Recommendation based on price and feautres. Most bang for my buck! Any links to reviews will be appreciated.

Answer
Ok,

Here goes...for a good look at what the experts recommend, start by looking here:

http://gpsinformation.us/main/gpshiking.htm where they recommend the following units:

Magellan Meridian
basic
gold - http://gpsinformation.us/mgoldreview/mag-gold.htm
platinum - http://gpsinformation.us/mgoldreview/mag-plat.htm
Magellan Sportrak Pro - http://gpsinformation.net/mgoldreview/sportrak-pro-rev.html

Vista / Legend - http://gpsinformation.net/etrexlegend.htm
Lowrance iFinder (all models) - http://gpsinformation.net/ifinder/ifinderrev.htm

When you are done checking out the reviews, this seems to be one of the most exhaustive GPS sites I have ever seen.

Feature considerations for good geocaching GPS gear:

Keep your gear longer by securing it with those key-keeper-style coiled lanyards. They are great for attaching receivers, cameras, and radios. If you drop your gear, it may spring back before crashing on the ground. They're great for keeping gear from becoming lost or stolen in wilderness or urban environments.

Basemap. This is highly recommended. The additional cost is marginal, and the increase in the equipment's usefulness is substantial.

Channels. Use a receiver with 12 parallel channels. This should include most manufactured after 1997. Older, single-channel receivers are much slower and may not be as accurate.

External antenna jack. This allows the equipment to be mounted inside a vehicle. It is not always possible to obtain good satellite coverage through a front windshield. Even backpackers will benefit from the ability to safely store the receiver inside a pack with an antenna attached to backpack shoulder straps.

Interface. If using the receiver with a computer, be sure that it includes both data in/out ports, and make sure it's NMEA compatible.

Memory. This is used to load detailed topographic or street-level digital maps into the receiver. Topo maps use up a great deal of memory. Capacity should be at least 8 megabytes, or the receiver should include the ability to accept a memory card for as much memory as needed.

Power source. Use a cigarette lighter power cable whenever possible. If you're only using batteries, make sure to carry spares and use a solar charger for extended field use.

Rocker keypad. Using a receiver without a rocker keypad is like using a computer without a mouse.

Screen size. For visual ease of operation, use a receiver with the largest screen that can be realistically carried. Screen size is measured diagonally. Color is great and helps define map features, although it does burn battery power.

Waterproof. Sooner or later the gear will get submerged. Get gear that is at least water-resistant. Plastic bags and boxes give electronics a little additional protection.

Help remembering digital camera name?

The camera I remember is held vertically. It has 3 models and records in HD. It is also a "rugged" camera, so it can go underwater up to 9 feet on one of the models. It records in 14.1 (or 14.2, can't remember) or 16.1 (or 16.2) depending on the model. I believe te model comes in either blue orange or black. If you could please assist me if anyone knows which camera I am describing. I am positive it is held upright with your hand (looks like an upside down L) when held because the screen flips out.

i would like a underwater video camera that does not cost to much money.

Answer
you can get cheap ones that go to about 15 ft but once you get to 30ft you are going to find that things get more expensive as the greates pressure change is from 0-10 metres 0-39 feet ish. you are unlikely to get a camera that does that Sea and surf make one but they are not cheap, your other option is a housing that will fit a camera/camcorder, but if you want to protect your equipment you need to spend some money, you can use a plastic bag (designed for taking cameras underwater) with a seal (ziplock) but they are around $100

if you are going to use it for diving then you need to add your maximum depth plus 50% for safety

How do you take pictures underwater? What equipment do I need?

crazzeemon

I am going to the Flordia Key in two weeks. I know all about the camera water casing (they cost alot). I was thinking about buying desposible underwater cameras, but my instructor that the cameras would not take good pictures. I own a Digital SLR camera, but I think it would be risky to bring it underwater, even with a covering. Should I buy a waterproof digital camera (Camera types?)? Any solutions (Not requiring loads of money)?
Also, is there any "rules" to taking pictures underwater? Lastly, is there any procedures to taking good pictures underwater?

Answer
Rubbish. A disposable will be OK if you're only snorkeling, but the photo quality royally sucks (underwater only). I tried using 30(?) meter disposables on 10 dives in Cozumel and NO underwater photos were even a little acceptable.

You reference an instructor, so we can assume that you are diving. Most budget conscious divers go to Leisure Pro for their non-life-supporting accessories, but even there you will see housings aren't cheap. Best bet is to hold off on photography until you can drop the $200 on a good, reliable housing for your digital cam.

Rules- Always be aware of your surroundings. You and your buddies safety is first, getting a shot of the mermaid is a distant second.
It's all about the light. Read up on how to photograph underwater without a strobe (the Net is peppered with articles). If by 'rules' you meant 'laws' regarding photographing underwater, the answer is "if you can see it, you can photograph it" (unless diving Area 51).

Good luck!

What should I be looking for in a digital camera?

waterproof digital camera 10x on ... Olympus Tough Waterproof 12MP 10x Zoom HD Digital Camera & Accessories
waterproof digital camera 10x image

I am looking to buy a digital camera. I am willing to spend around $300-$350. I have to research before I can spend that much so I know exactly what I am buying.

Some of the things I know I should look for are:
- Megapixel (the more the better??)
- Optical or digital zoom
- Screen size.. or type ?

And.. thats it. And I know there is ALOT more that I should be considering.

Answer
Before purchasing a digital camera, ask yourself this: what sort of pictures will you be taking?
- For regular 4" by 6" photos, 5-6 megapixels (MP) is sufficient, but more MP will let you crop photos without loss of detail, as well as do larger-sized prints with superb image quality.
- Long range photos, or regular-range photos? The difference here is the camera's zoom. Optical zoom is "real-world" zoom using the camera's lense, whereas digital zoom is "artificial" zoom using the camera's internal processor to magnify an image at the cost of image resolution. Optical zoom is much, much better for quality pictures. The concern: Regular zoom cameras (usually 3x optical zoom) are more compact and easy to carry, whereas high zoom cameras (usually 10x optical zoom and up) usually have a large lens, making them bulky and less suitable for candid or everyday use.
- Where will you use the camera? Again, physical size is a concern if you want to carry a camera with you all the time. Ultra-slim cameras exist and are quite powerful. Additionally, waterproof and "tough" cameras exist for shooting under any circumstance.
- Last, depending on your photography skills, do you want a simple "point-and-click" camera, or will you be using manual focus, changing the ISO often, etc? Generally, cameras with lower prices have very few adjustable settings, but this can be great if you aren't going to worry about all of that.

Regarding screen size: most of today's cameras have an LCD screen which is at least 2 to 2.5 inches in size, which is enough to clearly see pictures you take and easily review them if necessary.

Finally, one essential accessory is the Memory card. This card is like "film", in that is is required to store pictures on your camera. Cards vary in price, and since different cameras require different cards, I suggest first finding a camera you like, and then considering an appropriate card. (Or, ask about digital camera memory at a later date.)

I want a digital camera that takes pics with sharp detail?

Jess

I am looking into buying a small digital camera that takes pictures with sharp detail, zoom doesn't matter really as much. Looking to spend under $400 US if at all possible. I want one that will fit into a purse or pocket, no permanently protruding lenses. Waterproof a plus but by no means a requirement. Any recommendations?

How to become a surf photographer?

waterproof camera enclosure on underwater camera housing
waterproof camera enclosure image

mason

It has been my goal my whole life and I plan on going to school for photography

Answer
I will break it down to you like this:

First of all, photography school is great, but what you really need to do is goto school for business and marketing. You will be working for yourself and running a business. You could be the best photographer in the world, but without some marketing and business knowledge you will fail.

Now for doing something specific like this, you will most likely run into a few snags. Obviously living by the ocean is going to be important, lets assume that you do. All you can do is start making some friends with people that are good at surfing and start shooting them! Make a name for yourself with their friends, facebook will be very powerful here to get your name out there between the surfers.

I dont know much about shooting surfing, I shoot lots of motocross, but Im assuming you would be in a good place if you had a waterproof enclosure for your camera so you can actually get in the water to get some super killer angles. The problem with this? good waterproof cases usually cost way more than your camera, the one for mine cost $6,000. So to start with I would assume you will be on a beach shooting with a long telephoto lens.

Keep in mind that shooting a beach is terrible for your gear, very very terrible.. salt water spray, sand, all terrible things.

Now you need to get paid right? Thats the hard part, who will buy your photos? The surfers might, but your really going to need to try more along the lines of selling photos to magazines or having the magazines hire you to go on assignment.

This can take alot of time and alot of networking. I have learned this myself, and what it comes down to; you will need to find something else to shoot to pay the bills and work on your surfing photos on the side until you can catch a big break.

im going to hawaii in 2 days. where can i buy a waterproof camera case?

Answer
Bro Otter nailed it. Since you left it a wee bit too late, a disposable film or digital is now your option unless you plan to rent. A digital can be purchased from Wal Mart ( a Vivatar) at about 70 bucks here in Canada. Not great, but they work. I wouldn't choose one, for that matter I wouldn't choose your other option of film amphib either. I don't do vacation pics. I do pics.
If on the other hand you meant to take your camera down.....nope. Do you like your camera? Bags aren't nice for them either. Often buttons are pressed without the person holding them...pressing 'em. If that button can be pressed at all. Pressure does that. Mechanical linkages fail or stick in an air tight enclosure under ambient water pressure.
You sound like a cheap 16 foot rated disposable film camera available just about anywhere in Hawaii ( been there) is right up your alley. 8 bucks, 24 shots and definitely in your depth range. You'll be fine using one in Hanahumama (sp?) Bay. That's the tourist site near Diamond Head, nice shallow snorkel or dive.

Would appreciate thoughts on the Fuji Finepix HS20 EXR?

waterproof camera kayaking reviews on Waterproof Camera Mobile Phone Pouch Dry Small Bags PVC Case for Kayak ...
waterproof camera kayaking reviews image

FatherRyan

Am a Kayaker and need a camera capable of taking High quality pics while kayaking in the lakes of South Island New Zealand. I realise that it is not an SLR, however it is smaller, less bulky and far more practical to carry in the Day hatch of a kayak for on water use, also the one lens suits all is attractive. Anybody with experience with this camera, or its HS10 predecessor I would appreciate your thoughts

Answer
You're not going to get real high quality images with this camera. That's because it has a very small image sensor (1/2"). This link shows you image sensor sizes...
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Sensor_sizes_overlaid_inside_-_updated.svg

The larger the sensor, the better. You can see that the HS20 has a minutely smaller sensor than the smallest one shown. So, it will perform best using a low ISO, which is just fine for outdoor, daylight use. Mid to high ISO images are fairly poor, showing high amounts of noise. It IS capable of shooting in RAW, however with such as small sensor, I doubt they'd be high quality.

I don't know about you, but I would be a little nervous taking a camera out on a kayak if it wasn't waterproof or protected by a waterproof housing. So, have you thought about a waterproof camera? You might not get ultra high quality images, but at least you'd have some peace of mind. Look at the Panasonic TS3 or Sony TS10...
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/Q311waterproofcompactgrouptest/page12.asp

If you're still determined to get the HS20 EXR...just don't get it wet. I don't see a real problem with AA batteries...you can buy non rechargeable lithium e.g. Energizer Ultimate for long battery life.

Waterproof camera: Pentax Optio W80?

*Mandey*

I want to buy a waterproof camera that can still take good quality pictures and my father suggested the Pentax Optio W80. I go kayaking so I like how it is waterproof, I broke my last camera by dropping it, so I like the shockproof. So pretty much, I like everything about it. But I was reading some reviews about it and I guess some people don't like the picture quality. What do you guys think? Is there something better I should check out? Thanks in advance! xoxo

Answer
I own a Pentax Optio S5z. Now discontinued. I think the Optio line is an excellant choice! The point is that, I bought it for it's smallness (fits in my shirt pocket). BUT I demand quality for my money. There are others on this forum that can look up and give you the technical of why you should or shouldn't buy. Mine is a bit more simple. You buy the camera, keep all packing, instruction book, & receipt. Then in the first days shoot some pictures outside, run to a on premises photo lab, Fred Meyer, Costco, etc. Have an 11x14 (cost about $4.00) made, NOT a 4x6! If your 11x14 is sharp and has good color keep the camera! Other wise return it. Also continue to keep everything the camera came with, box, etc. until the warranty is over. Retaining everything also makes returns easier!
Now some fatherly advise-PLEASE buy two straps for your new camera! The first one is a neck strap and use it. So many young people think it is fashionable to carry a camera in their hands with the strap dangling in the wind. This is how cameras get dropped.
The second advice is to find a chest strap for your kayaking experiences.

For best camera prices:
www.bhphotovideo.com 1-800-854-5575

www.adorama.com 1-800-223-2500

https://www.amazon.com/

A good place for that chest strap if you can't find at the above sites.

I was hoping to get a video camera for my birthday and i was wondering whats the best kind thats not higher than 250

Answer
Well as a cinematographer I have used a lot of cameras but it narrows down to only a few I'd suggest for under $250. First is Somy DCR-SX45, It's about $200. I am
currently using one of theses as a secondary camcorder that I take everywhere instead of taking my Canon XLH1 everywhere.
The second camera I'm gonna suggest is waterproof which is the Kodak Playsport (Zx5), about $159.00. I use this camera when skiing/snowboarding, canoeing/kayaking, swimming, and anytime it is suppose to rain.

What is a good camera for backpacking?

Skillet007

Hey all, I do a lot of backpacking, kayaking, bicycling, etc. I was wondering what a good all around camera would be. I don't care if it is a point and shoot or something more professional. I just want some feedback!

Answer
Depends on the trip but I have a Nikon N65 35mm but when the trail gets rough or if theres water in the equation- storms, kayaking, fishing etc or if I`m rock climbing I go to my Olympus 770SW. Its lightweight takes great pics and is waterproof upto 33ft, freeze proof to 14*F, crush proof to 160 or 180 lbs can easily take a 6 foot drop on a hard surface. Its small enough to fit a shirt breast pocket but isnt difficult to find the buttons. They replaced the 770sw (which is 7.1 mega pixels) with the slightly more bulkier 1030SW (10.1 mega pixels, Crush proof to 220lbs)

How can I keep my audio and video in sync?

Q. I have a 'Kodak Play sport' waterproof film camera that I have recently been trying to film on. The film quality is brilliant, and the audio quality fairly good, but only on the camera. When I import it onto my computer, the audio and video in both WMP (Windows Media Player) and WMM (Windows Movie Maker).
Any suggestions on how I can:
a) Remove audio lag using WMM.
b) Stop audio lag altogether on my camera.
c) Suggest an alternative free media editing suite to do a) with.
Thanks,
MiJ.

Answer
Clarification: You are "filming". There is no *film* involved. The digital video (and audio) device you are using captures video.

As you indicated during playback, the audio and video are in synch. When the media file is transferred to the computer, the audio and video are not in synch. This symptom (also sometimes referred to as being "glitchy", is *usually* due to the computer for one or more of the following reasons:

* The computer's CPU is underpowered for dealing with the video recorded.
* The media player cannot deal with the video.
* The computer does not have enough RAM.
* The computer does not have enough available hard drive space.
* The computer is doing other work using CPU cycles that the video needs to play properly.

For playback only, try VLC player from http://www.videolan.org/ as it is more robust than WMP. As for editors - in the Windows environment, Sony Vegas usually floats to the top... But not knowing the computer environment makes this a SWAG...

Im looking for an HD video camera that I can use to film snowboarding stuff. Id be willing to spend 200-400 dollars, and I was wondering what cameras offered good quality picture and solid features for this price range.

Answer
Are you looking for a regular video camera or POV?

If you're looking at POV's (Point of View) then there's basically three options. I've spent weeks upon weeks looking at and researching these three companies.
Contour - http://contour.com/products
GoPro - http://gopro.com/products/
Drift - http://driftinnovation.com/drift-hd-action-camera/

The top competitors from each company are the GoPro HD Hero 2, Contour +, and Drift HD. They're all pretty new so there won't be as many reviews as for their older models. I'll give you what I like and hate about each.
Gopro - Good - Waterproof, HD, Good video quality, Good stabilization, Lots of mounting accessories
Bad - Kinda bulky and not very sleek, video seems a bit saturated, menu is awful

Contour - Good - Sleek and small, HD, Good video quality, lots of features like GPS and bluetooth view finder that syncs with your smartphone (pretty cool).
Bad - Image stabilization isn't as good as the others, only water resistant (but you can buy a case)

Drift - Good - Sleek and small, HD, Good video quality, great menu, lcd playback/viewfinder on camera.
Bad- Only water resistant (you can buy a case), not as many mounting accessories as the others

I would like to buy waterproof camera and I am in dilemma between PANASONIC LUMIX DMC-TS2 and OLYMPUS STYLUS TOUGH-8010. Please tell me which one do you find better and why.

Or you can suggest me something else. It is important to me that it is waterproof 10m, have wide angle, make quality videos and make great shots underwater...

Thanks!

Answer
These are main features difference :

Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS2 : 4.6x Optical zoom, Dustproof = Yes, Crushproof = No, Continuous Drive = 1.8 fps, Storage included = 40 MB Internal.

Olympus Stylus Tough 8010 : 5x Optical zoom, Dustproof = No, Crushproof = Yes, Continuous Drive = 5 fps, Storage included = 2 GB Internal.

For the spec Olympus Stylus Tough 8010 is better, but rating review/popular camera a Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS2 is better, The final is depend on you.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS2 : 14.1 MP Waterproof Digital Camera, 4.6x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom, 2.7-Inch LCD, Waterproof down to 10 meters, Shockproof (rated for drops up to 6 feet), Freezeproof, Dustproof, Record high-definition movie in AVCHD Lite, etc.

There are few but I am going to keep your budget of $50-150 in mind.
If you are fine with Used ones too, try to buy Pentax WG-2. Nice camera. If you can't find one in your price range, look for Pentax WG-1. One of the best waterproof cameras in your price range. What is a good amount of megapixels for a cheap video camera?

joe

Due to one of the best burns o. Yahoo history, I have to re-ask the question with detail.

I am planning on going on a longboardning trip, I think megapixels have to do with th quality of the shot, but either way what is a good 'affordable' cameras that have a decent battery life, I think thats it

Answer
If you want video, then quality is based on horizontal line count and compression applied to the video captured and stored. 480 horizontal lines is Standard definition. 720 and 1080 are high definition.
Lower compression = higher quality = large video file
Higher compression = lower quality = smaller video file

If you want stills, the megapixel count is important.

If you are longboarding, a waterproof camera would be appropriate.

"Affordable" means different things to different people. Waterproof cameras can range in price from $200 up to over $50,000 (a decent camcorder in a good underwater housing).

"Decent battery life" is as simple as getting an extra rechargeable battery from the camcorder manufacturer.

Any GoPro in a waterproof case is worth investigating.

What is better: Underwater camera or an underwater camera case?

My Situation: I'm going to a family reunion in Hawaii in a couple of weeks, and was thinking taking pictures while snorkeling may be fun. I could buy one of those $10 disposable underwater film cameras, but since I go into caves a lot which are wet, I thought getting something not disposable could be useful there also. I don't want to spend too much money, but am exploring my options.

What I've tried so far: I went to REI the other day, and bought a $30 heavy duty underwater plastic baggie with a hard lens opening that goes over the camera lens part. I tried it out with the digital camera I already have and noticed the pictures are okay if I don't use the flash, but once I use the flash the pictures come out very cloudy. That was the AquaPac brand, and I'm not sure if the DiCaPac brand name underwater baggie would be any better or not. As an alternative, I'm not sure if those "hard case" underwater housings take care of this "flash problem", although with how much they cost for my particular snapshot camera model, it may be cheaper just to buy a real underwater camera. I'd also be worried that a hard case housing wouldn't be useful if I decide to upgrade cameras later on, since they're specific to the camera model?

So, moving the story forward, at Costco there's an underwater camera usually $300, but I just bought it on sale for $150, trying to figure out if I should open it or return it. It's a Nikon Coolpix AW100. It's waterproof to 33 ft, drop proof to 5 ft, and has "underwater mode" (although the camera I already have has an "aquarium mode", not sure if that would help or not).

My Question: I'm not sure if it would be best to go with the Nikon AW100, or get a better underwater heavy duty baggie case with the hard lens to go with my existing digital camera (so that I can always upgrade my digital camera later on), or some other option?

Answer
I think it's better to have both, so that you won't have to equip your original camera in order to take pictures, and you will always have the underwater for the next time you need it, I mean it's specifically made for that environment ( underwater ) while your old one isn't. My opinion is keep them both : it's easier and safer

Answer
I am a scuba diver & underwater photographer.

The reason you get 'foggy' pictures when using the flash underwater is that you get 'backscatter' from on axis flash off particles in the water.

The ONLY way round this is to use an off camera strobe - these can be attached to DSLR underwater housings, or you can get versions that attached to hard cases for compact cameras. The hard cases are usually waterproof down to recreational diving depths (ie at lease 40m, usually 60m). This may well be overkill for what you want to do.

There are rigid underwater housings available for your camera;
http://www.digifish.nl/en/equipment/housings.html?model=Canon+PowerShot+A720+IS

You should be able to attach an external strobe but these are not cheap - you are talking a few hundred pounds!!

Using a flexible 'baggie' is ok, but as you have found in low light (& light levels drop off fast underwater) you are going to need some additional lighting. The Dicapac wouldn't be any better in this respect to what you have already tried. The Costco camera would also suffer from this problem too as it has an inbuilt flash.

The other alternative is to get really close to the subject - reduce the thickness of the water column - this will reduce backscatter.

Just realise that if you thought photography was an expensive hobby, underwater photography is much worse!!

What is a good waterproof digital camera for SCUBA diving?

Sunnyboy

I'm looking for a compact digital camera which I can use both in and out of the water. Most of the good waterproof cameras which I have found are only rated to 10 meters, which is insufficient. Am I better off buying a regular camera and a waterproof case? I have seen some of these offered by Canon.

Answer
You're best off to do a little research on the camera you really want and then see if there's a decent underwater housing for it. Personally, I'd steer clear of the actual camera manufacturer's housings. They tend not to allow use of all the camera functions and they are usually only just good enough that they can claim a depth rating of 130ft max. You're better off protecting that camera investment by purchasing a decent housing like an IkeLite ( if it's available for your camera). They're rated to 200 feet and each is factory tested to pass that. I own a Canon A720IS, that canon does make the housing for, but it was so cheaply made that I opted for the IkeLite housing instead. That housing cost TWICE as much as the actual camera. But I know the camera is safe and that model does everything I want in a camera, both above and below.
As for amphibs ( cameras that are in their own housing such as Sea&Sea, or Bonica) I'd advise against unless you don't mind lugging a large housing around on the surface or what your photos will actually look like. Amphibs are a compromise solution. They don't take great above water shots and they don't take great underwater shots. They do both only "ok" as opposed to a higher end camera that you put in a higher end housing.
When you're looking for a camera, keep a few things in mind.
What's it's power consumption like? Changing batteries is impossible on a dive.
What's it's storage format and capacity? You can't swap out cards on a dive.
How easy is it to point and shoot? You're looking through a housing with a mask on your face, can you see what you're aiming at?
You may be wearing gloves when diving. Can you manipulate those function buttons on the housing easily?
What are the options for adding things like strobes, lens or video lights later? What about the actual camera modes? You may find yourself doing macro or wide angle pics. Maybe at night? Maybe in low vis....that onboard flash can then be your worst enemy since you may not have an option to disable it and all you'll get is backscatter.
My advice... choose ten cameras that do what it is that you intend on doing. Find out if a dedicated manufacturer of dive camera housings makes a housing for those cameras. Then choose from between the ones that do.

What's the difference between a GoPro and a waterproof camera?

Adam

Okay, I've been looking into purchasing a new camera, but a good quality one, but I'm wondering if I should get a waterproof camera or a GoPro for underwater activities and stuff.

Answer
GoPros are rated EXTREMELY deep so you can take them down to 60 meters inside the waterproof housing (about 150 feet). Likewise, the housing attaches to a whole myriad of mounting systems for your head, chest, helmet or vehicle, and fully protects the camera from salt water damage and getting beat up / damaged whilst out of water too (http://www.launchhelmetcams.com/GoPro-HD-Naked-Hero/waterproof).
GoPros have a big wide 170 degree fisheye lens which is usually a pretty expensive addition to a digital camera. Also, while you may not have as many options to adjust shooting settings for stills compared to some digital cameras, I would say and GoPro HD Hero (http://www.launchhelmetcams.com/gopro-hd-cameras) is far superior to most of the point and shoots these days.

Any one know anything about waterproof cameras?

I want to buy a waterproof camera for a project I am doing. I honestly don't know much about them or where to get one. I really don't want to spend a lot but I want a great camera for amazing photos and I am willing to change my price range which the highest at the moment being $600. it would be great if you could tell me about them, where to get them, what is the best to use, etc. I would really appreciate it.

Answer
There are inexpensive waterproof cameras that cost as little as $125 like the Nikon Coolpix S31.

There is a Nikon Coolpix AW-110 which includes GPS, WiFi and can operate deeper than the S31. 18 m for 60 minutes vs. 5 m for an unspecified time

Sure, you can buy a $300 P&S camera and a $300 underwater housing, but then you will have your underwater camera in two pieces that must be combined when you dive.

Canon, Olympus, Pentax also make such underwater cameras. The cool thing is that they are also shockproof and cold weather proof in some cases.

Spend some time on those websites and see which of those companies make the camera that is best for you

How to carry your camera with you to cedar point?

waterproof digital camera offers on ... Digital Camera with Battery + Cleaning Accessory Kit Deals

Trickey

So we are going to Cedar Point tomorrow. I want to take pictures of all of us while there. What is the best way to carry it with me? I want to go on water rides too. I was thinking of getting a waterproof disposable camera and just forgo the digital camera. Any pointers would be greatful thanks.

Answer
Put it in a Ziploc bag and carry it inside a well-padded camera case. Most cases, by themselves would be sufficient to protect the camera from moisture, but a Ziploc bag will add another layer of defense. The only word of caution I would offer is that you should watch the temperature, as condensation could build up inside the Ziploc bag in extreme temperatures.

Would you spend lots for a real underwater digital camera vs buying lots of disposable underwater film camera?

AbeLincoln

We are going on a Caribean cruise. We want to take underwater pictures of our snorkeling adventures. We have the choice of buying lots of disposable underwater cameras or buy one decent real digital camera. Is the image quality of a real digital camera worth the $250 vs buying several $12 disposable cameras? Basically how good are underwater disposable cameras?

Answer
I would rather trust my memories to a good quality camera in the $300 price range than to some "Made In China" disposable camera that might work - or not - and cost you those special memories.

IMO you should consider investing in the Olympus Stylus 770 SW camera. Shockproof to a 5 foot drop, waterproof to 33 feet. This is a camera you can use for years to come and never have to worry about it.

A quick perusal of Yahoo! Shopping found it at Abes of Maine for $299.99, at Monitor Outlet, Inc. for $323.99, at Amazon.com Marketplace for $316.77.

Olympus offers several models of their SW line so you might want to do a comparison of the features and benefits of them before making a decision.
