Is this a good camera to buy?

Mrs.Allen

I need a good camera for a reasonable price..is this camera a good one. Im need it to be waterproof for my vacation pics. OLYMPUS CORPORATION - TG-830 iHS 16.0-Mega pixel Digital Camera with 5-25mm Lens' in Digital Cameras

Answer
Olympus release 2 waterproof cameras this year. TG-830 is the budget one and there is more highend one, Olympus TG-2 iSH whch is $379 at Amazon.

This year most camera brands has already released their 2 waterpoof cameras and TG-830 probably the best one with features in budget line but also the most expensive one.

Sony digital camera( DSC-TX30/B)....this camera good or no? please tell........?

Kelum Weer

Answer
Here is a review
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/sony-cyber-shot-dsc-tx30
Within the category of immersible compact cameras, its image quality is probably among the best in the studio test, although that is not a category with spectacularly great image quality. In the real world comparison tests it seems to have fallen a bit below the competition.
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/2013-waterproof-roundup/14
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/2013-waterproof-roundup/15
It is the lightest and most compact within that class. However, it is not a very easy camera to handle for actual diving.

With any compact camera you should use a wriststrap, and all the more so when handling these water resistant cameras in the water. with no floatation attached, they will sink.

For diving the Canon D20 has an advantage with the best ergonomics. Image quality is good for its class with least noise reduction smudging or highlight clipping. The Nikon AW110 is a very good overall performer for its class in image quality and has least chromatic aberration. The Olympus TG-2 gains an advantage in low light with its f2 lens. For video with real time sound, its sound gets terrible when immersed in water.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WBFwthdyXRQ
The Pentax WG-3 also has an f2 lens, but its images were rather dull in this test
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jnxn_Ng-1U8
The Panasonic TS5 seems to produce some nice images, and it has the best video options, but its autofocus is sluggish.

A peculiar thing about the Nikon AW110 is that they package it with a neckstrap and advise against using a neckstrap in the water for safety reasons. An aftermarket wriststrap should be purchased for it.

Underwater camera....?

dr0pdead_x

Hi.
I would like an underwater camera which is cheap and about 7 or 8 megapixels and digital.
CHEAP, like $200? $300? $.........400?
THanks,

any websites you know or any models you suggest..

Answer
You can visit most local dive shops. They'll have a photography section. Many will have Sea&Sea or Bonica cameras in stock that will fit the bill. Sea&Sea have a few models that they have just discontinued that you can pick up for a reasonable price.
Here's a link to a complete Bonica Snapper with carry case for 400 bucks. http://www.bonicadive.com/?p2=modules/bonica/product.jsp&productId=41
There are also a number of lesser known models out there like this one, for example http://travelsportsequipment.com/catalog/product_info.php?cPath=28_48&products_id=38&osCsid=5e36ab2289c418df9e0768bdf2b9c42f
that fit your price range.
Canon also makes a number of cameras with their own underwater housing ( extra) that the combined price also comes in under your budget.
Contrary to what someone else has said...you don't need to spend a grand to go digital underwater. Heck, I spent less than 600 for an Ike Lite housing ( top of the line housing rated to 200 feet) and my Canon 8MP A720IS combined.
These cameras and housings that I've mentioned , are all rated to at least 150 feet. Not like most "WalMart" type models that are only good to 45 feet or so or the even cheaper "day at the beach" type rigs that typically are only good to 16 feet and also are only in the 4-5 MP range. You don't really mention which you want so I'm assuming that if you want 8 MP, you want a better rig for doing macro reef photography.
If, on the other hand, you want a rig that easily falls in your price range but is in the 5 MP category, there's always this one: http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=9604830#Item+Description
from WalMart. I personally wouldn't be using it for scuba diving, but for a day at the beach or for snorkeling, it would survive and for 55 bucks and if you accidentally strayed to 60 feet, cheap to replace.

underwater cameras?

KayyBayy

I am looking for a moderatly priced underwater camera that works both on land and under water.

Any suggestions?

Answer
hey, there are indeed some cameras that can work under-water and on dry-land, however there are limitations to this.

Hey, this is a camera from the olympus brand:
http://www.amazon.com/Olympus-Stylus-790SW-Waterproof-Orange/dp/B000UW3DB6/ref=pd_bbs_10?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1211836698&sr=8-10
it can shoot pictures and video underwater, but only to ten feet, which if you're not in a pool, can be hard to judge. But would be much better than just buying alot of single use water-proof cameras.

http://www.amazon.com/Olympus-Stylus-790SW-Waterproof-Orange/dp/B000UW3DB6/ref=pd_bbs_10?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1211836698&sr=8-10
this is a very cheap, single use ten dollar camera, it's disposable and costs money to develop, but can shoot at 50feet under-water.

I guess it would depend on how frequently you would visit the ocean/pool. if you barely go , but go deep get the little kodak one. But, if you want to take alot of pictures that have better quality and can use on/off shore get the olympus

happy purchasing,
Nathan Grammatico.

Underwater camera?

Hey all I am looking for a good underwater camera for a girlfriend of mine. I know I could always go ask someone at a shop but I really donât want a salesmanâs point of view. What Iâm looking for is the makes and models of some good ones and if you know the price range too that would be great.
She is a diver so this will be used more than just a one time thing.
OK sorry more details needed I guess. She dives and I need a camera that can go at about 100ft down

Answer
Your budget is going to play a big part here. You can spend as little as 200 Canadian dollars or go all out and drop 3,000 dollars. If she currently has a camera, you can see if there's a company , like Ikelite.com, that produces a housing for it. They support many of the popular brand name cameras. This is your cheapest option. There's also Henrys.com, an online camera retailer that also has stores in the US and Canada. They are starting to sell both housings and cameras that are amphib's (use on surface and underwater).
There are other manufacturers out there like Nikonos and Sea & Sea that poduce amphibs. Generally you can pick one up for 350- 500 Canadian dollars.
What to look for in a camera or housing? Big buttons so that you can use them with gloves on. Buttons for all of the cameras functions too as not all housings will support all of the camera's functions, especially digitals. Strobe support is an important feature. One of the biggest problems an underwater photographer faces is called back scatter. Light from the flash hits suspended particles in the water and produces a "snowstorm" in the image at times. A strobe attachment eliminates this but needs to have a camera and housing that support attaching one.
If you're looking for a "ready to go" unit, Sea and Sea make a digital now that has the strobe option and is about 500 Canadian plus the cost of the strobe kit. It has a built in flash, so will work without the strobe, but you may experience back scatter by using the flash alone.
Depth rating? If she's an avid recreational diver, you'll want something rated to at least 120 feet, as she's either already an Advanced open water diver or planning on it in the future. 150 feet would be better but as long as she stays within recreational limits, even if she maxs out to 130, the camera and housing should tolerate the extra 10 feet. The only issue would be if something were to go wrong, your warranty won't cover it.
Myself? I own an old fashioned Sea &Sea MX 5 film amphib with no strobe. I spend most of my time diving and not with a camera stuck to my face so I don't take a lot of pics. :) It's rated for 120 ft, but that hasn't been an issue at 170 as the camera has been that far when I forgot that I had it still on my BC on a dive. I don't suggest that anyone try that on purpose though.

Is the GE dv1 waterproof video camera able to shoot in 16:9 wide screen format? It says it shoots HD video but can I film videos on it that can be uploaded to YouTube without bars.

Answer
it can shoot in 16:9 (1080x1920 pixel) format. but whether you get bars or shutters on your youtube uploads is determined by the editing software you use, not the camera, and the choices you make for publishing.

hi, i was wondering where i might be able to get a waterproof digital camera, preferably around 100$?

crazygirl1

150$ or less works too.

Answer
Hi Lauren. That is not possible. Fact... there is no such thing as a waterproof camera, digital or otherwise. What you might be remembering seeing are those underwater pictures of coral reefs and the like. It is not the cameras that are waterproof but the housing or casings that fit around the camera body. ( We have one in our camera store.) They do make those but they have to be designed for the specific camera. I think I remember that Kodak had one. I know that Nikon and Canon make the underwater housings but again, you have to have a specific camera for the specific housing. Check Craig's List for "a digital camera and underwater housing set". You might luck out and find one for what you are wanting to spend. Hope that helps.

I'm using a DSLR camera how can i shoot underwater footage?

Christian

Answer
If the camera isn't already waterproof, look for a waterproof housing or waterproof case for it.

Don't get the cheapest one unless it has a lot of great ratings--I saw a guy using one of those and it started to leak and ruined his camera.

Below is a link to some of them so you can see what I mean.

Camera Feature for Screen Clarity?

REBECCA

What is the feature on a digital underwater camera that determines the visibility of the screen in bright sunlight? Where can I find that feature rated on various competitive cameras?
Thx

Answer
I guess the brightness could be rated in lumens, but I have never seen ratings given for screen brightness nor any comparison for that feature. All LCDs are pretty bad in bright sunlight. The best you can do is pick the highest resolution LCD and look for an LCD hood to protect it from the sun, like this: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Maxsima-Protector-Screen-Cover-shade/dp/B003NMTK3A/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1351269637&sr=8-8

Mind you, LCD brightness seems a particularly strange criteria for selecting a camera, particularly an underwater one. Image quality, waterproofing and depth of waterproofing should be far more important.

What waterproof camera do you recommend?

alyssia n

I would like to get a waterproof camera since my camera is a bit outdated. I have looked at a few reviews and am having mixed decisions. While some may have good quality, some cameras take too long to take a picture, some have bad quality pictures, and some others cant handle all the water. I want a quality camera, that takes great pictures inside/outside the pool, doesn't blur easily, and has a quick shutter speed. I would also like to get something under 400$, Does anyone have a good waterproof megapixel camera as described above? Are you disappointed in any way? Are There any issues with it? Thank you in advance!

Answer
I'd also recommend Canon's Powershot D10 (their very first waterproof digital camera). It will give you better image quality and performance than one from Olympus, no question.

Have a read of the review below (group test of waterproof cameras). Make sure you read the 'Conclusions and Ratings' at the end of the test. You will see that the Canon D10 is top and The Pentax Optio W60 is next...forget Olympus.

Which digital camera is better?

erica l

I am looking to buy a digital camera and wanted to know which brand was overall the best. Please tell me what you think is the best. Thanks!!!

Olympus
Nikon
or Panasonic

Answer
Please post a new question. Tell us how much you want to spend, what you plan to use the camera for most of the time, and what your prior experience is with photography. With this information, we will be much more helpful to you.

This is somewhat out of date, but check this page for a general idea: http://tech.yahoo.com/rc/digital-cameras/103 Most cameras mentioned have been replaced with newer models, which we will hope are as good or better than what they replaced.

Here's another resource for you. Look on down the page if you are interested in point and shoot cameras instead of dSLR's. http://www.digitalcamerainfo.com/ratings.php

Here's another listing in order by ratings. They are only separated according to general groups, such as "Highly Recommended," etc. They are NOT listed within the groups according to higher rating. They are listed by date tested.
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/default.asp?view=rating

Consumer Reports from May 2007 has a short article on digital cameras and they recommend 10 different point and shoot cameras in the following order within groups according to camera design:
**COMPACTS**
Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX2 (Overall score 75) [$410]
Kodak EasyShare C875 (Overall score 73) [$165] - Rated better for shutter lag
Nikon Coolpix P4 (Overall score 65)
**SUBCOMPACTS**
Canon Powershot SD500 (Overall score 72)
Casio Exilim EX-Z850 (Overall score 72)
Sony Cybershot DSC-W50 (Overall score 70) [$180] [Similar to W55] - Rated better for shutter lag
Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX3 (Overall score 69) [$200] [Similar to FX-10, FX-12]
Olympus Stylus 720SW (Overall score 61) [Similar to 770SW - $360] (Waterproof)
**ADVANCED COMPACTS ("Near SLR")**
Fujifilm Finepix S6000fd (Overall score 77) [$300] - Rated better for shutter lag
Fujifilm Finepix E900 (Overall score 73) [$250]
[Things change so quickly in digital cameras that I can not find all of these models listed for sale and it's not even May yet. Prices are from B&H Photo, April 2007.]

Best (Underwater) Cameras?

Nicole

I've recently been interested in photography. My parents usually give me some kind of present for receiving Straight-As throughout the school year (a kind of expensive present) and this year, I've asked for a camera. I'm sure I can get Straight-As and I was wondering, what brands/specific cameras would be best for this particular criteria? (Things with *stars aren't necessities)

~Waterproof* (I live at the beach, but the water isn't at all clear, or clean, but it would still be cool to take underwater pictures)
~Reliable (Because it's highly unlikely I'll get my parents to buy me another camera before college, and obviously, during college I'll be on a tight budget, so...)
~$400 and below (Not sure if this is a necessity, but it would be best to be on the safe side. Knowing my parents, I can probably stretch it another hundred to 150$, so somewhere between 400 and 550.)
~A good camera (as in, has nice features and can take pictures to be proud of.)
~Good for Beginners (I truly hope this is obvious)

I'm pretty sure that's it. Hope this wasn't too bland and/or specific. Please let me know soon! Thank you! :)

Which waterproof camera should I buy?

sexybrunet

My camera now doesn't take good quality pictures & I thought it would be cool if I had a camera that took pics underwater without ruining the camera. I've looked at different choices & I'm trying to decide between a few choices. Olympus TG-310 Blue 14MP Digital Camera, Cyber-shot® Digital Camera TX10 or Canon PowerShot D10 12.1 MP Waterproof Camera 2.5-Inch LCD. Even know Sony's TX10 camera looks cool, I've heard a lot of bad reviews about it not being waterproof & stop working. I want a waterproof camera that will last or if you have any other suggestions for a waterproof camera, let me know! :)

Have never heard of a waterproof camera that didn't leak eventually. That said, my favorite is the Canon Powershot D10. You might want to look over these reviews.

waterproof digital camera?

thecooldea

I got a waterproof case for my camera cannon powershot a1100is. I got a hard case and in the dark it dont seem to take very good pics with the flash is that common. is it better to get a hard or soft case. I dont care much for the protection im pretty careful. Or should i just get a waterproof digital camera instead.

Answer
I recently bought myself a waterproof digi camera - and a few of my friends also have waterproof ones of different brands. It definitely depends on how much you are wanting to spend as to whether it's worth it or not.
I wouldn't reccomend the Fujifilm at all as photo quality is quite poor, you'd be better with a waterproof case just when you need it. The Sony tx5 is what I got, although the tx10 is now out and is even better. If you can afford to buy the Sony one, I certainly recommend it. I'm no photographer, but I've had a lot of people ask what camera my photos were taken on just because they have such lovely colour. The other waterproof one I'd recommend is the Panasonic DMC-TS3. Again, this camera takes great photos both in and out of the water.
The other waterproof ones I've tried I personally wouldn't buy, but in saying that you get what you pay for. They are more affordable.
I have only ever used a camera once with a hard case so can't really say much about them.

Hope that helps a little bit :)

Waterproof Camera Use?

Q. I am going to Florida in a few weeks and wanted to purchase a camera that I can use while in the ocean. I have looked around online but I'm not sure how reliable they are and I wanted to buy one that takes decent pictures both in and out of the water. Those that have used/purchased an under water camera can you tell me how well they work and its limits/quality? Maybe some brands you have used as well. It's just for my leisure while on vacation, not expecting to buy a high quality research camera. Thank you!

Waterproof camera for diving?

Salty

I am thinking of purchasing a waterproof camera for scuba diving less then 25m depth. I like a point and shoot camera and not particularly interested in the finer points. Should I get a waterproof case for my current camera and use that or spend around £100 on a specially designed waterproof camera.

Answer
100 pounds will be just about enough to buy a decent enough housing for your camera, providing one is made for it. Check the web site of your camera manufacturer to see if they have one to fit your particular model. Another source for a housing is Ike Lite http://www.ikelite.com/ . Use the charts there to see if your camera is listed. An Ikelite housing will cost a bit more than a camera manufacturer's housing since they are more robust and have a 200 foot depth rate, but they are good. I own one for my Canon.
As for amphibious cameras. These cameras are essentially all in one units. They come in a waterproof case in some models, they can't can't be removed from. Most decent ones will be rated for a 30M depth or a little more and have the ability to be removed from the housing.
It's doubtful you'll find an amphibious camera for 100 pounds that's decent. Good ones usually start at 150-200 pounds. Examples of this type of camera are Sea&Sea , Bonica and SeaLife. All are good manufacturers and offer a wide range of products.

Buy a housing for your current camera or buy an amphib? That's going to be a personal choice and budget thing. For myself, I chose the housing route because I really like my camera and it's functions. I couldn't find an amphib that matched it's performance. I also like NOT having to lug two cameras around, buy extra memory cards, spare batteries and the like.
Edit: Those 25 dollar cameras are the disposable film ones. They are also for the most part, limited to "16 feet" meaning they actually are good to 15 feet or two atmospheres. Great option if you don't intend to do more than a holiday pic but green, they ain't. The cases are recylcled as best they can but not 100%. Yup...you get a recycled camera and case that's fine for light duty use.
Bottom line with dive gear no matter what you're purchasing is:
You get what you pay for. There are no deals on quality equipment, just discounts for regular shop customers. Buy it online, expect online service. Buy it at a physical dive shop and if you're not happy you have a ton of options.
Ebay, I'd avoid like the plague. Uhh huh, saw some Russian rebreathers in there the other day that some idiots bid on. The next divers to die for a deal online and not the first.
What happened to "if it's too good to be true......."?
