Sara

if yes, what one? if not, where is there a waterproof camera I can find?

Answer
The Nikon Coolpix AW100 is water-proof, shock-proof and freeze-proof, has 5x optical zoom and costs 270$.

There are a few waterproof cases, such as : http://goo.gl/HujjM
For the Nikon L10,L11,L12,and the L14.

Or : http://www.amazon.com/Waterproof-Nikon-D3000-Underwater-Hous/dp/B003L75CUC
For Nikon D40, D60, D90, D3000, D300S, and D5000

There are also these cameras, that aren't Nikon :
Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX10 : waterproof, shockproof, dustproof and freeze-proof.
Canon PowerShot D10 : Waterproof, freezeproof and shockproof
Kodak Easyshare Sport C123 : Dustproof, and waterproof
SVP Wp5300 : Water proof to 10 feet deep.
Coleman Xtreme C5wp : Waterproof up to 33 feet
Olympus X-560wp : Waterproof
Fujifilm XP10,XP20,XP30 : waterproof , shockproof, freezeproof and dustproof
Fujifilm FinePix Z33WP : Waterproof up to 10 feet

Any good waterproof/shock proof camera suggestions ?

Waffles

Preferably something under $200, but if its worth it go ahead and name it.
I'm looking for something with good picture quality in AND out of the water. Something that will NOT fog up, or let water inside it. One with buttons that won't break after a day.

Basically a good quality, but not too pricey, underwater camera. :)

Answer
Throughout history film cameras have required extra care due to delicate mirrors, & damage due to weather ect.
Technology has change most but not all special camera care needs.
The battery door is small & requires care that its hinge isn't snapped off from carelessness.
A Fuji skin protector $13.00 is available for more durability & better grip.
Otherwise...............................
The Fuji XP20 works great for $150
Its priced similar to other high quality other pocket cameras that are not tough or waterproof.
After a fast battery charge and a 3 - 5 minute menu set up this camera takes excellent photos like other Fuji pocket cameras.
Many ignorant reviewers whined & complained saying it takes yellowed photos indoors and great outdoors.
Read the manual and get the camera settings correct for the photos being taken.
A special feature on this camera setting takes two lightning fast photos.
One is a natural lighting shot without flash (it produced yellowed pic indoors) & one with a flash.
Basically the photo with flash the photo is perfect.

Does the Coleman Xtreme c5wp shock waterproof camera take video?

Melanie

I just recently ordered the Coleman Xtreme c5wp shock waterproof camera. I was planning on using it for pictures at beaches and at pools. Now I'm wondering does it take video? Thank you.

Answer
Too bad you did not look at the Nikon S30 camera for under $120. It has an optical zoom and can shoot HD video. It is also shock and waterproof

http://www.nikonusa.com/Nikon-Products/Product/Compact-Digital-Cameras/26317/COOLPIX-S30.html

The Coleman is more of a toy with NO optical zoom and no listing for a video feature.

I recently bought an inexpensive camera, the Sony HD Webbie and have been having a lot of fun honing my photography skills but I would like to take some underwater shots. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas of how to waterproof a video camera (I also take still shots with it) without having to buy those expensive underwater casings.

Answer
There is no such thing as a waterproof video camera, aside from professional ones that are used for movies and such. Unless you happen to have an extra $100,000 layin around, I don't think you're going to get a waterproof camera. Sorry. If it's stills you are looking for, there are waterproof disposable cameras.

How can I make My camera waterproof?

I am making a movie with my friend and we need to go underwater. How can I make my camera waterproof?

Answer
There are waterproof cases that you might get from a camera shop or maybe a dive shop, but these will be expensive.

Some places make a heavy duty waterproof bag with a built-in glove and a special window for the lens. These would be a cheaper way.

Q. anyone have any opinions no a camera i should buy, i want to be able to take up to 1-2 hr of video and capture great pictures (12 megapix or more). but i don't want to spend to much money about $150-200.

also aside of that if you have any opinions on waterproof camera's that have the same features. thanks for the help. :)

Answer
If you're talking about still cameras, the duration of video you take depends upon how much storage and spare batteries you have. If you want to, you can swap memory cards if one gets full. Its pointless to have a compact camera which more than 10 mega-pixel. Or otherwise the cameras are going to output noisy image if you're not in a well lit scene. You should focus more on the general quality of the images being output and low-light performance rather than mega-pixel count. Anyway, the following are my recommendations where some of them slightly exceed your budget:
#1 http://reviews.cnet.com/digital-cameras/sony-cyber-shot-dsc/4505-6501_7-33946418.html
#2 http://reviews.cnet.com/digital-cameras/canon-powershot-sx120-is/4505-6501_7-33765882.html
#3 http://reviews.cnet.com/digital-cameras/canon-powershot-a1100-is/4505-6501_7-33528998.html

If you need a waterproof camera for rare occasions, and don't mind about hazy image, just plop any camera into a resealable plastic bag to make it waterproof. Otherwise, you'll need to increase you budget, if you want to buy a good waterproof camera.

Best point and shoot camera? No delay!?

Evan

I have a Nikon D90 and a D50 but sometimes you just can't take them everywhere. I am looking for a small point and shoot to carry with me wherever I go.

- compact
- 8+ MP
- waterproof would be awesome
- any brand as long as it takes quality photos
- NO DELAY! (thats the problem with my point and shoot now)
All cameras obviously have SOME delay... I'm just looking for one that has very litte... along with being compact (thin) and takes quality photos

Answer
Stock answer alert: This was written over a year ago, but it might help you.

If you pre-focus by pressing the shutter button half-way down while aiming at your subject - or where you anticipate your subject will be when you want to take the picture - it will help considerably. You can set your camera in "Sport" mode or "Scenery" and this will minimize the lag. If you do not use the flash, it will help. If you turn off "face detection," it will help. If you turn off the LCD monitor and use the viewfinder only, it will help. If you use the continuous shooting mode for a burst of 4 or 5 shots, there will be no pre-focus in between those shots. For most point and shoot cameras, this will give you 1.5-to-2 frames per second, but you can't use flash.

Some point and shoot cameras are better than others. I have a Canon Powershot SD950-IS that seems quite fast to me. If you go to http://www.dpreview.com and read the reviews (once they are available for the cameras you are considering), you can go to the page called "Performance" and see exactly what the tested shutter lag is, as well as several other performance benchmarks.

Here's a link showing a chart of various cameras and their shutter lag as well as the time it takes to shoot five frames. You will not see any DSLR's listed, because they have no shutter lag. If you click on the column heading, such as "One Shot," the chart will sort according to that measurement.
http://www.cameras.co.uk/html/shutter-lag-comparisons.cfm You may have to go to http://www.dpreview.com and look around to figure out what the Canon IXUS designations compare to for non-European models if you are not in Europe.

Here's a list of four good cameras with brief shot-to-shot delays of less than 1.5 seconds (in good light) each: http://www.cnet.com.au/digitalcameras/cameras/0,239036184,339271492,00.htm

What is a good waterproof digital camera for SCUBA diving?

Sunnyboy

I'm looking for a compact digital camera which I can use both in and out of the water. Most of the good waterproof cameras which I have found are only rated to 10 meters, which is insufficient. Am I better off buying a regular camera and a waterproof case? I have seen some of these offered by Canon.

Answer
You're best off to do a little research on the camera you really want and then see if there's a decent underwater housing for it. Personally, I'd steer clear of the actual camera manufacturer's housings. They tend not to allow use of all the camera functions and they are usually only just good enough that they can claim a depth rating of 130ft max. You're better off protecting that camera investment by purchasing a decent housing like an IkeLite ( if it's available for your camera). They're rated to 200 feet and each is factory tested to pass that. I own a Canon A720IS, that canon does make the housing for, but it was so cheaply made that I opted for the IkeLite housing instead. That housing cost TWICE as much as the actual camera. But I know the camera is safe and that model does everything I want in a camera, both above and below.
As for amphibs ( cameras that are in their own housing such as Sea&Sea, or Bonica) I'd advise against unless you don't mind lugging a large housing around on the surface or what your photos will actually look like. Amphibs are a compromise solution. They don't take great above water shots and they don't take great underwater shots. They do both only "ok" as opposed to a higher end camera that you put in a higher end housing.
When you're looking for a camera, keep a few things in mind.
What's it's power consumption like? Changing batteries is impossible on a dive.
What's it's storage format and capacity? You can't swap out cards on a dive.
How easy is it to point and shoot? You're looking through a housing with a mask on your face, can you see what you're aiming at?
You may be wearing gloves when diving. Can you manipulate those function buttons on the housing easily?
What are the options for adding things like strobes, lens or video lights later? What about the actual camera modes? You may find yourself doing macro or wide angle pics. Maybe at night? Maybe in low vis....that onboard flash can then be your worst enemy since you may not have an option to disable it and all you'll get is backscatter.
My advice... choose ten cameras that do what it is that you intend on doing. Find out if a dedicated manufacturer of dive camera housings makes a housing for those cameras. Then choose from between the ones that do.

Thanks:) PS i would like a really good one, I can save up money for a long time if i need too. But relatively cheap would be nice, I am buying this for myself
Oh and if it helps I have the Dell Inspiron laptop.... please answer:)

I really like Canon cameras. They have always lived up to expected and are very user-frendly

I am considering buying the OLYMPUS Stylus 550WP Blue 10.0 MP 2.5" LCD 3X Optical Zoom Waterproof Digital Camera with the open box policy from newegg. Would this be a mistake? Would the camera somehow not be waterproof?? It would be a savings of $40 if I bought it the open box way. Is it worth the risk?

Answer
Newegg is a highly rated site with very high levels of customer satisfaction.

Buying open box is always a risk because that means that someone has been in that box. Was the camera removed? Did someone shoot photos with it? Does it carry the full maker's warranty? Did some one handle or mishandle the camera? All these are valid questions.

With newegg's high ratings however, you'll probably be safe. However I still believe you'd be better off not saving the $40 and buy new.

These kinds of deals can be so tempting but... who really knows besides newegg - I don't and I don't think you do either.

Good Luck

Ken Jakern

Sorry for the weird question, but even after much googling, I can't seem to find any details regarding how to determine the winner of a fly fishing competition and thus, I would appreciate if someone can re-direct me or tell me more information about it.

Answer
If it's a "boating" tournament with live-wells, it would be like any tourney- bring your largest catch back to the ramp to be weighed. Heaviest WEIGHT wins.....

If it's a "walking/kayak/float-tube" tourney, typically, at the beginning of the tournament, they will distribute disposable digital camera's and waterproof measuring tape to all fishermen. You take a picture with your catch next to the tape. LONGEST fish wins.....

Hope this helps you?

How can I put a camera on my guitar head? (Guitar Cam)?

Hello everybody!

I have been watching some videos on youtube, and some people have recorded it from the head of there guitar, like the guitar where the tuners are looking down the strings, it look really cool!

And i was wondering if anyone could tell me a tutorial on how to do it porfavor (please :)?

Thank you very much! x

Answer
I have used helmet cams, but eventually I got a fairly cheap "pinhole board camera" from a company that markets to security and Law Enforcement. It is the camera only, and needs to hook up to a camcorder or digital video recorder to record.

I put mine into a waterproof Nalgene bottle. I have used it on my kayak, ski-cam, bike-cam, and for external close shots of vehicles (like a tire angle) anything where I don't want to risk my good camera.

Here is a link to the security supplier, maybe just get one of their "Lipstick cams", all are pretty light. The nice thing with a pinhole, it will be in focus from a few inches in front of the camera to infinity.

Answer
The camera you've linked to has good reviews. This is a waterproof camera and should take just as good pics as a 'normal' camera - the lens/sensor etc is all the same. The only difference is that this one has waterproof seals to stop water getting in.

Just a word of warning - this type of camera is ok in a pool (shallow water) but is only waterproof to 3m for a max time of 2 hours. If you push it beyond its limits, it may leak.

which camcorder shall i get?(description is important).?

notbeingme

I'm looking for a camcorder but don't know what I really need to be asking for when I go to get one. Does anyone have any recommendations? This is roughly what I am looking for but I don't know if it's unrealistic or if there are other important features I need to be looking out for....?

In theory ....

- I want it to be HD, decent sound and picture quality.
- I don't want a shoulder mounted thing, but it can be bigger than a credit card!
- I would like it to film well in poorly lit/ darker places as well as bright, sunny places.
- Is it important to have a flash on a camcorder!? I don't want it for stills.
- I would also, if possible, like it to be waterproof.
- I would like reasonable image stabilisation as I wouldn't be using a tripod or anything like that and a zoom that doesn't go really grainy.
- I'd like to be able to add extra memory as well.
- I don't want to re-mortgage to get it either!!!

Any recommendations regarding a specific camcorder would be greatly appreciated, or any help with what I need to be looking/ asking for?

Answer
These are the brands I would trust and recommend: Canon, JVC, Panasonic, Samsung, Sanyo and Sony. There are many low end junky cameras on the market. If the specs look too good to be true, there's probably something wrong. For example, there is no such thing as an HD camcorder for less than $200 worth buying. In fact, even under $250 is going to be marginal at best.
The accessories you buy are just as important. Tripod, lighting, microphone, etc are something you don't want to overlook. You will be hard pressed to find a camcorder for less than $500 with the ability to take an external microphone. At some point, even if you are only a little serious, you will regret not having a microphone jack. Take this advice, I have a nice Samsung HMX-H200 camcorder that is now discontinued. I paid $250 for it. A month ago It was down to $220. When it first came to market in 2010, it was around $300. What you look at today will be cheaper tomorrow. In a short period, it will be replaced. The replacement will cost more. It may or may not do more or do it better.
By the way, I REALLY regret not having an external microphone for this camera, other than that, I'm OK with it.
Whatever brand/model you are interested in, chances are good somebody on YouTube has uploaded sample, review or test video from it.

Were we being too mean?

underwater camera yacht on Underwater Camera,Micro AV A complete Pocket Size underwater camera ...
underwater camera yacht image

Maggie M

My boyfriend and I, and two of my girlfriends were watching this really bad action movie the other night.

Near the end, there is this scene on a big yacht, and there's a scene with this woman and this fat, older guy. The guy was always perving on the young woman, and tried to force himself on her earlier in the movie.
In this scene, she is kissing him, and rubbing him through his pants while they stand by the railing, As he's getting very excited, she pushes him over the side of the boat, and he falls into the shark infested waters. This was obviously the reason she was trying to get him aroused.
The next camera shot is underwater, and a shark swims up from below, and you can clearly see that it attacks/bites the guy between his spread legs.
Two guys run to the railing as if to help him. The woman who pushed him laughs and says "Just leave him. He's no good to anyone now. Let them have him", and she stands there watching. The guy is of course screaming from being bitten between the legs, and the woman blows him a kiss and laughs. Another shark comes in and pulls him under and they eat him.

Both my friends and I laughed at the scene where the shark attacks the guy's crotch, and also laughed at the woman's reaction and what she said.

My boyfriend got upset, saying that the woman was evil, and that the guy didn't deserve it.
We told him it was just a movie, and he was a bad guy anyway.

Would you laugh as well? Were we being insensitive?

Which part of the scene do you think is funnier?

We (my boyfriend, his sister and I) were watching this really bad action movie the other night.

Near the end, there is this scene on a big yacht, and there's a scene with this woman and this fat, older guy. The guy was always perving on the young women onboard, and tried to force himself on this woman earlier in the movie.
In this scene they are standing by the side of the yacht. She is kissing him, and rubbing his crotch with her hand, getting him all horny. She suddenly pushes him over the side of the boat, and he falls into the shark infested waters.

The next camera shot is underwater, and a shark swims up from below, and you can clearly see that it attacks/bites the guy between his spread and kicking legs, obviously biting off his dick and nuts.
Two guys run to the railing as if to help him. The woman who pushed him laughs and says "Just leave him. He's no good to anyone now. Let her have him", and she stands there watching. The guy is of course screaming from being bitten between the legs, and the woman blows him a kiss and laughs. The shark pulls him under and eats him.

Both me and my boyfriend's sister laughed at the scene, but my boyfriend said we were "bitches" for laughing at it, and he got all pouty.

Did we do something wrong? Would other girls have laughed too? Tell me why you thought it was funny, because he doesn't seem to get it.

Q. I am stuck on what to get.
I want a camera that takes good quality photos.
I live right next t the beach, g to the pool a lot and am wondering if I should get a waterproof camera.
Should I get one?
Thanks soooo much in advance!

Answer
if you are fond of taking your pictures and hobbies include the beach and pool a waterproof camera is great! although there are concerns about cameras leaking you can get cameras which have an extra lens screen which will minimize the chance of water getting in and now-a-days battery covers will have a rubber seal so a tiny hair or fibre shouldn't create a leakage. the higher the depth of water resistance the less likely it is for water to get in, the advised depth is 5m because it is rather hard to swim this deep but it ensures this camera would have good protection against water and pressure. its there in your hand for any picture. pictures can speak really well to describe yourself which hobbies fall into so enjoying aquatic activities would be even better with a waterproof camera. just imagine those stunning shots you could get from in the pool of your and your friends! especially with sunlight beams pouring into the pool and through onto the pool floor! having a waterproof camera will put no limits to the pictures you can take. good quality pictures can be taken from a camera as simple as an 8MP which is why there a wide range of possibilities to choose from. if your looking for one that you want to use out of water aswell there are quite a few you could get the best one advised to me was the sony TX10, i got this for christmas and could not be happier it has a 16.2MP and a 4X optical zoom. it is water resistant guaranteed up to 5m and also shockproof to 1.5 m it has a sweep power mode and captures stunning moments with a fast shutter! this one is a little pricey though at around £250 so if you still want great quality but at a lower price i would go for the samsung wp10 this is 12.2 megapixel which is still great and has an internal 5x zoom. it is a compact camera and comes in a wide range of colours including: light turquoise, red, yellow and black unfortunately it is only up to 3 meters water resistant and does not have any shock proof abilities. this one comes in on the market at around £125
hope this helps a bit! :)

What happens if I take my 5m waterproof camera further than 5m?

Joseph

Is 5m just splash proof or can I actually take it in the beach with me?
I want to know how waterproofit really is.
It's an Olympus tylus Tough Camera

Answer
Really? How about some common sense. It's guaranteed to 5M. Beyond that? it's not guaranteed not to leak. The pressure of the water will push water into it at some point. The end for your camera.

Digital underwater camera...Disposible?

Hollywood

I saw this digital underwater camera at radio shack today (same one that AVON sells.)

and it said it takes 187 pictures (or around there, I dont remember exactly) I was wondering if anyone has used this camera...and if so, does that mean its disposible?

also...since its digital...is there anyways you can re-program it to make it reusable?? by like delete the files off the camera after adding them to your computer?

Have you ever tried this product....
if so, can you somehow make it reusable? lol.

Answer
As far as the Avon camera, the description says "download pictures to your computer with the included software. Compatible with Windows 2000, XP, ME." After downloading the pictures you delete them from the camera and take more. It is not disposible.

In need of a waterproof digital camera that shoots great quality pictures.?

Destiny

I am going to the Caribbean and need to get an affordable waterproof camera that takes high quality pictures underwater and above. I'll be diving and snorkeling so the farther the depth of the camera the better. I want it to be inexpensive so $150 at most. I'll only be using it this one time so I don't want to spend much. Anybody know of any?

Answer
I also suggest you Kodak C123 for such a price. Or if you have a compact digital already, DiCAPac waterproof pouches.

Add some accessories

Can you help me weigh my options for underwater photography on a budget?

audrey

I am going to Hawaii for winter break. I'd love to take a camera snorkeling with me. I have a Canon AE-1 Program (an old film SLR) and a pretty good Sony point-and-shoot (Cybershot DSC H20). I've heard that underwater housing for the AE-1 is incredibly hard to come by, so I guess my options are:
1. A waterproof bag for my Canon, though this is probably not the best option because it would make it very difficult to manually focus
2. A bag or housing for my Sony. I have no idea if this is a good option or not. Where do I find either of these things, and how much would they cost?
3. I've been thinking about buying the cheapest GoPro. Is it worth it in terms of picture quality? Is it very durable? If so, this might be a good option because I'm pretty active outdoors. I've been in lots of situations where taking a camera around has made me very nervous, for example when climbing a tree. If the GoPro can stand some banging around, and if its quality is good, it would be a good investment.
4. A disposable waterproof camera. I haven't been too impressed with photos I've seen from disposables, but maybe there are good disposables out there that you know of. Cheap and simple... sounds pretty appealing.

Answer
A waterproof bag is going to cost you around $400.

A waterproof housing for that camera will cost around $1,800.

Gopros are great for video, but they are really hard to compose still images with.

I don't think any of those options is good. Personally I would look into buying a waterproof point and shoot. Something like a Sony Cybershot DSC-TF1. It is $198, totally waterproof, and 16 megapixels which is far more resolution than you can get with the AE-1 even if you are using the finest grain transparency film.

Also, having done underwater photography with a film camera, I can attest that it is a major pain in the ass. White balance and available light are effected heavily by depth. At 30 feet, you need a deep red filter and a lot of extra light (also gelled for color balance) to get normal looking images. Underwater film photography is a very complicated process, made more so by only having 36 exposures, and the inability to change the film speed once you are in the water.

With a digital point and shoot, it is so much easier. You can use a higher ISO and auto or underwater white balance to get images that still look good with little or no effort. It is also a lot easier to see the LCD than look through a viewfinder with a diving mask on.

what do I need for a 3 month wilderness camping trip for 3 people?

Kyle

I am planning a camping trip at the end of the year in texas. We are going to be completely ruffing it with no running water other than what we bring or find naturally. No electricity or any other creature comforts. How do I plan for it? What do I need?

Answer
I cant agree more with C_Kayak_. You really need to ease into a trip of this duration and try out a weekend trip first with someone that's been camping before to help you learn the ropes. Build up to a week long trip and know your gear as well as your own limitations before you should even think about planning an adventure like this. That having been reiterated...I'm Happy to hear that you have caught the camping bug. Its always a fantastic adventure to explore the great outdoors. You don't mention but I take it that you'll be disbursed camping with your car.

You probably already have a lot of stuff that you can use for camping in your house.

Here's a short list of camping equipment:

Shelter - Tent, poles, stakes, ground sheet
Sleeping - Sleeping bag, sleeping pad
Essentials - Water bottles& water purification methods, waterproof matches/lighter, map & compass, basic first aid kit, whistle and/or signal mirror, nylon cord-50', pocket knife, emergency blanket, extra food, extra clothing, sunglasses, sunscreen, water purification, headlamp or flashlight and extra batteries. Keep these items in your day pack when you go hiking and exploring.
Cooking - Stove, fuel, cook set, spoon/knife/fork set, biodegradable soap, scrub pad, food
Base camp accessories - Cooler/ice chest, water bag or large jug, dish pan, paper towels, lantern, storage containers for food, Ziploc bags, large spoon, knife, spatula, can opener, small whisk, small grater, hot pad holders, plate/bowl, cup, cutting board, aluminum foil, spice kit.
Miscellaneous - bandana, camera, binoculars, repair/sewing kit, fishing gear, journal/pen or pencil, reading material, nature guides, trail games, trowel, toilet paper, personal toiletries, lip balm, bug repellant, towel, day pack.

Make sure you take clothing appropriate for the climate you expect to encounter.
Inner Layer - wicking layer: long underwear top & bottom, liner socks, outer socks, t-shirt, shorts
Insulation Layer - Wool, synthetic or fleece shirt/sweater down/fiberfill jacket, wool or fleece pants, gloves, wool or fleece hat.
Protective layer - Rain/windproof jacket & pants, gaiters, hiking boots waterproofed, camp shoes, sun hat.
Happy Trails to you!

What is the best telephoto Lens to use for family pictures at the beach using a canon rebel?

Kristina

I am a beginner photographer. Going on vacation want to be able to capture good candid pictures of the kids and family (10 people). What would be the best telephoto lens? I have a macro lens and that's all. I don't think that will capture a good normal pic. Any suggestions? I have a canon EOS Rebel

Answer
Your macro should also function as a "normal" lens, but you don't mention its size.

As far as the zoom lens, my favorite is the 70-200 f/2.8L (a monopod can come in handy though, with this lens on my camera everything weighs in around 6 pounds).

One piece of advice....BEWARE OF THE SAND!!!! Sand and cameras do not make good friends. When dealing with that situation, I keep my equipment in a waterproof hard case (for the good seal), along with a "rocket" blower and other cleaning material. I also try to keep the camera at least 3' above the sand (call me paranoid).

Answer
What is "best" for you depends a great deal on your requirements. Are enlargements of 8X10 or larger necessary? Will you be frequently shooting in low light? Are extra lenses for your camera e.g. telephoto, wide angle or macro something that you might want to purchase? Having asked this bevy of questions, I bought a Canon A620 (7 megapixels) last October and I've been just delighted with it. The image quality is outstanding and my 11X14s are excellent. The 2" vari-angle LCD is quite wonderful and the movie mode is amazingly good. I post videos on my blog by first uploading to DropShots to get the HTML and then simply pasting it in to my Blogger account. It uses SD cards which seem to be dropping in price and 4 AA batteries which, although I heartily recommend rechargeables, are always available in emergencies. I purchased a Canon macro lens and I'm also preparing to get the external flash unit and the waterproof case shortly. It's a fairly compact camera, but still sturdy in feel and although you won't get it into a shirt pocket, it will easily fit into a coat pocket, backpack or purse. Image stabilization and RAW would have been great additions, but all things considered I don't think that you can do any better for the price. There are several websites that offer camera reviews, but stevesdigicams.com is a great place to begin if you're interested in checking around. Good luck in your search.

Would appreciate thoughts on the Fuji Finepix HS20 EXR?

FatherRyan

Am a Kayaker and need a camera capable of taking High quality pics while kayaking in the lakes of South Island New Zealand. I realise that it is not an SLR, however it is smaller, less bulky and far more practical to carry in the Day hatch of a kayak for on water use, also the one lens suits all is attractive. Anybody with experience with this camera, or its HS10 predecessor I would appreciate your thoughts

Answer
You're not going to get real high quality images with this camera. That's because it has a very small image sensor (1/2"). This link shows you image sensor sizes...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Sensor_sizes_overlaid_inside_-_updated.svg

The larger the sensor, the better. You can see that the HS20 has a minutely smaller sensor than the smallest one shown. So, it will perform best using a low ISO, which is just fine for outdoor, daylight use. Mid to high ISO images are fairly poor, showing high amounts of noise. It IS capable of shooting in RAW, however with such as small sensor, I doubt they'd be high quality.

I don't know about you, but I would be a little nervous taking a camera out on a kayak if it wasn't waterproof or protected by a waterproof housing. So, have you thought about a waterproof camera? You might not get ultra high quality images, but at least you'd have some peace of mind. Look at the Panasonic TS3 or Sony TS10...
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/Q311waterproofcompactgrouptest/page12.asp

If you're still determined to get the HS20 EXR...just don't get it wet. I don't see a real problem with AA batteries...you can buy non rechargeable lithium e.g. Energizer Ultimate for long battery life.

My FujiFilm Z33 Waterproof camera won't turn on?

waterproof camera z33 image

My camera is waterproof and I've used it tons of times, lately I haven't been using it underwater, but just takng regular pics. So one day I tried to turn it on and would'nt turn on. so I charged the battery and put it in all different ways and it STILL wouldn't turn on. I tried plugging into the computer and turning it on but nothing is working. Help?

Answer
Maybe it wasn't as waterproof as you thought it was...

It might be the battery. I had a camera that I had completely drained the battery of. Whenever it turned off automatically to conserve power, I would turn it back on until there was just no juice left. I had to get a new battery.

The flash on my camera isn't working?

Julia

I have a Fujifilm WaterProof Camera (http://www.gadgetfolder.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/finepix-z33-640x254.jpg) And I put it on flash and its not working. Help!

Answer
Whenever I have a question/problem such as yours, I read the user's guide (aka "the manual").
It is amazing just how much I always learn from that.

If that doesn't help (or if I'm interested in a product I don't own), I check the manufacturer's website.
They have descriptions and specs for their gadgets, often have user forums, and the decent manufacturers all let you download the manuals in electronic form (so losing the book is no longer a problem).

99% of the time that does the trick.

There could be a problem with your camera, but with any luck you're simply in the wrong mode, or some such minor issue. Hopefully the manual will solve your problems for you.
