What camera is efficient both underwater and out of water? tough camera or housing?

Bonnie Bul

I am looking to buy a camera for preferably under 650USD. I want to use it for snorkeling and shallow diving, but also have it to use as a regular camera that takes good photos-maybe with the option of manual exposure. Is it better to buy an underwater camera like Olympus Tough or Panasonic Lumix DMC-FT3, or to buy a decent camera and get underwater housing for it? What cameras would you suggest?

Answer
An underwater housing is going to have a depth advantage to a Tough camera. But having that, here is my story.

I had a FantaSea housing (about $100) for my Nikon S200 - a run of the mill $150 camera. So the total cost was about equivalent to a tough camera.

The housing had a 100meter depth, far more than I needed as I never scuba - only snorkel. My wife and I go on cruises in the Caribbean, so having something waterproof is desirable.

But the housing was a bit large and bulky. It was always a pain. So for that reason, we never took the camera/housing with us unless we were going snorkeling for sure.

Then we were in the Bahamas one day. I took my underwater camera, and my wife's Nikon S560 to the beach. I was taking photos with the Nikon S560 as it is easier to use on-shore than the underwater camera. While I could have removed the camera from the underwater housing to do this, it was just easier to use a second camera.

But I then put my wife's camera in the front pocket of my swim trunks and forgot about it... until after I finished snorkeling.

Yep - scratch one camera.

We replaced that camera with a Nikon S570.

Then about 6 months later, on another cruise. Same swim trunks, we were at the pool on the ship, and yep, scratch camera #2 after I went into the pool.

Then we finally got wise, and I bought an Olympus Tough 8010. Since then I have not killed any more cameras.

However, compared to the underwater housing:

The Olympus is rated for 10Meters, the underwater housing 100Meters.
You have to rinse the Olympus off after getting it wet - you don't have to with the housing.
The Olympus is more convenient as the underwater housing is bulky.
The photo quality is about the same with the Olympus as the camera that went into the housing.
The Olympus is NOT inconvenient to use on land.

I ended up selling the housing as I didn't use it after buying the Olympus.

So long story short, unless you have a depth requirement of 100Meters, a Tough is a good choice.

Buying underwater camera?

Ling

I do not want a disposable camera. I want a camera for a teenager, just for fun.
Price range: 50-200$
Quality: Good-excellent
This is for a vacation to go underwater with, nothing more.
Can someone send me a link of one?

Answer
There are very few "underwater" cameras in this price range that are any good. Even though the $300 Canon D10 IS is considered one of the best (possibly the best in terms of image quality) it can't compare to a more advanced camera with an underwater housing. Underwater photography also comes with its own set of "rules" because the way light behaves changes underwater. See if you can find a used D10 IS, then be sure to check the seals. NOTE: This camera is NOT rated for anything below 33 feet underwater!!! For that depth you will need an underwater housing for whatever camera you have.

Digital camera recommendations for a 6 year old kid?

MSC

My kid shows quite a bit of interest in my camera and photography when I'm taking pics. And I chanced upon this article "Getting your kids started with taking digital photos" at http://www.hp.com/united-states/consumer/digital_photography/take_better_photos/tips/kids-getting-started.html. This got me thinking of buying a kid friendly camera, as described in this article for my kid.

I've a top range DSLR and wouldn't prefer to share that with a kid. So you experts out there, can you recommend a digital camera for a kid that is:

1. Suitable for a 6.5 year old
2. Cheap enough (prefer under $100)
3. Meets the recommended guidelines of the article, viz.
* Is small, so your child can hold it easily
* Has fully automatic settings
* Can turn itself off automatically
* Is simple to use and has easy options for transferring pictures
* Is durable-just in case

Recommendations along with your own experience introducing photography to kids would be appreciated.
Edit: It'd be a big help if you will also give a price indication, link to find more details, and why you think that model is good for a kid.

Answer
Olympus makes a somewhat shock-proof camera that will withstand a drop of a couple of feet and is somewhat waterproof, but I believe it's out of your price range.

I found a Polaroid digicam (I think it's i630 maybe) on sale for under $50. I plan to give it to our granddaughter on her 7th birthday. Right now she is using an old p&s Nikon One-touch (film) I have no idea how this camera will hold up, cheap digicams are rather delicate. Fisher Price makes a kid friendly digicam, and Staples has a Crayola Kid camera in stock. Realistically, any child that age (and some adults) will have to have some amount of supervision in using a real camera to make sure they don't leave it outside in the rain or trade it for a Yugioh card or some such thing that seems like a good idea at the time. A child will probably not have much trouble learning how to use the camera and download their images. I think it is a great idea, get 'em started young!

Both my grandchildren (6 and 8) have some interest in photography. Our granddaughter is quite a critic. She can point out a good picture from a poor one in a heartbeat. She usually has at least 20 keepers from a 24 exposure roll, and her photos rarely suffer from camera shake. She doesn't know much about composition or exposure, but she usually can identify nice lighting when she sees it. The grandson likes to use my D80 and tries to capture animals and birds. He had a blast at the zoo shooting all the snakes and reptiles. He is not as interested as she is, though. They both recognise a "photo-op" when they see one, and continually suggest things Grandma might have missed. Mine have always seen Grandma with a camera attached to her face, and have spent lots of hours surfing photography sites with me and looking at out photo albums. They probably think everyone shoots several hundred frames a month, so it is normal that they might be interested in photography.

With digital, kids can snap as much as they want. Teach them first how to focus, how to smoothly press the button, and hold the camera still. Some digicams no longer have a viewfinder (bad thing) It is much easier to hold the camera steady if you are pressing it against your forehead and looking through the finder. Learn them good technique to begin with to get sharp images. Do be in the habit of looking together at the photos, and gently point out why picture A might be a better capture than B. Discuss the angle and how the light was striking subjects. Look at magazines and point out beautiful photos when you see them. Kids usually have a unique take on photography and can be very creative. You never know what they will find intriguing. Photography will open up a lasting line of communication and understanding. Enjoy!

Tough Digital Camera for Company Use?

Ms.Know It

I am looking for a tough cheap digital camera that will withstand lots of dropping and rough handling. Does anyone have a suggestion on what to get? I am not looking for one that is for children such as the Kid Tough camera. This will be used in a working (shipping) environment in a warehouse.
I would like to stay around $250 - no more.
The pictures do not have to be great quality - we are not using them for print - its only for us to use in case of a claim. We just need to take photos of stuff loaded on a truck.

Answer
The Olympus Stylus 720 SW is water resistent and shock resistent. It can be dropped from five feet, or go five meters under water. That should be enough! It's $400, but it looks like it's a pretty good camera.

For your price range, you might just want to get either a cheap waterproof digital camera like the Pentax Optio W30, or at least get a camera that doesn't have a lense stick out of the body, since that's what people usually damage when they drop it.

OLYMPUS waterproof, shockproof cameras: Good buy or not?

mariajay

To those who owns this kind of camera, please share your reviews...Thanks

Answer
I know Olympus has 2 models for shockproof and waterproof.

1) Stylus 1030. It has very tough body and good picture. Shockproof up 6.6 feet and waterproof up to 33 feet and also freeze proof.

2)Stylus 1050. This one replace the Stylus 1030 and this cost a little bit more. 1050 doesn't have tough looking body but still do the same job. Shockproof only to 5 feet and waterproof up to 10 feet.

Amazon has it for really cheap
Here is the link to the Stylus 1030s

I want a new professional camera, with the best features, but I don't know which one to get.

Do they have waterproof too? how can u make a camera waterproof??

Answer
You obviously don't understand what a professional camera is. The D4 will be on store shelves in a few months for a modest 6 grand.

What camera is best for my situation?

Alicia

My husband and I are missionaries going to the Congo in Africa (jungle) for the next few years. I am looking for a water resistant, shock resistant camera (very humid environment). I need one that will focus on close ups of items without it blurring or making the objects further away in focus. My current camera is a standard digital camera but it does not focus on close objects and it is not water resistant. The camera will also need to be able to use a memory card so I can email pictures of my daughter back home to the states. Bonus points if it records videos as well.

Answer
I don't know why Jim A continues to tell people that there's no such thing as a shock resistant camera. Just search for "shockproof camera" on Amazon. There's dozens of them!

Try the Panasonic DMC-FT4 or DMC-TS4 as it's called in the USA. It's waterproof to 12 meters, shockproof for a 2 meter fall, freezeproof to -10 celcius and dustproof. It's got the macro closeup facility you want and uses standard SDHC memory cards. And it records full HD 1080p video. Even underwater!

Review here with a few other waterproof cameras: http://www.lenstip.com/134.5-article-Waterproof_cameras_test_2012_-_part_I_Panasonic_Lumix_DMC-FT4.html

I would advise buying and testing it well before you leave. The biggest recurring complaint I see with waterproof cameras is that they have quality control problems, meaning you don't always get a good waterproof one. It's not the easiest piece of equipment to make because the rubber waterproof seals are quite difficult to design install in a way that guarantees that water can't get in. Usually if they work then they do continue to work well for several years, but it's easy to end up with a duff one.

The problem with closeup macro work is that when you are very close to an object, your depth of field (the amount in focus) is not very great, so things behind the subject do tend to be out of focus. That's just part of the physics of photography.

You can compensate a bit by setting the camera into aperture-priority mode and setting a small aperture, but that in turn means using slower shutter speeds, so you are more likely to introduce blur through camera shake (unless you use a tripod) or through the object moving.

You can compensate for slow shutter speeds a bit by increasing the ISO setting, but that tends to add more "noise" to the image.

This balance of shutter speed, aperture size and ISO setting is at the core of all photography. To get a lot in focus with macro pictures you need a lot of light, a lens which stops down to very small apertures and which focuses close up and a good tripod. That's only really achievable with a Digital SLR camera with dedicated macro lens - and that isn't cheap.

Often the best macro shots are obtained by deliberately throwing everything completely out of focus except for the main object.

Best Waterproof Digital Camera?

gawsh

I want a digital camera that takes high quality, clear pictures and is water proof. I had the Olypmus Tough 6020 and the image quality wasn't great at all and it was 14MP!!

What about the Sony Cybershot TX5?

Answer
from all the reviews i read there are only 3 you should consider for picture quality.
canon d10 - 12mp, 3x zoom. 640x320 video, @$249
panasonic lumix ts2 - 14mp, 6x zoom, 720p high def video, @$269
panasonic lumix ts3 - 12mp, 6x zoom, 1080p high def video, gps, @$349 (estimate, available in march)
the canon picture is slightly better but the lumix video is better.
i have the lumix ts2, it takes great pictures and the video is sweet. i also dropped it on an icy road and accidentally kicked it into the snow bank my first time out with it. no harm done.
the sony has a lower picture quality than those three and if i'm not mistaken it has a sliding cover on the front that tends to trap sand and dirt when closed causing grinding.

In need of a waterproof digital camera that shoots great quality pictures.?

Destiny

I am going to the Caribbean and need to get an affordable waterproof camera that takes high quality pictures underwater and above. I'll be diving and snorkeling so the farther the depth of the camera the better. I want it to be inexpensive so $150 at most. I'll only be using it this one time so I don't want to spend much. Anybody know of any?

Answer
I also suggest you Kodak C123 for such a price. Or if you have a compact digital already, DiCAPac waterproof pouches.

Add some accessories

Any one know anything about waterproof cameras?

Searra

I want to buy a waterproof camera for a project I am doing. I honestly don't know much about them or where to get one. I really don't want to spend a lot but I want a great camera for amazing photos and I am willing to change my price range which the highest at the moment being $600. it would be great if you could tell me about them, where to get them, what is the best to use, etc. I would really appreciate it.

Answer
There are inexpensive waterproof cameras that cost as little as $125 like the Nikon Coolpix S31.

There is a Nikon Coolpix AW-110 which includes GPS, WiFi and can operate deeper than the S31. 18 m for 60 minutes vs. 5 m for an unspecified time

Sure, you can buy a $300 P&S camera and a $300 underwater housing, but then you will have your underwater camera in two pieces that must be combined when you dive.

Canon, Olympus, Pentax also make such underwater cameras. The cool thing is that they are also shockproof and cold weather proof in some cases.

Spend some time on those websites and see which of those companies make the camera that is best for you

Pentax WG-3 gps vs Canon D20 ,waterproof cameras ,which one to buy? Why ?

Jolan

I wanna shot video mostly

Answer
Waterproof cameras scare me because I hear FAR too often about leaks, even when they are brand new.

Apparently it is very easy to catch a tiny hair or some other object in one of the seals (e.g. the battery / memory card door), and that is enough to let water in.

I'd suggest buying extra warranty protection and trying it out pretty much right away if you intend to go swimming with it.

Unless you pay a LOT of money, your waterproof camera will be a little P&S, so don't expect miracles from it - the quality of most shots will be so-so at best.

I'd also suggest reading reviews..... all you have to do is use Google for that.

P.S. Feel free to use "please" or "thank you" when you ask for help .... good manners are such a lovely thing.

which camera is the best one in 2007?

rohithxyz

Or shall I ask the circuit city and best buy camera people

Answer
Best for what?

Please post a new question. Tell us how much you want to spend, what you plan to use the camera for most of the time, and what your prior experience is with photography. With this information, we will be much more helpful to you.

Steve's reviews updates the "Best Camera" list periodically:
http://www.steves-digicams.com/best_cameras.html

This is somewhat out of date, but check this page for a general idea:

http://tech.yahoo.com/rc/digital-cameras/103 Most cameras mentioned have been replaced with newer models, which we will hope are as good or better than what they replaced.

Here's another resource for you. Look on down the page if you are interested in point and shoot cameras instead of dSLR's.

http://www.digitalcamerainfo.com/ratings.php

Here's another listing in order by ratings. They are only separated according to general groups, such as "Highly Recommended," etc. They are NOT listed within the groups according to higher rating. They are listed by date tested.
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/default.asp?view=rating

Consumer Reports from May 2007 has a short article on digital cameras and they recommend 10 different point and shoot cameras in the following order within groups according to camera design:

**COMPACTS**
Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX2 (Overall score 75) [$410]
Kodak EasyShare C875 (Overall score 73) [$165] - Rated better for shutter lag
Nikon Coolpix P4 (Overall score 65)
**SUBCOMPACTS**
Canon Powershot SD500 (Overall score 72)
Casio Exilim EX-Z850 (Overall score 72)
Sony Cybershot DSC-W50 (Overall score 70) [$180] [Similar to W55] - Rated better for shutter lag
Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX3 (Overall score 69) [$200] [Similar to FX-10, FX-12]
Olympus Stylus 720SW (Overall score 61) [Similar to 770SW - $360] (Waterproof)
**ADVANCED COMPACTS ("Near SLR")**
Fujifilm Finepix S6000fd (Overall score 77) [$300] - Rated better for shutter lag
Fujifilm Finepix E900 (Overall score 73) [$250]
[Things change so quickly in digital cameras that I can not find all of these models listed for sale and it's not even May yet. Prices are from B&H Photo, April 2007.]

What Are Some Recommendations For The Best Portable Video Cameras?

mrfrudd200

I would like to get some recommendations of the best portable and less expensive video/audio recorders for mainly making online type videos and tutorials. The camera could use SD cards for data storage, USB jump drives, etc. Also the audio quality is very important, so the ability to use an external microphone that can be plugged into the camera's audio port would be a plus.

There are so many products on the market now, it is a bit overwhelming. Thanks for any help and links.

Answer
Get the Kodak PlaySport Zx3, it's a Consumer Reports recommended choice. Good quality pic, easy on the checking account, cute to look at, different colors available, perfect for YT videos.

Highs
Good HD pocket camcorder with very good video pic quality, waterproof to 1 meter, display quality and user-friendly; good pic in low light, pic stable, versatile and works like a digicam too (5 Mpixel). Won't vaporize your checking account. Different colors.

Lows
Average audio and battery life.

If you have around 500$ to spend, the Sony HDR-CX110 is a good mid-end that does a good job, is a Consumer Reports' "BEST BUY".

What is a good digital camera for under $200?

InMyOwnLit

I love photography. I've only ever been able to use disposables though. I want a digital for taking pictures of mainly the woods behind my house. Trees, flowers, insects, stuff like that. Also occasionally of my pets & maybe family. I'd love it to be waterproof & take decent video & audio. I know I'm asking for a lot but its just going to be a hobby/beginner camera. I need clear picture clarity.

I have to pay for this camera myself & sense I don't have a job & had to save up allowance forever that's why it has to be under $200. Later on when I have a job I'll get a better camera. Are the Fujifilm cameras any good? I've read both some good & bad reviews on them. What camera do you think is best to fit my needs? ^_^

Answer
I would consider Canon PowerShot SD1300 IS 12.1 MP Digital Camera
* 28mm wide-angle lens; 4x optical zoom and Optical Image Stabilizer
* Smart AUTO mode intelligently selects from 18 predefined settings
* 12.1-megapixel resolution allows you to print large size images with clarity and detail
* Clear 2.7-inch PureColor System LCD
* Shoot in Low Light mode for dimly-lit situations

Best waterproof camera that runs on AA batteries?

hunter

I know i already asked what the best waterproof camera is but since im going to be doing the NOLS program there will be no electricity to charge it so whats the best of the best waterproof camera that runs on batteries? something under 1,000$

Answer
Most quality digital cameras don't run on AA batteries these days. Instead they run on camera specific lithium ion or lithium poly batteries which hold much more charge and energy, thus lasting longer. I would suggest just buying several batteries if you aren't going off for THAT long of a time. It is more practical and has more uses. What happens when the trip is over?

The other option would be to buy several waterproof disposable cameras.

I would recommend the SD1100IS over the SD750 because it has image stabilization (reduces picture blur from camera shake), has face recognition, and comes in a slightly smaller size make it more pocketable.

Almost all of the canon powershot line has a waterproof case made especially for it by Canon. There are other waterproof cases that you can use, but they are less trustworthy.

If the pictures are just for fun, try getting a disposable waterproof camera.

Hope this helps. Good luck!

digital camera-help! Going on expedition...?

outdoor gi

I've always had a big camera due to being a yearbook and newspaper photographer. Now, however, I'm going on an expedition in Alaska this summer and need a more smaller camera. It needs to be somewhat water resistant if there is such a thing. Big buttons are preferred due to gloves. And it needs to take decent pictures...I suppose point and shoot is ok, if there's not a nice, lite, good camera out there that's easy to use and carry when backpacking or kayaking. OH battery life is VERY important...I will have to pack them in and won't get more until after the trips over...75 days. A good Zoom would be nice to have for animals. My old faithful camera (more like a dinosaur digital...one of the first) died last summer and with all the choices now, well, it's hard to decide from pictures online. What do you think? Have any good tips or suggestions? I'll take anything. If you've found a bad one then let me know so I can mark one off my list. Thanks for all the help!
what about the Olympus Stylus 1030 SW? Anyone? Are they out yet? That looks like an amazing camera if it does what they say it does. Anything similar to that? http://www.olympusamerica.com/cpg_section/product.asp?product=1363
I have a Cannon EOS 20 D here at home, but I need one that's not as heavy for this trip. I'd like to have a viewfinder, but nowadays it's hard to find a little one with it. During the 75 days, I will not be in contact with anyone other than my group and no power source except sunlight, but I don't mind carrying batteries.

Answer
I would also look at the Pentax W30 as an alternative camera similar to the Olympus you cite.

Quite honestly, I still think you should consider an SLR like a Nikon D200 or Nikon D300, plus a good zoom lens like an 18-200mm. However, it's probably outside your price range. But it will do wide angle to long telephoto, and the D200/D300 are weather sealed (though not waterproof).

Another low cost option: A Canon A570 IS (about $155) and a Canon underwater housing for it (about $120). When you're near water, you can put it in the housing and protect it but still use it. 4x zoom, so it's slightly more zoom than the typical 3x zoom. Uses easy to find AA batteries. I would carry Sanyo Eneloops, which will hold their charge over the 75 days without self discharging. I would also suggest some way to charge batteries, like a solar panel, car lighter output and a charger that has a car lighter adapter. Otherwise, you will have to pack lots of eneloops in order to make up for the fact you can't charge batteries. How many to carry depends upon how heavily you use the camera and view photos. With light usage, you might get by with 10 batteries (5 pairs). Medium usage, about I would suggest 10 pairs (20 batteries). Above that, you begin to look at the weight issue of more batteries vs. having a mechanism to charge them.

Based on the battery issue, I would seriously consider the Canon A570 and the underwater housing, because the other cameras require a special lithium battery, which means you'll have to buy a bunch of them. The Sanyo Eneloops are cheaper, plus if anyone else has AA's, you can use those.

EDIT:
Based on your latest post, I would definitely suggest the Canon A570 IS and some kind of waterproof housing. The Canon does have an optical viewfinder as well as the LCD. You can take the camera out of the waterproof housing when you're safely someplace dry and use the optical viewfinder to conserve power. And the battery to take would be the AA Sanyo Eneloops.

What's the best way to take great photos from a kayak?

I love photography & also flat water kayaking and very much want to merge my two favorite hobbies. I have a Nikon D5100, but not sure there's a safe way to take it out with me, so I'm wondering if there's a casing I can use or if I should buy a compact waterproof camera just for kayaking. I'd definitely prefer my D5100 because of it's amazing photo quality & zoom, but I do not want to risk damaging it.
When we go kayaking, we spend a great deal of time just relaxing and enjoying nature. It's not a race

Answer
Don't know about that model but I do know you can get cases for some Nikon's. Failing that is probably safest to paddle a canoe (nice and stable and room to manoeuvre), wrap you camera in a waterproof bag or peli-type case and then just take it out when you want to shoot some pics. Or as you say get a waterproof camera - either use stand alone or get a mount and fix it to your boat or wear a helmet and fix it to that.

Waterproof digital camera?!?

Genevieve

I really want a waterproof digital camera for my birthday this year. I have been looking online and have found almost every camera has at least a few bad reviews to go along with however many positive ones they may have. I have a budget of 500 at this point, willing to spend more if necessary though. So I was wondering if anyone has any personal experience with waterproof cameras? Or have a friend that has? I'm just really looking for some advise here. Thank you for reading and your possible help :)

Answer
The thing about the internet is you will always find bad reviews on anything. What I like to do is to take the "Olympics" scoring approach to reviews. Throw out both the highest and lowest reviews, and what is left over is probably more accurate.

I have the Olympus Tough 8010, and it has worked well for me. Not all waterproof cameras are created equal, and perhaps the most significant difference is the waterproof depth rating. The waterproof cameras are usually rated for 1 Meter, 5 Meters, or 10 Meters in depth. Any deeper and you will need to go with a housing type camera.

One thing you have to do with waterproof cameras is to rinse them off after use.

Another thing to look for in a waterproof camera is underwater color balance. When underwater, even only a few feet, you will get a blue hue to the photos. A red filter or underwater color balance feature is required to bring the photo back to the correct color. The Olympus has this function as well, but I suspect others do too.

The Canon D10 is another camera that has good reviews.

Some, but not all of the waterproof cameras are also Tough, and are shockproof, freezeproof, and chrushproof (of course within limits).

I bought my Olympus after seeing a review of it thrown into a washing machine at the laundromat and it took a video of it being tossed around. So far, it has worked well.

waterproof cameras for under $200 ?

Hillary

i need a camera that is under $200. The lens CANT roll out. my previous camera broke because the lens were smushed in. it also needs to be waterproof. it doesnt need to be amazing quality but i would like it to be nice and clear. im a teen so i would like it to look nice and cute(: THANK YOU !

Since there is little difference, just google for models and prices and pick one you like.

Good waterproof/underwater digital camera, $200 or under?

Melody:)

I've been looking for a waterproof/underwater digital camera online. I've found them as low as the low 100's with horrible reviews. The only one I've found with good reviews is the Olympus - Stylus Tough 14.0-Megapixel and it's $300, which I cant afford. (I'm 15, it's an early birthday present from my mom so I can have it in time to go on vacation)

Could someone please recommend me one with good picture quality above and under water, that's no more than $200?

-thanks:)
