What should I be looking for in a digital camera?

waterproof digital camera with 10x optical zoom on ... ZD710 Digital Camera, 7.1 Megapixel, 10x Optical + 5x Digital Zoom

xxo.nicole

I am looking to buy a digital camera. I am willing to spend around $300-$350. I have to research before I can spend that much so I know exactly what I am buying.

Some of the things I know I should look for are:
- Megapixel (the more the better??)
- Optical or digital zoom
- Screen size.. or type ?

And.. thats it. And I know there is ALOT more that I should be considering.

Answer
Before purchasing a digital camera, ask yourself this: what sort of pictures will you be taking?
- For regular 4" by 6" photos, 5-6 megapixels (MP) is sufficient, but more MP will let you crop photos without loss of detail, as well as do larger-sized prints with superb image quality.
- Long range photos, or regular-range photos? The difference here is the camera's zoom. Optical zoom is "real-world" zoom using the camera's lense, whereas digital zoom is "artificial" zoom using the camera's internal processor to magnify an image at the cost of image resolution. Optical zoom is much, much better for quality pictures. The concern: Regular zoom cameras (usually 3x optical zoom) are more compact and easy to carry, whereas high zoom cameras (usually 10x optical zoom and up) usually have a large lens, making them bulky and less suitable for candid or everyday use.
- Where will you use the camera? Again, physical size is a concern if you want to carry a camera with you all the time. Ultra-slim cameras exist and are quite powerful. Additionally, waterproof and "tough" cameras exist for shooting under any circumstance.
- Last, depending on your photography skills, do you want a simple "point-and-click" camera, or will you be using manual focus, changing the ISO often, etc? Generally, cameras with lower prices have very few adjustable settings, but this can be great if you aren't going to worry about all of that.

Regarding screen size: most of today's cameras have an LCD screen which is at least 2 to 2.5 inches in size, which is enough to clearly see pictures you take and easily review them if necessary.

Finally, one essential accessory is the Memory card. This card is like "film", in that is is required to store pictures on your camera. Cards vary in price, and since different cameras require different cards, I suggest first finding a camera you like, and then considering an appropriate card. (Or, ask about digital camera memory at a later date.)

I want a digital camera that takes pics with sharp detail?

Jess

I am looking into buying a small digital camera that takes pictures with sharp detail, zoom doesn't matter really as much. Looking to spend under $400 US if at all possible. I want one that will fit into a purse or pocket, no permanently protruding lenses. Waterproof a plus but by no means a requirement. Any recommendations?

Answer
I would suggest Sony Cybershot DSCW300 13.6MP with 3x Optical Zoom with Super Steady Shot

I have a Kodak Easy Shot and I take it every where! It is amazing how many times in a day I find a reason to take a photo of something interesting! I am doing about 400-600 photos a month. Some amazing sunrises and sunsets, buildings, people, etc, etc. I download the images to cd's once a month. One day when I retire I will be able to look back to all those memories!!

Answer
I do it too... no matter if my point-and-shoot is not too compact.

I have a bag with my PowerShot A640, a WP-DC8 waterproof case, a lens adapter, UV and circular polarizer 58mm filters, 8 AA rechargerable batteries and a recharger, two 1Gb SD memory cards, a small waterproof bag.

It isn't a small bag, but I take it every where!
I toke more than 300 pictures in a day when traveling!

It makes me able to take pictures like these:

I know it's supposed to have 15 different settings, but I can't find them. I have it on the setting below auto, pressed the function/set button and found the program, portrait, night snapshot, kids & pets, indoors, and face self-timer, but nothing else. How do I find the others that it's supposed to have (beach, underwater, etc.)?

Answer
If you're trying to find the extra Scene modes (called Special Scenes) such as beach, foliage, snow and fireworks, etc...then why don't you simply look up...beach, foliage or snow etc...in the Index at the back of your User Guide??? They are there.
And they will direct you to the appropriate page and show you how to select them.

If you don't have your User Guide, you can download it here...
http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/support/consumer/digital_cameras/powershot_sd_series/powershot_sd1300_is#BrochuresAndManuals

P.S. using the Underwater Special Scene doesn't mean you can automatically shoot underwater. You first NEED to buy a special waterproof casing (WP-DC36) to protect your camera so you can shoot underwater...lol...they cost approx. $175 from Amazon.

best digital camera for pictures of kids?

heyyy ther

What the best camera on the market these days? Don't much care about price, well maybe like 500-600 or less. I know I should go with dslr, but i need something i can have with me at all times so i need something compact. so whats the best out there for mostly taking pictures of an active 3yr old and active puppies?? Wouldn't mind having something waterproof
also, in general what should i be looking for like megapixel wise and what not?

Answer
The smaller cameras are generally limited by the fact that they can't really take pictures of anything that won't sit still. When you are taking pictures of active 3 year olds and active puppies, having them sit still is nothing short of a miracle.

Waterproofness is more of a gimic in my book, so i consider it here.

The best one on the market in my opinion is the Canon s95. <------------
It is small compact.
has the largest sensor available for that size.
Has a very fast aperture of f/2.0 (in cameras, faster apertures let in more light, lower number the faster)
Deals reasonablly well in low light too.

Other than that, Other chocies would includef
Canon 550d + 50mm f/1.8
or
Olympus PEN - some kind of fast lens.
You would choose these cameras because they have a faster aperture (f/1.8) and a larger sensor.

Like the other person said, the iphone 4 is a great camera to have with you all day long, especially with it's new integrated technology that improves low light pictures. That being said, the iphone or any smaller camera is sitll limited by the fact that the subject, kids, dogs need to sit still for the picture to be taken.

Dont' worry about megapixels. You only need megapixles if you are going to blow up the picture and put it into a huge frame like 20inches x 30inches. 5 is more than enough to enlarge the picture to 8x11 already.
The things i consider are important include
- fast aperture (2.8 is standard around point and shoots, 2.0 is faster <-- Canon s95)
- larger sensor
- and i don't worry about zoom. when taking pictures of kids, i'm usually right next to them.

Which waders should I buy for fly fishing?

dang

I need to buy a light-weight breatheable pair of waders for fly fishing. Any suggestions? Any that I should stay away from?

Answer
I buy my waders from Cabela's.

They carry a Cabela's brand, selling breathable waders for as low as $59 to $240.

Remember the old saying, you get what you pay for.

I really like the Guide Tech Dry Plus breathable waders, those sell for around $190. A quote from Cabela's, " Body material is waterproof, breathable and highly puncture resistant, thanks to the five-layer Dry-Plus® technology in key stress areas, including the lower legs and seat. The rest of the body is built with four-layer Dry-Plus material for increased breathability. Try a pair, and we think you'll agree Guide Tech waders represent the ultimate in high-performance fishing waders."

The built in chest pack is a great place for my digital camera and other items.
The stocking foot wader feels a whole lot better than the usual feet found in waders. A quote from Cabela's: "Stockingfoot Waders have neoprene feet ergonomically designed to fit your right and left foot better and feature durable, high-density soles for a longer life."

They also sell waders made by: Simms, & Chota & Columbia & Hodgman & William Joseph.

Check out their whole line at:

What is the best telephoto Lens to use for family pictures at the beach using a canon rebel?

best waterproof camera kids image

Kristina

I am a beginner photographer. Going on vacation want to be able to capture good candid pictures of the kids and family (10 people). What would be the best telephoto lens? I have a macro lens and that's all. I don't think that will capture a good normal pic. Any suggestions? I have a canon EOS Rebel

Answer
Your macro should also function as a "normal" lens, but you don't mention its size.

As far as the zoom lens, my favorite is the 70-200 f/2.8L (a monopod can come in handy though, with this lens on my camera everything weighs in around 6 pounds).

One piece of advice....BEWARE OF THE SAND!!!! Sand and cameras do not make good friends. When dealing with that situation, I keep my equipment in a waterproof hard case (for the good seal), along with a "rocket" blower and other cleaning material. I also try to keep the camera at least 3' above the sand (call me paranoid).

What are some fun crazy things to put on a beach scavenger hunt list?

skyistheli

I want some things that are going to be fun and entertaining to do on the beach. I'm 16 by the way. There are also going to be kids there, so they have to be appropriate.

Answer
Buy some regular sacks of skittles (like 5) and bury them partly in the sand, with one of the corners sticking out of the sand.
(you can put sticky notes on the skittles bags and write down a clue. of that's what kind of scavenger hunt it is. )
You can also secretly get a kid to join in a secret thing with you, and you can bury most of him in the sand, but he can burst out of the sand- next to the first given item.
You can make up a sound que like a cough and whistle.
It scares the piss out of the victim and makes it more Fun.
try burying cheap pool toys/beach toys (still in the packaging-but bring scissors so they can use them after!) in the sand with another corner out, like the skittles.

Here are some more things to put in the sand/in places-

Beach ball
squirt gun ( fill it up for instant crossfires)
lollipops (individual packaged)
5 dollar bill wrapped around it self. ( remember to map them, you don't want to leave those there! D: )
gag peanut butter/candy jar( with the worms that shoot out )
5 dollar sandals.
a paper card with a coupon on it. (one free hug from any scavenger/ one hint/ activity choice/etc. )
cheap waterproof disposable cameras.(for whoever is out of state, or just loves to snippity snap funny things)
GRAND PRIZE OPTIONS :DDD
20 dollar bill wrapped around itself/in a fake chest
Sack of candy
A set of foam footballs/ whiffleball set/ bachii ball set / other game set for everyone.

Melody

I'm looking for a new (compact) digital camera with a durable metal body. I currently have a little Nikon with an aluminum body but, it's about 7 years old & needs to be updated.
It seems that there aren't very many little cameras on the market with metal bodies now.

Answer
there are quite a few cameras with metal bodies. i have a Ricoh CX-1 for example with an aluminum case.
However, if you drop it, having an aluminum body won't help if the lens is messed up.
Olympus has a line of tough cameras for example.
the lens is in a periscope design and so it does not protrude from the camera and it helps making it dust and even waterproof.
As others have written, plastics have improved and can be very tough now.

What is the average longevity of a good Digital Compact Camera (if maintained properly) ?

shankd67

How many years can I expect to see a digital point & shoot camera (esp. from a popular brand viz. Canon, Olympus or Nikon) ....working, if I operate & maintain it in a proper manner ?
My maintenance of any thing is quite good. I am from India and its a tropical country.

Answer
The key to maintaining anything is proper care. I keep my gear clean, properly cased, always use a neck/wrist strap, and try to protect them in inclement weather.

For example, I have:

1) a Canon SD870 IS (a P&S) that is 4+ years old, and it looks and works like brand new. I expect another 10 years at least.

Other older cameras:
2) a Canon Sureshot WP-1 (waterproof 35mm P&S) that is 16 years old
3) a D30 (DSLR) that is going on 12 years old, and still sees frequent use (I'm using it to teach my wife photography and use it for boudoir sessions)
4) Several (7) 35mm film cameras from the 60s & 70s that work great
5) a Bronica C that is (uhhh...counts on fingers and toes several times) about 46 years old

By keeping them clean, getting CLA maintenance (Cleaning/Lubrication/timing Adjustment) done on them, and giving them normal use... they all work like they were designed to

what is the best underwater digital camera?

im going on a holiday to the bahamas and would love a camera for underwater picture taking, what camera would be the best? i am looking at a 100 to 300 pounds kind of budget :)

thanks

Answer
I would suggest a few that I think are very good. Olympus Tough 8010, Panasonic Lumix TS2 and Sony Cyber-shot TX5. Think that Panasonic is the most expensive from these three.
What you need to consider is how waterproof these cameras are. For example, Sony TX5 is waterproof to 10 ft, when Panasonic TS2 and Olympus Rough 8010 are both waterproof to 33ft. And Sony TX5 has got the lowest resolution from these three. It's just 10.2 megapixels. Panasonic and Olympus have a resolution of 14MP, which is quite a great difference.
Sony and Olympus offer a great feature of panoramic images. your images are automatically stitched together, which gives you the extra-wide view of the scenery.
All cameras are shock-, dust-, sand- and freeze-proof. But Olympus 8010 is also a crushproof, that is designed to withstand up to 220 pounds (100 kg).
Sony launching new waterproof camera which will be up for sale in March/April and it will have a resolution of impressing 16.2 megapixels. And it is going to be the first waterproof camera that can capture 3D still images. But probably pricey too.
There are also Fujifilm waterproof cameras, quite reasonably priced, but that wouldn't be my personal choice.

What kind of video camera should i get for around $150?

I've always thought it was a really cool idea, and lately I've been looking into getting one. I've looked at some from Canon and Olympus. I'm leaning towards Canon's D10 because it gets good reviews, is slightly cheaper than Olympus models, and because I really like Canon cameras.
Anyone that owns this camera or another waterproof camera-
Is it good price considering that it would only get moderate use?
Do you recommend this camera, or another one?
Would I be better off getting a waterproof case for my current camera (a Canon powershot a570)?

Thanks so much!

Answer
Here are 5 top rated waterproof cameras:

1. Canon PowerShot D10

$330, 12.1MP; 3X optical zoom; waterproof to 33 feet
Canonâs first foray into waterproof digital compacts looks like a cross between a Digital ELPH and a diving bell. With a waterproof rating down to 33 feet, itâs among the deepest divers in this category, but its 2.5-inch LCD and optically stabilized 35â105mm (equivalent) f/2.8â4.9 zoom lens arenât at the front of this pack. Like the other cameras here, the D10 is freeze- and shockproof, in this case surviving temperatures down to 14 degrees Fahrenheit and falls of up to 4 feet.

2. Fujifilm Finepix Z33WP

$200, 10MP; 3X optical zoom; waterproof to 10 feet
Borrowing design cues from Fujiâs teen-targeted Z30, this underwater shooter is one of the tiniest and most stylish, as well as the most affordable. Its 2.7-inch LCD is as large as they come on this type of compact. But itâs waterproof only to 10 feet, and its 10MP and 35â105mm (equivalent) f/3.7â4.2 optical zoom arenât groundbreaking.

3. Olympus Stylus Tough 8000

$400, 12MP; 3.6X optical zoom; waterproof to 33 feet
Olympus offers some of the most rugged compact cameras you can get, and its latest fits the mold. You can shoot down to 33 feet underwater, drop the camera from up to 6.6 feet, and use it in temperatures down to 14 degrees Fahrenheit. Plus, its metal construction can withstand up to 220 pounds of pressure. Sensorshift image stabilization combats hand shake, and the zoom, while not league-leading, spans an equivalent 28â102mm f/3.5â5.1.

4. Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS1

$400, 12.1MP; 4.6X optical zoom; waterproof to 10 feet
Panasonic has stepped up to the pool in a strong way with its first waterproof digital camera. Its optically stabilized 28â128mm (equivalent) f/3.3â5.9 zoom offers a nice balance of wide angle for underwater and midrange tele for land-based adventures. At 12.1MP, it affords plenty of resolution, and it has an ample 2.7-inch LCD. While we wish it could go deeper than 10 feet, its 720p video recording should make playing in the backyard pool more fun than ever.

5. Pentax Optio W60

$250, 10MP; 5X optical zoom; waterproof to 13 feet
Pentax was one of the first to offer dunkable digital cameras with its WP series years ago, and now itâs a major force. This model has plenty of room to the left of the lens to hold onto, and we like the 720p video recording, though weâd rather have a faster rate than its 15 frames per second. Its Super Macro mode should be a boon below the surface, letting you focus as close as 0.4 inches from the front of the 28â140mm (equivalent) f/3.5â5.5 lens.

Witch waterproof camera do you find better?

I would like to buy waterproof camera and I am in dilemma between PANASONIC LUMIX DMC-TS2 and OLYMPUS STYLUS TOUGH-8010. Please tell me which one do you find better and why.

Or you can suggest me something else. It is important to me that it is waterproof 10m, have wide angle, make quality videos and make great shots underwater...

Thanks!

Answer
These are main features difference :

Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS2 : 4.6x Optical zoom, Dustproof = Yes, Crushproof = No, Continuous Drive = 1.8 fps, Storage included = 40 MB Internal.

Olympus Stylus Tough 8010 : 5x Optical zoom, Dustproof = No, Crushproof = Yes, Continuous Drive = 5 fps, Storage included = 2 GB Internal.

For the spec Olympus Stylus Tough 8010 is better, but rating review/popular camera a Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS2 is better, The final is depend on you.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS2 : 14.1 MP Waterproof Digital Camera, 4.6x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom, 2.7-Inch LCD, Waterproof down to 10 meters, Shockproof (rated for drops up to 6 feet), Freezeproof, Dustproof, Record high-definition movie in AVCHD Lite, etc.

My husband and I are missionaries going to the Congo in Africa (jungle) for the next few years. I am looking for a water resistant, shock resistant camera (very humid environment). I need one that will focus on close ups of items without it blurring or making the objects further away in focus. My current camera is a standard digital camera but it does not focus on close objects and it is not water resistant. The camera will also need to be able to use a memory card so I can email pictures of my daughter back home to the states. Bonus points if it records videos as well.

Answer
I don't know why Jim A continues to tell people that there's no such thing as a shock resistant camera. Just search for "shockproof camera" on Amazon. There's dozens of them!

Try the Panasonic DMC-FT4 or DMC-TS4 as it's called in the USA. It's waterproof to 12 meters, shockproof for a 2 meter fall, freezeproof to -10 celcius and dustproof. It's got the macro closeup facility you want and uses standard SDHC memory cards. And it records full HD 1080p video. Even underwater!

Review here with a few other waterproof cameras: http://www.lenstip.com/134.5-article-Waterproof_cameras_test_2012_-_part_I_Panasonic_Lumix_DMC-FT4.html

I would advise buying and testing it well before you leave. The biggest recurring complaint I see with waterproof cameras is that they have quality control problems, meaning you don't always get a good waterproof one. It's not the easiest piece of equipment to make because the rubber waterproof seals are quite difficult to design install in a way that guarantees that water can't get in. Usually if they work then they do continue to work well for several years, but it's easy to end up with a duff one.

The problem with closeup macro work is that when you are very close to an object, your depth of field (the amount in focus) is not very great, so things behind the subject do tend to be out of focus. That's just part of the physics of photography.

You can compensate a bit by setting the camera into aperture-priority mode and setting a small aperture, but that in turn means using slower shutter speeds, so you are more likely to introduce blur through camera shake (unless you use a tripod) or through the object moving.

You can compensate for slow shutter speeds a bit by increasing the ISO setting, but that tends to add more "noise" to the image.

This balance of shutter speed, aperture size and ISO setting is at the core of all photography. To get a lot in focus with macro pictures you need a lot of light, a lens which stops down to very small apertures and which focuses close up and a good tripod. That's only really achievable with a Digital SLR camera with dedicated macro lens - and that isn't cheap.

Often the best macro shots are obtained by deliberately throwing everything completely out of focus except for the main object.

What is the difference between a cheap video camera and an expensive one?

Danny

Hello, what's the difference between a professional video camera that costs thousands and a video camera that is quite cheap?

Answer
Panasonic Lumix TS4 12.1 TOUGH Waterproof Digital Camera with 4.6x Optical Zoom (Black) enjoying the fact that when I am moving around trying to beguile a pic the camera steadies itself to shoot a bang-up picture. But I actually ca n't await to utilize it on our vacation this summer and sample out the waterproof features so I can strike pics of my family on rides and in the pool

DSLR water proof case vs buying a cheap waterproof camera for hawaii snorkeling ?

Mr M

Going to snorkel in Hawaii sometime soon, How reliable are waterproof cases for DSLRs such as the T3i? I am afraid of water sipping through and destroying my camera

Either that or I am going to buy a cheap waterproof built for diving point and shoot

Answer
A really good quality waterproof case for your camera is going to start in the $600 range and go up from there...yes, they really do work. The better ones will tell you depth restrictions and what features you will be able to manipulate while under water. If you want to go this route then check out camera stores like B&H Photo, Abe's out of NY(maybe not now??) to see ball park prices and get model numbers then shop around.

I would opt for the cheaper waterproof throw away unless you know for sure you are going to be doing a lot more underwater photography in the future. Are they water-proof or water-resistant? Big difference. There may also be depth restrictions as in the deeper you go the higher the pressures on the seals....
Good luck

I would like to buy waterproof camera and I am in dilemma between PANASONIC LUMIX DMC-TS2 and OLYMPUS STYLUS TOUGH-8010. Please tell me which one do you find better and why.

Or you can suggest me something else. It is important to me that it is waterproof 10m, have wide angle, make quality videos and make great shots underwater...

Going to Hawaii and looking to buy some snorkel gear and an under water digital camera. Any advice?

I was reading about both snorkel gear and underwater cameras, and there are so many choose from. I was hoping for some real people advice. While your here... any advice on trips to Maui would be great too! Thanks (I WILL choose the best answer!)

Answer
You can buy a decent snorkel set from Sam's Club or Costco. Yes, we have both wholesale retailers on the island of Oahu. You can get snorkels, goggles and fins for around $50-$60 (as a set). There are also a lot of places that rent snorkels, but I wouldn't trust them. If you plan to buy snorkels, etc. here, I would suggest either wholesale retailer. We also have Sports Authority (overpriced) and a shop called McCully Bike & Sporting Good. Whatever you do ... avoid buying sporting goods in Waikiki. Waikiki is one large tourist trap. Venture a little further and you'll save a lot.

Also, if you are on the island of Oahu, try snorkeling at Hanauma Bay on the east side of the island. I don't know too much about digital cameras, but Kodak just came out with the Kodak Playsport Digital Camcorder and it has some pretty rave reviews. The other plus, it's only $150 + or - a few bucks, and it is waterproof up to 10 feet deep.

I don't know too much about Maui. It's sad, but we islanders don't always travel far. I heard they have a rope course where you can jet down the valley. Another touristy options...visiting Haleakala. Sorry I can't help much in this department.

Which underwater camera is the best?

Q. I'm really looking into getting an underwater camera.
I want one that is not very expensive, but great quality.
I have narrowed my options to two choices ...

1.) fujifilm finepix xp10
2.) fujifilm finepix z33wp.

for those of you who are camera 'experts',
can you PLEASE help me out.

what is a good valued underwater camera?!

I appreciate your answers,

Dee Byrd.

Digi Dali

Camera underwater bag, underwater case or underwater camera (clearly the underwater camera is not as good as conventional camera as for functionality or available lenses)?
I want to fully utilize my Canon EF L series lenses for underwater shoot.

Answer
What quality do you want?

Cheap underwater cameras will probably have poorer image quality - light falls off rapidly underwater & cheap cameras crank the ISO up leading to a lot of noise.

What camera have you got at the moment? Is there a rigid case for it? A Ewa Marine flexible pouch will be ok at those sort of depths, and will be cheaper than a rigid case. A rigid case will give you more options if you haven't enough light & want to add a separate strobe.

It all depends on budget & how often you're going to use it to justify the money spent.

If you buy a rigid or flexible housing, do try it our first WITHOUT the camera - check for leaks around the seals. Make sure that the seals are sand/grit/hair free or you'll get leaks. O rings in rigid housings need a touch of silicone grease too.

Edit: If you are planning to do a lot of this & want to use your Canon lenses then you will need a DSLR housing - but they're not cheap and they may not even be one made for your camera body.
I had a housing for my D300 & it cost £2000 - that's housing ONLY. Ports (which are lens dependent) are extra & cost around £250-£500, and strobes will cost around £1000.

I have a waterproof bag for my Verizon Droid Incredible (I have included a link below). It says its waterproof up to 100 ft. If I take my phone scuba diving with me in that bag I'm sure the phone will stay dry however will the pressure of the water outside the bag cause damage to the phone? In case your wondering, I want to use the Camera functions of the phone not make calls under water. I also don't exptect to dive below 60ft (I have already email the company, surprise.... they did not know.)

http://www.thepocketsolution.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=PS&Product_Code=PSI-63311&Category_Code=verizon_droid_incredible_accessories

Answer
It may not get wet nor damaged but the air in the bag will compress. It'll probably cause that bag to activate all sorts of buttons on the phone during that compression as the bag contacts the phone. Some all at once. This commonly happens with cameras in those bags.
Your call here. Personally I wouldn't since the results will be unpredictable. You can rent a camera from the charter or dive outfit you're going with that will handle 60 feet for dirt cheap. You won't also have a bag distorting your images. You only get one shot at this so why waste time, effort and money that may get you nada. Be a diver and do it right first time.

Outdoor gear to take to Patagonia?

top waterproof cameras under 200 image

Mr. Shar P

Hi guys,

I'm heading to Patagonia next month or a trip. Going to the south of it and there will be a lot of hiking. The last time I did any hiking I was in the Marines ten years ago.

I want to take really good gear. What do you guys recommend to take?

What type of backpack?
What type of clothes/Jacket/Pants?
What type of shoes?
What other things that are handy when hiking in this type of places?

I have very little experience hiking so I don't know what things are a MUST to have. If you guys can give me some advice I will greatly appreciate.

I have about $1,000 budget to spend on gear. Thanks.

Answer
If you're doing a lot of hiking, especially if you have a backpack, you need some well-fitting, quality hiking boots that offer cushioning and support. Go to an outdoor store in your area and have a worker who knows what their doing help you find well-fitting hiking boots. You can probably get away with a good pair for under $150 but between $150-$200 would give you a good pair of boots. Waterproof boots are definitely worth it and Keen makes some affordable boots. Before you spend hours hiking in them, break them in so you don't get blisters or painful feet.
I assume you're accomodation is indoor otherwise you'll need some warm gear-sleeping bags, jackets, boots, socks, hats that would bring you over $1000. If this is the case see what you can borrow from people you know.
A daypack is always nice to have while hiking so you have a place to put extra layers, snacks, camera etc. If you can get one with a water pack in it, that's a bonus but not necessary at all.
Get a good, waterproof and windproof jacket and one or too fleeces. Also, hiking pants are good, especially the ones that can turn into shorts. For rainy days, waterprrof rain pants are nice to put over top of your hiking pants to keep you dry.
Hiking socks are good to have, I would get a few pairs, preferably wool or part wool.
if its wet, (I've never been to Patagonia, really try to wear no cotton, so buy some sports shirts. You can get more affordable shirts at sport check than at an outdoor store, you really don't need fancy shirts made by companies like North Face, Nike does just fine.
Bring sunglasses and a hat as well as bug spray and sun screen. A pair of gloves or mits are nice if it ever gets cool and wet.

Best picture quality waterproof camera under £200?

Katy B

I want to get a camera as I'm currently borrowing my Dads when I need it. I'm doing Geology in college and later on, in Uni so need a camera which doesnt mind being dropped into puddles or rock pools and can withstand being dropped a bit. I've come across a few cameras, but I'm having trouble getting reliable reviews of them which definitively tell me the quality of the prints created. I guess that photo quality isnt the top priority (I'd rather have it waterproof and of slightly less photo quality) but I want it to be as good as it can be in the budget.

Q. I was looking at the Samsung sl720 but I'm not sure. I really suck at technological stuff, and I really want to get the best for my money. I really wanted a waterproof camera like the Olympus, but I'm not sure that's on my budget. please help !!

Answer
At least 10 - 30 times a day someone on YA asks: "Which one is a good camera to buy?"
A quick search would have given you hundreds of instant replies (without having to wait for answers), but once again here is my 10 cents on the subject:

Point & Shoot cameras are wonderfully handy because of their small size.
When light conditions are ideal, they even take really nice photos - all of them do.

However, they all DO have limitations - they don't do very well in low light situations (i.e. noisy photos, hard to avoid blur, etc). The little onboard flash is very harsh at close range, and doesn't reach very far.
Many of them have no manual functions, so you are limited to only very basic photos, you can't compensate for unusual situations, or do many fun "tricks" and special effects.
P&S's also suffer from frustrating shutterlag and many of them chew through batteries rather quickly.

If you're ok with all those limitations, then go ahead and pick one, most of them (the same type and same price range) are rather similar. Personally I would pick either a Canon or a Nikon, and would certainly stay away from Kodak.

A higher end P&S will give you more manual options and better quality. Many of those even give you the option of adding a proper flash (which makes a big difference to your flash photos).

Don't worry too much about megapixels - all modern cameras have plenty enough, plus there is a limit to how many pixels you can squash into a tiny P&S sensor before you actually LOSE quality rather than gain it. 6 megapixels is about the upper limit for those little sensors.
Don't worry about digital zoom, in fact, don't EVER use it. It simply crops away pixels, i.e. destroys information. The only real zoom is optical.

Some people ask for a camera that "doesn't take blurry photos". Blur is the photographer's problem, NOT the camera's. Even the most expensive camera will take blurry photos if the person behind it doesn't know what they're doing.

Some words about special effect features such as color accent, or even just b/w or sepia:
About applying any sort of effect in camera: DON'T DO IT !
Imagine if you just happen to take the best photo you ever took - surely you would want to have it in all its glory, right?
Always set your camera to biggest size, best quality (and to color).
That way, you start with the best possible photo as your original.
Then you make a copy and edit it to your heart's content.
You have much better control over any editing on your computer, even something as simple as b&w will look MUCH better when it was processed properly instead of in camera.
You can do all sorts of things to it PLUS you get to keep your original.

Decide which features are important to you, and look for cameras that have that feature.
Then go compare a few models on www.dpreview.com .

The very best thing you can do for your success is to borrow some books and learn about photography. A bit of knowledge will make a much bigger difference to your photos than your choice of P&S camera can.

For what it's worth - if I was in the market for a P&S camera right now, my choice would be a Canon Powershot SX20 IS http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=144&modelid=19208
I know that one is outside of your budget, I just wanted to let you know what MY choice would be.

Easy to use digital camera recommendations?

e_why

I would like some recommendations for digital cameras in the $250-350 range (U.S.) for my mom, who is not very tech savvy and needs some help with her photography skills. The camera must be easy to use (my mom needs help using a remote control, so it must be REALLY easy to use), but does not need lots of bells and whistles. Thanks in advance!

Answer
Normally I do not recommend their cameras but in your case Kodak would likely be your best bet. If there was ever a digital camera that was made for those who are scared of learning anything electronic it is a Kodak.

For the more knowledgeable user, it may be slightly annoying as these cameras tend to walk you through everything and leave out many of the manual settings other companies offer. However, for someone who wants a simply point and shoot, they don't get much more simple.

Plus, users of these camera's tend to love the printer docks that can be bought in a package or as an add-on accessory. They make it easy for someone who doesn't know how to use a computer well to get great quality(waterproof) prints.

Answer
hey bro, your not stupid or dumb, in fact you have asked an intelligent question. The kind of question everyone has but never asks.

I like Image`s so I will break it down if you don`t mind. First is painting

You know something ? I never really understood the beauty of such masterpieces such as Mona Lisa and I am calling it a masterpiece because everyone calls it that lol. But in truth I don`t see much beauty in that painting. If beauty is in the eye of the beholder then is it not that I should have an opinion of such too ? No Mona Lisa for me is simply a painting. I will tell you what pictures I have fallen in love with over and over again. I love looking at children`s drawings. It has so much honesty in it and it is so innocent. Those children paints from their heart, they put their love into their paintings. From they way they paint their houses, mothers, fathers to the unique way they draw the cars in their driveways and sometimes if you are lucky you can see they will draw a big heart representing love for their family in their paintings. That`s the best image you can ever have and that for me is higher in value over any Mona Lisa`s out there.

Nature Photographs.

Oh yes, I kinda like those photographs you get from National Geography books, I think National Geography in its history has photographed images never been photographed before. They have gone where no camera has gone before lol. I like their nature picture`s, like snow mountain, glaciers, himalaya mountain range, the plains of africa, underwater creatures like manatee`s, under the sea like some weird deep sea critters. Sometimes I stay fixated on this pictures for over 5 minutes studying the details of the pictures, its almost like i`m there when this happens. I get auto meditated on a picture well taken and I lose myself in those pictures. I also like pictures of monuments like old temple`s, churches, mosque, old buildings, houses, pyramids, old graveyards, pyramids, historical sites basically. When you lose yourself in these pictures then you kinda get this vibe of the life it had in the past and the picture comes alive. Like the old stadiums in Rome. But you gotta lose yourself in those pictures first.

Fashion Photo

Those magazine covers kinda stops me in my tracks, I kinda look at the beautiful ladies on the magazine covers, yeah I am shallow, hey I can`t help what I am attracted too, but of course it all just eye candy for me anyway most of the credit goes to the photographers too. I look at how the ladies are dressed, the pose and all. But I don`t like overly photoshoped picture`s, I mean flawless beauty can be a little too much for me, I need to see a little of imperfection here and there that makes the whole thing beautiful. I like pictures that are tastefully sexy and does not scream sex at your face but I don`t agree with one thing though, I dislike how young women I mean really young like 16 or 17 being sexualized in the photo`s at such a young age. Its one thing to photographed nice and good looking at that age but another being photographed in a mini or a low clevage top for an adult oriented magazine.

Cartoon/ Comic photo`s

I don`t know but I still like cartoon and comics in the old school way, you know what I mean ? Remember those oldschool cartoon`s presented in technicolor ? nowadays it all too sharp with computer graphics, I just feel that the cartoons is not as alive as the cartoon those days, the computer graphics kinda takes the life out of the colors. I don`t know if this is because i grew up watching the painted cartoons. Remember the old comics where the colors are easier on the eyes ? It just feels soft and the comics and cartoon feels like comic and cartoon instead of feeling like a plastic lifeless dolls moving around because the sharpness of the graphics

See the diffrience between this two
