Good waterproof/underwater digital camera, $200 or under?

Melody:)

I've been looking for a waterproof/underwater digital camera online. I've found them as low as the low 100's with horrible reviews. The only one I've found with good reviews is the Olympus - Stylus Tough 14.0-Megapixel and it's $300, which I cant afford. (I'm 15, it's an early birthday present from my mom so I can have it in time to go on vacation)

Could someone please recommend me one with good picture quality above and under water, that's no more than $200?

-thanks:)

What is the best waterproof camera for under $100.00?

Dave

Answer
Brand-new, there's nothing under $100 that's from the big name brands (Nikon, Canon, Pentax, Sony, Olympus, Panasonic, Fujifilm). However, you have a number of truly worthwhile options you could consider.

One option for new cameras are the various generic cameras that are waterproof from 10 to about 30 feet, such as the Coleman Xtreme Shock and Waterproof camera (12 mp, 33 ft claimed); Kodak EasyShare Sport123 (12mp, claimed 10 feet). These are okay choices (I'd pick the Kodak over the Coleman and its look-alikes), but they don't have a true zoom lens.

Another option: the least expensive option is to get a waterproof bag for your existing digital camera, the cheapest of which would cost about $20-30. The drawback here is that operation of controls can be difficult through the bag thickness. They do work though. Just test it out in your bathtub beforehand and work out how to use the camera.

A hard plastic housing for your existing camera might cost just over $100.

A third option: the used camera route. This is the best option in my opinion, because you can get higher quality digital cameras and film cameras very cheaply. The risk is that they may be damaged from prior use, but that's easy to check out. For quality, a used underwater film camera is tops. Loaded with high sensitivity (high ISO) film, such a camera would be hard to beat in quality due to the size of the frame. The drawback is that there's no screen to give you feedback, so you don't know if you're screwing up the shot. If you're highly skilled with cameras and exposure, a used film camera will work great, but if you're not, then go with a used digital underwater camera.

Best used cameras for underwater: Try a Pentax W30 or W60. It will take some hard shopping for a used one at that price, but they can be had for $100. Also look at the Olympus Stylus Tough 6000, which is waterproof and can be found used for under $100. These cameras also have zoom lenses, which makes it easier to frame shots.

If you want brand-new, try that Kodak EasyShare C123 mentioned above, but again, you won't get a zoom lens.
