What do you recomend is a good camcorder with night vision?

Dan A

I'm looking for a camcorder with good night vision to be able to set up on the back of my house to be able to look into my wooded backyard. It's more for entertainment just to see what kind of animals are out there so I'd prefer it to be outdoor model but doesn't have to be. I could take it inside when not in use, I guess. I prefer to keep it under $100. I just want something decent with good quality but not expensive.

Answer
I would consider Vivitar Mini DV Camcorder (DVR-510) with 2GB Internal Storage, Night Vision - Black

Infraraed Night Vision
Web Camera
SD Card Reader
Waterproof Casing

where could i get a cheap under water camera?

i'm a ligh

my birthday is coming up, on the 13th, but my dad is taking me to get one on the 12th. i can't spend anymore than $100, i was wondering what's a good brand, and where would they have them? would they have them at best buy?
thanks!
also, i'm looking online -- and if it says water proof, does that mean it can go under water?

Answer
Any camera that states it can be used underwater will have a depth rating, i..e how far under water it can go and still be expected to work. Most of the cheaper items are only good for 10ft-20ft/3.5-6.5m and that is assuming they don't get knocked.

Probably one of the cheapest will be something like a Vivitar 8426 , waterproof to 10ft/3m and 8mp.

If you already have a decent make of camera then you should be able to get a dive housings for it, they are made for most common makes of camera. Usually made of very strong plastic they replicate all/most of the buttons and are protected by single or double O-ring seals. Depth ratings range from 10ft to 200ft+ depedning upon price. In most cases you will pay as much or more for a decent underwater housing for a camera than you do the camera.

An alternative is a 'baggy' style housing, basically a strong double sealed plastic bag, usually good to 15ft or so.

we saw a boxing day ad for this camera but my husband thinks it might just be a regular digital camera with a 'waterproof' case. has anyone seen this camera in person? is the camera itself waterproof? we're having a hard time finding info on it online.

thanks.

Answer
the oly stylus 550wp is a waterproof camera, not a camera inside a clear case. it is similar, but less expensive than the stylus 8000 "tough".

i have this camera and like it very much. if you plan to use this in the water, i recommend you get the optional floatation strap. it will sink if you let go underwater and is only waterproof to 10 foot depth.

I don't specifically know that. Both adorama.com and bhphoto.com carry quite a bit of underwater housings and equipment. You might want to check their sites for a compatible combination.

How do you convert a regular digital camera into a waterproof camera?

Nicole

Do you have to buy an underwater camera/video housing?

Answer
You need a case or bag.

There are specialist cases made for many cameras that enable you to go deep...but they're incredibly expensive.
If you only want to go down to 30' or so then there are cases that fit all small cameras...

http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_ss_i_5_10?url=search-alias%3Delectronics&field-keywords=underwater+case&sprefix=underwater
Add your camera make and model to the search to get a more precise match.

i very much want to get a waterproof camera, but i don't know which one. i feel like i need more info on the cameras to make a good decision. i've been searching amazon and it comes between a couple.
im very interested in the new olympus 8010, but the cost is much greater than the canon d10.

i dont believe image quality will be an issue just reliability. plz anyone who has owned these cameras help me make a good choice that floats.

Answer
Although it's virtually crush-proof, the Tough 8010 is a new camera and is untested.

The Canon is last year's model but has been proven reliable. Another one you should consider is the Panasonic TS1. The casing is made of metal -- just like the Olympus Tough.

Check the link below for all the list of waterproof cameras in the market right now. Maybe you'll find one that fits your budget.

So, two questions: What kinds of options do I have regarding different cameras? And - Do you have any suggestions of cameras for me?

don't listen to the first polaroid is cheap and a good name. You can find them at stores near you really cheap, i did post a link in my source which is a polaroid 9.0 megapixel camera they have over 2000 of them so you can browse this is a good camera and way under $100 dollars.

What's the best type of video camera out now?

Abel

I was hoping to get a video camera for my birthday and i was wondering whats the best kind thats not higher than 250

Answer
Well as a cinematographer I have used a lot of cameras but it narrows down to only a few I'd suggest for under $250. First is Somy DCR-SX45, It's about $200. I am
currently using one of theses as a secondary camcorder that I take everywhere instead of taking my Canon XLH1 everywhere.
The second camera I'm gonna suggest is waterproof which is the Kodak Playsport (Zx5), about $159.00. I use this camera when skiing/snowboarding, canoeing/kayaking, swimming, and anytime it is suppose to rain.

So you're certainly in the ball-park!
Or from the Cities site: "...10 x 10*, $135 "
Ask about heat, mouse-proof [or insects], waterproof, locks and security cameras, do you have 24-hr access...?

Please post a new question. Tell us how much you want to spend, what you plan to use the camera for most of the time, and what your prior experience is with photography. With this information, we will be much more helpful to you.

Steve's reviews updates the "Best Camera" list periodically:
http://www.steves-digicams.com/best_cameras.html

This is somewhat out of date, but check this page for a general idea: http://tech.yahoo.com/rc/digital-cameras/103 Most cameras mentioned have been replaced with newer models, which we will hope are as good or better than what they replaced.

Here's another resource for you. Look on down the page if you are interested in point and shoot cameras instead of dSLR's. http://www.digitalcamerainfo.com/ratings.php

Here's another listing in order by ratings. They are only separated according to general groups, such as "Highly Recommended," etc. They are NOT listed within the groups according to higher rating. They are listed by date tested.
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/default.asp?view=rating

Consumer Reports from May 2007 has a short article on digital cameras and they recommend 10 different point and shoot cameras in the following order within groups according to camera design:
**COMPACTS**
Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX2 (Overall score 75) [$410]
Kodak EasyShare C875 (Overall score 73) [$165] - Rated better for shutter lag
Nikon Coolpix P4 (Overall score 65)
**SUBCOMPACTS**
Canon Powershot SD500 (Overall score 72)
Casio Exilim EX-Z850 (Overall score 72)
Sony Cybershot DSC-W50 (Overall score 70) [$180] [Similar to W55] - Rated better for shutter lag

Olympus Stylus 720SW (Overall score 61) [Similar to 770SW - $360] (Waterproof)
**ADVANCED COMPACTS ("Near SLR")**
Fujifilm Finepix S6000fd (Overall score 77) [$300] - Rated better for shutter lag

What is the best professional-grade digital camera for outdoor photography? I don't have too much money to spend, but I want it to take good action shots and have attachable/detachable lenses for different zoom options and stuff. So, if anyone knows of a professional outdoors camera for a good price, that would be great!

Answer
Professional cameras cost more than $2500, not including lenses. The recently announced Nikon D4 and Canon 1DX both are fully-weather sealed (not waterproof, just weatherproof...). A D4, once released, will cost you about 6 grand. This isn't a DSLR, but the Coolpix AW100 might be a good choice - It's a fully waterproof P&S camera and can withstand falls of about 5 feet.

In your price range, Nikon makes two such cameras.

Look at the Nikon Coolpix S31 (the newest) or the S30

Canon, Olympus and Pentax also make such underwater camera, but you will have to do some research to see if any fall within your budger

We will be going down no more then 25 ft a little under 1 atmosphere,
What camera under $50-$60 with a flash that will enhance colors, be best for this trip, we will be diving off the island of Freeport, Bahamas at around 8am to 1pm.. so the water will be fairly clear.. i have done some research online and just dont know what it is i should look for in a camera and what would be best at that depth.
Please Help..!!
Thank you in Advance :)

p.s.. $50 to $60 is what i want to spend, but i do not want to really go more then $100, it is not a camera i will use more then 2 or 3 times..

Answer
Honestly for that price you're looking at either renting something (if even available for that) or getting disposable camera's.

If you happen to have an Olympus digital, then you may find Oly makes an underwater case for them.

Alternatively you can try a generic underwater bag for any camera but I don't know if they're rated for 1 atm.

Geek Squad Camera Repair?

April

If there's anyone that had to get their camera fixed from Best Buy's 'Geek Squad' could you please tell me about how much it cost? My camera's inner screen is shattered and it has water damage. Its the Kodak Easy Share M575 model, if anyone has had to get either one of those things fixed, PLEASE tell me a price range! Thank you so much, and my price to get at least one fixed (at the moment) is around $40, if its more, then I'll just save up xD but I'm like $20 away from being able to get a new camera, but the one that is broken is 14 Mega Pixels, and the one I will be able to get in like 2 weeks is 12 Mega Pixels and is able to go underwater up to 10 ft. Its $60 and if you think I should just buy the new one, please say so! Thank you for reading my unessiary details xD ~April

Answer
Geek Squad are totally clueless about how to repair cameras or even where to send the cameras to repaired plus Geek Squad just loves to gives the Consumer a bunch of lame excuses on how the manufacture unable to go fix the cameras or even don't even know what had happened to the cameras that had been dropped off for repairs.

BTW: You're far better off getting a brand new camera because the cost to go get the camera repaired tends to be equal or greater than what the camera is really worth.

What are some good underwater cameras?

Bill Jense

I have a price range of no more than $450.
I don't have a camera, so I can't just buy an underwater housing.
When I say underwater camera, what I really mean is scuba diving camera, waterproof to at least 100 ft.

Answer
Latest waterproof cameras are quite good. On very rare occasions they come faulty, but the same is with regular digital cameras.
If you want camera, that makes good quality pictures on land or underwater, then I would suggest to look into these three cameras: Sony TX5, Panasonic Lumix TS2 and Olympus Rough 8010.
And all three of them cost less than $300 on Amazon.
You just need to decide which features you need more:
Sony TX5 is waterproof to 10 ft, when Panasonic TS2 and Olympus Rough 8010 are both waterproof to 33ft. And Sony TX5 has got the lowest resolution from these three. It's just 10.2 megapixels. Panasonic and Olympus have a resolution of 14MP, which is quite a great difference.
All cameras are shock-, dust-, sand- and freeze-proof. But Olympus 8010 is also a crushproof and designed to withstand a weight up to 220 pounds.
Sony TX5 gives you the opportunity to capture panoramic pictures with it's Sweep Panorama feature. Your images are automatically stitched together, which gives you the extra-wide view of the scenery.
Olympus 8010 has got the panoramic shooting option too. It also comes with a built-in 2GB memory, which is more than most cameras available on the market.
Panasonic TS2 has a good quality video recording. Although all these cameras record video in HD format. But Panasonic TS2 seems to be the most expensive out of them.
But if you do not need waterproof camera right now, Sony are releasing a new Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX10 in April 2011. It will have a resolution of impressing 16.2 megapixels. And it is going to be the first waterproof camera that can capture 3D still images. You can pre-order this camera and it costs $330.

Answer
I personally just came back from a holiday in Barcelona and used my Lowepro All-Weather Trekker AWII which was a gift

http://www.lowepro.com/products/backpack...

My situation was quite like yours!

I used it to carry my SLR, my compact and my 2 Lomos - LCA+ and Oktomat, and also a flash gun and 2 extra lenses - a macro and a telephoto. There is also a small zipper pocket in front to put stuff like guidebooks and waterproof zipper pockets inside for the more valuable stuff.
Also there is the option for me to fix a tripod to the back - very useful.

Overall the bag feels very lightweight and comfortable and i enjoyed carrying it around. However, as it was my first time going travelling with a backpack i found it not as easy to take my cameras out from the bag, change lenses, etc as when I was using a Crumpler toploader "pizza" sling bag before.

My toploader was big enough to fit my SLR with wide-angle lens and 2 more small compacts (think the LCA+ and my digital compact) once i played around with the velcro compartments. I could then put small items like my keys or wallet in the front velcro pouch. It was very convenient to whip out the cameras but it just lacks the space if you need it.

Hope this helps!

Lomography Camera Question?

~Miss_Rani

Okay so this may be a little long, just warning you!

First of all, I don't know if I should get the Hipstamatic App for the iPhone or just buy a Lomographic camera?

Also, how exactly does the lomographic camera work? Is it like a polaroid camera where it gives you a photo directly?

And a MAJOR question I have! If I buy a regular lomographic one (maybe the Diana F+), and buy a fisheye lens for it, will the fisheye lens work? What are the different measurements like 24 mm (idk exactly the numbers) stand for? Will it work for all?

And which lomographic camera do you recommend or equipment (lens, etc.) if I want a camera that can take regular pictures, fisheye pictures, AND be underwater? (UNDERWATER IS A MUST!)??

Thank you so much and please help me! :)

Answer
Well I was ready to start giving you some answers until you said UNDERWATER. Are you serious? NO lomo camera, and very few of ANY cameras are designed to function under water. There are a few point and shoot digital cameras available that are waterproof. Any DSLR type of camera requires a VERY EXPENSIVE underwater housing for this type of thing. There is no such thing in existence for any kind of lomo camera.

Olympus and Pentax make quite nice point and shoot digital cameras that function under water, but they are in the three to four hundred dollar price range.

You're best off to do a little research on the camera you really want and then see if there's a decent underwater housing for it. Personally, I'd steer clear of the actual camera manufacturer's housings. They tend not to allow use of all the camera functions and they are usually only just good enough that they can claim a depth rating of 130ft max. You're better off protecting that camera investment by purchasing a decent housing like an IkeLite ( if it's available for your camera). They're rated to 200 feet and each is factory tested to pass that. I own a Canon A720IS, that canon does make the housing for, but it was so cheaply made that I opted for the IkeLite housing instead. That housing cost TWICE as much as the actual camera. But I know the camera is safe and that model does everything I want in a camera, both above and below.
As for amphibs ( cameras that are in their own housing such as Sea&Sea, or Bonica) I'd advise against unless you don't mind lugging a large housing around on the surface or what your photos will actually look like. Amphibs are a compromise solution. They don't take great above water shots and they don't take great underwater shots. They do both only "ok" as opposed to a higher end camera that you put in a higher end housing.
When you're looking for a camera, keep a few things in mind.
What's it's power consumption like? Changing batteries is impossible on a dive.
What's it's storage format and capacity? You can't swap out cards on a dive.
How easy is it to point and shoot? You're looking through a housing with a mask on your face, can you see what you're aiming at?
You may be wearing gloves when diving. Can you manipulate those function buttons on the housing easily?
What are the options for adding things like strobes, lens or video lights later? What about the actual camera modes? You may find yourself doing macro or wide angle pics. Maybe at night? Maybe in low vis....that onboard flash can then be your worst enemy since you may not have an option to disable it and all you'll get is backscatter.
My advice... choose ten cameras that do what it is that you intend on doing. Find out if a dedicated manufacturer of dive camera housings makes a housing for those cameras. Then choose from between the ones that do.

What is the best tough subcompact digital camera?

You know the type, waterproof up to about 10 meters, scratch-resistant, crack-resistant. You know, butterfingers-proof.
My other option is the Fujifilm Fine Pix Z30, which is the only camera that met my requirements outside of this category.

Answer
The Canon D10 is the best for this, it's even freezeproof. There is also the Panasonic camera, of which I can't remember the name of. It's on their website though.

How much does a waterproof camera cost?

I want a waterproof camera so I can film stuff underwater :p
I'm looking for a regular camera, nothing professional. Like a Cool Pix or something .... Lol, but waterproof! About under $200 if so. And also, if I can't afford anything over $200, how much are waterproof CASES?

LAST QUESTION! If I can't get a waterproof camera or case, are there any ways to make my camera waterproof, or things to put it in? Thank you!

Answer
My waterproof camera cost about 125$. It was money well spent. I've had it for a year now and it's great and works wonderfully. You can buy a
camera WITH a case, like I did. You can find little kids underwater cameras for a lot cheaper but they don't work quite as well.

Any girls/women explain this to me?

underwater camera yacht on Fishing Camera Boat Promotion-Shop for Promotional Fishing Camera Boat ...
underwater camera yacht image

We (my girlfriend, her sister and I) were watching this really bad action movie the other night.

Near the end, there is this scene on a big yacht, and there's a scene with this woman and this fat, older guy. The guy was always perving on the young woman, and tried to force himself on her earlier in the movie.
In this scene they are standing by the side of the yacht. She is kissing him, and rubbing his crotch with her hand, getting him all horny. She suddenly pushes him over the side of the boat, and he falls into the shark infested waters.

The next camera shot is underwater, and a shark swims up from below, and you can clearly see that it attacks/bites the guy between his spread legs, obviously biting off his wiener and nuts.
Two guys run to the railing as if to help him. The woman who pushed him laughs and says "Just leave him. He's no good to anyone now. Let them eat him", and she stands there watching. The guy is of course screaming from being bitten between the legs, and the woman blows him a kiss and laughs. Another shark comes in and pulls him under and they eat him.

Both my girlfriend and her sister laughed at the scene where the shark attacks the guy's crotch, but they also laughed at the woman's reaction and what she said?

Would you laugh as well? What the heck is so funny about it???

I wasn't offended by their laughing. I just want to know if other girls understand why they might have laughed?

Answer
Aw lol, well they probably found it funny because it was unexpected, and sometimes a guy getting hurt down there can be funny. As for the womans reaction, its funny because she doesn't care about him, she just led him on a bit I guess. Its just a movie though,

Were we being too mean?

My boyfriend got upset, saying that the woman was evil, and that the guy didn't deserve it.
We told him it was just a movie, and he was a bad guy anyway.

Would you laugh as well? Were we being insensitive?

Which part of the scene do you think is funnier?

Recommend a decent digital camera?

waterproof digital camera shutter lag on Fujifilm X20 Compact Digital Camera | Silver | Devon Camera
waterproof digital camera shutter lag image

john_stolw

I am looking for a decent, inexpensive digital camera for my son. My primary concerns are durability and shutter lag. One that we've been looking at is the Canon A470. Any experiences with this one or can anyone suggest another?

Answer
Any Canon digital camera is your better choice. The Canon SD1100 is a good choice.
It's a lot cheaper than it's successor for the 2009 line, the SD1200. (i'm not sure i should reccommend this one!) The SD1200 is around $250, yes, it is a bit more pricey than the SD1100, but if looks is a concern, the colors for this one are so much more attractive...10Mp, waterproof up to (i wanna say 10 feet? not sure) and the images will be stellar. I understand if you'd be reluctant to show your son the camera online...the colors are so tempting!

P.S. Good job for looking at canon! It will always take the better picture! Hahah!

Which digital camera would you suggest buying?

I'm looking to spend less than $150, but will go up to $200 if necessary. I'm just looking for the best camera I can get for a low price. Which digital camera would you suggest and why?
Thanks! :)
Answers are great so far! Just a couple more details on what I'm looking for : small, easy to carry, used mostly to take pictures of outings (more people than scenary, but probably that too). Thanks! :)

Answer
Some of our best answerers always recommends the Fujifilm FinePix F20 camera as the best-for-less choice. I have to say that I like the sample images at Steve's site (below). If Morey000 or SpaceCowboy show up after me and make this recommendation, choose them as the best answer, because I'm just passing along their suggestion. I have no personal experience with this camera. I see it at B&H Photo (available through Yahoo! Shopping) for $150; $190 with a 1 GB Sandisk memory card.

My brother has the A540 and my mother-in-law has the A530 - on my recommendation - and neither one has stopped speaking to me yet. Based on this and experience with other Canon Powershot cameras, I am now recommending the A550 as a nice and relatively inexpensive camera.

Canon just introduced the A550, which has more pixels, but offers less user control. I'd be happy with the A540, but the A550 is probably also worth considering, especially since the A540 has been discontinued. I've seen it for $140 in some stores like WalMart and Target.

The A550 costs $160 at B&H and, of course, you'll need a memory card.

Steve's reviews updates the "Best Camera" list periodically:
http://www.steves-digicams.com/best_cameras.html

Consumer Reports from May 2007 has a short article on digital cameras and they recommend 10 different point and shoot cameras in the following order within groups according to camera design:
**COMPACTS**
Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX2 (Overall score 75) [$410]
Kodak EasyShare C875 (Overall score 73) [$165] - Rated better for shutter lag
Nikon Coolpix P4 (Overall score 65)
**SUBCOMPACTS**
Canon Powershot SD500 (Overall score 72)
Casio Exilim EX-Z850 (Overall score 72)
Sony Cybershot DSC-W50 (Overall score 70) [$180] [Similar to W55] - Rated better for shutter lag
Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX3 (Overall score 69) [$200] [Similar to FX-10, FX-12]
Olympus Stylus 720SW (Overall score 61) [Similar to 770SW - $360] (Waterproof)
**ADVANCED COMPACTS ("Near SLR")**
Fujifilm Finepix S6000fd (Overall score 77) [$300] - Rated better for shutter lag
Fujifilm Finepix E900 (Overall score 73) [$250]

[Things change so quickly in digital cameras that I can not find all of these models listed for sale and it's not even May yet. Prices are from B&H Photo, April 2007.]
