DKNINJA

I bought a waterproof camera but unfortunately it got damaged (cracks on the casing) and wondered if you know a way to test if its still waterproof without actually putting it in water (as this may break it if turns out to be no longer waterproof)

Answer
Testing without submersion?

Get a hydrogen gas and inject it inside the camera then get a gas detector to check if there are gas leaking out of the camera body.

Which one of the waterproof camera is the best?

I'm planning to buy a waterproof camera but didn't know which one is good.
Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS1
Olympus Stylus Tough 8000, 3000, 6020?
Canon D10

Answer
I have found Olympus and Canon to be excellent performers. But that said, assuming you pick your camera based on comfort of viewing and operating of the controls (which should be your 1st choice).
Do my 11x 14 test. The first day of ownership, read instructions thoroughly, take a few pictures and have an 11 x 14 print made that same day (cost app. $4.00) and judge the results. If you like them, sharp? good color?- keep the camera. If not return the camera, with original box, instruction book (not written in) & guarantee card (do not fill out or send in until satisfied).

I personally own a 15 yr. old Olympus and the one problem I had was my doing, but Olympus was more than helpful. So " biases test reports aside" Olympus is a great brand.

I live in Australia and I'm going camping for a week over christmas. I've been camping before but I always forget something or think 'I should bring that next time'.

What is a list of things to bring and foods that I can keep without having to drive into town (it's half an hour away from the site) very often during the week? It's a secluded spot in Nowra called Danjera Dam and we don't have an oven or anything just an open fire.

Planning a Menu
What's for dinner?
As an outbound backpacker, your answer to that important question was made days, maybe weeks in advance. When you finally make camp after a full day of vigorous exercise, you're going to want to be happy with the decision you made. You want food that will nourish you, strengthen you, revitalize you and taste really good.

How Much Food Is Enough?
The National Outdoor Leadership School estimates that backcountry travelers burn between 2,500 and 4,500 calories per day, depending on their individual physiology and their activity. That translates into roughly 1.5 to 2.5 lbs. of food per day.

In a diet-conscious society, that may sound like a huge caloric intake. But food is the fuel your body burns as it powers up and down wilderness terrain. Finicky eaters typically morph into indiscriminate chow hounds after a few high-output days on the trail.

Anticipate that you will feel hungry often and that much of your quiet time on the trail will be spent thinking about food. It's true! Plan ahead for this stomach-gnawing reality.

If you're facing a borderline decision about how much or little to carry, take a little more. Feelings of unsatisfied hunger can distract you from the other sensory joys of a great hike. One of the 10 Essentials for an overnight trip, in fact, is a supply of extra food. One day's worth of food is a smart emergency backup.

On the other hand, don't overdo it. A common beginner's blunder is to bring too much food on a trip, forcing you to lug unwanted bulk and weight in your pack. Experience will teach you what amount of food works for you. Consider a few basic guidelines:

Factors to Consider
â¢TasteâEat what you like. Don't try and convert your taste buds to new types of food deep in the backcountry.
â¢CaloriesâDon't inaugurate a diet program during a multi-night hike. You'll need ample calories (and water!) to fight off fatigue and headaches.
â¢NutritionâIt's fine to tear into a candy bar during a trip, but for the long haul you want to rely on complex carbohydrates and proteins. Intelligent quick-eats such as nuts and dry fruits provide a stable flow of energy to your muscles.
â¢Weight and BulkâStick to lightweight and low-bulk foods as much as possible, especially on long journeys.
â¢Ease of

Camcorder with microphone input?

I need a waterproof camcorder to make a documentary, but the guy at the store said that no waterproof camcorders have microphone jacks. is this true?
if not which waterproof camcorders have mic inputs? And where can i get them? (In Australia)

Answer
while it is possible to seal a mic jack to prevent water from entering the camera, no standard mic jack will prevent water from getting on the contacts. if you plan on ocean swimming, the salt water will short out the mic connection electrically. you will be best off to add your narration afterwards in the computer video editor, and use the built-in camera mic for "natural sound".

Anon.

I am going to tenerife in the Easter holidays and although I am very excited I don't know how to prepare for it. I am going wih my swimming club as it's like a training camp, we will be swimming fo two hours every morning and every night very hard. What shall I pack? What do I need to buy?? What are the kind of things I need to wear? What should I take on the plane? Anything else?
Extra info: I am going for one week, without my parents, I am 12
thanks!!! Xx

Answer
Oh la la! so i looked up Tenerife and ur going to be in the islands?
Lucky girl!!!! I am sooooo jealous, but u helped me with my Q so im gonna try to help you with urs.

Ok, for swimming....
At least 2 caps
At least 2-3 suits
Baby Powder (for cap drying)
2 pairs of goggles
Fins, paddles, pull bouy, kickboard if they said to bring those things
Hairbrush and special shampoo and conditioner if you use that after you swim
Pony holders
Moisturizer (I like to use a lotion after I get out of the pool because my skin gets super dry and itchy)
Lotsa Towels--in case you forget to hang one up or want some for ur face or something
Board Shorts or other coverup shorts if you want
Athletic shirts and sweatshirts you can throw on to go to the pool.
Any touch up makeup that you use after you get out. If you are really want to, some of my swim friends wear waterproof makeup in the pool but Idk if this applies to you...
Camera--not a neccessity, but some of my fave pics are of me and my swim friends from different camps by the pool
Water bottle you can bring to drink while swimming
Energy bars

For the plane I would just take lots of entertainment
ex.
Ipod or iPad if you have one and feel comfertable bringing it. Otherwise you may want to bring calling cards or something.
Cell Phone--to keep in touch with ur friends! Make sure you know if it'll work down there!!!
Notebook and pen--so you can write if you want about the trip, but also for the swimming if you are going to have lectures or you want to write down ur new friends names
Books
Pillow and Blanket
Headphones--even if you don't bring an iPod, you can put them in if someone on the flight is like snoring really loud or something and annoying u.
Money, if you want something from the little cart thingy the flight attendents push around.
Snacks

Edit- Okay, I thot of some more stuff.
if you are going to be doing any dryland, I would pack shorts and shirts you can run in, tennies, socks, and a sports bra if you want it.
Swim Bag--u don't want to lug ur suitcase to the pool!!!
Flip Flops u can wear to the pool
Xtra straps or nosepiece for googles--optional
Video cam
Gum for the plane (so ur ears don't pop!)
Rubber bands or retainer if you have braces or something
Sunscreen--if you're gonna be outside
Magazines--for entertainment
Earrings u can swim in. Diamonds and sparklys dull in the pool!!!!

I'll see if I can think of anything else but b4now!
Hope I helped and have an awesome day!

Q. I am thinking about buying one and I was just looking for some reviews on it. Also can you take pictures underwater or does waterproof just mean if you drop it in water that if will not break?

Answer
It's fully waterproof, working down to 10'.
The seals need replacing (at cost) every year to ensure it remains waterproof.

Pages 6 and 7 of the manual (vi and vii) will be of interest to you.

What are some good water proof cameras?

Q. I recently got into diving and im looking for a good waterproof camera, something good for up to 30 ft? let me know of any suggestions. thanks

Answer
I've used the Fuji series with the auxiliary waterproof case. The case is rated for 40 meters. Fuji has had underwater cases for quite a few years for about 10 different models I believe. The current models that have the special underwater housings are the F200 and F80. Both of those cameras have colour correction for underwater photography built in. They are available at a few stores including Henrys. I've used my F30 with underwater housing now for about 4 years and have had extremely good results. Fuji also makes the Z33 and XP10 underwater cameras but they're only good for snorkeling - max depth is 3 meters.

Lots of cameras use AA batteries. My sony cybershot does. My Canon T-70 does. My Minolta Hi-matic does. My Nikon N65 has a grip that can use them.

Not sure what you mean by "bubble". Are you thinking of the waterproof housing for a camera? Or one of those Holgas? Or are you talking about security cameras?

Your question is unclear. Please rephrase it.

Whats a good video camera for snowboarding?

Cody

Im looking for an HD video camera that I can use to film snowboarding stuff. Id be willing to spend 200-400 dollars, and I was wondering what cameras offered good quality picture and solid features for this price range.

Answer
Are you looking for a regular video camera or POV?

If you're looking at POV's (Point of View) then there's basically three options. I've spent weeks upon weeks looking at and researching these three companies.
Contour - http://contour.com/products
GoPro - http://gopro.com/products/
Drift - http://driftinnovation.com/drift-hd-action-camera/

The top competitors from each company are the GoPro HD Hero 2, Contour +, and Drift HD. They're all pretty new so there won't be as many reviews as for their older models. I'll give you what I like and hate about each.
Gopro - Good - Waterproof, HD, Good video quality, Good stabilization, Lots of mounting accessories
Bad - Kinda bulky and not very sleek, video seems a bit saturated, menu is awful

Contour - Good - Sleek and small, HD, Good video quality, lots of features like GPS and bluetooth view finder that syncs with your smartphone (pretty cool).
Bad - Image stabilization isn't as good as the others, only water resistant (but you can buy a case)

Drift - Good - Sleek and small, HD, Good video quality, great menu, lcd playback/viewfinder on camera.
Bad- Only water resistant (you can buy a case), not as many mounting accessories as the others

what depth are you planing to go to
the Olympus 1030 claims its waterproof to around 10m. but Ive heard some horror tales where its leaked. however you do pay a price optically for the 1030's the picture quality isn't as good as similarly priced compact cameras, but then again those cameras aren't as bombproof as the 1030

all the SLR makers including Olympus produce cameras and cases

if you are going down the SLR route then the Olympus E4xx series is the smallest and lightest SLR on the market, and it does have a dedicated underwater case made by Olympus

Digital Camera Case to go more than 10 metres?

hi, i have a kodak easyshare v1003 and am looking for a underwater/ waterproof case that can go more than 10 metres. i found the seashell which seemed perfect but to my luck my camera was one of the few it didnt fit. does anyone know any cases similar to this? or just one of those bags that will go deeper? thanks

Answer
You usually need a rigid housing for depths greater than 10m as the water pressure can press buttons on cameras in flexible pouches at this depth.

If they don;'make one, you'll have to buy a compact & housing package. Some here;

I want to take underwater photos in shallow reefs

Answer
Two questions - how deep are you going to go & what's your budget?

Shallow/cheap options - you can either buy a waterproof digital camera (usually ok for swimming pool depths - 2-3m or so) or you can use a flexible housing for a camera you already have (usually ok for 5-8m or so).

Fuji finepix is quite good at around £100;
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Fujifilm-FinePix-XP10-Digital-Camera/dp/B00342UTO8/ref=sr_1_7?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1300631604&sr=1-7

or the Canon Powershot D10 for just over £200;
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Canon-PowerShot-Digital-Camera-Optical/dp/B001T9NH7E/ref=sr_1_12?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1300631604&sr=1-12

A selection of flexible housings;
http://www.camerasunderwater.co.uk/ewa_marine/d_stills/index.html

If you are going deeper than about 10m you need a rigid housing, otherwise water pressure pushes buttons you don't want pushing. A selection of compact camera & housing packages here;
http://www.camerasunderwater.co.uk/d_stills/packages.html

These will be a few hundred pounds for both camera & housing.

At the top end of the scale is housings for DSLR's - these are several thousand pounds worth once you've bought strobes/ports as well.

DSLR, Mirrorless, Bridge Superzoom or Advanced Compact Camera?

waterproof camera canon 7d on ... 7D . This article reviews the Canon 7D and compares its underwater
waterproof camera canon 7d image

Jake

I've been looking into DSLR cameras for a couple months now and cameras like the T3i, 60D, D3200, D5200, D7000 have been surfacing a lot.

I've since looked into superzooms like the Canon SX50 HS which has a 50x zoom (24-1200mm) and take pretty good pictures for only a 1/2.3" sensor.

I've also looked into cameras like the Sony RX100 with a 1" sensor. One of the highest praised compact cameras.

There's the option of the Sony NEX series as well.

I'm looking for phenomenal image quality but also a lot of versatility. For some reason I'm standoffish about Nikon's because I owned a T4i, even though I returned it, I like the lens selection from Canon and such. I've been looking at reviews of sensors on the dxp or whatever site that is and the D5200 scored an 84 compared to a 66 for the T3i, a 66 for the RX100, a 70 for the 60D, a 47 for the SX50 HS and an 81 for the D3200 but that is also shooting RAW. Help me decide!

Answer
Honestly the only people who pay attention to lens tests done in a controlled lab setting are posers at best - the type who show up at camera club meetings and brag about how this lens or that lens they own can resolve x number of line pairs per millimeter but never show any of their results using that lens.

My personal prejudices automatically eliminate any "Bridge Superzoom" because of their tiny sensors with far too many pixels and their heavily compromised permanently attached zoom lenses.

I'm also less than impressed with Compact System Cameras because all of them - Sony, Nikon, Canon, Olympus, Panasonic - use a lens mount that isn't compatible with their big brother DSLR cameras without an adapter and some of the adapters are pretty pricey.

So that leaves us with the current DSLR crop from Sony, Pentax, Nikon and Canon.

The Sony SLT series - a37, a58, a65, a77, a99 - all use the legacy Minolta Maxxum "A" lens mount that dates back to 1985. There are still a lot of previously owned Minolta Maxxum AF lenses available and all of them are fully compatible with with the SLT series of cameras.

The Pentax K-30 is currently the lowest-priced Weather Resistant (WR) DSLR on the market. Although WR doesn't mean the camera is waterproof it does mean that you can use the K-30 in the rain or in very dusty conditions without worry. Also, the K-30 still uses a variant of the Pentax "K" lens mount that dates back to 1975. There are probably more manual focus "K" mount lenses available than you'd care to count plus all the AF "K" mount lenses made before the digital takeover of photography.

Both Sony and Pentax have a focusing motor in their camera bodies as well as their respective version of Image Stabilization (IS). Any AF lens made for either will auto focus as they should and any lens used becomes a stabilized lens.

Nikon still uses the "F" lens mount that dates back to around 1959 so any Nikon lens made since then (with a couple of very rare lenses) can be used on a modern Nikon DSLR although there may be limitations as to functionality. However, the entry-level models - D3100, D3200, D5100, D5200 - all lack a focusing motor in the camera body so only the more expensive AF-S lenses will auto focus on them. Nikon also has their version of IS (Nikon calls it VR) in some but not all of their lenses. So with Nikon you get to pay over and over for a focusing motor and lens stabilization.

Canon abandoned their "FD/FL" lens mount for the "EF" lens mount when they introduced their Rebel EOS auto focus 35mm film cameras in 1988. To further complicate matters, Canon now offers two different lens mounts - the "EF-S" which can only be used on their crop-sensor entry-level DSLR cameras (T3, T3i, SL1, T5i, 60D/60Da and 7D) and the "EF" which can be used on any of their DSLR models whether crop-sensor or full-frame. Canon has always had the focusing motor in their lenses and, like Nikon, chose to place their version of IS in some but not all of their lenses.

So that's my breakdown of the Big 4. Go to a camera shop and handle the different models and go with the one that you like best.

Is canon eos 7d waterproof?

Ro P

canon eos 7d

Answer
Dear God, no...It is NOT waterproof. It has some weatherseals around most opening (particularly the lens mount, battery compartment and memory card doors. Most of the buttons also have rubber gaskets but, the weather "seals" are largely meant to provide moderate protection from dust and very light precipitation, not a swin in the ocean or your local swimming pool. If you need a truly waterproof DSLR, you need to buy a waterproof housing from Ikelite, Sea&Sea, or a similar manufacturer for your particular DSLR. It should be noted these housings cost as much as the camera if not more.

No. Or why buy an waterproof camera?

Read pages 6 and 7 of the manual.

Remember that it's recommended to replace the seals every year. (page 7).

How to make two different videos (filmed with different cameras) the same size in Adobe Premier?

Jesus Frea

I filmed most the videos with a fujifilm XP waterproof camera and the rest I filmed with my Nikon D5000. In adobe premier the fuji videos display full screen but when I add Nikon videos to the film there is a black border around it, it there anyway to make the Nikon ones play full screen along with the fuji ones as well?
Thanks!
Fujifil XP60 (sorry I didn't specify this earlier)

Answer
The aspect ratio of the two cameras are different.

In the future, shoot with both cameras set to either HD or Full HD. The matching of correct aspect ratios it the easiest way to achieve this.

For now, you may have to crop into the Nikon footage to match that of your Fujifilm XP.

Since you did not tell us which XP type camera you have, it is hard to give you an exact answer. Some can only shoot at HD (1280 x 720p), other Full HD (1920 x 1080p).

If your Fujifilm camera can only shoot in HD, then shoot the video using your Nikon at the same resolution

Landscape /underwater photography?

eccho75

What's the dealio with cameras.
When i look for one for either Landscape photography or underwater photography what should i be looking for?
If bigger MegaPixels= higher resolution does that equal more definition in the image?
Can anyone recommend cameras for under 400$ or specific lenses or filters? Would a polarised filter be useful for landscape? are they costly ?
Are these too many questions :| ?
ill be literally underwater :)
Ah thanks for the recommendation.
I've done manual photography and worked with film for two years but i cant afford the constant film, i don't have a darkroom and it's too expensive for me to get my photos developed at a lab. So i thought i would invest in a good digital SLR.
Problem is .....i don't know what to look for ....

Answer
You are looking at two very different kinds of photography. However, with the right equipment one camera can be used for both.

Your idea of investing in a DSLR is correct. It merely becomes a question of which DSLR. Since you've used a film camera the transition will be much easier for you. If you have several lenses for your film camera then you'd be smart to stay with that same brand of DSLR - unless your film camera is a Canon F series which used the FD lens mount or an Olympus OM series or a Minolta SRT or X series. Unfortunately lenses for those cameras are not compatible with their current DSLR counterparts.

When Canon introduced the auto focus Rebel 35mm film cameras they abandoned the FD lens mount for the EF mount.

When Minolta introduced the world's first full-featured auto focus 35mm SLR (the Minolta Maxxum 7000, 1985) they abandoned the SR lens mount for the A-mount. The current Sony DSLR cameras use the A-mount.

When Olympus adopted the 4/3 format for their DSLR cameras they abandoned the OM mount.

Nikon has lens compatibility dating back almost 50 years. Almost every Nikkor lens ever made can be used with the current Nikon DSLR cameras.

Pentax is still using the K-mount first introduced in 1975 so any K-mount lens ever made can be used on their current DSLR cameras.

One bonus offered by Sony and Pentax is they have their respective versions of Image Stabilization (IS) in the camera body. That means that a 20 + yr. old Minolta maxxum AF lens on a Sony A300 will become an IS lens, just a a 30 + yr. old Pentax lens will on a Pentax K200D. Nikon and Canon can't make that claim since they have their respective versions of IS only in certain lenses.

Now back to landscapes and underwater photography.

For landscapes a tripod is one of the best accessories you can have. A good wide-angle is also needed. You also need to know how to maximize your Depth of Field (DOF) with your camera and lens. One of the best places to learn this is at: http://www.dofmaster.com/dofjs.html Here you can calculate DOF for any lens. f-stop, focal length and subject distance.
If you're unsure as to what DOF actually is go to: http://www.dpreview.com/learn/?/key=depth+of+field This is a good, eay to understand explanation.

I know from yrs. of experience that if I focus my 21mm lens at 6 feet and use f16 my DOF will be from 2'-2" to infinity. I shoot in Aperture Priority and use a cable release to trip the shutter. The shutter speed is whatever the camera sets and since I use a trpod its not important. Obviously you'll want to be in manual focus since you probably won't have a subject 6 feet away in your landscape.

(NOTE: Shutter speed would, of course, be important if its a windy day. Then I might use a higher ISO since I refuse to give up f16).

So for the best results in landscape photography:
1) Use a tripod
2) Shoot at your camera's highest resolution
3) Use a low ISO
4) Use Aperture Priority
5) Use manual focus
6) Use a cable release or the camera's self-timer to release the shutter

For underwater photography you'll need an underwater housing for your camera. These are very pricey. You can check here:

http://www.scuba.com
http://www.marinevisions.com
http://www.housingcamera.com
http://www.squidoo.com/underwatercamerahousings
http://www.ikelite.com
http://www.ewamarine.com

If you plan to go deeper than a meter or so you'll probably need a waterproof flash or other light source.

In my opinion, unless you plan on doing a whole lot of underwater photography, one of the Olympus Stylus SW series of water proof and shock proof cameras might be a really cheap alternative.

****** EDIT ******

I forgot to mention that every lens you own should have its own UV/Haze filter to protect the front element. You'll also want a circular polarizer to darken a blue sky and remove glare/reflections from glass, water, snow, sand and painted metal - but not from polished metal. I suggest buying your filters in a "thin" or "slim" mount for use with wide-angle lenses. Don't waste money and risk image quality with cheap filters. Buy Hoya, B+W, Heliopan or Tiffen brands. Add a lens cloth and you're good to go.

I have decided to do more scuba diving & love photography on an amateur basis. I have a digital for family pics. I would like to take nice pics underwater. But the disposables are limited in their capabilities. I am just a family picture taker & I do not want to spend too much. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
I see you are not aware that an open water scuba diver goes 100-150 feet under the water.
10 feet of water is for swimming, no scuba diving. Thanks for the efforts though

What underwater Camera do you think??

Denise L

I will be going on my first scuba diving trip, i am very excited, and i want to be able to snap great pictures of everything and anything, and have decently clear pictures,
We will be going down no more then 25 ft a little under 1 atmosphere,
What camera under $50-$60 with a flash that will enhance colors, be best for this trip, we will be diving off the island of Freeport, Bahamas at around 8am to 1pm.. so the water will be fairly clear.. i have done some research online and just dont know what it is i should look for in a camera and what would be best at that depth.
Please Help..!!
Thank you in Advance :)

p.s.. $50 to $60 is what i want to spend, but i do not want to really go more then $100, it is not a camera i will use more then 2 or 3 times..

Answer
Your price range, none rated for 25 feet. The best you'll find is one of those disposables that's waterproof. They're dirt cheap at just under 20 bucks but the bad news is that they are generally rated for just 16 feet. 25 ft would probably spell the end of it. You might, just might...find one of those waterproof bags that will fit an existing camera that you own. I'm unsure of their depth rating however.
If I were in your shoes and with that budget I'd rent one. You should be able to rent a digital or film camera at any decent dive shop at your destination. Preferably you'll want one with strobe...not flash. Flash will give you some backscatter if there are any particles suspended in the water column. A strobe will help eliminate that. No strobe and you'll be more or less limited to macros (close ups). Your wide angle or long distance shots will suffer.

I want a digital camera that takes pics with sharp detail?

Jess

I am looking into buying a small digital camera that takes pictures with sharp detail, zoom doesn't matter really as much. Looking to spend under $400 US if at all possible. I want one that will fit into a purse or pocket, no permanently protruding lenses. Waterproof a plus but by no means a requirement. Any recommendations?

What is the best float strap for an underwater digital camera?

L F

I read a few reviews about a float strap for a digital camera. Which is the best one? I am looking for the one that really works well and comfortable while you are snorkeling in the water.

Answer
Personally, I have tested a dozen differnt camera float straps over the past three months for a new $300 underwater camera. First, avoid the Chums Waterproof Camera Float. While it looks nice, it has been prone to poor stitching resulting in camera's dropping deep to the bottom. Just read the reviews on Amazon. Second, make sure the float you like can handle the weight of your camera. Third, I personally like float that have multiple folds so they fold up flat in case you want to put it in your pocket. Forth, which ever one you end up with, test it in the bathtub before the open water, and pull at all the seams firmly to make sure it's well assembled.
I personally like the surprisinglly inexpensive CowboyStudio strap (<$6). It's at Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0042GFQRA/o0d81-20/

How to make two different videos (filmed with different cameras) the same size in Adobe Premier?

waterproof camera 720p image

What is better: Underwater camera or an underwater camera case?

waterproof digital camera costco on ... for Select Nikon DSLR Cameras (Retail Package): NIKON: Camera & Photo
waterproof digital camera costco image

Nick from

My Situation: I'm going to a family reunion in Hawaii in a couple of weeks, and was thinking taking pictures while snorkeling may be fun. I could buy one of those $10 disposable underwater film cameras, but since I go into caves a lot which are wet, I thought getting something not disposable could be useful there also. I don't want to spend too much money, but am exploring my options.

What I've tried so far: I went to REI the other day, and bought a $30 heavy duty underwater plastic baggie with a hard lens opening that goes over the camera lens part. I tried it out with the digital camera I already have and noticed the pictures are okay if I don't use the flash, but once I use the flash the pictures come out very cloudy. That was the AquaPac brand, and I'm not sure if the DiCaPac brand name underwater baggie would be any better or not. As an alternative, I'm not sure if those "hard case" underwater housings take care of this "flash problem", although with how much they cost for my particular snapshot camera model, it may be cheaper just to buy a real underwater camera. I'd also be worried that a hard case housing wouldn't be useful if I decide to upgrade cameras later on, since they're specific to the camera model?

So, moving the story forward, at Costco there's an underwater camera usually $300, but I just bought it on sale for $150, trying to figure out if I should open it or return it. It's a Nikon Coolpix AW100. It's waterproof to 33 ft, drop proof to 5 ft, and has "underwater mode" (although the camera I already have has an "aquarium mode", not sure if that would help or not).

My Question: I'm not sure if it would be best to go with the Nikon AW100, or get a better underwater heavy duty baggie case with the hard lens to go with my existing digital camera (so that I can always upgrade my digital camera later on), or some other option?

IT'S NOT NEEDED TO READ BELOW UNLESS MORE DETAILS ARE NEEDED:

The underwater camera I found at Costco is http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-COOLPIX-Waterproof-Digital-Camouflage/dp/B008JI0R8U/ref=sr_1_4?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1365876725&sr=1-4&keywords=Nikon+AW100

If I do get some underwater housing, the digital camera I have now is a Canon Powershot A720 IS that I got in 2007 http://www.amazon.com/Canon-PowerShot-A720IS-Digital-Stabilized/dp/B000V1VG2E/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1365875483&sr=8-1&keywords=Canon+Powershot+A720+IS

The type of underwater housing which gave me foggy pictures when using the flash was http://www.amazon.com/Aquapac-Small-Camera-Case-Shown/dp/B0012BRAFY/ref=sr_1_24?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1365875732&sr=1-24&keywords=aquapac+underwater+case

The housing which I haven't tried but don't know if it would be better is http://www.amazon.com/Dicapac-WP-ONE-Digital-Camera-Waterproof/dp/B005IAXVMG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1365875559&sr=8-1&keywords=dicapac+waterproof+case

Answer
At a given price a non-waterproof camera is usually a better picture taker than a compact waterproof camera. If you can combine the better non-waterproof camera with a dedicated underwater housing, the proper weight for net neutral buoyancy, and some silica gel packs inside the housing to prevent condensation, you can probably get better underwater pictures that way than with a compact waterproof camera.
As for using a one-size-fits-many housing, I haven't tried it, but I would not be optimistic about it. Access to controls could be difficult. I don't know if it can work with weights. If there is positive buoyancy, you will be fighting it instead of taking pictures with it.

Answer
The Nikon AW100 is one of the better underwater cameras. I'd keep it.

I never liked those baggies. They are OK for above water use - such as at the beach where the camera might get wet, but they are no good at all for snorkeling.

Also realize that there are two defacto standards for underwater compact cameras. Those that go to 3meters and those that go to 10meters like the Nikon. There are also some cameras that can exceed that depth rating a bit (like the Nikon AW110).

Thing is, depth ratings with compact cameras/housings/bags are for "static" (still) water for 1 hour. If you put the camera into a river, surf, or have an ocean current, there will be increased water pressure on the camera, which necessitates having a deeper rating.

This increased pressure may exceed the 3M rating of the lower end underwater cameras and bags, even if you do not go to their rated depth, and may result in damage. This is why I never recommend 3M rated cameras/bags for anything but above water use in wet areas - as I take a conservative approach to this.

Underwater housings are indeed designed for one camera, so if that camera becomes obsolete and you have to replace it with another model, the housing will be no good. However, housings are typically rated to 200m, so they are not usually needed unless you are going scuba.

Here is my take on the applicability of the various bags, cameras, and housings:

- Above water use in wet environments: bag or 3M rated camera.
- Snorkeling: 10M rated camera.
- Scuba: 200M rated housing.

Also realize that there is a color shift to the blue when you use a camera underwater. So to get a properly color balanced photo, you need to use a RED filter, or manually adjust the color balance of your camera. This can be tricky to do, and most (if not all) underwater cameras have an underwater color balance setting that will provide the correct color balance.

With some cameras, you may have to set the scene mode to underwater to use this mode, and other cameras may do this automatically.

The aquarium mode in your camera may set the blue-shift color balance correctly, but it might also only make the fishes look more vivid. But some of the older Canon cameras did have optional underwater housings available, so the aquarium mode may also work for underwater use. You might see if you can find an old Canon housing for your Canon.

I have an Olympus 8010 underwater camera which works well enough, but I would have bought the Nikon AW100 if it had been available when I bought mine.

I love photography and am looking to buy a legit, high tech, digital camera. What are the best out there?

mysteryyyy

I prefer to have the options of having an attachable fisheye lens, and possibly the option of a waterproof digital camera. Say money is not an issue... what cameras are most reccommended?

Answer
Olympus makes pretty good water proof point and shoot cameras. Shock resistant too.

Fish eyes are typically used on SLRs, which will cost you a quit a bit more (especially if you want to go under water). You might be able to get a fish-eye adapter for a point & shoot. Check B&H Photo for a comprehensive inventory and very good prices.

Note to the other poster, you can get an underwater case for an SLR, but they typically run about $2000 for a hard case. Ewa-Marine makes soft "Zip-Loc" style bags for about $200, but the optics aren't as good.

Whenever I have a question/problem such as yours, I read the user's guide (aka "the manual").
It is amazing just how much I always learn from that.

If that doesn't help (or if I'm interested in a product I don't own), I check the manufacturer's website.
They have descriptions and specs for their gadgets, often have user forums, and the decent manufacturers all let you download the manuals in electronic form (so losing the book is no longer a problem).

99% of the time that does the trick.

There could be a problem with your camera, but with any luck you're simply in the wrong mode, or some such minor issue. Hopefully the manual will solve your problems for you.

waterproof camera difficulties!!!?

Hey guys . I just purchased a waterproof camera about a week ago and took some pics tonight that i wanna post. problem is when i connect it to the comp, it wont read it .. its a fujifilm Z33

thanks!!

Answer
The first thing I would do, is installing the drivers (your camera should have a CD), so the PC will recognize the camera for the transfer of files. If you are using a new memory card, make sure is formatted before you start taking photos. Hope this helps.
