I am currently looking for a new (used) DSLR because the DSLR I had before which is the Canon XS, is not dust proof. :O.. So I was thinking about the canon 60d which is $899 new plus tax and all the goofy add-on's. The 60d is more video capable which isn't my priority, and its not as durable. However, I do not want to spend more that $1000. Which means I can could get a used full frame 5D or 1DS. Then there are the other prosumer DSLRs like the 50D & 40D: not too old. What do you think about buying a used one?? Thank-a-doodles! Ciao!

Buying used has one advantage. It has been tested long enough to know its working. ;) Just make sure you know how to look at cameras to make sure you are getting your money's worth. That means never transact online. Check the camera personally before handing over your precious cash.

Should I buy a GoPro?

I've been looking at buying a camera for a while, but I haven't made any decisions. I am a ski and sail racer, so I would want something that is waterproof, and has some sort of mount. I want to buy a GoPro, but is it really worth it for $200-300, or is there something else that works just as well but is less costly?
And if I were to buy a GoPro, could it be used as a regular camera? I am no expert in photography (the only camera I have is my phone), but would it work?

The GoPro Hd Hero 2 is The best camera for filming underwater or in conditions where a Standard camera would not fit or would break I use it as a beat cam to the canon 5d or Sony hxrmc200E It out performs them in most High light conditions. It is better Used as a outdoor camera and not used for filming short films. But you can also get a pretty good green screen out of it. Buy it it is worth it I have 6 and none of them have broken!

If I were buying a camera for a child, it would be the Olympus Stylus 850SW. Why? Because it is waterproof to 10 feet and shockproof to a 5 foot drop. Dropping and drowning are the leading killers of digital cameras so why not eliminate them with the 850SW?

Some of our best answerers always recommends the Fujifilm FinePix F20 camera as the best-for-less choice. I have to say that I like the sample images at Steve's site (below). If Morey000 or SpaceCowboy show up after me and make this recommendation, choose them as the best answer, because I'm just passing along their suggestion. My brother has the A540 and my mother-in-law has the A530 - on my recommendation - and neither one has stopped speaking to me yet. Based on this and experience with other Canon Powershot cameras, I am now recommending the A550 as a nice and relatively inexpensive camera.

Canon just introduced the A550, which has more pixels, but offers less user control. I'd be happy with the A540, but the A550 is probably also worth considering, especially since the A540 has been discontinued. I've seen it for $140 in some stores like WalMart and Target.

The A550 costs $160 at B&H and, of course, you'll need a memory card.

What Are Some Recommendations For The Best Portable Video Cameras?

I would like to get some recommendations of the best portable and less expensive video/audio recorders for mainly making online type videos and tutorials. The camera could use SD cards for data storage, USB jump drives, etc. Also the audio quality is very important, so the ability to use an external microphone that can be plugged into the camera's audio port would be a plus.

I don't think there are any really cheap ones. I got the Pentax Optio W10. I actually got it for the time lapse capability, but it also happens to be waterproof. In fact, it will even shoot video with sound underwater. On ebay you can get it for under $200.

Nikon does make an economical underwater camera, the S31 for under $125, but it may not have all the features you want

I was wanting to take some underwater pictures in my creek next summer, it's pretty cold in it- never warmer than 50 degrees. The deepest part is 7 feet, the water is a little murky, but not awful.
A good waterproof camera that won't break easily would be perfect! I was looking at a Nikon Coolpix AW100, but apparently the seal on them is no good...... ? So I'm not sure now..... what would you reccomend?

the Olympus 1030 claims its waterproof to around 10m. but Ive heard some horror tales where its leaked. however you do pay a price optically for the 1030's the picture quality isn't as good as similarly priced compact cameras, but then again those cameras aren't as bombproof as the 1030

if you are going down the SLR route then the Olympus E4xx series is the smallest and lightest SLR on the market, and it does have a dedicated underwater case made by Olympus

You usually need a rigid housing for depths greater than 10m as the water pressure can press buttons on cameras in flexible pouches at this depth.

Most quality digital cameras don't run on AA batteries these days. Instead they run on camera specific lithium ion or lithium poly batteries which hold much more charge and energy, thus lasting longer. I would suggest just buying several batteries if you aren't going off for THAT long of a time. It is more practical and has more uses. What happens when the trip is over?

The other option would be to buy several waterproof disposable cameras.

You have several options.

The cheapest option: Buy an disposable underwater film camera from Kodak or Fujifilm, which is essentially a disposable camera in a sealed plastic case.

Next cheapest option: Go onto eBay and look for a Canon WP-1 underwater 35mm film camera, usually used for around $20.

Next option: Find an underwater case for your existing Canon digital camera. That's what I did for my Canon point and shoot. The case cost about $125 and it's available at places like http://www.bhphotovideo.com for the Canon-branded model. However, you can also buy generic underwater soft cases for under $50 for a point and shoot. Check out http://www.aquapac.net which has cases typically sold at places like REI.

Finally, the most expensive option: a new digital camera that's waterproof. Both Olympus and Pentax make such cameras. For Olympus, look at the Olympus 1030SW or 850SW. For Pentax, try the Pentax W60 or W30.

Is it safe to put your camera in a Ziploc bag?

Haha, okay so I can't afford a waterproof camera (I'm only 13) so I was thinking of putting my camera in a Ziploc bag. Is that safe for my camera? If not, is putting my camera in a separate Ziploc bag, then putting it in another is safe? Thank you!

Sure. Close the zip closure and it becomes watertight to a fair degree. You can submerge the camera in water to several feet without any problems. Below about 3 feet, the plastic will compress and literally "shrinkwrap" the camera and you may not be able to operate the controls. Then, the deeper you go, the more external pressure and the more likely a seam will fail and flood the camera. Examine the type of plastic for clarity. You will be shooting through the plastic, and if the plastic is milky instead of crystal clear, it will show as a blur that you can't get rid of in every picture you take. Use the largest bag you can. Start with it mostly fully inflated and see if you can manage the bouyancy. Adjust the amount of air in the bag so you can manage the camera controls and the buoyancy. Remember, as you go deeper, the air bubble in the bag will compress at the rate of double the depth means half the volume. If you are careful, one of the thicker freezer type bags should do nicely rather than 2 thinner bags. The clearer the plastic the better. I've used a freezer bag in pouring rain and it protected my Nikon F2 (35MM) quite nicely. It takes a bit of practice, but any sealable plastic bag with a positive closure such as ziplock, will protect the workings. If you have ANY doubts, it is safest to double the bag, just in case...

Shallow/cheap options - you can either buy a waterproof digital camera (usually ok for swimming pool depths - 2-3m or so) or you can use a flexible housing for a camera you already have (usually ok for 5-8m or so).

The Olympus 770SW is the most waterproof- down to 10m (33ft). It's a bit smaller than the Pentax and a bit more expensive as well.

You will not find any good ones for $200.

As said previously, Nikon AW100 or Olympus Tough-820.

I have the Olympus Tough-8010 which is a predecessor to the 820 (the Nikon was not available when I bought mine), and it has worked pretty good.

There are some models under $200 such as the Olympus Tough-3000. However, they are not nearly built as well, and cannot go as deep waterproof wise.

Realize also that the waterproof rating is for calm - static water. If you dump your camera into a raging river, there will be more force against the camera, and a camera like the Tough-3000 which is rated only to 3 meters in depth may not be enough.

The 8010 had additional o-ring seals, which is why I went with that one. Also it has an all-metal case, and I think part of it might be magnesium, but I am not 100% sure. At any rate it is heavy (at least for a compact camera), and well built.

Also, Olympus has more than one camera with the same model number, so make sure it is the "Stylus Tough" series, as those are the waterproof and ruggedized ones.

It needs SDHC memory card. Buy it together as amazon suggests with additional battery and 16 GB card and you are still under $200. And reviews of the users are awesome...

I am stormchaser as well, but here in Europe, I have purchased this camera yesterday from amazon UK, can't wait to arrive :)

I am going to the Caribbean and need to get an affordable waterproof camera that takes high quality pictures underwater and above. I'll be diving and snorkeling so the farther the depth of the camera the better. I want it to be inexpensive so $150 at most. I'll only be using it this one time so I don't want to spend much. Anybody know of any?

You need to have manual control over the shutter speed and the shutter speed should be able to go to 30 seconds. Most digital cameras don't have this option because of the noise they will produce at such long exposures.

Means that your camera can record a video in 640 x480 (0.9 MP) resolution at 60 frames per second.

I'm probably going to go to the Soundwave festival in 2014 and I really want to record some bands performing. I went last year and used my sibling's 4th generation iPod Touch to record. The picture quality was good, but the sound was all distorted and rumbling when I was closer to the stage. So are there any cameras that have good picture quality and microphones that can handle loud noises and that will pick up the sound from the band and not the crowd?(I didn't have this problem, but I've heard this is a problem with some cameras).
Oh, and. I'm not too worried about this, but just in case, is there any way to protect the camera from others in the crowd?
By "protection" I'm talking about moshers! Elbowing the camera or slamming against it and what not.

The built-in mic is not the big problem with the audio. Using manual audio gain control can resolve most of the issue. Any camcorder from the Canon HF series or the mid and upper range of the Sony HDR-CX or HDR VX series have some sort of manual audio gain control. At the low end, the consumer cams manual audio control is very basic "normal" and "attenuator" for loud audio. As the price increases, the manual audio control becomes more granular and a 10-12 step control in the menu is provided.

What sort of "protection" do you need for the camcorder? There are waterproof housings, rain jackets, dust jackets and others types of "protection" available.

This is a waterproof camera that can be attached to bikes, motorcycles, other vehicles and pretty much anything you can think of. This is exactly what I'm looking for BUT they want $500 buck for it!

Can you help me find a P.O.V Camera like this (for a moped)?

Keep in mind, it does not have to have all of the high-tech functions that this one has.

I'm just looking for one to strap onto my moped and make my own videos with.

But I need something that's going to be able to travel long distances with me.

Not just your average digital camera or a webcam.

There are 2 models in that Camcorder. One in photo is the expensive one because it has few more features like GPS and underwater casing. it has a cheaper model called Contour ROAM2 cost you less than $200 at Amazon (if you are in USA). If can't get it from Amazon check it in local camera stories.

You can buy an underwater camera (10m) with a built-in GPS for under $350
