Suggestions for HD camera for outdoor activities?

Sugar Ray

I am a kayaker, but I don't care about waterproof cameras. I would rather have the quality. Here's what I am looking for: a very clear picture that I can record to a DVD, at least 2 hours of shooting, good sound quality. Here is what I don't care about: a significant zoom function, numerous manual controls, a fancy lcd screen, anything over 800 dollars. Thank you.

Answer
i was watching the gadget show on ch5 in the uk a few a hours ago and they did a test on what was the best HD action camera's for under £300, $500 roughly, you can watch the footage of the review of the HD action camera's in the link below

What camera should I get?

Yahoo

So I want to buy a digital camera using Lithium batteries because I read they last longer and can recharge, and SD cards or something commonly used. It must also have lots of features, take good quality photos, have a good shutter and hopefulyl can take pretty good action and night photos, have video option, fast load and photo taking times, have a really long lasting battery/recharge quick and not too expensive. Anything else I should look for?

I will be doign a trip To UK, Europe and Asia and plan to do some snorkling and scuba diving, I need to buy a new digital compact camera and I was thinking if I should get a waterproof one as it could be cool but I am not sure if they are more costly and dont take as good general photos or movies?

What do you think?

Answer
Check the Olympus Stylus SW line of shock-proof and water-proof cameras.

Be forewarned that all digicams suffer from what's known as "shutter lag" - the delay between the time you press the shutter button and the camera actually takes the picture. Some have more than others but all have it. You can minimize it by pressing the shutter button 1/2 way down so the camera can focus and then finish releasing the shutter. Using "continuous" or "burst" mode can also help.

Also, digicams are usually poor performers in low-light, even with flash.

What is a great underwater digital camera?

Boo

I'm looking for something that isn't bulky, and has pretty good quality photos. $200-500.

Cheaper the better, but I am willing to splurge to get great quality! (i.e. doesn't blurr pictures, vivid images, video with sound)

Answer
Firstly what depth are you planning to take it? Are you a swimmer, snorkeler or scuba diver? That will dictate pretty much what type of camera you need.

For swimming, or snorkelling at no more that a couple of meters a camera labelled 'waterproof' (check rated depth) would probably do. Here's a list of consumer digital & disposable underwater cameras;
http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=underwater+cameras&x=16&y=27

Alternatively you buy a camera & housing to go with it (slightly more expensive option);
http://www.camerasunderwater.co.uk/d_stills/packages.html

These housings are rated to deeper depths suitable for divers. However, because they are rigid, the buttons on the outside (which work the camera buttons on the inside) have to be in the right place and so a particular housing is made to fit a particular model of camera.

Then there's lighting. On camera flashes are poor at illuminating underwater without causing 'backscatter', so for top quality images, you'll need a separate strobe & arm. Again, these aren't cheap!

Rigid housings rely on rubber seals or O rings to keep the water out & it is CRUCIAL that these are well maintained. They must be cleaned, greased & reseated correctly before every swim/dive to prevent leakage. The slightest bit of sand, grit, hair or nicks/cuts in the ring & it will leak.

My rigid underwater housing (Sea & Sea) for my Nikon DSLR cost in the region of £1500, ports were around £200 each & the strobes & arms were around £1000 - so you can see underwater photography with DSLR's is not a cheap hobby!

Good quality u/w photos come from not only quality equipment but also knowledge of how light behaves underwater. You need to be close to the subject to get a good image.

any suggestions for good waterproof digital camera?

xoxoRileyx

I am looking into buying a waterproof digital camera. I want to be able to take picture under water on vacation. And good suggestions that aren't too pricey? I was looking at the Olympus TG-310 Blue 14MP Digital Camera Bundle w/ 3.6x Optical Zoom, 2.7" LCD Display, Waterproof on walmart.com and it looks good. Also if I go into salt water with it, will the salt ruin it? I also want it to take good clear picture on dry land.

Answer
Take Panasonic TS3, I have tested this camera, review is below

Digital camera?

Q. I am going to be traveling in a little more than a month, and I want to get a digital camera for the trip. I want to find something that doesn't cost very much, and I don't care about most features as long as I can put the pictures on my computer later. I don't know where to start looking... can anyone reccomend a good website or store? Or can anyone give me advice?
Yes I know there are no invisible porcupines but it was random and it's my theme for the day. And why would I photograph an invisible porcupine anyway, even if you could get something to show up it would be fake since it isn't invisible, and if it was invisible it would be pointless.

And no there are no invisible porcupines. Just you wait, tomorrow I will have something new, original, and frighteningly random for you all.
The porcupine thing... is sort of an inside joke. Not totally inside, just sort of. (I can't believe he followed me all the way from the polls section, too!)

Answer
Start with the budget. This may seem backwards, but it's not. You can find a decent camera to match any amount of money you want to spend.

Next, find a friend who will help you learn how to use the camera. This "friend" could even be the clerk in your local photo shop. By "photo shop," I mean an actual camera shop or at least a camera department where the sales staff only deals with cameras and not dishwashers, too. Buy the camera that your friend recommends so that they will be able to teach you how to use it.

After you know what you are doing and are ready for your next camera - and this will come sooner than you think - you will be in a position to make your own choice.

If you have some vague ideas about price and desired features, go to http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/compare.asp and see what they select for you.

Choose the best one by deciding what you want to do, how much you want to learn, how far you want to progress and how much you want to spend.

This is somewhat out of date, but check this page for a general idea:

http://tech.yahoo.com/rc/digital-cameras/103 Most cameras mentioned have been replaced with newer models, which we will hope are as good or better than what they replaced.

Here's another resource for you. Look on down the page if you are interested in point and shoot cameras instead of dSLR's.

Here's another listing in order by ratings. They are only separated according to general groups, such as "Highly Recommended," etc. They are NOT listed within the groups according to higher rating. They are listed by date tested.

Consumer Reports from May 2007 has a short article on digital cameras and they recommend 10 different point and shoot cameras in the following order within groups according to camera design:

**COMPACTS**
Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX2 (Overall score 75) [$410]
Kodak EasyShare C875 (Overall score 73) [$165] - Rated better for shutter lag
Nikon Coolpix P4 (Overall score 65)
**SUBCOMPACTS**
Canon Powershot SD500 (Overall score 72)
Casio Exilim EX-Z850 (Overall score 72)
Sony Cybershot DSC-W50 (Overall score 70) [$180] [Similar to W55] - Rated better for shutter lag
Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX3 (Overall score 69) [$200] [Similar to FX-10, FX-12]
Olympus Stylus 720SW (Overall score 61) [Similar to 770SW - $360] (Waterproof)
**ADVANCED COMPACTS ("Near SLR")**
Fujifilm Finepix S6000fd (Overall score 77) [$300] - Rated better for shutter lag
Fujifilm Finepix E900 (Overall score 73) [$250]

underwater camera suggestions?

flower

what underwater camera would you recommend and why, be it and actual underwater camera, or one that requires a separate housing? if it helps i would be shooting mainly action shots (surfing/kite surfing) but also want the option to shoot macro? any suggestions?

Answer
Waterproof cameras scare me because I hear FAR too often about leaks, even when they are brand new.

Apparently it is very easy to catch a tiny hair or some other object in one of the seals (e.g. the battery / memory card door), and that is enough to let water in.

I'd suggest buying extra warranty protection and trying it out pretty much right away if you intend to go swimming with it.

Also, waterproof cameras are most often little P&S ones with tiny sensors, so don't expect any amazing results from them.

Waterproof point & shoot camera...?

Stu D'Appl

I'm looking for a waterproof point & shoot camera to use primarily when we're out surfing, but also as a pocket camera. I'm looking at the Sony TX5, the Olympus MJU 6010 and the Canon D10, but wondered if anyone had any other suggestions or experience of these types of cameras. my budget is up to £250.

Answer
Among those choices, for a camera that you expect to get wet but will not take very deep the Sony TX5 may be a good choice.
Here is a review
http://www.photographybay.com/2010/03/06/sony-cyber-shot-tx5-hands-on-review/
It's advantage is the 10 MP CMOS sensor that will give you less noise or artifact as you turn up the ISO to capture action. It will also give you better video.

I have one concern about this camera. As seen at
http://www.sony.co.uk/product/dsc-t-series/dsc-tx5/tab/technicalspecs
I see an absence of a sport or action mode. Years ago I had a Sony W70 that I used with a light duty underwater housing for kayaking. In Program mode it had an annoying habit of selecting small aperture, slow speed. It had no sport mode per se. A background blur mode favored wide aperture, but was limited to ISO 100.

So I don't know if Sony has ever fixed that problem.

Underwater digital cameras?

Book Shelf

I am looking for an underwater digital camera for use on reefs in Bermuda. Does anyone have any good suggestions? And this may seem silly but can they be used on land too? Prices would be appreciated as well.

Answer
Take a look at Canon PowerShot D10.
I've had this camera for over a year and have used it for multiple outdoor activities in a wide variety of conditions - underwater in pools, freshwater lakes, and saltwater snorkeling; as well as cold/icy/snowy conditions while skiing. It has definitely lived up to the "waterproof" claim as I haven't had a single issue with it. The image quality is great. I know this camera has a handful of one-star reviews for people claiming that it leaked on the first use and was irreparably damaged but I've had it underwater dozens of times and haven't had any issues, so my best guess is that a lot of those people didn't make sure all the seals were properly closed before going underwater (although I guess there's some chance that a percentage of the cameras are actually defective and I just got lucky).

Need reviews for coleman waterproof digital cameras?

confusedon

They sell a pretty cheap underwater camera for around 80 bucks. Ive never even known that coleman makes cameras in general, so im curious if anyone knows how they are. Its a 12 megapixel camera with only 640x480 video. 33 ft waterproof and 3.2ft shockproof. Looking for reviews or if anyone knows about coleman cameras in general.
One of my main worries is also shutter lag time.

Answer
They are on the do not buy list for amazon, a lot of returns for leaking camaras.

Which camera takes better pictures (photos included)?

Nick from

Hi!

Background: I am going to Hawaii in a couple of weeks. The camera I have is from 2007, but it's not waterproof. The other day I saw a waterproof down to 33 ft digital camera at Costco, usually $300, but on sale for $150. Since Costco has a special return policy in a certain amount of time, I decided to buy it and at least test the image quality on it.

I took some pictures with both cameras, in order to compare. I was wondering if you think one camera takes better pictures than the other? If so, do you think one camera takes much better photos? Or, do you not really think there's that much of a difference?

Pictures:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/29759797@N07/sets/72157633279316132/detail/

Thanks!

Answer
Results are not consistent. It is obvious you are not adjusting both cameras appropriately. It's a toss up then.

Why? Picture quality depends on user skill. Both cameras can take great pictures. You just have to know how to do it.

Between the two, just select which one you think is better built to handle water since that is your main concern anyway. Be warned. Just a small kink on that rubber gasket seal, the camera will drown to its death.

Waterproof digital camera?!?

Genevieve

I really want a waterproof digital camera for my birthday this year. I have been looking online and have found almost every camera has at least a few bad reviews to go along with however many positive ones they may have. I have a budget of 500 at this point, willing to spend more if necessary though. So I was wondering if anyone has any personal experience with waterproof cameras? Or have a friend that has? I'm just really looking for some advise here. Thank you for reading and your possible help :)

Answer
The thing about the internet is you will always find bad reviews on anything. What I like to do is to take the "Olympics" scoring approach to reviews. Throw out both the highest and lowest reviews, and what is left over is probably more accurate.

I have the Olympus Tough 8010, and it has worked well for me. Not all waterproof cameras are created equal, and perhaps the most significant difference is the waterproof depth rating. The waterproof cameras are usually rated for 1 Meter, 5 Meters, or 10 Meters in depth. Any deeper and you will need to go with a housing type camera.

One thing you have to do with waterproof cameras is to rinse them off after use.

Another thing to look for in a waterproof camera is underwater color balance. When underwater, even only a few feet, you will get a blue hue to the photos. A red filter or underwater color balance feature is required to bring the photo back to the correct color. The Olympus has this function as well, but I suspect others do too.

The Canon D10 is another camera that has good reviews.

Some, but not all of the waterproof cameras are also Tough, and are shockproof, freezeproof, and chrushproof (of course within limits).

I bought my Olympus after seeing a review of it thrown into a washing machine at the laundromat and it took a video of it being tossed around. So far, it has worked well.

Waterproof, edit, & inexpensive camera? need thoughts on what kind of camera I should get.?

Kaitlyn

Lately I've really been wanting a good camera. I had one a few years ago that is very old & doesn't have edits & such. I want a camera that is:
-waterproof
-has focus & zoom
-edits like for blemishes on faces.
-inexpensive, like less than 400 or 500 dollars.
(even if there is one that has no waterproofing, than I would like to see those too. waterproof isn't my top priority & I can just get those waterproof cases)
Thanks so much for commenting & showing me cameras! (:

Answer
A waterproof camera withing your budget is easy.

Retouching (what you are calling edits) is done in post production.

ALL cameras are auto-focus and have zoom lenses within your budget.

Here is one that has what you want and includes GPS

http://www.nikonusa.com/Nikon-Products/Product/Compact-Digital-Cameras/26293/COOLPIX-AW100.html

There are a few such cameras also made by Fujifilm, Pentax and Canon

You will have to visit a shop that sells them and see which you like the best

Waterproof camera?

Amanda H

i need some disposable waterproof cameras for vacation, i don't want to risk getting wet my digital camera at certain areas, swimming, waterfalls, etc..
please recommend, thanks

Answer
1) disposable underwater film cameras are sold at many department stores, even grocery stores.

If you need an online source try here ($6.99/camera):
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/288498-USA/Kodak_8004707_Kodak_Water_Sport.html

From the film, you can have the images developed and scanned to a CD at time of development.

2) You can get a new digital camera, like the Pentax W30:
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/484968-REG/Pentax_19271_Optio_W30_Digital_Camera.html

3) Or you can take your existing camera along, but put it into a protective waterproof bag that will still allow you to take photos. Example (about $30):

Waterproof Digital Camera????

Going to buy one, just for playing in the pool with my daughter, nothing crazy like scuba diving or anything like that. I am look at the Olympus Stylus 850. Any advice?

Answer
Hi I bought the Olympus Stylus 850, I think is a good camera for what you want it for, It takes really good pictures, good close-ups also, I ended up returning it and I exchanged it for a Sony Cybershot DSC H-10, just because I wasn't too crazy about the video audio on the Olympus, you can barely hear your voice, and it sounds muffled, my guess is because the mic. has to be covered up, so water won't go inside of it. I'm sure you would enjoy that camera, I would of loved to have kept it, but I am more concerned in the videos, so for a fun camera to take to the beach or to a pool, I think is a good choice.

Underwater Camera Housing Rental?

Olive

I'm going on vacation with my family to Panama City Beach, Florida in two weeks! My sister and I thought it would be awesome to rent an underwater housing unit for our Nikon d90 and take family pictures underwater!

The only thing is I'm not sure if I'd be able to rent one of these housing units for the day? I tried searching camera equipment rentals in Panama City on the internet, but it never produced anything useful. I'd be willing to call around to different stores and ask them but I can't even find a list of stores that might rent stuff like that out!

HELP!

Answer
Check with the dive shops. They may have rental housing or at least will know where you can rent them.

It may be less expensive to rent one of their camera/housing combinations if they have them for rent.

Because of the close proximity to Brooks Institute and their underwater photography program, a lot of the dive shops in Santa Barbara had a few rental Nikonos and Ikelite housings for specific cameras at one time.

Which camera to use for underwater photos?

Answer
You have two additional options.

One is to buy an underwater housing for your existing camera or purchasing a digital or 35mm underwater camera.

Underwater camera got water behind the lens. D.I.Y. fixable?

Elizabeth

I have a Samsung AQ100. It's an underwater camera. It was taken in a pool, only to get water behind the lens. The camera still works and takes pictures. However, dried patches of water are still on the lens. My warranty unfortunately expired at the begining of that month. I would like to know if it is possible to take the camera apart and clean the lens. There are only three screws on the camera, and I don't want to take the wrong one off and end up with the camera in pieces. If it is not possible, I would like to know if Samsung would fix the problem (for a fee, obviously. I doubt they would fix it for free.).

Thank you

Answer
Hi Elizabeth,

Unless the dried water is causing some distortion in the pictures you are taking you should leave it alone because trying to clean it will be likely to do more damage than good. Optically, spots on the lens should cause minimal problems because they have become part of the lens and should be completely out of focus. If you are seeing distortion on pictures you are taking you most likely have water spots on the image SENSOR area such as the IR cutoff filter. This is NOT something you should attempt to clean yourself.

You could try sealing the camera in a plastic bag with some uncooked rice or some packets of silica gel to see if they absorb any remaining moisture and reduce the spots, otherwise you should have the camera cleaned by a service technician or get another camera.

P.S. Many "underwater" cameras have very limited depth capabilities and will not tolerate more than a few feet of water before they leak.

Hope that helps. Good luck!

Equipment for Underwater photography?

Netherdrak

I will be going snorkeling with sea turtles in the Great Barrier Reefs in a 3 weeks (exactly 21 days lol). i have a Canon 40D that i will be bringing, a long with an underwater camera bag and various lenses. Im kind of new to the filter stuff, and i just found out about the underwater filters. Are the underwater filters necessary for taking pictures underwater? If it is, is there a place where i can get one quickly, before i go on my trip? thanks guys. I live in Hong Kong by the way.

Answer
An underwater camera "bag" is not good enough to put a decent camera in. You need an underwater "housing" specifically for your camera, and one that will allow you access to all the cameras functions.
The best way, by far, to do underwater photography is with strobes, set out and away from the lens axis. Otherwise, you will get the "kick-back" from all the stuff floating in the water that you can't even see.
If you cannot afford strobes, and must shoot without them, and you have a "digital" camera with automatic white balance you shouldn't need filters. If you want to use a filter, you need one that will cancel out the blue, which is prevalent underwater. You don't realize it but it's there.
In this day and age with digital equipment, I would recommend using the largest capacity memory card you can afford.
Remember to dry your housing after emerging out of the water. Keep the "O" ring clean so it creates a good seal.
When you're done for the day, soak your camera housing in fresh water for about 1/2 hour to remove all the salt water chemicals, etc.
It's been many years since I dove the Great Barrier Reef and it was an experience I will never forget. Super-great.
Have fun.
I was in China about 4 years ago and missed the opportunity to visit Hong Kong, and I regret that. Must be nice.

The best digital camera for me...?

Gallie

I would like a digital camera that takes high quality pictures that I can use to make photobooks, and blow up to a bigger size to frame for gifts. I had gotten the Kodak Easyshare because it was cheap, but of course the pictures turned out cheap looking. I'm looking for one now that is no more than $350, takes good quality pictures in bright light and at night, and takes pictures quickly (less lag time in between pictures). One that is waterproof would be great too, but I heard that waterproof cameras' picture quality is not as good. I'm also looking for one that reduces the blurry look when moving. Any suggestions would be great.

I would recommend Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ35.It is not a waterproof camera but great features and take great pictures.
12.1MP, 27mm wide-angle Leica DC Vario-Elmarit lens with 18x POWER Optical Image Stabilized Zoom that help reduce blur even hand shake, 2.7 inch LCD.
