Going to Hawaii and looking to buy some snorkel gear and an under water digital camera. Any advice?

I was reading about both snorkel gear and underwater cameras, and there are so many choose from. I was hoping for some real people advice. While your here... any advice on trips to Maui would be great too! Thanks (I WILL choose the best answer!)

Answer
You can buy a decent snorkel set from Sam's Club or Costco. Yes, we have both wholesale retailers on the island of Oahu. You can get snorkels, goggles and fins for around $50-$60 (as a set). There are also a lot of places that rent snorkels, but I wouldn't trust them. If you plan to buy snorkels, etc. here, I would suggest either wholesale retailer. We also have Sports Authority (overpriced) and a shop called McCully Bike & Sporting Good. Whatever you do ... avoid buying sporting goods in Waikiki. Waikiki is one large tourist trap. Venture a little further and you'll save a lot.

Also, if you are on the island of Oahu, try snorkeling at Hanauma Bay on the east side of the island. I don't know too much about digital cameras, but Kodak just came out with the Kodak Playsport Digital Camcorder and it has some pretty rave reviews. The other plus, it's only $150 + or - a few bucks, and it is waterproof up to 10 feet deep.

I don't know too much about Maui. It's sad, but we islanders don't always travel far. I heard they have a rope course where you can jet down the valley. Another touristy options...visiting Haleakala. Sorry I can't help much in this department.

Which underwater camera is the best?

Q. I'm really looking into getting an underwater camera.
I want one that is not very expensive, but great quality.
I have narrowed my options to two choices ...

1.) fujifilm finepix xp10
2.) fujifilm finepix z33wp.

for those of you who are camera 'experts',
can you PLEASE help me out.

what is a good valued underwater camera?!

I appreciate your answers,

Dee Byrd.

Fujifilm FinePix Z33WP 10 MP Waterproof Digital Camera with 3x Optical Zoom

REVIEW:
If you're a novice at photography and want to take pictures either out of or under water, you couldn't ask for a bettter camera. Especially for the price. Either the people who gave this camera a bad review didn't know how to use it, they have too high a expectation, or are expert photographers who may need a more expensive camera. Or perhaps their camera just didn't work properly.

I wasn't expecting a lot from this camera based on the price and some reviews, but because of some of the shared photos, I decided to give it a try. If it didn't work, I at least didn't spend a whole lot. What I got was an amazing camera for a great price. I'm an extremely picky person and it takes a lot to impress me, but that is exactly what this camera did. Since I was snorkeling and floating on top of the water bobbing up and down, fighting against the current and using mostly the zoom feature my expectation was a lot of blurred pictures. So much so, that I wasn't even eager to get back to the ship to load the pictures onto my laptop to see what I got. When I finally was mentally set for a big disappointment I loaded my pictures onto my laptop. What I saw couldn't have surprised or excited me more. The pictures were beautiful and the movies I took were phenomenal. If you are a novice or a intermediate photographer, I highly, highly recommend this camera especially if you want to take underwater photos. I think it does great out of the water too. I have uploaded a few of the pictures I took so you can check those out. My two disappointments were that it was overcast (Fugifilm has no control over that)and I think some of the photos would have been better had the sun been out showing off all the colors of the fish and coral. And that the camera is only good for 3 meters under water. So I wasn't able to swim to the bottom of the ocean with it to take pictures. I had to stay on the surface. Regardless, it had the zoom that worked perfectly. One other nice thing was that I didn't have to worry about it if it rained or got wet while out on the ocean.

What are the really useful things to take to a Music Festival when camping?

I am soon to attend the V-Festival weekend, I went last year and loved it - but I wondered if there was anything that any of you have taken to a general camping experience and found really useful? (Solar powered phone chargers... etc etc)

Answer
You can get phone chargers that work off AA batteries but they only put a small emergency charge into the phone. All the phone shops sell them.
Maplin do one for £3
http://www.maplin.co.uk/module.aspx?moduleno=222899 . . . . .
Take a load of AA batteries and only take kit that uses AA batteries, not funny sizes. Life's easier then.
One of the biggest selling points for cameras etc for me is whether they use AA batteries.
Take an old phone, not your best one. Swop the SIM card and if the phone gets lost you've still got the expensive one at home.
Charge the phone just before you go and keep it switched completely off as much as you can to conserve the battery.
You can sometimes find phone batteries in the £1 basket in BT shops....if you're lucky there will be one to fit your phone. I've got three for my Samsung B2100 for long hiking trips but the phone goes for over a week without charging anyway and it's waterproof and tough....it's an expedition phone.
http://teck.in/samsung-b2100-tough-waterproof-dustproof-shockproof-rugged-mobile-phone.html . . . . . .
For security of all personal stuff a waist-belt fitting bag is ideal. Round the world backpackers use them, and all the locals in some of the more dangerous cities like Maputo and in Much Hadham-under-Gotchaville when the Red Lion closes at night.
They are ideal for festivals for keeping cash, train tickets, phone etc. Put it inside your sleeping bag when you sleep.
http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090825141758AAMEhQs . . . . .
Very thin seen better days towels are far better for festivals and camping trips than thick ones. They are less bulky to pack, do the job, and then dry out easier. Take a few. They soon get mucky in festival campgrounds.
Also take some old wiping cloths you can chuck out afterwards and some Baby Wet Ones or similar alcohol wipes for freshening up and generally cleaning things and a few rolls of toilet paper, which also makes good wiping cloths for messed up phones etc and drying them after the wet wipe treatment.
Half a dozen plastic carrier bags make good storage to tie old worn clothes into and for rubbish bags for the tent.
Keep tents organised and then they get a bit of space in them. Roll up the sleeping bags when they are not in use to keep them drier, and hang them out when the Sun shines to air them out.
Keep the tent as well ventilated as you can to keep condensation to a minimum.
Some spare tent pegs and a length of washing line to cut up for guy lines are very useful, and a groundsheet from B&Q or Homebase etc makes a good cover for a tent and keeps it more stable in the wind, and gives you total waterproofing. You can peg it down all the way round as extra security for the tent when you are away from it.
Also, if you use one to pitch the tent over you'll have a dry floor.
Dome tents do well in wind because of the shape but are less easy to cover. Tunnel and ridge tents cover easily and tunnel tents have the best space/weight/packed bulk ratio and also have excellent wind performance.
Coleman are great value and Vango are great too but are more expensive. Cheap tents can be covered as above and then they are just as good for festivals as expensive ones when the monsoon rains come.
Tents, and getting the sleeping bag back into the bag it came in....or into another one.

http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090927054511AA8JzCs . . . . . . .
A flying saucer type of LED lamp will be good for tent lighting and walking around and an LED rear cycle lamp makes a good soft tent light at night.
A small Camping Gaz stove and a couple of cartridges, and a lightweight steel bowl, will get you hot tea and coffee and some soups and stews, fry-ups, whatever. They can be bought for less than£10 and will save more than that just on coffees and egg and bacon baps over a three day festival.
A notebook is always handy and a pencil. Pencils write on damp paper. Ball point pens don't and fibre tip pens can smudge all over the place when the paper is damp so that when you try to read it later it's impossible.
Pencils are the great writing technology of the age. They actually work in tough situations. A true survival tool for safe and reliable recording of valuable infornmation and saves embarrassment later when you need a name or a number and can't decipher it.
Take the least amount of stuff you can get away with. Anything you take is at risk of getting lost or damaged. The less you take the fewer worries you've got and the more you can concentrate on enjoying the festival.
Have a great time.

What should I pack in my bag tomorrow?

MBK112<3

I'm going to a summer day camp, actually for the whole summer.
We eat lunch inside, so I don't need packed lunch or anything.
I'm already bringing gum, water, my cellphone, (we're not supposed to, but hey.) my camera, candy, advil (I have hooorrible headaches).
Anything else?

It's outdoors all day, we're with an adult counselor, and I'm in the LIT group, where you train to be a counselor or something. I don't really know, heh

Answer
Sounds like fun :)

What I think you should bring is:

~ Sunscreen, really strong sunscreen
~ Bathing suit
~ About 7 or so changes of clothes with underwear/bras to match it
~ Chargers for your camera and mobile
~ Band-aids... lots of band-aids
~ Bug spray
~ Flashlight
~ A tiny pair of scissors, they come in really handy
~ LIVESTRONG BRACELET, that's my good luck charm =P
~ Make-up... if you want to put it on, I wouldn't but if you'd like to bring it and make sure the mascara is WATERPROOF, otherwise it'll melt in the sun =P
~ Shampoo/Conditioner, tooth brush/paste, whatever you use daily in the bathroom....

That's all I can think of =P

Have fun !

And if you'd like you can help me with my question:

JCBeach

I just returned from a trip to Maui and used a couple of disposable underwater cameras. I have had similar cameras/film developed and have been disappointed with the quality at Walgreen's and CVS. I live in Santa Monica, but am willing to drive (hopefully not too far) to get decent developed pics. I would appreciate any suggestions. Mahalo!

Answer
One place that I'm usually dealing with quite often to get my photos printed is >> Fotoworks << which they just moved to Tustin just recently.

How much would a digital underwater camera cost?

Tanya

I had a disposable underwater camera this summer that cost about 15$, and 10$ to develop the film. Half of the pictures didn't even turn out that well, so I was thinking of investing in a digital underwater camera. I think in the long run it would save me money, since I'm not paying so much to develop 50/50 pictures.
I just want a cheap one, nothing fancy. Does anyone know the price range?

Answer
if you want high quality, and under water ability you are probably looking at $50-$150

I am considering in buying a digital camera and I really want a good one that is sweatproof, waterproof, has really god zooming.... etc etc. So what exactly should someone be looking for in a camera? Can anyone sugest to me any type of good cameras and any good websites? Thank you very much in advance.

Answer
The Best Sweatproof and Waterproof camera at the moment is the Olympus Stylus 1030SW. You can see it at Amazon here: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0011E87RM/?tag=amazon-digital-cameras-20

The optical zoom is limited to just 3.6x Optical which isnât very long.

Another option would be to buy a âNon-Waterproofâ camera and then buy a Camera Housing for it. The Camera Housing fits over the camera and provides protection from water. You can view some of Canon Camera Housings here: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=search&A=search&Q=&ci=0&sb=ps&sq=desc&sortDrop=Relevance&ac=&bsi=&bhs=t&shs=waterproof+case&ci=5237&at=Brand_Canon&basicSubmit=Submit+Query

Hope that helps :)

What is the best digital camera for traveling?

Brittany

I love the digital camera I have now, its an Olympus that's super tiny and takes great pictures during the day, however it takes horrible pictures at night even though its has special settings! It still works fine for a 4 year old camera BUT I will be studying abroad next semester and I would like to take pictures at night as well as the day!! I'm looking for a small camera with high quality pictures. I'm also on a budget so I want the most value for my money! Any suggestions??

Answer
Cameras with the best image quality aren't always the best travel cameras.
I think the following criteria are important for travel cameras :
* Low cost (in case of damage, accidental loss or theft).
* Light weight
* Wide angle lens.
* High zoom ratio.
* Good low light performance
* Waterproofing.
* Cold weather performance.
* battery life
My choice is Canon PowerShot D10 12.1 MP Waterproof Digital Camera with
3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5-inch LCD.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001SER460?ie=UTF8&tag=digitsy-post3-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B001SER460
It's a very good camera for traveling. Both in and out of water. I was a little nervous
to put this in water. I just got back from Hawai. Where I put it in all kinds of water
and depths and it worked perfectly! There areso many types of scene selections such as Sunset, Beach, Landscape, Kids and Pets, Aquarium, Indoor, Night and Underwater. I have got some great photos with this. The battery life is great. Video quality and audio is great too. I love this camera.

A Camera can take pictures underwater and out of water? (With good quality without an blurriness)

A Camera can take pictures of fish and sea mammals under water behind a clear glass window at an aquarium? (With good quality without any blurriness of the movements and flash reflection on the glass)

A Camera can take pictures of anything with fast movements with better quality? (without blurriness of the movements) Like birds flying or mammals shaking all the water off of them.

A Camera can take pictures of anything at night or in the dark with better quality?

If you know what types of cameras that can do these things, please tell me.
@John - I see your point. Thank you for your time, John.
Then..... Why do some of the photos that I've seen have better quality even underwater, at night, and fast movements?

Should I show some examples?

Answer
For underwater photography there are waterproof cameras. There are also underwater housings available for many cameras. Generally you pay a price in money for the quality or quality for the money to be waterproof. It is best to use a wrist strap with some floatation when using an underwater camera.
The best digital camera that is immersible without an additional housing is currently the Nikon AW1, about $800 with waterproof 11-27.5mm kit lens. $1000 for a kit that includes the 11-27.5mm plus the waterproof 10mm f2.8. Currently this camera seems to be backordered everywhere.
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1006603-REG/nikon_27667_nikon_1_aw1_with.html
To get pictures through a window, you want to avoid flash. You want to find a clean spot on the window. It helps to bring the lens as close to the window as possible to minimize reflections. It can help if the camera is black rather than bright colors to minimize reflections. It can help if the lens has filter threads to accept attachments. A screw in, soft rubber lens hood can be helpful pressed against the window to decrease reflections.
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/21870-REG/Heliopan_701540_40_5mm_Rubber_Lens_Hood.html

For low light a bigger sensor helps. The Nikon AW1 has a 1" sensor that is significantly larger than the 1/2.3" sensors of the compact underwater cameras. Wider aperture can help you in low light. If you are getting a Nikon AW1, that 10mm f2.8 can be worthwhile to get.
A possible disadvantage to an underwater camera is that being sealed up watertight, moisture from ambient air is trapped inside. Go from a moist warm environment when closing it up, to a cooler environment, and condensation may form. You may need to open the camera and give it a treatment in a bag with silica gel packs to dry it in advance of use.
Non-waterproof cameras in underwater housings solve this by having room in the housing for silica gel packs to prevent fogging underwater.
Never use rice as a drying agent. Its effectiveness is poor, and it risks getting particles into things.
For low light, if the 1" sensor of the AW1 is good, the even larger sensor of a DSLR can be better. However, to use a DSLR underwater you need a housing, and good DSLR housings cost over $1000.
The Nikon AW1 is water-resistant enough for snorkeling, but not enough for SCUBA diving.
Even with a large sensor and a wide aperture, night shots will still require a tripod.

For pictures of animals it helps to use longer focal lengths. The Nikon AW1 is compatible with the non-waterproof Nikon 1 series of lenses. (Don't use a non-waterproof lens underwater.) The selection is limited. The most powerful telephoto is the 30-110mm.
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/823602-REG/Nikon_3312_VR_30_110mm_f_3_8_5_6_Lens.html
Because of the smaller sensor, the angular field of a 110mm lens on the Nikon 1 is the same as a 200mm lens on an APS-C DSLR. You can use even longer DSLR lenses on the Nikon 1 with adapters, but it gets cumbersome. A DSLR gives you more potential power, although see above issue on underwater use.
The Nikon AW1, even with its Nikon 1 30-110mm lens can work well enough with a good light travel tripod like the MeFOTO RoadTrip or the Manfrotto Befree. However, more front heavy lenses may require a heftier tripod head to work well with.

Is there a cover that i can put on my camera to take pictures underwater?

Taunee G

i want to be able to ake pictures underwater without the fear of messing-up my camera

Answer
Most 'proper' camera housings are camera specific and won't work on just any camera, and, as has already been said, are also very expensive. Usually only the top end cameras are provided for, nobody's going to spend $2000.00 plus on a housing for a $300.00 camera.

There are cheaper alternatives, with depth restrictions, available for some point and shoot cameras. Here's a link to a few suggestions, again they are camera specific, these are for Nikon, but Canon and Pentax are available too..

http://www.twenga.co.uk/dir-Photo,Photo-Video-accessories,Underwater-housing-190

Most digital camera manufacturers offer a 'waterproof' camera in their range usable to a shallow depth of a couple meters or so and offer a much cheaper alternative to a housing. Here's one, but Pentax,Canon and Fuji all do higher spec ones

http://www.coolest-gadgets.com/20080112/underwater-camera-reaches-75-feet-without-housing/

Finally there are some sites that offer DIY alternatives, very much a user beware for most of them,

http://www.diyphotography.net/diy_the_cheap_yet_shamefull_underwater_housing

I don't think I'd risk my camera inside a condom!!!.

is kodak a good brand or not?

Answer
On the eve of the 2006 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES), Eastman Kodak Company announced the new KODAK EASYSHARE Z650 zoom digital camera, the latest model in its Z-series line.

The 6.1-megapixel camera offers aspiring photographers exceptional performance and greater photographic control through its professional-quality SCHENIDER-KREUZNACH VARIOGON 10X optical zoom lens, helping capture detail from afar and flattering portraits.

âAs with the entire line of EASYSHARE Z-Series cameras, the Z650 delivers more advanced control when needed and simplicity of operation for everyday situations,â said Carolyn Walsh, Product Sales Director Digital, Eastman Kodak Company. âAlthough the new Z650 has an impressive resolution, is also demystifies the conception that megapixels are the only standard of measurement when buying digital cameras. By adding advanced features like 10X optical zoom and a live histogram, Kodak has raised the bar by providing photographers with the tools to create high-quality photos, enhancing their overall digital photography experience.â

The EASYSHARE Z650 camera will be available worldwide beginning in February 2006 (£299.99 RRP.)

Other Innovative Features of the Z650 Camera

The EASYSHARE Z650 camera builds in a number of innovative features that photographers will appreciate, including:The exclusive KODAK Colour Science image processing chip that results in portraits with edge-to-edge sharpness and brightness, rich colour, accurate skin tones and highly accurate exposure;

Remarkable dynamic range, fine detail and delicate highlights
A large 2.0-inch, high-resolution indoor/outdoor LCD screen that allows previewing of shots or reviewing pictures stored in 32MB internal memory or on an optional SD/MMC card
A live histogram that enables photographers to see the exposure of their subjects before taking the shot

A high-speed precision auto-focus system that offers fast click-to-capture times
First and last burst modes and flash compensation
On-camera editing features includes automatic red-eye reduction, cropping, blurry picture alert and auto picture rotation
5X advanced digital zoom delivers noticeably sharper pictures than regular digital zoom
The exclusive Share button to tag pictures for e-mailing, printing and saving to the on-camera digital photo album, computer, and online album as favourites
Making the EASYSHARE System Connection

Z-Series camera owners can quickly print KODAK 4 x 6-inch pictures with just one touch in as little as 60 seconds, using the new KODAK EASYSHARE Printer Dock Plus Series 3. The Series 3 printer docks are the first to support the new IMAGELINK print system, working with new EASYSHARE cameras and other manufacturersâ compatible cameras.

The Printer Dock Series 3 also transfers pictures to a connected computer, and recharges and reconditions the camerasâ batteries. Pictures made from EASYSHARE printer docks are vibrant, borderless, waterproof, and will last a lifetime, under typical photo album display conditions.

The line of EASYSHARE printer docks makes printing truly one-touch simple, and does not require people to connect a cable between camera and printer. Their convenience, print speed, ease-of-use and phenomenal picture quality have resulted in overwhelming demand from picture takers worldwide, with the line having achieved the number one market position in the United States, Australia and the United Kingdom, according to The NPD Group and GfK.

The Z-Series cameras include new KODAK EASYSHARE software version 5.2 for WINDOWS and MACINTOSH systems, providing effortless digital picture organisation, editing, sharing and printing. The exclusive One Touch to Better Pictures feature takes advantage of proprietary colour technologies developed by Kodak to help users get vibrant, true-to-life prints from inkjet printers. Answer
Most digital cameras with a USB cord (the "upload" cord you refer to) will also charge the battery while plugged into a computer USB port (or an inexpensive USB wall charger/power supply -- like those used for iPods and other USB-connector rechargeable battery gadgets).

Since most cameras will "power up" into file-transfer mode when plugged into a computer USB port, it may take longer than usual for the battery to charge back up. (You might try manually powering down the camera after it enters "sync mode" or USB-transfer status.)

Another option is to shop for a "universal charger" at a camera store or electronics store (even WalMart has a good selection). There are many 3rd party Canon-compatible chargers available; these charge just the battery in a separate cradle. Just look on the package to make sure it's compatible with a Canon NB-6L battery.

I checked on the web for a D10 manual PDF to verify the USB cord charging option, but the topic isn't directly addressed. It does appear that the camera can be attached to a USB port with the camera powered-off, so it might charge the battery after several hours. But, I also noticed that the optional AC power supply WILL NOT charge the battery while attached, so your best bet is to replace your lost charger with the original (Canon model CB-2LY or CB-2LYE â the European version) or a 3rd party model, as described above.

Hope this helps!

What are some good waterproof digital cameras?

frecklefac

I've always thought it was a really cool idea, and lately I've been looking into getting one. I've looked at some from Canon and Olympus. I'm leaning towards Canon's D10 because it gets good reviews, is slightly cheaper than Olympus models, and because I really like Canon cameras.
Anyone that owns this camera or another waterproof camera-
Is it good price considering that it would only get moderate use?
Do you recommend this camera, or another one?
Would I be better off getting a waterproof case for my current camera (a Canon powershot a570)?

Thanks so much!

Answer
Here are 5 top rated waterproof cameras:

1. Canon PowerShot D10

$330, 12.1MP; 3X optical zoom; waterproof to 33 feet
Canonâs first foray into waterproof digital compacts looks like a cross between a Digital ELPH and a diving bell. With a waterproof rating down to 33 feet, itâs among the deepest divers in this category, but its 2.5-inch LCD and optically stabilized 35â105mm (equivalent) f/2.8â4.9 zoom lens arenât at the front of this pack. Like the other cameras here, the D10 is freeze- and shockproof, in this case surviving temperatures down to 14 degrees Fahrenheit and falls of up to 4 feet.

2. Fujifilm Finepix Z33WP

$200, 10MP; 3X optical zoom; waterproof to 10 feet
Borrowing design cues from Fujiâs teen-targeted Z30, this underwater shooter is one of the tiniest and most stylish, as well as the most affordable. Its 2.7-inch LCD is as large as they come on this type of compact. But itâs waterproof only to 10 feet, and its 10MP and 35â105mm (equivalent) f/3.7â4.2 optical zoom arenât groundbreaking.

3. Olympus Stylus Tough 8000

$400, 12MP; 3.6X optical zoom; waterproof to 33 feet
Olympus offers some of the most rugged compact cameras you can get, and its latest fits the mold. You can shoot down to 33 feet underwater, drop the camera from up to 6.6 feet, and use it in temperatures down to 14 degrees Fahrenheit. Plus, its metal construction can withstand up to 220 pounds of pressure. Sensorshift image stabilization combats hand shake, and the zoom, while not league-leading, spans an equivalent 28â102mm f/3.5â5.1.

4. Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS1

$400, 12.1MP; 4.6X optical zoom; waterproof to 10 feet
Panasonic has stepped up to the pool in a strong way with its first waterproof digital camera. Its optically stabilized 28â128mm (equivalent) f/3.3â5.9 zoom offers a nice balance of wide angle for underwater and midrange tele for land-based adventures. At 12.1MP, it affords plenty of resolution, and it has an ample 2.7-inch LCD. While we wish it could go deeper than 10 feet, its 720p video recording should make playing in the backyard pool more fun than ever.

5. Pentax Optio W60

$250, 10MP; 5X optical zoom; waterproof to 13 feet
Pentax was one of the first to offer dunkable digital cameras with its WP series years ago, and now itâs a major force. This model has plenty of room to the left of the lens to hold onto, and we like the 720p video recording, though weâd rather have a faster rate than its 15 frames per second. Its Super Macro mode should be a boon below the surface, letting you focus as close as 0.4 inches from the front of the 28â140mm (equivalent) f/3.5â5.5 lens.

I want to learn diving and visit the underwater world.

Answer
On every dive, a diver will need:
Mask (+ snorkel)
Fins
Exposure protection
Weight system
Cylinder
Regulator (including cylinder contents gauge)
Buoyancy compensator (BCD)
Alternate air source (for dive buddy)
Depth gauge + dive timer, or dive computer

For communication and safety, he would also be well advised to carry:
Underwater noisemaker (tank banger, rattle, air-horn)
Dive slate
Cutting tool
Reel + marker buoy
Surface signalling device (whistle/ mirror/ flares/ beacon)

If solo diving, all of the above plus:
Spare mask
Redundant air supply

If tech-diving, all of the above plus:
Redundant instrumentation
Oxygen analyser

Additional accessories might include:
Torch
Camera
Lifting bag
Underwater scooter

I would suggest you get certified first, before thinking about buying equipment.

What kind of scuba water proof camera should i get?

I would like one, because i really love the ocean and i am going south african shark diving, in June, so i would like to to have a good camera that can take pictures underwater, and good quality pictures, and that it can zoom in fairly well. a cheap price would be nice.

Answer
Here are a list of web sites that have an assortment of cameras and housings for underwater use.
I would suggest one of the Liquid Image products for your diving needs. some of the masks have attachment for lighting. The built in Mask/Camera would be idea because it can be a hands-free system. Still Camera or Video option, one less thing for you to carry or worry about. Photos of everything you see at your point of view.

You need to figure out what your diving requirements are, what you want and finally what you can afford. What kind of diving and how deep you will be going and how much equipment you will need to carry.

Hope this information helps.

I would like to buy waterproof camera and I am in dilemma between PANASONIC LUMIX DMC-TS2 and OLYMPUS STYLUS TOUGH-8010. Please tell me which one do you find better and why.

Or you can suggest me something else. It is important to me that it is waterproof 10m, have wide angle, make quality videos and make great shots underwater...

Thanks!

Answer
These are main features difference :

Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS2 : 4.6x Optical zoom, Dustproof = Yes, Crushproof = No, Continuous Drive = 1.8 fps, Storage included = 40 MB Internal.

Olympus Stylus Tough 8010 : 5x Optical zoom, Dustproof = No, Crushproof = Yes, Continuous Drive = 5 fps, Storage included = 2 GB Internal.

For the spec Olympus Stylus Tough 8010 is better, but rating review/popular camera a Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS2 is better, The final is depend on you.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS2 : 14.1 MP Waterproof Digital Camera, 4.6x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom, 2.7-Inch LCD, Waterproof down to 10 meters, Shockproof (rated for drops up to 6 feet), Freezeproof, Dustproof, Record high-definition movie in AVCHD Lite, etc.

What type of cameras do i use underwater?

Answer
It depends on what you want and how deep you are going. If you are just doing a little snorkeling, maybe some water sports like rafting and playing in the pool, there are a number of 'water proof' cameras that are good to about 30 feet or so:
http://www.amazon.com/Nikon-COOLPIX-Waterproof-Digital-Camera/dp/B005IGVY92/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1343079120&sr=8-3&keywords=waterproof+camera

If you want to go deeper, like for scuba diving, there are specific water proof cameras rated for 150 feet or so:
http://www.amazon.com/SeaLife-ReefMaster-DC310-Digital-Camera/dp/B0001F73TK/ref=sr_1_23?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1343079308&sr=1-23&keywords=reefmaster

Or you could get a regular digital camera with a housing:
http://www.amazon.com/WP-DC43-Underwater-Housing-Canon-PowerShot/dp/B005OAZCJ0/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1343079375&sr=1-2&keywords=canon+underwater+housing
http://www.amazon.com/Canon-PowerShot-S100-Wide-Angle-Stabilized/dp/B005MTME3U/ref=pd_bxgy_p_img_b

Or you could go whole hog and get a housed dSLR set up:
http://www.amazon.com/Ikelite-6870-60-Underwater-Housing-Cameras/dp/B004WLEH3E/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1343079469&sr=8-5&keywords=canon+60d+housing

Of course, you need to add the camera, a port for the lens, gears for zoom lenses (if used) and strobes. A full set up, not including camera and lens, will cost $3,000 or more.

with all underwater gear, the rating is only as strong as the diligence you put into making sure the seals are in good shape and have been seated correctly every time the camera is going to get wet.

Good cameras/cases to go scuba diving with?

Vampire_Mo

Digital, portable, and should be able to go about 60 feet (that's the depth I'm certified for, so 70 feet would be even better). And cases for the camera if there aren't any affordable deep cameras? Thanks :)
And not more than $500 :P

Answer
Decent waterproof shells/lens ports tend to be particular to the camera. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ns=p_OVER_ALL_RATE|1&ci=16477&N=4185679681&srtclk=sort

ADDT'L: When I looked into a bulkhead(housing)/lens port for my DSLR, The total came to around $6,500 including a basic light system. So, for now, it is on my wish list.

Have you checked with your local dive shop?

best waterproof cameras 2010 image

mb_surf48

I need a waterproof camera that I can attach to my kayak that has a remote option where I can turn the camera on/off and take a picture. Needs to be at least 4mp would prefer at least 5 and be no more than 200.00.

is there one thats any good that even exists?

Right now Ive been trying to find a used go pro with a remote but when you add in the 80.00 remote it always goes over 200.

Answer
The best I could find is Pentax Optio WG-1 ($199) and Pentax 39892 remote ($24). This camera is better than those GoPo even it cost you $24 more. Couldn't find anything cheaper. But Pentax site says this remote works with their compact cameras made after 2010. So u might need to do little bit digging and find a older model which works with this remote.

Help remembering digital camera name?

JustAnothe

The camera I remember is held vertically. It has 3 models and records in HD. It is also a "rugged" camera, so it can go underwater up to 9 feet on one of the models. It records in 14.1 (or 14.2, can't remember) or 16.1 (or 16.2) depending on the model. I believe te model comes in either blue orange or black. If you could please assist me if anyone knows which camera I am describing. I am positive it is held upright with your hand (looks like an upside down L) when held because the screen flips out.

Answer
You can buy underwater housings for most well known makes of digital cameras, so its really a case of finding which camera you like and then getting a housing. Most housings are designed for SCUBA diving, 30-40m depth (90-120ft) . And a decent housing may well cost as much as or even more than the camera.

What is the best all weather digital camera?

My camera was just stolen so I need to buy a new one. I do a lot of outdoor activities like snowboarding so I need a durable camera. It would also be cool to get one that can shoot underwater because me and my dad are getting into scuba divng. I would prefer a camera with movie mode that records sound as well.

Answer
for sure the Olympus Stylus 850 SW
it is an AMAZING little digital camera! it is shock-proof for about 5ft, it is waterproof upto 3m (so u can use it underwater. if you buy the special case, then you can use it up to 40m underwater) and it will work well in really cold conditions (about 14F or -10C)
it takes good movies and pictures with pretty good quailty and it has TONNES of easy-to-use features and setting so you can make the lighting and colours in any situation awesome
I actually own one of these in the blue colour...i love it!
