Hi. I am planning on traveling to Australia & New Zealand for 6 months (January to June). I am wondering how I should go about packing for this. What kind of luggage to bring, what exactly to pack? I will be working in exchange for room & board via helpx.net & probably staying places a few weeks at a time. I kind of want to bring my laptop. I'm a big runner so I have to bring running shoes too. If I'm not homesick, I may decide to get a paid job & stay the whole year as that's how long my visa is good for. Thanks in advance for your help & advice! :)
Answer
You need a backpack so you can move everything in one go on your own. Suitcases only work in airports.
The laptop is good for photos etc but is a constant security worry; not all of your fellow travellers are honest. It is much better if it is a netbook. Back it up totally before you go and leave the backups at home, and backup photos to Flickr as you go. Make sure it is dual voltage (they usually are)
Hostels always have laundry facilities, stuff will get a LOT of wear so don't take anything you value as you will be chucking it all at the end of the trip. Big thing to leave behind is jeans; impractical for the cold and damp of NZ and the heat of NZ (sometimes) and Oz. Try and have everything in similar pale colours for ease of washing it all together; no black and no white.
take: two pairs convertible travel trousers (quick dry)
one pair long cotton shorts
whatever you wear for running
one swimsuit/boardies
nightwear - warm for NZ where bedrooms are always cold
underwear - about a week's worth. Socks ditto
shoes: walking shoes for tracks, your running shoes, one pair of comfy trainers for city sightseeing and travel, one pair flip flops for indoors.
tops: a couple of polypro t-shirts for walking, one thermal top, three cotton t-shirts (replace as you go)
one lightweight fleece jumper, maybe two
waterproof jacket, warm hat, gloves, sunhat
if you are a girl: one skirt and a couple of pretty vest tops (if you do 'pretty'). If you are girl: NO hairdryer (annoys everyone else in the hostel) and NO straighteners (excess baggage)
towel; not a travel one, they get smelly. An ordinary cheap one just big enough to dry you off.
toiletries and medication; of course you can get it there but keep some stuff with you, it can be a long way to a chemist. Have plenty of anything on prescription.
spectacles/contact lenses and prescription if you wear them
miscellany: swiss army knife, 2m cord, clothes pegs, adapter, small sewing kit
MP3 player and its charger cable for long journeys
unlocked mobile phone - buy a SIM when you arrive. Charger.
camera and charger
small bottles insect repellent and sunscreen to start you off. Replace in Oz/NZ where it is much cheaper. Factor 30 to be worn at all times.
travel insurance and access to money. Travellers cheques as emergency backup, in Australian dollars.
passport!
as the other poster said, you can replace items; be aware that clothing in NZ is expensive due to the small population, stick to the Warehouse. Oz is cheaper due to more people.
enjoy.
