater cameras within your budget that has sufficient depth rating for scuba. Typically these cameras are rated for 10Meters or less in static water. Some are only rated for 3Meters. However there are a few that are rated for a bit more (the Nikon AW120 for instance is rated for 18Meters).

For your budget, the only possible solution is a POV camera such as a Sony Action Cam or one of the cheaper GoPro cameras. They include underwater housings as part of the base package. The housings are rated for significantly deeper conditions (the Sony Action Cam for instance is rated for 60Meters). POV cameras work well enough for video but are not too good for photos.

Otherwise, a 3rd party underwater housing for a regular camera would exceed your budget, and that doesn't include the cost of the camera.

Of course, if you are only going to scuba down to 10ft or so, you can get the Nikon AW100 refurbished for under $170. It is rated for 10Meters, and after reducing the depth to compensate for moving water, 10ft would be probably the max. depth you should go.

Here is a link to the refurbished Nikon AW100:

http://www.cameta.com/Nikon-Coolpix-AW100-Shock-Waterproof-GPS-Digital-Camera-Orange-Factory-Refurbished-65588.cfm

You are probably not going to get a 10Meter rated camera for less as most cameras in this price range are rated for 3Meters.

What camera should I get?

I'm looking for a point and shoot camera that I can use above and under water. I'm not completely sure to what depth under water but I would love to use it while scuba diving which I'm guessing would require a housing? High res is important.

Links would help immensely with any option(s) listed. Thanks!

I was recently looking at buying this camera...

I looks pretty solid and here is also a link to Amazon.com best sellers in underwater photography.

I hope I helped!
If you have anymore questions please let me know by adding to this question, or posting a new one. Thanks!

** The TX10 looks good. The full touch screen on the back could be interesting (not sure if that is a good thing or a bad one) and i can't find the specs for the zoom. Always look at that if your planing on taking pictures from 20+ feet away. Always look at optical zoom (digital zoom can get blurry). Mega Pixels are only important if you're planning on printing the picture any larger then your standard size. Both cameras look good, but I would still recommend the LIMUX!!

Most capable underwater cameras for astrophotography?

Alex

Are there any underwater cameras with Manual shooting modes and the ability to capture high-ISO long exposures (at least 30 sec shutter would be ideal)? I'm looking for a camera that I can take camping (involving kayaking, swimming, etc.) and also be able to capture decent astrophotography shots that are often available in camping areas, since they are away from light pollution.

I could always buy a waterproof case for my DSLR, but I try to pack light when camping and I wouldn't want the extra bulk of a DSLR + waterproof case. Also, DSLR housing cases are really expensive!

Any suggestions for a waterproof, high-performing compact camera?

Answer
No. Ruggedized cameras don't have the same capabilities you need. If you are only shooting at or near the surface, and not diving with it, you can get less expensive surf bags for your dSLR. EWA marine makes the best low cost units. I have not used them, but Outex (http://www.outex.com/) housings look really interesting.

If you want to go mirrorless, here is a good deal on a Olympus E-PM1 camera with a housing. You would need to add strobes if you want to dive with it, but it would be good for near surface work as is.

What cameras do you recommend for a beginner?

lia

I'm thinking about saving up to buy a nice camera, because I really like photography and I'm trying to get better at at. Right now I'm using a Finepix Z33WP, which is a pretty nice camera in my opinion. It also goes completely underwater which is a good feature. Here's my flickr, almost all the pictures on here I took with my Finepix: http://www.flickr.com/photos/liakachman/

I've been looking at Canons, like this one: http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=139&modelid=17316#BoxContentsAct
But it's awfully expensive. I'm only 15, so its hard to make money (and even harder to save it!) I'm not a complete beginner, I do know a bit about cameras.

So what cameras would you recommend that are really nice quality, but a reasonable price?
I'm not looking for criticism on my photography, I know it's not good. Thats why I said I'd like to get better, it's mainly something to do for fun. I'm just trying to find a hobby or something because I'm generally talent-less.

& Even though I don't have much money, I can always try to make some. I just want your opinion.

Also, I realize now it would have been easier to just search this, but hey, I was up until 5 in the morning & quite bored.

Answer
At least 10 - 30 times a day someone on YA asks: "Which one is a good camera to buy?"
A quick search would have given you hundreds of instant replies (without having to wait for answers), but once again here is my 10 cents on the subject:

I don't like to give recommendations for particular cameras because there are too many choices and too many variables in what people are looking for. I find it much more useful to help you think this over, then make up your own mind.

Point & Shoot cameras are wonderfully handy because of their small size.
When light conditions are ideal, they even take really nice photos - all of them do.

However, they all DO have limitations - they don't do very well in low light situations (i.e. noisy photos, hard to avoid blur, etc). The little onboard flash is very harsh at close range, and doesn't reach very far.
Many of them have no manual functions, so you are limited to only very basic photos, you can't compensate for unusual situations, or do many fun "tricks" and special effects.
P&S's also suffer from frustrating shutterlag and many of them chew through batteries rather quickly.

If you're ok with all those limitations, then go ahead and pick one, most of them (the same type and same price range) are rather similar. Personally I would pick either a Canon or a Nikon, and would certainly stay away from Kodak.

A higher end P&S will give you more manual options and better quality. Many of those even give you the option of adding a proper flash (which makes a big difference to your flash photos).

Don't worry too much about megapixels - all modern cameras have plenty enough, plus there is a limit to how many pixels you can squash into a tiny P&S sensor before you actually LOSE quality rather than gain it. 6 megapixels is about the upper limit for those little sensors.
Don't worry about digital zoom, in fact, don't EVER use it. It simply crops away pixels, i.e. destroys information. The only real zoom is optical.

Some people ask for a camera that "doesn't take blurry photos". Blur is the photographer's problem, NOT the camera's. Even the most expensive camera will take blurry photos if the person behind it doesn't know what they're doing.

Some words about special effect features such as color accent, or even just b/w or sepia:
About applying any sort of effect in camera: DON'T DO IT !
Imagine if you just happen to take the best photo you ever took - surely you would want to have it in all its glory, right?
Always set your camera to biggest size, best quality (and to color).
That way, you start with the best possible photo as your original.
Then you make a copy and edit it to your heart's content.
You have much better control over any editing on your computer, even something as simple as b&w will look MUCH better when it was processed properly instead of in camera.
You can do all sorts of things to it PLUS you get to keep your original.

Decide which features are important to you, and look for cameras that have that feature.
Then go compare a few models on www.dpreview.com .

The very best thing you can do for your success is to borrow some books and learn about photography. A bit of knowledge will make a much bigger difference to your photos than your choice of P&S camera can.

For what it's worth - if I was in the market for a P&S camera right now, my choice would be a Canon Powershot SX20 IS http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=144&modelid=19208

Good quality waterproof camera?

Kk

Im going on a mission trip to a childrens home in honduras, this is my second year and im wanting to get a good camera to get more pictures of my babies this year(: we go swimming in rivers and lagoons alot and i just worry carrying a regular didgital camera around in such a rough enviroment. I want a sturdy digital camera that still takes good quality pictures, not blurry an dull(: does anyone have any information or reccomendations?

Answer
Would you be open to considering a waterproof digital camcorder rather than a waterproof digital camera? Reason being, I actually just bought this Sanyo waterproof camcorder, http://www.digitalimaginghq.com/sanyo-vpcwh1bl-blue-hd-waterproof-flash-memory-digital-camcorder.html for a few trips that I have planned this summer. I've only used it a few times, but I have used it during a recent canoe trip and it took very great video, but also does allow you to take still shocks. It may be work considering since you mentioned you were looking for something, waterproof and durables, as it sure help up during our camping trip where we were in an out of the waters and our boats. Hope this suggestion helps!
