I'm needing a waterproof camera case for my canon camera. I'm only using it for jet skiing but just in case it falls in the water I want a case for it. I'm kind of afraid to buy one as I've heard of some of these leaking! Anyone know of a good quality case for under $40, if there is one? Thanks.

Answer
Here i found one (www.amazon.com/Dicapac-Waterproof-Digital-Powershot-SD990is/dp/B00192HQOQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1253128334&sr=1-1-fkmr2) for $30 I've read an article on it and looks pretty good, but i would also try Ebay

Answer
My waterproof camera cost about 125$. It was money well spent. I've had it for a year now and it's great and works wonderfully. You can buy a
camera WITH a case, like I did. You can find little kids underwater cameras for a lot cheaper but they don't work quite as well.

My brother can't seems to find a water camera in Singapore. If there is a water camera in singapore tell me where can I find and which brand?

Answer
I think there are several camera stores in Sim Lim Square. I don't know exactly who has what. When I visited Singapore in 2003 I got my film developed somewhere in there.

Probably some of the best waterproof digital cameras are the Panasonic TS4, Canon D20, or Olympus Tough TG-1 iHS.

I want a digital camera for outside/waterproof?

My birthday is in March and I am going to washington D.C. I want a new digital camera. One that is good for outside photos as well as inside. I was also looking at waterproof cameras but I don't think I want one, unless I can find a really nice one. My price range is like no more than $300. So I want high quality for less price. Please give me specific brands and styles if possible. Oh, and color doesn't matter to much.

Answer
I had seen some nice waterproof Panasonic cameras in Singapore recently but did not pay much attention to them. Later I came across this blog site where the user has given a detailed info. Instead of repeating probably its better I paste the link.

http://www.travelgearblog.com/archive/waterproof-digital-camera.html

You can do the analysis. For prices check here.

Im looking for an HD video camera that I can use to film snowboarding stuff. Id be willing to spend 200-400 dollars, and I was wondering what cameras offered good quality picture and solid features for this price range.

Answer
Are you looking for a regular video camera or POV?

If you're looking at POV's (Point of View) then there's basically three options. I've spent weeks upon weeks looking at and researching these three companies.
Contour - http://contour.com/products
GoPro - http://gopro.com/products/
Drift - http://driftinnovation.com/drift-hd-action-camera/

The top competitors from each company are the GoPro HD Hero 2, Contour +, and Drift HD. They're all pretty new so there won't be as many reviews as for their older models. I'll give you what I like and hate about each.
Gopro - Good - Waterproof, HD, Good video quality, Good stabilization, Lots of mounting accessories
Bad - Kinda bulky and not very sleek, video seems a bit saturated, menu is awful

Contour - Good - Sleek and small, HD, Good video quality, lots of features like GPS and bluetooth view finder that syncs with your smartphone (pretty cool).
Bad - Image stabilization isn't as good as the others, only water resistant (but you can buy a case)

Drift - Good - Sleek and small, HD, Good video quality, great menu, lcd playback/viewfinder on camera.
Bad- Only water resistant (you can buy a case), not as many mounting accessories as the others

what is the best camera to use for underwater?

I'm going to Galapagos, Amazons and camping in Florida in May so i need to know of a good camcorder or camera to take on my trip. I'm going to spend a lot of my time in the water and on land so i want something that would be good for both. Does not have to be spectacular quality but something reasonable. my budget is $500-650. I just don't want it to break while on my trip.

Answer
panasonic lumix ts2, it's tough and takes great pictures.
waterproof to10 meters (33 ft)
shockproof to 2 meters (6.6 ft)
dustproof
freezeproof
14 mp sensor
6x zoom
720p HD video
i have one and i love it! cost me $299 Canadian
if you wait until next month panasonic is coming out with the ts3
same as above but has gps
larger 12mp c-mos sensor
electronic compass
barometer
altimeter
3D picture capability
1080p HD video
waterproof to 12 meters (40 ft)

Well, I want a digital camera with...
1. Good quality
2. An affordable price from 100-300
3. A decent zoom
4. Has to be digital
5. Can shoot videos

PLEASE give me the links to where you buy it online, or the name and company:]

Answer
Easy answer! Olympus 1030SW. Does everything you want PLUS it is waterproof to 30 feet, shockproof to 6 feet, heat and cold tolerant, and withstands 220 lbs of direct force (I can stand on it holding 50 lbs). Up to 29 minutes of 30fps video. Put a silicon skin on it and you can go anywhere and shoot anything.......just wash it off when done!! I got mine at Abes of Maine, now they sell for about $285. Check OlympusUSA.com for specs. It is a great camera that I use as a backup for my pro gear.... Oly of course!!

Going to Hawaii and looking to buy some snorkel gear and an under water digital camera. Any advice?

d

I was reading about both snorkel gear and underwater cameras, and there are so many choose from. I was hoping for some real people advice. While your here... any advice on trips to Maui would be great too! Thanks (I WILL choose the best answer!)

Answer
You can buy a decent snorkel set from Sam's Club or Costco. Yes, we have both wholesale retailers on the island of Oahu. You can get snorkels, goggles and fins for around $50-$60 (as a set). There are also a lot of places that rent snorkels, but I wouldn't trust them. If you plan to buy snorkels, etc. here, I would suggest either wholesale retailer. We also have Sports Authority (overpriced) and a shop called McCully Bike & Sporting Good. Whatever you do ... avoid buying sporting goods in Waikiki. Waikiki is one large tourist trap. Venture a little further and you'll save a lot.

Also, if you are on the island of Oahu, try snorkeling at Hanauma Bay on the east side of the island. I don't know too much about digital cameras, but Kodak just came out with the Kodak Playsport Digital Camcorder and it has some pretty rave reviews. The other plus, it's only $150 + or - a few bucks, and it is waterproof up to 10 feet deep.

I don't know too much about Maui. It's sad, but we islanders don't always travel far. I heard they have a rope course where you can jet down the valley. Another touristy options...visiting Haleakala. Sorry I can't help much in this department.

It needs to be able to be something that won't break super easy. And one that can record video. Also if it is waterproof that would be good. It needs to be under $200 Any suggestions would be great, Thanks!

Answer
You will not find any good ones for $200.

As said previously, Nikon AW100 or Olympus Tough-820.

I have the Olympus Tough-8010 which is a predecessor to the 820 (the Nikon was not available when I bought mine), and it has worked pretty good.

There are some models under $200 such as the Olympus Tough-3000. However, they are not nearly built as well, and cannot go as deep waterproof wise.

Realize also that the waterproof rating is for calm - static water. If you dump your camera into a raging river, there will be more force against the camera, and a camera like the Tough-3000 which is rated only to 3 meters in depth may not be enough.

The 8010 had additional o-ring seals, which is why I went with that one. Also it has an all-metal case, and I think part of it might be magnesium, but I am not 100% sure. At any rate it is heavy (at least for a compact camera), and well built.

Also, Olympus has more than one camera with the same model number, so make sure it is the "Stylus Tough" series, as those are the waterproof and ruggedized ones.

first one is not HD its 480p. The second seems nice, thought its not a good quality one, theres a Sanyo Xacti waterproof HD 720p and a Sanyo Xacti VHP-ZH1 that also records 720p, the ZH1 is way cheaper! and comes in an awesome pack, if ur under 200 dollars, thats ur pick. I miself bought a Canon Vixia HF S20 which shoots in 1080p, Dual camera, 20x (i think) zoom, and i got it at 320 with my saved money (it costs 1,482 in amazon or Canon but i got it at a garage sale! and its VERY GOOD!) so i say thats a good camera, i was planing on getting the Xacti ZH1 but i got a better one and with like an 60% off (not acual discount)

What is the best lomography camera? (for an amateur)?

Mandee

I've been looking around for a good, well priced lomography camera, and I've found a few that I think might be good, but I have /no/ experience with film cameras, so I'm not sure which would be best.

The one's I've found are:
Diana Mini 35mm for $40 (film included)
Superheadz slim white angel 35mm (wide angle) for $20 (BQ: is there any difference in the colors of these cameras? Because only the "white angel" is $20, all the others are $30.)
Holga 135 BC 35mm $50
Diana F+ Medium Format 120 mm for $40
Holga 135BC Plastic 35mm Camera - "Black Corner" Version for $50

BQ: I live in Oregon, so would they be ruined if I used them in the rain?

I'll be grateful for any/all advice - thanks! :)

Answer
The answer may surprise you.

The prices are within the costs normally associated with plastic cameras with plastic lens elements

Which camera you choose really will have to do with the subjects you want to shoot.

And of course, you need to be aware that those cameras only have two lens apertures and one timed shutter plus bulb.

That is a very limiting number of options when you need to get the right exposure with a camera with no light meter

A few years ago, when the LOMO craze was just starting, there was only one camera type available. Yes it still had the two lens apertures and a single shutter speed, but with those two limitations, many artists, experienced with the fundamentals of photography were drawn to the LOMO for artistic reasons, not quality

With the original LOMO that used 120 film, they could get amazing vignetting. In addition, other flaws could pop up in the course of creating their art.

The film could become scratched on the the emulsion side, causing black streaks through the film or the scratch could occur on the base side of the film, causing white streaks through the film and if lucky, both sides of the film could be scratched. The camera being made of very inexpensive plastic would some times cause the back of the camera to allow light leaks which would cause fogging of the images.

When you added all this up, artists loved the fact that much of these flaws were intermittent and so it was a little like finding a prize in the Cracker Jack box, you just never knew what little surprises they would get each time the had the film processed.

Being the marketing people they are, Holga and Diana + started making variations on the theme. 35 mm adapters which produced images that were 35 mm edge to edge including the sprocket holes by 60 mm long, the width of a 120 negative. Fun, but hard to print. Now they sell a 35 mm version of the LOMO which produces the more conventional 36x24 mm image frame.

In the end, you still have a camera you paid $40 for and you have to have some level of photographic knowledge to use them successfully, doe to their limited exposure control

With this knowledge, you will better be able to pick the camera that best suites your photo artistic needs.

RAIN: NO camera unless it is one of the few P&S waterproof type, should ever be exposed to rain. Even though my dSLR is moisture resistant, I still use a RainSleeve to protect it and the lens from rain

What's a good, new brand, and water proof video camera under $200?

Joseph

I've got $200 and I'm trying to find a good camera for tornado chasing. So, I have a few questions:

#1. What's the BEST brand?
#2. What's the video camera called?
#3. How well does it do when wet (I really need a waterproof or water resistant)
#4. How much does it cost? (Has to be under $200)
#5. Where can I get it?
#6. Does it need an SD or SDHC card?

Answer
Kodak PlaySport is the camera you are looking for, it's priced $140 on Amazon (see the link below) and can record in Full HD 1080p! And of course, waterproof for your needs. It needs SDHC memory card. Buy it together as amazon suggests with additional battery and 16 GB card and you are still under $200. And reviews of the users are awesome...

I am stormchaser as well, but here in Europe, I have purchased this camera yesterday from amazon UK, can't wait to arrive :)

This is a really stupid question because I've been able to easily take black and white pictures with all of my other cameras, but I just bought the Olympus Stylus-550 waterproof camera and I cannot seem to find how to take black and white or sepia pictures in the manual or online. Please help me. :) Thanks!

Answer
Look it up in the manual. If you have already lost the manual, browse the camera's menu system. It should be somewhere within mode or scene or special effects selection.

If you can't find one, then here's an easy way. Take the picture normally, in color, transfer the image to a computer, use the computer's photo software to change it to sepia or black and white.

If you don't have a photo software, I recommend IrFanView. It is small, fast and free. Just make sure to download the plug-ins too so you'll have the sepia filter.

If you don't have a computer, your only option then is to bring your picture (file, memory card) to a digital photo shop and ask them to convert it there.

Answer
while it is possible to seal a mic jack to prevent water from entering the camera, no standard mic jack will prevent water from getting on the contacts. if you plan on ocean swimming, the salt water will short out the mic connection electrically. you will be best off to add your narration afterwards in the computer video editor, and use the built-in camera mic for "natural sound".

LAST QUESTION! If I can't get a waterproof camera or case, are there any ways to make my camera waterproof, or things to put it in? Thank you!

Answer
My waterproof camera cost about 125$. It was money well spent. I've had it for a year now and it's great and works wonderfully. You can buy a
camera WITH a case, like I did. You can find little kids underwater cameras for a lot cheaper but they don't work quite as well.

Can someone please tell me of a digital camera that is kid friendly?

tonye d

my son will be 3 in June and believe it or not is a great photographer with my Iphone. I need one that is not only kid friendly but waterproof, shockproof, and has rechargeable batteries. I have looked at the digital cameras for kids but all of the review seem to be not so good. Either it's because they only take regular batteries or the pictures come out fuzzy. So I decided to look for just a regular digital camera but since there are about 74375209874527 different ones I really need some suggestions or advice as to which would be best. I wish I could attach a picture that he has taken so you can see what I mean about his photography. I have had photographers on Facebook fall in love with pics he has taken. Please help!!

Answer
You can go with anything from a Lego camera :

http://www.amazon.com/Digital-Blue-LG10002-LEGO-Camera/dp/B002L6I9Z4

to a waterproof/drop proof ruggedized camera:

http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-COOLPIX-Digital-Camera-2-7-inch/dp/B0073HSJGU/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1367796289&sr=1-1&keywords=nikon+s30

Here is a video that should convince you about kid-proof cameras. Although it is made by Olympus, all of the ruggedized cameras have a similar toughness to them. This "kid-proof" video shows kids being rough with the cameras, throwing them into water, hammering on them, stomping them - everything kids seem to do...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c8OTMVm1MFI

And here is an inexpensive one from Olympus:

http://www.amazon.com/Olympus-TG-320-Series-Optical-Blue/dp/B006ZAHNHC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1367796639&sr=8-1&keywords=olympus+waterproof+camera

Panasonic HM-TA1
or
Kodak ZX1

May use will be for videoing while on holiday. I am currently favouring the Kodak model because it takes AA batteries so easy to switch out if run out of battery, but its only 720P unlike the other two which shoot in 1080P.

So which one would you recommend?
I do have a low budget of around $100 USD.

Answer
Check out Kodak Playsport Zx5 Video Camera
Shockproof, dustproof, and waterproof up to 10 ft
Full 1080p HD videos and 5 MP HD stills, with auto focus
Get sharper videos and less blur thanks to built-in digital image stabilization

What's the best digital camera to get?

Annoymous

I've had a Kodak easyshare 10mega pixels with a 3xoptical view for the last 4years and its worked fine with me .... it recently broke the screen doesn't work anymore. My mom offered to get me a new one before I go to college. Which digital camera is the best one to get? is there one thats also waterproof?

-Thank you!
Thank you everyone! i'm going to go with a canon! =] i just needed a little camera to go out with (parties and such)

Answer
The Fujifilm Finepix F200EXR. It goes for about $325 online, but it is rated THE BEST COMPACT DIGITAL CAMERA. It is a bit pricey, but it is the best quality compact digital camera there is.The Fujifilm FinePix F200EXR is a 12 megapixels point-and-shoot digital camera features Super CCD EXR sensor provides superior picture quality, enabling a â3-in-1â sensor combination of âFine Capture Technologyâ (High Resolution), âPixel Fusion Technologyâ (High Sensitivity & Low Noise), and âDual Capture Technologyâ (Wide Dynamic Range). The camera has 5x optical zoom lens (equivalent to 28 - 140mm on a 35mm camera), Face Detection 3.0, Newly Evolved - Film Simulation Mode and a 3.0-inch, Approx. 230,000 dots, TFT color LCD monitor.

If you are looking to spend less...

The Canon PowerShot A1100 IS. This camera goes for $179.99 to $199.99. It is rated the BEST cheap digital camera out there. The A1100 IS from Canon provides quite a few above-average features for a camera in its price range. First, with 12.1 megapixels of resolution, beginner photographers will be able to make prints as large as they want. Canon includes a 4X optical zoom lens and optical image stabilization technology with the A1100 IS, both of which are nice features in a sub-$200 camera. It also runs from two AA batteries, making it handy to replace batteries while away from home.

If you want to spend a little less, check out the Canon A480.

You can get waterproof cases for these cameras. But if not:

Here are waterproof cameras that I would reccomend:

1. Canon PowerShot D10
$330 street, 12.1MP; 3X optical zoom; waterproof to 33 feet.

2. Fujifilm Finepix Z33WP
$200 street, 10MP; 3X optical zoom; waterproof to 10 feet

3. Olympus Stylus Tough 8000
$400 street, 12MP; 3.6X optical zoom; waterproof to 33 feet

4. Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS1
$400 street, 12.1MP; 4.6X optical zoom; waterproof to 10 feet

5. Pentax Optio W60
$250 street, 10MP; 5X optical zoom; waterproof to 13 feet

This camera is for personal use. I will want to use it mostly for family pictures which I can reproduce on my computer and printer. I would appreciate some ideas from users.

Some of our best answerers always recommends the Fujifilm FinePix F20 camera as the best-for-less choice. I have to say that I like the sample images at Steve's site (below). If Morey000 or SpaceCowboy show up after me and make this recommendation, choose them as the best answer, because I'm just passing along their suggestion. I have no personal experience with this camera. I see it at B&H Photo (available through Yahoo! Shopping) for $150; $190 with a 1 GB Sandisk memory card.

My brother has the A540 and my mother-in-law has the A530 - on my recommendation - and neither one has stopped speaking to me yet.

Canon just introduced the A550, which has more pixels, but offers less user control. I'd be happy with the A540, but the A550 is probably also worth considering, especially since the A540 is now harder to find. I think it's been discontinued. The A550 costs $170 at B&H and, of course, you'll need a memory card.

Film and Air Travel?

underwater camera x ray image

Dorkus

So i'm bringing two underwater dispoable cameras with me on vacation this weekend. Just curious if I put those cameras in my check-in if the X-Rays will damage the undeveloped film?
~G

Answer
The Xray scanners for the checked in luggage are more powerful, and you stand a good chance of the film being written off.

You never, ever want to pack anything of value in your check in luggage anyway.

Put it in your carry on. You can also request a hand check of your carry on if you wish.

This oil leak could become a mass extinction, even of humans?

John Locke

WARNING: DEPRESSING Not to scare anyone, but from someone familiar with spills like DH, including the magnesium blocks and risers, this is the way I see it. First, the problem started when an axial drill bit system was moved while the seal was in a ''closed'' position. This damaged the rubber seal and pieces of that seal came to the top in the mud used for drilling. When the engineers saw that, the tested the blowout preventer with a pressure test. OK, no problem, but the test they used was based on a 1960's patent using an algorithm that never though humans could drill 5,000 feet underwater. Took 8 hours for pressures to equalize, BP rushed everything, and the top blew off. Whooops.

They go out where the ocean is about 5,000 feet deep and drill another 18,000 feet into the crust of the earth. This it right on the edge of what human technology can do. Well, this time they hit a pocket of oil at such high pressure that it shot up through several seals and barriers before exploding, causing the rig to sink. Take a moment to grasp the import of that. The pressure behind this oil is so high that it destroyed the maximum effort of human science to contain it. Pressure estimates are 15,000 psi for the BOP and 21 inch riser. Some speculate the pressure in the area where they dilled (Mississippi Block 252 aka Macondo Prospect) could be a multiple of 10x, incredible pressure that can move about anything on earth. This is a HUGE deposit, Natural Gas and Oil is leaking out of the deposit as far inland as Central Alabama and way over into Florida and even over to Louisiana almost as far as Texas. If things break apart, it could be like the Yellowstone Caldera, except from below a mile of sea, with a 1/4-mile opening, with up to 150,000 psi of oil and natural gas behind it.

That would be an extinction event.

A junk shot or similar mud/heavy cement measure might bust open additional weaknesses they don't know about (or blow the thing wide open), hence their attempt to x-ray the remaining visible pipe before attempting the next "guess." Even the "relief" well is not a sure thing, that's why BP is drilling TWO reliefs in case the 1st doesn't work. Some countries require 4 relief wells.

Matthew Simmons told Dylan Ratigan that "there's another leak, much bigger, 5 to 6 miles away" from the leaking riser and blowout preventer which we've all been watching on the underwater cameras. Was this bigger leak caused by destruction of the well casing, or caused by some opening of a larger natural "fracture" oil seep? This might explain the strange red plumes of oil a few hundred feet under the surface.

For the relief well to succeed, the bore hole must precisely intersect the damaged well. If it misses, BP will have to back up its drill, plug the hole it just created, and try again.

If we can't cap that hole that oil is going to destroy the oceans of the world. It only takes one quart of motor oil to make 250,000 gallons of ocean water toxic to wildlife. Not toxic to whales, but the smaller organisms that begin the food chain. Are you starting to get the magnitude of this?

Imagine what happens if that oil keeps flowing until it destroys all life in the oceans of this planet. Who knows how big of a reservoir of oil is down there.

Not to mention that the oceans are critical to maintaining the proper oxygen level in the atmosphere for human life.

The only piece of human technology that might address this is a small nuclear bomb. I'm not kidding. Google "russian nuke oil spill" I pray the 1st relief well works in August! By then the Gulf will be black, but hopefully the east coast can be saved. If they put a nuke down there in the right spot it might seal up the hole. However, the nukes worked to seal the oil channel from a LAND rig, it's never been tried under 5000 ft of pressure on a sandy bottom, but still, nothing short of that will work!!!

What is a good waterproof video camera under $400-$450?

waterproof cameras video image

Rebecca

I want a good HD waterproof video camera under 400 bucks, but don't have much experience with buying them, so I don't know what's good. I saw the sanyo cameras, and some looked pretty good. Any suggestions?
The main thing I was thinking about is I want to take it out on a boat, without worrying that water would get in it or if I (I hope not . . .) fall out of the boat or something :P

Answer
It depends on what you mean by "waterproof"? what are you going to be using it for and at what depths?

To me any camera that is 'waterproof' to less than 10m is pretty much non waterproof. The reason is that the depths given are static depths, just placed in the water, if you knock them then you can easily exceed the tolerances given and flood the camera.

Most dive camera/housings are rated to between 20m and 100m, some even deeper. You can get a housing for most main manufacturer made cameras.

Quick Full working way to make a waterproof camera holder?

<3Sammie<3

i wanna make a video under water in the pool. any ways to make a good waterproof camera cast with house hold items?

Answer
water and electronics don't mix. the slightest amount of moisture in your camera could destroy it. underwater camera cases is the job for professional gear. If you insist on home made, test it out first with a dummy camera.

you can make a camera splash resistant or rain resistant by putting it in a gallon plasic food storage bag. this does not work for underwater submersion though.

Fuji FinePix J150W Underwater Housing?

underwater camera 60 ft image

philliesje

Can anyone tell me if there is an Underwater Housing out there that will fit a Fuji FinePix J150W and is rated for at least 60 feet in depth?

Answer
If there is, you would pay more for it than this one here, case AND a 5Mp camera.. for under $60 bucks..

http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?InvtId=DC-WPCST531TBLK-VP-R&cm_mmc=GoogleProducts-_-DigitalCameras-_-5MegapixelCameras-_-DC-WPCST531TBLK-VP-R&zmam=2003677&zmas=15&zmac=159&zmap=DC-WPCST531TBLK-VP-R

Yes, it's a long link, but for under $60.00 and down to 50 ft, it can't be beat.

I bought mine at Wal-Greens last summer, paid $89.00 then. It has only been in my pool and hot tub, but boy oh boy, it works and man, can you capture good black mail evidence with it under water.. LOL

Have fun and dress accordingly

What Under water camera do you think??

Denise L

I will be going on my first scuba diving trip, i am very excited, and i want to be able to snap great pictures of everything and anything, and have decently clear pictures,
We will be going down no more then 25 ft a little under 1 atmosphere,
What camera under $50-$60 with a flash that will enhance colors, be best for this trip, we will be diving off the island of Freeport, Bahamas at around 8am to 1pm.. so the water will be fairly clear.. i have done some research online and just dont know what it is i should look for in a camera and what would be best at that depth.
Please Help..!!
Thank you in Advance :)

p.s.. $50 to $60 is what i want to spend, but i do not want to really go more then $100, it is not a camera i will use more then 2 or 3 times..

Answer
Honestly for that price you're looking at either renting something (if even available for that) or getting disposable camera's.

If you happen to have an Olympus digital, then you may find Oly makes an underwater case for them.

Alternatively you can try a generic underwater bag for any camera but I don't know if they're rated for 1 atm.
