What is the average longevity of a good Digital Compact Camera (if maintained properly) ?

shankd67

How many years can I expect to see a digital point & shoot camera (esp. from a popular brand viz. Canon, Olympus or Nikon) ....working, if I operate & maintain it in a proper manner ?
My maintenance of any thing is quite good. I am from India and its a tropical country.

Answer
The key to maintaining anything is proper care. I keep my gear clean, properly cased, always use a neck/wrist strap, and try to protect them in inclement weather.

For example, I have:

1) a Canon SD870 IS (a P&S) that is 4+ years old, and it looks and works like brand new. I expect another 10 years at least.

Other older cameras:
2) a Canon Sureshot WP-1 (waterproof 35mm P&S) that is 16 years old
3) a D30 (DSLR) that is going on 12 years old, and still sees frequent use (I'm using it to teach my wife photography and use it for boudoir sessions)
4) Several (7) 35mm film cameras from the 60s & 70s that work great
5) a Bronica C that is (uhhh...counts on fingers and toes several times) about 46 years old

By keeping them clean, getting CLA maintenance (Cleaning/Lubrication/timing Adjustment) done on them, and giving them normal use... they all work like they were designed to

Waterproof point & shoot camera...?

Stu D'Appl

I'm looking for a waterproof point & shoot camera to use primarily when we're out surfing, but also as a pocket camera. I'm looking at the Sony TX5, the Olympus MJU 6010 and the Canon D10, but wondered if anyone had any other suggestions or experience of these types of cameras. my budget is up to £250.

Answer
Among those choices, for a camera that you expect to get wet but will not take very deep the Sony TX5 may be a good choice.
Here is a review
http://www.photographybay.com/2010/03/06/sony-cyber-shot-tx5-hands-on-review/
It's advantage is the 10 MP CMOS sensor that will give you less noise or artifact as you turn up the ISO to capture action. It will also give you better video.

I have one concern about this camera. As seen at
http://www.sony.co.uk/product/dsc-t-series/dsc-tx5/tab/technicalspecs
I see an absence of a sport or action mode. Years ago I had a Sony W70 that I used with a light duty underwater housing for kayaking. In Program mode it had an annoying habit of selecting small aperture, slow speed. It had no sport mode per se. A background blur mode favored wide aperture, but was limited to ISO 100.

So I don't know if Sony has ever fixed that problem.

I need a waterproof camera with remote...Recommendations.?

mb_surf48

I need a waterproof camera that I can attach to my kayak that has a remote option where I can turn the camera on/off and take a picture. Needs to be at least 4mp would prefer at least 5 and be no more than 200.00.

is there one thats any good that even exists?

Right now Ive been trying to find a used go pro with a remote but when you add in the 80.00 remote it always goes over 200.

Answer
The best I could find is Pentax Optio WG-1 ($199) and Pentax 39892 remote ($24). This camera is better than those GoPo even it cost you $24 more. Couldn't find anything cheaper. But Pentax site says this remote works with their compact cameras made after 2010. So u might need to do little bit digging and find a older model which works with this remote.

A good sports waterproof camera?

Isaac

I need a good waterproof, shockproof, and high res cam.
I'm going to record Airsoft wars with it, so I might need to be able to strap it on to my head or gun.
I'm going to go diving with it, maybe even up to 30 ft deep, 20ft should be enough but I'd prefer 30.
I would like it to be 720p hd, and be able to record up to or somewhere around 60 fps.
And it needs to be able to support a 4gb sd or micro sd card, maybe higher.

Now I could use 2 cameras, like one for airsoft and one for diving... maybe... but I prefer all in one kinda thing.
Also, it might need to have night vision, for night airsoft wars and such... must be atleast 40ft night vision though, although night vision is not a must...
And slightly affordable...

Thanks! 10 points for the best answer!

Answer
a reasonable camera would be the Olympus Stylus 800 "Tough". It is waterproof and shock resistant. no night shot camera is going to work at 40 feet unless you have an IR illuminator the size of the ones that were on the army's M60A tanks. The Stylus is primarily a still camera, but it does have a "movie" mode for video.

Underwater camera?

blondbrune

Want to buy an underwater digital camera. In your opinion, what is the best all around camera? Will be used for snorkeling and different adventures, no major photography. Just a good camera needed.

Answer
I'm looking for one, too. My boss is big into SCUBA, and he recommended the SeaLife SL320 to me. The only real downside is that it doesn't have a zoom lens. But, you can buy a snap-on zoom lens for it, that you can attach/detach while underwater. I'm probably going to get that one in the next 6 months or so.

By the way, DON'T jump into the water while holding the camera. Jump in without it, and have someone hand it to you. If the camera says it's waterproof to a depth of x feet, that's a measure of water pressure it can withstand, and the pressure of jumping in will certainly be more than that.

underwater camera?

alaina

i'm looking for the best underwater camera i can find for under... $500 or so. it's for diving, so it has to be rated to at least 130ft. it would be nice if it was also decent on land, but the underwater quality is most important.
thanks!

Answer
Try eBay for a used Nikonos film camera. Those are rated for 160'.
With digital you can forget about it. Olympus has a few underwater point & shoot models that are okay for snorkeling, and there are 'zip lock' style pouches that you can buy from camera stores for under $100 for all other point & shoot cameras, but you'll require a quality hard case to reach 130ft. Here's a list of underwater housings from B&H for a general idea: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/shop/5237/Cameras_Housings_Kits_Housings.html
Housings that can reach 130' cost a whopping +$2000, and you'll need a seperate case for the lens.

Good waterproof/underwater digital camera, $200 or under?

Melody:)

I've been looking for a waterproof/underwater digital camera online. I've found them as low as the low 100's with horrible reviews. The only one I've found with good reviews is the Olympus - Stylus Tough 14.0-Megapixel and it's $300, which I cant afford. (I'm 15, it's an early birthday present from my mom so I can have it in time to go on vacation)

Could someone please recommend me one with good picture quality above and under water, that's no more than $200?

-thanks:)

Best waterproof/shockproof/etc. digital camera?

Judge Judy

I'm looking for a good digital camera to take on vacations and trips when I will be in environments that include rain, sand, snow, etc.; and to take to the beach and stuff like that. I already own a Canon SX 230 HS that I use as my regular everyday camera, which I love, but I don't want to risk bringing it to the beach or anything because of sand and water dangers plus I want to take pictures in/under water.

I've been doing a lot of research lately and so far, I like the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS3 and the Olympus Tough 8000 (I know there's a newer version of the Olympus out but it can't go half as deep as the 8000, which would be bad for scuba diving trips).

I just wanted to get opinions from some people who have experience with these waterproof etc. cameras and see which ones you all might recommend I check out. Price isn't really a factor either, but I'd prefer one under $300. Thanks! :)

Answer
Hey, why is someone giving TomTom a thumbs down? It is perfectly legit to tell someone to use the Yahoo! guide. They can put in a fwe desires, like price or pixels, and it will lead them to some suggestions.

TomTom, maybe you can just use the link to the page: http://shopping.yahoo.com/b:Digital%20Cameras:20148412;_ylt=AphZjicVJAfeIckOrTY1sUUSssUu;_ylu=X3oDMTBpamdzYzFwBF9zAzIwMTQ4NDEyBHNlYwNiYw-- (You'll have to go there and copy the link to get the whole thing for future answers. You can have it and I won't use it if I see you are using it in the future.)

Anyhow, here's my standard "cheap but good camera" answer.

Some of our best answerers always recommends the Fujifilm FinePix F20 camera as the best-for-less choice. I have to say that I like the sample images at Steve's site (below). If Morey000 or SpaceCowboy show up after me and make this recommendation, choose them as the best answer, because I'm just passing along their suggestion. I have no personal experience with this camera. I see it at B&H Photo (available through Yahoo! Shopping) for $150; $190 with a 1 GB Sandisk memory card.

http://www.steves-digicams.com/2007_reviews/fuji_f20.html
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/specs/Fujifilm/fuji_finepixf20.asp

My brother has the A540 and my mother-in-law has the A530 - on my recommendation - and neither one has stopped speaking to me yet. Based on this and experience with other Canon Powershot cameras, I am now recommending the A550 as a nice and relatively inexpensive camera. The A550, which has more pixels, but offers less user control.

The A550 costs $170 at B&H and, of course, you'll need a memory card.

A550 review: http://www.steves-digicams.com/2007_reviews/a550.html

Consumer Reports from May 2007 has a short article on digital cameras and they recommend 10 different point and shoot cameras in the following order within groups according to camera design:
**COMPACTS**
Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX2 (Overall score 75) [$410]
Kodak EasyShare C875 (Overall score 73) [$165] - Rated better for shutter lag
Nikon Coolpix P4 (Overall score 65)
**SUBCOMPACTS**
Canon Powershot SD500 (Overall score 72)
Casio Exilim EX-Z850 (Overall score 72)
Sony Cybershot DSC-W50 (Overall score 70) [$180] [Similar to W55] - Rated better for shutter lag
Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX3 (Overall score 69) [$200] [Similar to FX-10, FX-12]
Olympus Stylus 720SW (Overall score 61) [Similar to 770SW - $360] (Waterproof)
**ADVANCED COMPACTS ("Near SLR")**
Fujifilm Finepix S6000fd (Overall score 77) [$300] - Rated better for shutter lag
Fujifilm Finepix E900 (Overall score 73) [$250]
[Things change so quickly in digital cameras that I can not find all of these models listed for sale and it's not even May yet. Prices are from B&H Photo, April 2007.]

Any one know anything about waterproof cameras?

Searra

I want to buy a waterproof camera for a project I am doing. I honestly don't know much about them or where to get one. I really don't want to spend a lot but I want a great camera for amazing photos and I am willing to change my price range which the highest at the moment being $600. it would be great if you could tell me about them, where to get them, what is the best to use, etc. I would really appreciate it.

Answer
There are inexpensive waterproof cameras that cost as little as $125 like the Nikon Coolpix S31.

There is a Nikon Coolpix AW-110 which includes GPS, WiFi and can operate deeper than the S31. 18 m for 60 minutes vs. 5 m for an unspecified time

Sure, you can buy a $300 P&S camera and a $300 underwater housing, but then you will have your underwater camera in two pieces that must be combined when you dive.

Canon, Olympus, Pentax also make such underwater cameras. The cool thing is that they are also shockproof and cold weather proof in some cases.

Spend some time on those websites and see which of those companies make the camera that is best for you

What are some good waterproof digital cameras?

frecklefac

I've always thought it was a really cool idea, and lately I've been looking into getting one. I've looked at some from Canon and Olympus. I'm leaning towards Canon's D10 because it gets good reviews, is slightly cheaper than Olympus models, and because I really like Canon cameras.
Anyone that owns this camera or another waterproof camera-
Is it good price considering that it would only get moderate use?
Do you recommend this camera, or another one?
Would I be better off getting a waterproof case for my current camera (a Canon powershot a570)?

Thanks so much!

Answer
Here are 5 top rated waterproof cameras:

1. Canon PowerShot D10

$330, 12.1MP; 3X optical zoom; waterproof to 33 feet
Canonâs first foray into waterproof digital compacts looks like a cross between a Digital ELPH and a diving bell. With a waterproof rating down to 33 feet, itâs among the deepest divers in this category, but its 2.5-inch LCD and optically stabilized 35â105mm (equivalent) f/2.8â4.9 zoom lens arenât at the front of this pack. Like the other cameras here, the D10 is freeze- and shockproof, in this case surviving temperatures down to 14 degrees Fahrenheit and falls of up to 4 feet.

2. Fujifilm Finepix Z33WP

$200, 10MP; 3X optical zoom; waterproof to 10 feet
Borrowing design cues from Fujiâs teen-targeted Z30, this underwater shooter is one of the tiniest and most stylish, as well as the most affordable. Its 2.7-inch LCD is as large as they come on this type of compact. But itâs waterproof only to 10 feet, and its 10MP and 35â105mm (equivalent) f/3.7â4.2 optical zoom arenât groundbreaking.

3. Olympus Stylus Tough 8000

$400, 12MP; 3.6X optical zoom; waterproof to 33 feet
Olympus offers some of the most rugged compact cameras you can get, and its latest fits the mold. You can shoot down to 33 feet underwater, drop the camera from up to 6.6 feet, and use it in temperatures down to 14 degrees Fahrenheit. Plus, its metal construction can withstand up to 220 pounds of pressure. Sensorshift image stabilization combats hand shake, and the zoom, while not league-leading, spans an equivalent 28â102mm f/3.5â5.1.

4. Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS1

$400, 12.1MP; 4.6X optical zoom; waterproof to 10 feet
Panasonic has stepped up to the pool in a strong way with its first waterproof digital camera. Its optically stabilized 28â128mm (equivalent) f/3.3â5.9 zoom offers a nice balance of wide angle for underwater and midrange tele for land-based adventures. At 12.1MP, it affords plenty of resolution, and it has an ample 2.7-inch LCD. While we wish it could go deeper than 10 feet, its 720p video recording should make playing in the backyard pool more fun than ever.

5. Pentax Optio W60

$250, 10MP; 5X optical zoom; waterproof to 13 feet
Pentax was one of the first to offer dunkable digital cameras with its WP series years ago, and now itâs a major force. This model has plenty of room to the left of the lens to hold onto, and we like the 720p video recording, though weâd rather have a faster rate than its 15 frames per second. Its Super Macro mode should be a boon below the surface, letting you focus as close as 0.4 inches from the front of the 28â140mm (equivalent) f/3.5â5.5 lens.

underwater video camera help?

ejl792

im looking for an underwater video camera and something that goes preferably more than 10ft underwater. ive heard about the sanyo e1 but that only goes to 5ft but is that a good camera overall? and are there any other good underwater video cameras?

Answer
The cameras designed for immersion (when they say "5 ft", they're basically saying, swim but don't dive) are never the best camcorders around. Those Sanyos offer average video quality at best. Another one from Panasonic, the SDR-SW20, is similar: operation to 5ft, and moderate at best standard-def video quality. On the other hand, you're only spending $350... can't expect a miracle.

The other option is, of course, to enclose an existing camcorder. If you don't have any, this will certainly up the cost, perhaps by quite a bit.

Awhile back, I got a lower cost enclosure for my Sony AVR-H1 hi-def camcorder. This is from EWA Marine, and it's basically a $200 ziplock bag with a lens window. This worked great, it's supposed to be good for up to one atmosphere (33 feet in saltwater). It's a bit cumbersome, and there's still some resistance to putting your $2000+ camcorder into a plastic bag, even an expensive one. But a hard case for my small camcorder (Canon HV10) ran $700, and for the Sony, at least $1000.

If you're leaning this way, you might even consider pricing the case first, then buying the camcorder to fit it.

Another option... smaller cameras are cheaper to enclose, as you might expect. While a hard enclosure for my Sony could run into the thousands, cases for digital still cameras run much cheaper, many below $200 that are full fledged underwater enclosures... good for 100ft or more. Since almost any digital still camera has a video mode arguably as good as these "waterproof" cameras, I'd consider that.

In fact, my Panasonic DMC-TZ5 probably has a much better video mode... that's 1280x720 at 30p, reasonably clear video (it's not HDV, but it's good enough). That's a $300 camera, and you need an enclosure that's about $220 for it, but then you have 130 ft or so to play with. You really don't get much audio regardless, so the poor quality microphone in most P&S cameras is not a problem.

Help me choose a digital camera..?

Mr. Nobody

I want to buy a camera, but have trouble deciding which one to buy as there are so many to choose from. To start off this will be my first digital camera, even though i didnt have a camera before i still find photography to be one of the most interesting things in life and i see myself spending a lot of time taking pictures and carrying the camera almost everywhere, so the camera should be compact, i dont want to spend loads of money, so it should be around $400 better if less, but i guess i could spend more. As i am not a pro so i dont want all the special features. I consider myself good with technology, so it doesnt matter if the interface is difficult to get used to and i find taking extraordenary pictures more fun, eg Light Graffiti pictures etc.. I would also prefer the camera to be durable so i wouldnt have to worry everytime something unexpected happens, also waterproof feature would be uselful, but thats not nessecary. Thanks
As its an investment i guess i could spend more.. Even up to $600, but no more!

Answer
let me start by saying a couple years ago I got a Nikon Coolpix and it is the worst camera I have ever had the displeasure of using. Whatever you do dont go with the coolpixs.

if you want to get into photography as an art I would actually suggest an SLR camera, but they are not compact, they are rather large and will not fit in your pocket.

Here is a camera that has features like an SLR camera but is not accually a single lens reflex camera:
Canon G9.
It might set you back about 500 bucks BUT. . .

It gives you apiture and shutter speed priority. Those are easy concepts to understand if you want to learn the internet is loads of help. You can do a lot of pretty neet things just with knowing what the aperture size is before taking the shot. It also give you the option of using manual focus if you like that.

But if you dont want to mess with all that I would recommend a SONY. I would reccomend the DSC-T2. The T2 is cool because it has 4gigs of built in memory. I dont know about you but I would love to not need to deal with a separate memory card, I would love to just take shots and have them save into the built in camera hardware. If you dont care then I would say go with the:
SONY Cyber Shot DSC-W130.
Or if you want a little more power and a little bigger screen and are willing to spend some extra money on this the go with the DSC-W170. It just gives you a little more but it might take an extra 100 to get it.

So. . .

Canon G9
Sony cybershot DSC-W130
Sony cybershot DSC-W170

at bestbuy:
w170 is 300bucks
G9 is 500

at Ciruitcity:
W170 is 300 bucks
G9 is 500 minus another 30 or something.

At sonystyle.com:
w130 is 300bucks (i dont know why)
the W170 is 300bucks
the W300 is 350
and the T2 is 350

i hope that helps a little.

At least is gives you my opinion.

so yh thats about what you would pay.

A good, cheap and stylish digital camera?

I need a good compact camera for taking family pictures like on birthdays and occasions. I don't care about megapixels or optical zoom or waterproof as long as the camera quality is good. I want a good-looking camera and of a great brand. My budget is under $100. I would prefer a canon or Sony one but again it should be stylish and have good camera quality. If you have any suggestions please inform me, I'll be grateful.
I've considered to buy nikon coolpix L25. What do you think about that camera? It's good a low price and I wanted to know if it would give good images.

Answer
Actually there are no decent P&S cameras that cost $100 or less.

My guess is you will need to budget for $120 or better to get a camera that will do what you want.

Stylish is a whole different thing. Most people are either budget or performance driven when picking a camera. You have just added a new dimension.

How is the cybershot tx10?

Answer
I was recently looking at buying this camera...

I hope I helped!
If you have anymore questions please let me know by adding to this question, or posting a new one. Thanks!

** The TX10 looks good. The full touch screen on the back could be interesting (not sure if that is a good thing or a bad one) and i can't find the specs for the zoom. Always look at that if your planing on taking pictures from 20+ feet away. Always look at optical zoom (digital zoom can get blurry). Mega Pixels are only important if you're planning on printing the picture any larger then your standard size. Both cameras look good, but I would still recommend the LIMUX!!

what is the best digital waterproof camera?

dutchman12

im looking for a maybe 7-10mp camera that can go at least 20 meters deep and ive got a prica range from $100-$500
so if anyone could help it would be great

Answer
The BEST one will be a good SLR in an underwater camera housing (from IkeLite).

Your budget is not nearly enough for the camera and the housing. And at 20 meters, you will also need lighting...

For comparison ease, start with a Nikon D90, check the compatible underwater housings and lighting... reputable dealers online include adorama and bhphotovideo.

Then check any Canon PowerShot or Sony CyberShot and see if Ewa-Marine has water protection rated for the depth you need... Lighting will continue to be a problem.

I am planning to buy a digital camera, but am confused with which brand to go for. Also I would like to go for a cheap yet powerful one, cause my budget limits me to 10k-15k max. I would prefer a camera which can take snaps in rain, cause that is the time when u need a camera, but u cant take photos in rain.

What is the best underwater camera for scuba diving?

Kyle Maass

I am looking to purchase a camera (probably not a housing for an SLR) for scuba diving. Something not to expensive, probably less than 500. Would the GoPro Hero be a suitable choice, or the SeaLife DC1200?

Answer
There are some nice P&S cameras that can be used down to 10 meters.

Most of the underwater cameras specs will tell you how deep you can dive without damaging the camera

Many are only good to 3 meters, so you will have to spend some time researching

P&S cameras -- http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/sidebyside.asp Olympus SW and Tough camera series as well as one Canon and a few Pentax cameras may fit your needs

GoPro Hero Surf can be used underwater up to 60 meters.

Shooting video, as you know, you will have to supply supplemental light since very little red light penetrates beyond a meter.

What is the best waterproof digital camera currently on the market?

How's My H

I'm a little skeptical on what I should get. Whenever I plan on buying a digital camera all I look for is reviews reviews reviews.

Any suggestions on what I should get? I was thinking on the Olympus Stylus 1030SW, it seems to have nice quality to the pictures and seems durable, but then again I'm skeptical.

Btw I'm going to be using this camera for underwater picture taking only, I already have an SLR and a normal point and shoot for regular shots.

Thanks :]

Answer
Ah, best P&S underwater camera ... yes the Olympus is one of the better P&S underwater camera.

Scientists use underwater housing that can cost nearly double the cost of the camera inside ... usually a nice $2,000 to $10,000 camera.

Best waterproof digital point & shoot?

Zaki

My girlfriend has her heart set on the Panasonic FH1/TS1. The only problem is that it's too expensive. The cheapest I can find is $265 new, used is like $60 bucks cheaper. I'd rather buy new to make sure it works. I really can't afford that, I know she wants a waterproof & she said I don't have to get it for her but I know she really wants it & I want to make her happy. I found a few others that are a little cheaper.

Like the Kodak Playsport, FujiFilm Finepix Z33WP & XP10. Are they any good? Which one is better? There's also a couple more that I've found though they aren't waterproof. However they're cheap & I figured that by summer I can buy a waterproof case. The other 2 are the Fujifilm AX250 & Panasonic Lumix DMC-FH20. Out of all of those cameras which one is the best? Or if you know of a better one for under $200. ^_^
The reason is kinda actually my fault. We both come from a kinda poor family & its more a pride thing. I wanna get the camera for her by myself. Besides she doesn't get an allowance, she'd have to use her holiday money on it. I don't want her to have to do that.

Answer
Your girlfriend is smart. The Panasonic TS1 is a very good waterproof camera (and also records HD video). From the review link below, the Canon D10, Panasonic TS1 and Pentax Option 60W were the best performers of waterproof cameras tested.

The Fujiflim Z33WP is crap and so are Olympus. The Playsport is crap. Remember, if it's real cheap, it's cheap for a reason.

One suggestion...if your girlfriend really has her heart set on the TS1, but it's out of your price range...why doesn't she contribute towards the cost of the camera?

Answer
For that budget, your option for a waterproof camera is quite limited. But here are a few suggestions :-

1. Fuji XP10 (around $110)
2. Kodak Playsport (a waterproof videocam that could actually take photos)

The Fuji is also shockproof but the video quality is not as good as the Kodak. See my link for the list of waterproof cameras that you might want to check.
