For a cheap waterproof camera which is better Olympus TG 310 or Panasonic FT10?

Little_Tig

I only want the kind of cheapest one, im going on holidays and wanna take some underwater videos and photos with my little cousins. doesn't have to be excellent quality, as long as its not shocking image resolution and as long as it doesn't let any water in i'm fine with that.

Bing Lee is selling the Olympus for $179 now, down from $199, which is the same as the panasonic.

So i'm thnking i'll get the olymus.

Has anybody here owned either of the cameras that could tell me whether they are any good and whether they have had any problems with them
thanks

Answer
Waterproof cameras scare me because I hear FAR too often about leaks, even when they are brand new.

Apparently it is very easy to catch a tiny hair or some other object in one of the seals (e.g. the battery / memory card door), and that is enough to let water in.

I'd suggest buying extra warranty protection and trying it out pretty much right away if you intend to go swimming with it.

Unless you pay a LOT of money, your waterproof camera will be a little P&S, so don't expect miracles from it - the quality of most shots will be so-so at best.

I have a very similar Olympus camera (a slightly older version of this one). It works ok in great light, but is very noisy in low light conditions. The features/settings are limited, but some of the scenes are fun to play with as long as you're not a serious photographer expecting top quality.
I never dared to actually put it UNDER water :-(

The Best Brand For Waterproof Digital Cameras?

Chris

I would like a camera that can sustain weather-related obstacles like rain, snow, etc. I want a camera that is 10 Mega Pixels or higher, can capture video, and is between the range of $100 - $250. (Image Stabilization is a plus)

I would like to know what brand can supply me with a camera equal to the features i want or a camera alone that any of you may recommend.

Thank You For All Of Your Answer(s)

Answer
Dpreview recently tested waterproof cameras

The Canon D10 came out on top, but it is over your budget.
Pentax W60 was second, and within budget, but it lacks image stabilization.

any suggestions for good waterproof digital camera?

xoxoRileyx

I am looking into buying a waterproof digital camera. I want to be able to take picture under water on vacation. And good suggestions that aren't too pricey? I was looking at the Olympus TG-310 Blue 14MP Digital Camera Bundle w/ 3.6x Optical Zoom, 2.7" LCD Display, Waterproof on walmart.com and it looks good. Also if I go into salt water with it, will the salt ruin it? I also want it to take good clear picture on dry land.

Answer
Take Panasonic TS3, I have tested this camera, review is below

Great quality photo camera?

teganholdw

I've just won a competition and landed up with $2000 prize money, I've always wanted a really nice camera (digital) but unsure what I should looking for or brands etc...

I want a camera that can capture pictures quickly like they do in photoshoots... my current small digi takes at least a second to press the button and hold it down until it takes the shot but I'd like one where in a second it can take a few different pictures (if that makes sense).

Also, when you go to a club and there's a guy walking around with a camera that gets uploaded to the clubs gallery - the pictures are really well detailed, not pixallated at all and are really rich in colour.

AND preferably water proof or at least splash proof

Any suggestions? I'm willing to buy second hand also, or from ebay, I'm not a professional I just want it for when I go to Europe and USA in the next two years :)

Answer
The Best Digital Cameras

This review is intended to help you choose the best compact digital camera for your goals. In coming up with these recommendations for my friends, I looked carefully at Canon digital cameras (often the highest technology), Kodak digital cameras (great balance and simple user interfaces), Sony digital cameras (an alternative to Canon), and Olympus cameras, which can be good values and have some unique features such as weatherproofing.

Digital cameras fall into the following categories:

* ultra compact: good for slipping into a pocket or purse, but the controls and viewfinder are very cramped
* compact: what most people buy, reasonably pocketable, reasonably easy to control
* creative compact: more features and options than "compact", $200 more expensive; good for techno-junkies
* SLR-like: chunky, easy to control with fingers, larger sensors and better image qualty in low light
* SLR: large and cumbersome, best image quality, best low-light capability, best tool when you are going out specifically to take photos (covered in separate article)

[Each of these categories gets a separate section below. If you don't want to wade through this article, my current best recommendations for most people are the Fuji F30 (about $265; chunky but great for photos indoors without flash) and Olympus 720SW (about $280; waterproof and very compact)]

Decide if you're buying a camera to carry with you all the time, and therefore it must be compact, or if you're buying a camera that you will take out when you are specifically engaged in a photographic project. If you only use a camera during your child's soccer game, for example, the responsiveness and controllability are much more important than the camera's size. For travel, on the other hand, you probably don't want something so heavy that you are tempted to leave it back in the hotel.

In shopping for a good digital camera, the one specification that you can safely ignore is the number of pixels, which has almost nothing to do with image quality. A 3 MP camera will produce acceptable prints up to 8x10" in size. The interesting question is not the number of pixels, but their quality. Is the photo in focus? Is the high contrast and punch of a scene captured? Are the edges of objects rendered sharply? Physically larger and more expensive cameras generally do a better job at satisfying these harder-to-quantify objectives than small and cheap cameras.

Good quality waterproof camera?

Im going on a mission trip to a childrens home in honduras, this is my second year and im wanting to get a good camera to get more pictures of my babies this year(: we go swimming in rivers and lagoons alot and i just worry carrying a regular didgital camera around in such a rough enviroment. I want a sturdy digital camera that still takes good quality pictures, not blurry an dull(: does anyone have any information or reccomendations?

Answer
Would you be open to considering a waterproof digital camcorder rather than a waterproof digital camera? Reason being, I actually just bought this Sanyo waterproof camcorder, http://www.digitalimaginghq.com/sanyo-vpcwh1bl-blue-hd-waterproof-flash-memory-digital-camcorder.html for a few trips that I have planned this summer. I've only used it a few times, but I have used it during a recent canoe trip and it took very great video, but also does allow you to take still shocks. It may be work considering since you mentioned you were looking for something, waterproof and durables, as it sure help up during our camping trip where we were in an out of the waters and our boats. Hope this suggestion helps!

soo i need a new camera, i used to have a pentax optio....something, lol, but it accidentally got pushed into a lake...so i need a new one and i have been looking for a while and found what seems to be a really good one (http://www.amazon.com/Sony-Cyber-Shot-DSC-TX10-Waterproof-Panorama/dp/B004H8FNGM/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1309493106&sr=1-1) but the entire back is a touchscreen, and i'd rather not have a touchscreen camera, i just feel like it'd get scratched up and stuff.. so i desperately need help finding a new one! i have some things i need and want for it and if u know a camera that fits these please tell me! thanks! :)

Needs:
-waterproof
-HD video (preferably highest quality of HD which i think is 1080?)
-reallyy good quality of pictures
-not too expensive (my last one was $300 something, which is kinda expensive but its okayy i guess...)

Really Want:
-burst shooting
-interval shooting (take a # of pic's every # of sec.)
-sports mode and other helpful settings
-preferably not a touchscreen
-preferably the lens is inside the camera...which i think it has to be since its waterproof...
-panorama
-soft skin mode? (never had it before but it seems nice lol)

i feel like there was more...but i can't think of it now. but if u know of any that have these that'd be amazing! thank you! :)

Answer
gopro does all that, small camera, comes with multiple mounts, but it's a fixed f/l fisheye and there's no screen in the basic version
(well, HD video, interval shooting, waterproof, not touchscreen..)

Answer
Gotta disagree with Hondo on this one.

I support a group that uses Kodak point and shoots, for the last 8 years. In that time, we have upgraded cameras twice, but kept the older stuff in service. So something on the order of 200 cameras floating around out there, every one of them a Kodak.

In that time, we have had quite a few SD cards go bad, but not a one of the cameras. OK, we've lost a few, but do to the actions of the user, not the camera. These cameras are in Police patrol cars and investigation unit vehicles. They get used in all weather ( the main reason they die), day and night, 24/7. And they keep on working. These are not any special model, they are the same thing any consumer could buy... mostly C713 and C913 models at the moment.

If you do your research, you will find that Canon and Nikon and Sony, and all the rest, have their fair share of bad models. It is possible to get any electronic device dead out of the box, or break it fairly easily. The Kodak models are not rugged, waterproof, shockproof, or designed to take a fall, any more than any other brand. If you take care of it, it should work. Just like any other brand.

Which waterproof case/housing will fit my camera?

monster_gi

I need a waterproof case or housing that I can use for underwater pictures, but I don't want something that is $200+. I found the DicaPac cases but I don't know how reliable they are and which one would fit my digital camera. My camera is an Olympus SZ-12, it has 14MP and 24X zoom and 23mm and a 3.0" LCD.
It won't be used in very deep water. Like maybe a foot or two under the surface is all considering I can't really swim the greatest.

Answer
The DicaPac cases are supposedly good for 10m / 33ft, but in reality they are really designed for splash proofing the camera or swimming with it, not even snorkelling.

The biggest problem with all of the 'baggie' style 'cases' is that water pressure quickly makes it impossible to use the cameras buttons as it starts pressing them for you.

Any decent waterproof housing is going to cost you as much as the camera if not more.

If all you want to do is take a few snaps in very shallow water then the DicaPac's are useable but to match them up with the camera you need to compare the cameras size and layout with the case, ideally by going and trying them.

What is a good waterproof digital camera?

BahamaBlue

Answer
There are basically two choices. Pentax and Olympus each make one.
The Olympus 770SW is the most waterproof- down to 10m (33ft). It's a bit smaller than the Pentax and a bit more expensive as well.
and the
Pentax Optio W30 (the current version of the now outdated W10 recommended above) which is good to 3m (10ft) for 2 hrs. It runs about $260

Good Waterproof Cameras?

Nikki

I'm looking for a water proof camera. I've had two so far a kodak playsport and a JVC. They both broke within 6 months to a year. I'm looking for a camera thats strong and will take good pictures and videos in and out of water. Doesn't have to be SLR level but I want it nice.

I've been looking at:
Nikon coolpix aw100
Canon D20
Olympus Tough TG-1

If anyone knows anything about these cameras you can tell me. Or if you have another recommendation for a camera, you can tell me that too. Thanks.

Answer
I have a Panasonic TS3 (the predecessor of the TS4). Not great, but not bad. The autofocus does a lot of hunting. If it is pointed at the sun, there is a lot of blooming. I think demo video that I have seen for the GoPro hero looks better. However, every video that I have seen has overlaid music, and I have seen reviews that say the waterproof case muffles sound. The Panasonic TS3 can capture sound even in water. Emerging from water, it sounds a bit muffled for about two seconds until the water drains from the mic, but then it's okay. It does magnify wind noise, and the wind cut setting does nothing.
Here are some samples.
A lot of wind noise in this one:

An actual event, not just a test. As you can tell, I like to do real-time narration from the water:

A swimming pool test. This one shows you what I mean by blooming:

The best waterproof camera for 2011 is the Panasonic TS3. The picture and video are hands down the best that I have seen in rugged, shockproof cameras.

The second one is the Sony TX10.

Waterproof camera for diving?

Salty

I am thinking of purchasing a waterproof camera for scuba diving less then 25m depth. I like a point and shoot camera and not particularly interested in the finer points. Should I get a waterproof case for my current camera and use that or spend around £100 on a specially designed waterproof camera.

Answer
100 pounds will be just about enough to buy a decent enough housing for your camera, providing one is made for it. Check the web site of your camera manufacturer to see if they have one to fit your particular model. Another source for a housing is Ike Lite http://www.ikelite.com/ . Use the charts there to see if your camera is listed. An Ikelite housing will cost a bit more than a camera manufacturer's housing since they are more robust and have a 200 foot depth rate, but they are good. I own one for my Canon.
As for amphibious cameras. These cameras are essentially all in one units. They come in a waterproof case in some models, they can't can't be removed from. Most decent ones will be rated for a 30M depth or a little more and have the ability to be removed from the housing.
It's doubtful you'll find an amphibious camera for 100 pounds that's decent. Good ones usually start at 150-200 pounds. Examples of this type of camera are Sea&Sea , Bonica and SeaLife. All are good manufacturers and offer a wide range of products.

Buy a housing for your current camera or buy an amphib? That's going to be a personal choice and budget thing. For myself, I chose the housing route because I really like my camera and it's functions. I couldn't find an amphib that matched it's performance. I also like NOT having to lug two cameras around, buy extra memory cards, spare batteries and the like.
Edit: Those 25 dollar cameras are the disposable film ones. They are also for the most part, limited to "16 feet" meaning they actually are good to 15 feet or two atmospheres. Great option if you don't intend to do more than a holiday pic but green, they ain't. The cases are recylcled as best they can but not 100%. Yup...you get a recycled camera and case that's fine for light duty use.
Bottom line with dive gear no matter what you're purchasing is:
You get what you pay for. There are no deals on quality equipment, just discounts for regular shop customers. Buy it online, expect online service. Buy it at a physical dive shop and if you're not happy you have a ton of options.
Ebay, I'd avoid like the plague. Uhh huh, saw some Russian rebreathers in there the other day that some idiots bid on. The next divers to die for a deal online and not the first.
What happened to "if it's too good to be true......."?

best mirrorless camera for sports?

!

I have been debating on which camera that suits my needs. I've considered slr but I think it's too bulky to travel around with.

I want a cam that'll be great for shooting far and fast moving objects like sports, and I'll definitely be using it for travelling and also micro shots.

What lense and for which cam should I get for shooting FAR and/or FAST moving objects?

I've been eyeing nx300 but I've also heard bout other fantastic ones.
1. Nikon 1 aw1- it's waterproof! Which will be great for travelling and has an incredible fps continuous shooting speed! But, it's only 14mp..
2. Sony nex 7- awesome fps continuous shooting speed as well. Amazing 24 mp!
3. Olympus om d e5- weatherproof, fast too!

If there's another camera that will suit me better, plrase mention! THANKS!

Answer
NONE

Why?

Because mirrorless camera systems use an electronic viewfinder which can lag behind what the sensor is actually seeing.

This one factor can be the cause for missed shots.

If your subject is sports, action or really any subject that moves while you are shooting (shooting fashion is just on such subject), you need a camera that has an optical viewfinder.

Here is a shot taken during a game. The key to it was anticipating the action and nailing the shot.

http://s862.photobucket.com/user/fotomanaz/media/Answers%20album/i_AIA3008copy.jpg.html?sort=3&o=16

What I suggest is that you spend some time talking to the other sports photographers where you shoot sports. See if any of them have used a mirrorless camera and what their experiences have been.

Some of the sporting events I cover have over 25 shooters on the sidelines and I have yet to see anyone using a mirrorless camera. We all are using Nikon or Canon cameras and glass

My guess is that you may want to reduce the weight of the equipment you carry to a game. Since the lenses we use are huge and heavy, attaching a smaller camera to it may not give you much of a weight advantage.

EDIT: You seem to be impressed with the 24 mp sensor. Don't be.

Both my cameras I use professionally use 12 mp sensor. Just shoot in RAW and set a custom white balance for each shooting situation and you will get perfectly excellent images.

NOTE: When shooting video in Full HD, you are only using 2.2 mp of the sensors on your camera

Answer
Panasonic Lumix TS20 16.1 MP TOUGH Waterproof Digital Camera with 4x Optical Zoom is my 4th digital camera in 2 years. My $300 Nikon was damaged when daughters 5 year old friend dropped it, my $300 Canon stopped working on a Caribbean vacation due to high humidity (do not buy a Canon and use near salt water and heat), my new $300 Nikon died after an unexpected roll over in a kayak. Given that I was into digital cameras for close to $1,000 in just over a year I decided to go with a waterproof, drop resistant design and this $130 Lumix easily produces photos equal in quality to the Canon and Nikon's costing several hundred dollars more.

I'm looking for a good waterproof camera to take kayaking. Does anyone have one they'd recommend?

Answer
I have the Pentax Optio W10. It's not that great of a camera, but it is waterproof. It ever shoots video with sound underwater. It has a good time lapse mode (takes full resolution images every 10 seconds). Remember though: waterproof cameras do not float, so have a plan to not drop it in the water.

For a better quality camera that's waterproof, I've heard the Olympus Stylus SW series are the best.

Camcorder with microphone input?

I need a waterproof camcorder to make a documentary, but the guy at the store said that no waterproof camcorders have microphone jacks. is this true?
if not which waterproof camcorders have mic inputs? And where can i get them? (In Australia)

Answer
while it is possible to seal a mic jack to prevent water from entering the camera, no standard mic jack will prevent water from getting on the contacts. if you plan on ocean swimming, the salt water will short out the mic connection electrically. you will be best off to add your narration afterwards in the computer video editor, and use the built-in camera mic for "natural sound".

Answer
I know Olympus has 2 models for shockproof and waterproof.

1) Stylus 1030. It has very tough body and good picture. Shockproof up 6.6 feet and waterproof up to 33 feet and also freeze proof.

2)Stylus 1050. This one replace the Stylus 1030 and this cost a little bit more. 1050 doesn't have tough looking body but still do the same job. Shockproof only to 5 feet and waterproof up to 10 feet.

Amazon has it for really cheap

The Pentax Optio W60 Waterproof... or the Casio Exilim zoom digital camera? - I just want to know which one is better overall...

Answer
The Pentax Optio W60 Waterproof is better if you live somewhere where its basically summer all year around because it will be able to take under water photos as well on land. But if you are the type of person (Like me) that cares about how you camera is uniformed, and the appearance of it than i would get the Casio Exilim zoom digital camera because it is sooo much better looking and it comes in so many colors. But than again the Pentax Optio W60 Waterproof has alot more features that will be use full.

where can i buy a waterproof camera case?

I don't know if the waterproof case exist for your camera, but very inexpensive and good option is waterproof pouch. Here is review of DiCAPac waterproof pouches for digital cameras. I have WP-510 and it really rocks, it's waterproof up to 20 meters underwater!

Good waterproof digital camera?

Q. I want a good quality camera that will take pictures underwater & while I'm in the pool without it getting ruined. Any suggestions?

Answer
The Coolpix AW100 and S30 are two good choices. The Olympus Tough TG-820 iHS is also a good choice.

Regardless of what camera you buy, you'll also need a genuine spare battery, 2 or 3 8GB Class 10 SD cards, an SD card reader and a little case.

Waterproof, edit, & inexpensive camera? need thoughts on what kind of camera I should get.?

Kaitlyn

Lately I've really been wanting a good camera. I had one a few years ago that is very old & doesn't have edits & such. I want a camera that is:
-waterproof
-has focus & zoom
-edits like for blemishes on faces.
-inexpensive, like less than 400 or 500 dollars.
(even if there is one that has no waterproofing, than I would like to see those too. waterproof isn't my top priority & I can just get those waterproof cases)
Thanks so much for commenting & showing me cameras! (:

Answer
A waterproof camera withing your budget is easy.

Retouching (what you are calling edits) is done in post production.

ALL cameras are auto-focus and have zoom lenses within your budget.

Here is one that has what you want and includes GPS

http://www.nikonusa.com/Nikon-Products/Product/Compact-Digital-Cameras/26293/COOLPIX-AW100.html

There are a few such cameras also made by Fujifilm, Pentax and Canon

You will have to visit a shop that sells them and see which you like the best

What camera is best for my situation?

Alicia

My husband and I are missionaries going to the Congo in Africa (jungle) for the next few years. I am looking for a water resistant, shock resistant camera (very humid environment). I need one that will focus on close ups of items without it blurring or making the objects further away in focus. My current camera is a standard digital camera but it does not focus on close objects and it is not water resistant. The camera will also need to be able to use a memory card so I can email pictures of my daughter back home to the states. Bonus points if it records videos as well.

Answer
I don't know why Jim A continues to tell people that there's no such thing as a shock resistant camera. Just search for "shockproof camera" on Amazon. There's dozens of them!

Try the Panasonic DMC-FT4 or DMC-TS4 as it's called in the USA. It's waterproof to 12 meters, shockproof for a 2 meter fall, freezeproof to -10 celcius and dustproof. It's got the macro closeup facility you want and uses standard SDHC memory cards. And it records full HD 1080p video. Even underwater!

Review here with a few other waterproof cameras: http://www.lenstip.com/134.5-article-Waterproof_cameras_test_2012_-_part_I_Panasonic_Lumix_DMC-FT4.html

I would advise buying and testing it well before you leave. The biggest recurring complaint I see with waterproof cameras is that they have quality control problems, meaning you don't always get a good waterproof one. It's not the easiest piece of equipment to make because the rubber waterproof seals are quite difficult to design install in a way that guarantees that water can't get in. Usually if they work then they do continue to work well for several years, but it's easy to end up with a duff one.

The problem with closeup macro work is that when you are very close to an object, your depth of field (the amount in focus) is not very great, so things behind the subject do tend to be out of focus. That's just part of the physics of photography.

You can compensate a bit by setting the camera into aperture-priority mode and setting a small aperture, but that in turn means using slower shutter speeds, so you are more likely to introduce blur through camera shake (unless you use a tripod) or through the object moving.

You can compensate for slow shutter speeds a bit by increasing the ISO setting, but that tends to add more "noise" to the image.

This balance of shutter speed, aperture size and ISO setting is at the core of all photography. To get a lot in focus with macro pictures you need a lot of light, a lens which stops down to very small apertures and which focuses close up and a good tripod. That's only really achievable with a Digital SLR camera with dedicated macro lens - and that isn't cheap.

Often the best macro shots are obtained by deliberately throwing everything completely out of focus except for the main object.

Best choice point and shoot ($300-$450)?

I am looking for a good camera for indoor pictures. I have 3 little kids and take a million shots indoors, but the little $100 camera I have doesn't take decent pictures. I've looked into it a bit and have found a few with good reviews and decent picture quality. The few I've looked into:

Olympus TG-1iHS 12 MP Waterproof Digital Camera with 4x Optical Zoom
Sony Cyber-shot DSC-HX30V 18.2 MP Exmor R CMOS Digital Camera with 20x Optical Zoom and 3.0-inch LCD (Black) (2012 Model)
Nikon COOLPIX P310 16.1 MP CMOS Digital Camera with 4.2x Zoom NIKKOR Glass Lens and Full HD 1080p Video
Nikon COOLPIX L810 16.1 MP Digital Camera with 26x Zoom NIKKOR ED Glass Lens and 3-inch LCD (Red)
Fujifilm XF1/Blk 12MP Digital Camera with 3-Inch LCD (Black)
Olympus XZ-1 10 MP Digital Camera with f1.8 Lens and 3-Inch OLED Monitor (Black)
Canon PowerShot SX260 HS 12.1 MP CMOS Digital Camera with 20x Image Stabilized Zoom 25mm Wide-Angle Lens and 1080p Full-HD Video (Black)
Panasonic DMC-FZ150K 12.1 MP Digital Camera with CMOS Sensor and 24x Optical Zoom (Black)
Nikon COOLPIX P510 16.1 MP CMOS Digital Camera with 42x Zoom NIKKOR ED Glass Lens and GPS Record Location (Black)

I was wondering if anyone had one of these or a decent knowledge of them and could advise me on which would be best for what I'm looking for. Or another suggestion of a camera that takes good indoor pictures. I work a lot in low light and with fast kids. I'm not expecting a miracle - point and shoot cameras can only do so much, but... Any help would be appreciated!

Answer
Nikon and canon make quality cameras. They will give you a camera that will last. Most of these cameras will brake easily, but canons and nikons won't. You can choose any from these two companies.

What is the best waterproof digital camera?

Laura

My family is going on a cruise in July and we would like to purchase a waterproof digital camera. It will be used to take underwater pictures in the pool and the beach but as well as a regular camera capturing sunsets and family pictures. I don't want to take 2 cameras on the cruise so I want the camera to be good at both. I'm not looking to spend more than $350 so that eliminates some top of the line cameras. I am a scuba diver however I realize that most cameras only go to about 30 feet or something like that. So If you guys could help me out and give me input on what to buy that would be great! Thank you!

Answer
Here are two.

Nikon Coolpix S30, under $120 and Nikon Coolpix UW100, under $350 (it has a built-in GPS)

underwater digital cameras?

H V

are any of the "waterproof" digital cameras made by companies such as canon, olympus, etc... suitable for scuba diving or do u need a case?

Answer
"Waterproof" generally only means that it can take a little rain or ocean spray and be ok.
.
While I have seen some cameras that are cheap and claim to be for underwater purposes, I'm a bit wary of them. They usually aren't from reputable camera manufacturers. (Generally when something looks too good to be true, it usually is.)
.
For major brand names, these are usually a bit more expensive. "Waterproof" never means that it can be immersed in water. You'll have to get an "underwater" case for your camera, or purchase a camera that is specifically designed for underwater use.
.
CANON

.
Olympus and Nikon also carry similar products.

High quality yet affordable underwater camera?

ccokae

This summer I'm going snorkeling for a few weeks in the Great Barrier Reef and I would love to get some great underwater photos. I have a Nikon D7000. Is there a certain kind of case I put around it to take underwater (this may sound completely ridiculous)? If not, what are some semi-high quality but affordable (under $300) underwater cameras?

Answer
The spacial waterproof cases for Nikon are quite expensive. Sometimes it is easier to buy waterproof camera instead.
Latest waterproof cameras are quite good. On very rare occasions they come faulty, but the same is with regular digital cameras.
If you want camera, that makes good quality pictures on land or underwater, then I would suggest to look into these three cameras: Sony TX5, Panasonic Lumix TS2 and Olympus Rough 8010.
And all three of them cost less than $300 on Amazon.
You just need to decide which features you need more:
Sony TX5 is waterproof to 10 ft, when Panasonic TS2 and Olympus Rough 8010 are both waterproof to 33ft. And Sony TX5 has got the lowest resolution from these three. It's just 10.2 megapixels. Panasonic and Olympus have a resolution of 14MP, which is quite a great difference.
All cameras are shock-, dust-, sand- and freeze-proof. But Olympus 8010 is also a crushproof and designed to withstand a weight up to 220 pounds.
Sony TX5 gives you the opportunity to capture panoramic pictures with it's Sweep Panorama feature. Your images are automatically stitched together, which gives you the extra-wide view of the scenery.
Olympus 8010 has got the panoramic shooting option too. It also comes with a built-in 2GB memory, which is more than most cameras available on the market.
Panasonic TS2 has a good quality video recording. Although all these cameras record video in HD format. But Panasonic TS2 seems to be the most expensive out of them.
But if you do not need waterproof camera right now, Sony are releasing a new Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX10 in April 2011. It will have a resolution of impressing 16.2 megapixels. And it is going to be the first waterproof camera that can capture 3D still images. You can pre-order this camera and it costs $330.

Waterproof point & shoot camera...?

Stu D'Appl

I'm looking for a waterproof point & shoot camera to use primarily when we're out surfing, but also as a pocket camera. I'm looking at the Sony TX5, the Olympus MJU 6010 and the Canon D10, but wondered if anyone had any other suggestions or experience of these types of cameras. my budget is up to £250.

Answer
Among those choices, for a camera that you expect to get wet but will not take very deep the Sony TX5 may be a good choice.
Here is a review
http://www.photographybay.com/2010/03/06/sony-cyber-shot-tx5-hands-on-review/
It's advantage is the 10 MP CMOS sensor that will give you less noise or artifact as you turn up the ISO to capture action. It will also give you better video.

I have one concern about this camera. As seen at
http://www.sony.co.uk/product/dsc-t-series/dsc-tx5/tab/technicalspecs
I see an absence of a sport or action mode. Years ago I had a Sony W70 that I used with a light duty underwater housing for kayaking. In Program mode it had an annoying habit of selecting small aperture, slow speed. It had no sport mode per se. A background blur mode favored wide aperture, but was limited to ISO 100.

So I don't know if Sony has ever fixed that problem.

underwater cameras vs. regular cameras.?

Molly

do regular cameras take significantly better pictures than underwater cameras because i want and underwater one for christmas but i would only be able to use it in the same. and at the same time i want a camera that takes good pictures..the underwater camera i was looking at is this : http://www.target.com/Fujifilm-FinePix-10-0MP-Digital-Camera/dp/B001R23JNU/ref=br_1_8?ie=UTF8&frombrowse=1&searchView=grid5&searchNodeID=1243783011&node=1243783011&searchRank=salesrank&searchPage=1&searchSize=30&id=Fujifilm%20FinePix%2010%200MP%20Digital%20Camera

Answer
The camera you've linked to has good reviews. This is a waterproof camera and should take just as good pics as a 'normal' camera - the lens/sensor etc is all the same. The only difference is that this one has waterproof seals to stop water getting in.

Just a word of warning - this type of camera is ok in a pool (shallow water) but is only waterproof to 3m for a max time of 2 hours. If you push it beyond its limits, it may leak.

Answer
Hey, why is someone giving TomTom a thumbs down? It is perfectly legit to tell someone to use the Yahoo! guide. They can put in a fwe desires, like price or pixels, and it will lead them to some suggestions.

TomTom, maybe you can just use the link to the page: http://shopping.yahoo.com/b:Digital%20Cameras:20148412;_ylt=AphZjicVJAfeIckOrTY1sUUSssUu;_ylu=X3oDMTBpamdzYzFwBF9zAzIwMTQ4NDEyBHNlYwNiYw-- (You'll have to go there and copy the link to get the whole thing for future answers. You can have it and I won't use it if I see you are using it in the future.)

Anyhow, here's my standard "cheap but good camera" answer.

Some of our best answerers always recommends the Fujifilm FinePix F20 camera as the best-for-less choice. I have to say that I like the sample images at Steve's site (below). If Morey000 or SpaceCowboy show up after me and make this recommendation, choose them as the best answer, because I'm just passing along their suggestion. I have no personal experience with this camera. I see it at B&H Photo (available through Yahoo! Shopping) for $150; $190 with a 1 GB Sandisk memory card.

http://www.steves-digicams.com/2007_reviews/fuji_f20.html
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/specs/Fujifilm/fuji_finepixf20.asp

My brother has the A540 and my mother-in-law has the A530 - on my recommendation - and neither one has stopped speaking to me yet. Based on this and experience with other Canon Powershot cameras, I am now recommending the A550 as a nice and relatively inexpensive camera. The A550, which has more pixels, but offers less user control.

The A550 costs $170 at B&H and, of course, you'll need a memory card.

A550 review: http://www.steves-digicams.com/2007_reviews/a550.html

Consumer Reports from May 2007 has a short article on digital cameras and they recommend 10 different point and shoot cameras in the following order within groups according to camera design:
**COMPACTS**
Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX2 (Overall score 75) [$410]
Kodak EasyShare C875 (Overall score 73) [$165] - Rated better for shutter lag
Nikon Coolpix P4 (Overall score 65)
**SUBCOMPACTS**
Canon Powershot SD500 (Overall score 72)
Casio Exilim EX-Z850 (Overall score 72)
Sony Cybershot DSC-W50 (Overall score 70) [$180] [Similar to W55] - Rated better for shutter lag
Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX3 (Overall score 69) [$200] [Similar to FX-10, FX-12]
Olympus Stylus 720SW (Overall score 61) [Similar to 770SW - $360] (Waterproof)
**ADVANCED COMPACTS ("Near SLR")**
Fujifilm Finepix S6000fd (Overall score 77) [$300] - Rated better for shutter lag
Fujifilm Finepix E900 (Overall score 73) [$250]
[Things change so quickly in digital cameras that I can not find all of these models listed for sale and it's not even May yet. Prices are from B&H Photo, April 2007.]

what's the best camera for photo under water?

Dyna c

Answer
you have three options the Olympus tough, Powershot D10 and Panasonic DMC TSI for underwater out-of-the-box. The Tough is the most famous since Oly have been doing underwater cameras and casings for years already.

But you have another option to buy a higher end point and shoot digicam and buy an underwater casing accessory, which may cost you more but will let you go into the deep upto 40 meters or more.

I had an Olympus semi-pro the 8mp c8080, and bought the underwater casing for it.. You can still control everything in the camera.

To sum it up if you don't go deeper than 8or 10 feet go with the out-of-the-box underwater digicam. But if you want better image quality go with the separate underwater casing. Olympus have an underwater casing for almost all of their camera.

What camera would you recommend...?

Q. To an overly energetic teenager with A.D.D. who wants to get into photography. I'm pretty clumsy so nothing too expensive. I'll probally end up breaking it. Please include brand, model, price, and why. Also a link would be nice. (Btw, I want a digital SLR.)
I already have a digital camera but I want to upgrade to a DSLR. Maybe a Canon or Nikon

Answer
Wow. If you want a DSLR, and preety clumsy and going to break it. You should stay away from a very expensive toy called the DSLR. However, If thats what you want, then thats the info you'll get

Personally, for teenagers, i'll highly recommend the Canon 1000D. A cheap camera that can sustain some knocks. (Just not too hard). I borrowed it from a friend and went for a hiking trip with it, Climbing up a mountain somewhere in Malaysia. (Malaysia is in Southeast Asia). Just beware that DSLRs aren't some waterproof and shockproof olympus compact, and must be handed with care as changing lenses will involve exposing the mirror to the outside world.

If you want something cheaper, then the Nikon D40x would be the way to go. Cheaper, lighter, smaller. 3 reasons for a Nikon D40x.

If you just want to take some shots, I'll recommend the Panasonic Lumix FZ28 with its 18x zoom. Its more of a superzoom, and really very useful if you don't want to carry too much stuff.
A canon alternative would be the Powershot SX10IS

or.. if you want something that fits in your pocket, its the new Canon Powershot SX200IS. with a high 3200 iso for a compact, 12x Optical zoom and 12.1 MP, compacts can't get any better than this. For now at least..

So its your call, if you really want a DSLR, then choose between the canon 1000D/Rebel Xs or Nikon D40

The camera I remember is held vertically. It has 3 models and records in HD. It is also a "rugged" camera, so it can go underwater up to 9 feet on one of the models. It records in 14.1 (or 14.2, can't remember) or 16.1 (or 16.2) depending on the model. I believe te model comes in either blue orange or black. If you could please assist me if anyone knows which camera I am describing. I am positive it is held upright with your hand (looks like an upside down L) when held because the screen flips out.

A new camera for our vacation this summer?

Andy M

Summer is almost here and we have been looking for a new rugged camera to replace our old olympus waterproof camera. I am now trying to compare the Panasonic Lumix DMC Ts2 (http://www.panasonic.net/avc/lumix/compact/ts2_ft2/index.html) that was released about two weeks ago, and the Olympus Stylus Tough 8010 (http://www.olympusamerica.com/cpg_section/product.asp?product=1497&page=overview) which came around at about the same time. In your opinion, which camera is a better, all-around camera that I should buy. In video and picture quality. We will be going to Mexico soon, and would want one as soon as possible.

Answer
Below is a link to a web page that lists the features and specs of the 2 cameras side by side.

The 2nd and 3rd links are to websites that may be able to provide more information.

Then the last 3 links are to websites where you may find a good deal on a camera but also there are customer reviews on equipment purchased and that may be of assistance.

Hope this helps.

SURFING AND SKIMMING AND UNDER WATER ACTIVITIES SUCH AS SPEAR FISHING AND WHAT NOT

Answer
So called âaction sportsâ cameras are really invaluable if you want to document your sporting activities. GoPro just so happens to have that market cornered with their increasingly bold and far-reaching advertising. Know however that there are actually quite a few â and CHEAPER â alternatives. Check out this short listing on Tribal Surf:

http://www.tribalsurf.net/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=1674

With that said, I have looked into all of these alternatives and for surfing, the GoPro really has that application down pat. While these alternatives can do the job, they all lack certain little things which give the GoPro the edge.

Check out these reviews of the GoPro line of cameras also on Tribal Surf:

http://www.tribalsurf.net/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=1461

We havenât done a review on the Hero2 yet but the big difference is the ability to change angle of view from the traditional fish-eye to narrow (for 3rd person filming). There is a slew of accessories as well that are quite awesome: wifi remote (no more grasping to turn the thing on or off), dive housing (fixes abberations for underwater filming), and many more.

Keep in mind though that if you want to do involved video editing with your HD footage, you will need a computer powerful enough and with enough disk drive space to handle it. (If you want to do full 1080P HD editing, you will also need the appropriate monitor and a Blu-Ray burner and Blu-Ray media.)

Mark

is it worth spending the money for a gopro?, or should i try finding another waterproof camera? any good ones?

What are some good underwater cameras?

Bill Jense

I have a price range of no more than $450.
I don't have a camera, so I can't just buy an underwater housing.
When I say underwater camera, what I really mean is scuba diving camera, waterproof to at least 100 ft.

Answer

Underwater camera vs Waterproof housing?

Someone please tell me which one to opt for? an underwater camera or a regular one inside waterproof housing? i want quality resolution for a depth of atleast 5 metres. and what brands do i opt for?
hey thank you very much Al.that was so informative and i wasn't expecting it so soon. you still haven't answered the resolution part. is there generally a difference in the resolution between a waterproof camera and a camera in casing? i vaguely remember reading somewhere that an encased regular camera underwater does not have as good a resolution as a waterproof one. which one performs better in that department (depth 5meters)? sorry if my question is too basic or not specific enough. my knowledge of cameras is rather poor. thanks once again for the helpful analysis.

Answer
I have owned both (Olympus Tough 8010 and a FantaSea housing for a NIkon Coolpix S200).

They both have their advantages and disadvantages.

1. A waterproof housing will have more depth, often 100 Meters. A waterproof camera is usually limited to 3 or 10 Meters, depending on brand and model.

2. When used in salt water, you have to rinse a waterproof camera off - it's up to you with a housing.

3. Waterproof cameras can leak - quality built housings almost never do.

4. Waterproof cameras usually have a max immersion time - 1 hour, etc. Housings do not.

5. Housings are bulky, waterproof cameras are less so.

6. Waterproof cameras are usually ruggedized, so they are also drop proof. Housings use standard cameras.

7. Housings are usually only available for select cameras. If the camera is no longer made, the housing cannot usually be adapted for a different camera.

8. Housings normally allow you to screw in a RED filter to take care of the underwater color balance shift - waterproof cameras usually do not. However, some waterproof cameras have a color balance setting for underwater use.

9. You must make sure to install the camera in your housing before use. A waterproof camera is always ready.

10. The controls on the housing are kind of stiff as they have o-rings that seal them. The controls on the cameras sometimes don't seem as responsive underwater.

11. A waterproof camera should be checked once a year by the manufacturer to ensure water tightness. A housing should be checked once a year by the manufacturer to ensure water tightness.

12. Price is about the same - a housing is usually $140 or so, and depending on the camera, you can get into one for $300 and up. A good waterproof camera is about the same cost.

Anyway, I see the two differences as convenience vs. depth capability. I went to a waterproof camera from the housing as I don't scuba, and the 10 Meter depth for my Olympus is enough for snorkeling, which is all that I do. So I sold the FantaSea/Nikon housing and bought the Olympus.

Here is a webpage where I go over the different waterproof camera options: http://www.althephoto.com/cameras/underwater.php

What is a great underwater camera with high mp and a good zoom, but compact enough to carry in a pocket?

Dancelover

I am looking for a new underwater camera. I currently have the Fujifilm FinePix Z33WP and while I love the size, I am simply not happy with the quality of the pictures or speed at which they are taken. I am looking for a camera with:

-High mp and very good zoom
-Shockproof, dustproof, freezeproof, but most importantly WATERPROOF!!!***
-Small, pocket sized, for easy everyday use
-Takes pictures quickly! (And jumping pictures are nice)
-Good quality macro pictures. (Not number one on my list of features, but it would be nice)
-Good videos!!
-An SD card for memory storage is preferred but not going to be the deciding factor on a camera.
-A great battery life!! I don't care too much on the type of battery as long as it stays charged for a long amount of time and gives an early warning when it's about to die! (No more camera dying while out at the beach!)

-If anyone can tell me any information on the latest types of memory storage and if anything is easier than an SD card that would be great. I am open to something new if it is convenient to load pictures onto the computer/printer/etc. Also, any information on the best type of battery. I have a canon (not underwater) that I have had for several years and it takes AA, which is easy, but they last about five minutes.

**I realize that I have high hopes and am very specific, but if anyone can help me find a camera that meets all or some of my specifications I would appreciate it SO very much. I am asking for any help or stories of your own experiences with underwater cameras. Thanks to all you camera-smart people!!

Answer
Two years ago Dpreview did an underwater group test.
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/Q209waterproofgroup/
Your experience with the Fujifilm FinePix Z33WP seems to agree with their results.
The Panasonic DMC-TS1 did very well. The current model, the TS3 would probably be worth looking at.

Im getting a new digital camera. What brand should I buy?

Q.

Answer
Please post a new question. Tell us how much you want to spend, what you plan to use the camera for most of the time, and what your prior experience is with photography. With this information, we will be much more helpful to you.

Steve's reviews updates the "Best Camera" list periodically:
http://www.steves-digicams.com/best_cameras.html

This is somewhat out of date, but check this page for a general idea: http://tech.yahoo.com/rc/digital-cameras/103 Most cameras mentioned have been replaced with newer models, which we will hope are as good or better than what they replaced.

Here's another resource for you. Look on down the page if you are interested in point and shoot cameras instead of dSLR's. http://www.digitalcamerainfo.com/ratings.php

Here's another listing in order by ratings. They are only separated according to general groups, such as "Highly Recommended," etc. They are NOT listed within the groups according to higher rating. They are listed by date tested.
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/default.asp?view=rating
