If you need one for under $100, I suggest you go for the Kodak C123

Best waterproof/underwater camera...?

Looking to get a waterproof point and shoot camera. Any real recommendations out there? Preferably advice from those who have used a waterproof camera before. Any examples of pics you have taken would help as well.

Answer
Currently the Panasonic TS3 is the best choice. Here's one review of this camera: http://waterproofdigitalcamerablog.com/2011/07/panasonic-lumix-dmc-ts3-dmc-ft3-review/

What is the latest kind of waterproof camera?

Or the best wp camera?

Answer
It seems that the waterproof camera that really delivers quality images is the Canon D10. It looks really cool, one giant cyclops' eye of a flash. But the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS1is quite impressive as well. Read the detailed review to find out more: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/Q209waterproofgroup/page17.asp

Here's a quote:
"The Canon PowerShot D10 certainly put in an impressive performance both in and out of the water. It was one of the most responsive cameras to use, and at the same time it produced some of the sharpest and most detailed images of all the cameras in the group at lower ISO settings. On the downside the 3x zoom with no wide-angle capability might be a bit limiting in some situations. it is also the least compact camera in the group.

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS1 was not far behind the D10 in low ISO image quality, and produced the best image quality in the group in low light. It also features the widest zoom range with more telephoto reach, though this also meant that images produced at the telephoto end of the zoom were a lot softer than those on the wider end. The TS1 featured the most comprehensive video mode of all the cameras in this group test, and was the only one with AVCHD lite recording functionality. It also has the highest rated battery life of all cameras in this group (according to CIPA standard tests). Despite all these features there were operational annoyances and poor flash performance that dragged down its overall rating."

waterproof cameras??

Hayley S

okay well in april we are going to be going to disney world for a vacation and i have been to disney like 5 other times but this is the first year we are staying on disney property and i think it is gonna be a lot of fun but i have been having trouble with my camera and my parents agreed that they would buy me one but that would be the one i would have to keep for good since this is my fourth camera. so i have been doing some research and i really want it to be waterproof since we will be swimming and going to water parks. so my question is does anyone know of a good digital waterproof camera that is really good? and well worth the money? thanks!!

Answer
The Olympus stylus 770 sw is waterproof up to 33 feet without a case. It is also shockproof, snowproof, and crushproof.

Should I get a waterproof camera?

Cupcakegir

I already have a great camera that is not waterproof, but I think it would be great to get a waterproof camera. I don't go to the beach or pool that much, but I do sometimes, and every year I go to Vermont where I swim in the lake. I found a waterproof camera on amazon for pretty cheap. Do you think it would be worth it to buy a waterproof camera or should I just use my non waterproof one?

Answer
it depends on 1. how much you use your camera, and 2. if you can replace the camera with it. also, what price is the camera, is it higher or lower than the original cameras price or is it being sold for the same amount. you could also use an alternative like a plastic bag or a plastic casing, or if you have the know how just make your own plastic case, although the plastic bag i wouldn't suggest since the bag can accidentally get opened. it all comes down to if you will use it, if you wont use it, then it wouldn't be worth it, if you will use it, i would say, get it, and if you do find a picture you want to take but you don't come back to that place often, it would be a good idea for that one time underwater shot.

Please help me choose a camera!?

Nicole

I am looking for something with good zoom capability, takes good pics in low light, has continous shooting at somewhat fast speed, and has good image quality. It doesn't need to be super compact, I am not worried about size. Around 10-12 mp would be nice. I will prob buy from ebay, so price will be under retail, my budget is 300$ max

Answer
All told, Canon's PowerShot D10 is a stellar adventure camera. It's more than just a waterproof camera that's only marginally larger than a standard P&S, it's a rugged, lightweight shooter that should suit most everyone but the professionals in attendance. For you all, there's always the $3,000 5D Mark II housing. Priced at around $300 on the streets, we'd say that you'd be hard pressed to find a better bargain considering just how flexible this is. If you've already got a DSLR for your serious shooting, there's no reason the D10 can't be your one and only point-and-shoot companion, regardless of whether you're in or out of the drink. And as for you argonauts -- well, you'd just need a darn good excuse to avoid this.

Can someone help me decide what camera to get?

Andy

I recently got into photography and i was introduced and used the Canon T4i. I was looking up to get my own because it was somebody elses. I want to get the T4i because i feel somewhat familiar with it now. But i was wondering is the T3i a good choice as well seeing its a few hundred dollars cheaper or should i get the T5i which is similar in price to the T4i. Is there a significant difference in these cameras? I also used the Canon 5D mark iii but that is currently out my price range lol. It was awesome though :) Thanks for any tips/advice also any good/reliable places to purchase one of these would be nice as well. Thanks again!

Answer
Basically they're all the same, all dSLR's. That covers all brands and models. All are good so you won't have any problem whatever your budget is. A significant difference will only be felt if you have a special requirement like articulated LCD or remote flash firing and your money does not allow you to get the exact model that has those features. Otherwise, you simply pick the most expensive dSLR you can afford and enjoy it.

I know you'll be picking Canon but here's something I'll tease you with anyway - waterproof and sandproof for the times you will want to take better pictures on the beach.

Can you confirm New Zealand's Milford Track options?

High Perfo

I'm considering walking the Milford Track. So far I can only find 2 options for doing this:

Either:

1 - I carry everything I need, including bedding & food, and stay in in a bare-bones lodge without a shower option. This is the cheapest option, but requires carrying quite a bit of weight (problem for me right now with a foot injury (yes, I can do the hike, but should keep the weight pressure to a minimum).

or

2 - Pay for a guided tour, where the hiker (I) don't carry more than what I want, and have food & bedding provided (among other things). This costs more (the cheapest I've seen is $2,000/person, at $400/day), but easier on the body.

I'm stuck in the middle. Not the guided tour type at all, but probably shouldn't carry so much weight on my feet (such as bedding & lots of food). Got any solutions, insight & ideas?

Thank you.
Thank you all so much for the insights. How could I pick a best answer?...I don't know...

I can manage carrying around 15 pounds (approx. 35 kilos) for 4 days straight, but not more. Have Plantar Fasciitis in both feet, comes & goes, but sure to be an issue if I stress them for days in a row. I'm considering trying to find a series of day hikes around Fiordland to be able to break up the stress on the feet by alternating days.
Would anyone have any ideas on good 1-day hikes, particularly in the Fiordland area, but anywhere in NZ is helpful as I'll generally be driving around much of both islands?

I'm also hoping for a 1-day hike near Fiordland that allows me to gain elevation similar to the great experience of McKinnon Pass...but in a day...up then down...due to me feets :)

Thank you.

Answer
Hello!
When are you planning to go? If you go in summer you can easily pack light but if you go in winter is a different story...
Anyway, I've done the Routeburn track in January last year (summer) and I carried a small pack keeping my things to a minimum. I had one lightweight sleeping bag, one change of clothes and waterproof clothes(just in case!), camera and videocamera, utensils for eating, dried food, snacks and I kept it to less then 5 kg...The track was 3 days but I had food for an extra day I spent in Milford area.
I don't know how much weight you can carry without hurting your foot so if 5 kg is too much you should consider a guided tour: you don't have to walk with them, you can follow your pace and enjoy the nature (the Milford track during high season is one way only so you won't meet anybody!)
By the way if you want to do the Milford track you have to book well in advance!
Whatever you decide to do enjoy New Zealand, I loved and it is my favorite country!

I don't know any day walk in the Fiordland but I've done a really nice one in Arthur's Pass, the Bealey Spur track, it's a day walk around 4 or 6 hours, with amazing view of the mountains, it's not on the Lonely Planet so there's no crowd!
But anyway wherever you go in NZ you can buy the small brochures of parks with all the day walk, it's very well organized, plus the guys working there will help you choosing one, they are experienced and very concerned about people safety so they will help you properly!
Obviously another great one is the Tongariro Alpine Crossing in the North Island (Mount Doom if you are a LOTR fan) you won't meet elves and other little creatures but you'll spend an amazing day through volcanos, craters, blue lakes and lush forests! It's 19.4 k but easily done in 6 hours.
Please when you are in NZ visit the Catlins, most of the people don't go there but it is an amazing area where you'll have the chance to see amazing wildlife!
One last thing, if you go to Waitomo to see the caves (North Island) spend the night there and ask the locals where to see glowworms in the night, there is a place in a forest where there a milions of them and they look like stars and it's really a great feeling when you are there (also not in Lonely Planet!!!)
I really really love it!!!
Ciao

what to take on a hiking trip?

Nicole

I have a 14 month old, 2 year old and a 5year old
I have ibuprofen, benedryl, first aid, sunscreen, hats, cut up fruits and vegetables ,water and pb and j's and an umbrella.this is their first hiking trip and I want to be prepared. Thank you!

Answer
What to Pack
The following is a list of food and equipment u may take for a 4 day hike.
Warm clothing as the weather can turn bad in the mountains at any time of year.

Clothing
Its all to do with layers when keeping warm. Air gets trapped between the different layers of clothing and warms up.

pile/fleece jacket
waterproof seam-sealed jacket
lightweight fleece top/woolen jersey
2 t-shirts
polypropylene top (couple if winter)

waterproof seamed-sealed pants - or just wear shorts if it is raining
pair of lightweight trousers - or not, I put them on when I get to a hut
pair of shorts
underwear
polypropylene bottoms

3 pairs of warm woolen socks
warm hat
warm gloves

lightweight pack towel
Good sturdy tramping boots
jandels < NZ term for sandals. A lot of hikes you will need to cross rivers so something dry to put on when you get to the hut. A guy from Czech I met hiking a few years ago just brought along a pair of soles which he put inside his socks.

Food
Use small zip-locked bags to store some of the food in. Don't get to fancy as anything tastes good after a days walking.

Although the dehydrated food you buy in a bag tastes OK and is convenient, it's expensive and like most packet food "serves 1" means one rabbit.

Breakfast
5 big cups of muesli (I usually take extra just in case I get stranded)
chocolate chips to add to my muesli
4 cups of milk powder

Lunch
loaf of bread / pita bread if doing a longer tramp
couple of tablespoons of Vegemite
couple of tablespoons of butter

Dinner
4 packets of pasta and sauce
6 tablespoons of butter
8 strips of bacon to add to pasta and sauce
extra pasta to add

Extras
12 muesli bars
12 teaspoons of coffee
10 tablespoons of sugar
couple of packets of soup

Gear
good sleeping bag. I prefer down for its size/warmth ratio. They say that sleeping bag liners add around 5 degrees of warmth i.e a -2°C sleeping bag will become a -7°C
cooking equipment - MSR, Primus etc
fuel for cooker
1 plastic cup
1 plastic tablespoon
1 lightweight pot (I eat out of it as well)
torch - headlight
pocket knife
map
small first aid kit and insect repellent (sand flies are murderer in places)
camera - for me this is my heaviest item a digital SLR so I can take nice pics for you people Smile
backpack and pack-liner

umm I think thats about it...hope it would help :)

What is a good waterproof digital camera?

Mandy L

I'm looking to buy a waterproof camera. I would also like it to be shockproof and sandproof. I would like it to be pretty small and pretty much just good for like taking pics in the pool and stuff. It should be around 8 megapixels. It should have good battery life, too. It can't be too expensive though.

Answer
I found one Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS3 that is not only waterproof but with powerful rugged design.

they are selling it here at a very good price:

What is a good waterproof digital camera?

hgfdsa

Ok, so I need a good camera that works good in all light not just in the water or in the sun but for anything. I was looking at the fugifilm finepix xp 10 but heard its not to good in low light and the lens's get water in them if their underwater for too long. I also want to record videos they don't need to be that good but I just need to be able to hear it ok and see it ok.
I want this camera to be something I can do everything with and not have to worry about breaking or taking bad pictures.
The camera should be under 700 dollars though I would really like it if it was under 500, since I will be working hard this whole summer to earn it.
I know it's alot to ask for, for a little digtial camera but all I'mreally looking for is:
-Something that won't break in water and will take good pictures and video underwater
-The camera to work great on land in any light
-The video quality decent but the sound pretty good
-The water won't ruin the camera at all
-A camera that you can recharge and plug into your computer
- A slot for the memoery card (i've had a camera without, crazy right?)
Yes that's alot but I can settle for a little less
Thanks in advance =]

Answer
For your budget you can afford any of the two most popular this moment:
- Olympus Though 6020
- Panasonic Lumix TS3

If yes, can you recommend one?

Answer
I love my Nikon D200, but I have no idea if it's a good choice for you.

Please post a new question. Tell us how much you want to spend, what you plan to use the camera for most of the time, and what your prior experience is with photography. With this information, we will be much more helpful to you.

This is somewhat out of date, but check this page for a general idea: http://tech.yahoo.com/rc/digital-cameras/103 Most cameras mentioned have been replaced with newer models, which we will hope are as good or better than what they replaced.

Here's another resource for you. Look on down the page if you are interested in point and shoot cameras instead of dSLR's. http://www.digitalcamerainfo.com/ratings.php

Here's another listing in order by ratings.

Consumer Reports from May 2007 has a short article on digital cameras and they recommend 10 different point and shoot cameras in the following order within groups according to camera design:
**COMPACTS**
Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX2 (Overall score 75) [$410]
Kodak EasyShare C875 (Overall score 73) [$165] - Rated better for shutter lag
Nikon Coolpix P4 (Overall score 65)

does anyone know any good digital cameras?

Q. that are not to expensive

Answer
Here's my standard "Best Cheap Camera" answer...

Some of our best answerers always recommends the Fujifilm FinePix F20 camera as the best-for-less choice. I have to say that I like the sample images at Steve's site (below). If Morey000 or SpaceCowboy show up after me and make this recommendation, choose them as the best answer, because I'm just passing along their suggestion. I have no personal experience with this camera.

http://www.steves-digicams.com/2007_reviews/fuji_f20.html
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/specs/Fujifilm/fuji_finepixf20.asp

My brother has the A540 and my mother-in-law has the A530 - on my recommendation - and neither one has stopped speaking to me yet. Based on this and experience with other Canon Powershot cameras, I am now recommending the A550 as a nice and relatively inexpensive camera. The A550 has more pixels than the A540, but offers less user control.

The A540 has been discontinued, but I've seen it for $140 in some stores like WalMart and Target.

The A550 costs $160 at B&H and, of course, you'll need a memory card.

Canon A550 review: http://www.steves-digicams.com/2007_reviews/a550.html

The A560 is only about ten buck more and that makes it worth considering, too. It has a slightly bigger LCD and they claim that it's one stop faster than the A550 in speed.

Canon A560 review: http://www.steves-digicams.com/2007_reviews/a560.html

Steve's reviews updates the "Best Camera" list periodically:

Waterproof cameras?! ?

Lizzy

Tomorrow I am getting an underwater DIGITAL camera. I'm going to best buy, target, and other stores like that. I want a camera that's obviously waterproof, nice quality, and not too pricey. I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions as to which camera I should buy? The most I would spend is probably around 300. I know some cameras add weird coloring, so I definetly do not wan that. I just want a camera that takes excellent pictures in the water and excellent pictures out of the water.

Answer
you should be able to find an Olympus TG310 for under $200. I used their Stylus 550wp and thought it worked pretty good. if you buy any camera for use in the water, be sure and get a flotation strap because they will sink otherwise if you let go. Olympus makes them for their models.

Your budget is very limiting. Look these waterproof cameras over.

I am looking to buy a waterproof camera with a panoramic feature, does any one know of any good ones.?

jc

Answer
Perhaps the coolest feature is that the tx10 is capable of capturing 3d pictures even with its single lens, which is made possible by an algorithm that takes 2 angles for each shot. And if that doesnât convince you, itâs also capable of taking still images while recording a video, as well as panoramic pictures with Sonyâs Sweep Panorama technology.

What are some good underwater cameras?

Bill Jense

I have a price range of no more than $450.
I don't have a camera, so I can't just buy an underwater housing.
When I say underwater camera, what I really mean is scuba diving camera, waterproof to at least 100 ft.

Answer
Latest waterproof cameras are quite good. On very rare occasions they come faulty, but the same is with regular digital cameras.
If you want camera, that makes good quality pictures on land or underwater, then I would suggest to look into these three cameras: Sony TX5, Panasonic Lumix TS2 and Olympus Rough 8010.
And all three of them cost less than $300 on Amazon.
You just need to decide which features you need more:
Sony TX5 is waterproof to 10 ft, when Panasonic TS2 and Olympus Rough 8010 are both waterproof to 33ft. And Sony TX5 has got the lowest resolution from these three. It's just 10.2 megapixels. Panasonic and Olympus have a resolution of 14MP, which is quite a great difference.
All cameras are shock-, dust-, sand- and freeze-proof. But Olympus 8010 is also a crushproof and designed to withstand a weight up to 220 pounds.
Sony TX5 gives you the opportunity to capture panoramic pictures with it's Sweep Panorama feature. Your images are automatically stitched together, which gives you the extra-wide view of the scenery.
Olympus 8010 has got the panoramic shooting option too. It also comes with a built-in 2GB memory, which is more than most cameras available on the market.
Panasonic TS2 has a good quality video recording. Although all these cameras record video in HD format. But Panasonic TS2 seems to be the most expensive out of them.
But if you do not need waterproof camera right now, Sony are releasing a new Sony Cyber-shot DSC-TX10 in April 2011. It will have a resolution of impressing 16.2 megapixels. And it is going to be the first waterproof camera that can capture 3D still images. You can pre-order this camera and it costs $330.

The best waterproof camera for 2011 is the Panasonic TS3. The picture and video are hands down the best that I have seen in rugged, shockproof cameras.

The second one is the Sony TX10.

Good quality waterproof camera?

Im going on a mission trip to a childrens home in honduras, this is my second year and im wanting to get a good camera to get more pictures of my babies this year(: we go swimming in rivers and lagoons alot and i just worry carrying a regular didgital camera around in such a rough enviroment. I want a sturdy digital camera that still takes good quality pictures, not blurry an dull(: does anyone have any information or reccomendations?

Answer
Would you be open to considering a waterproof digital camcorder rather than a waterproof digital camera? Reason being, I actually just bought this Sanyo waterproof camcorder, http://www.digitalimaginghq.com/sanyo-vpcwh1bl-blue-hd-waterproof-flash-memory-digital-camcorder.html for a few trips that I have planned this summer. I've only used it a few times, but I have used it during a recent canoe trip and it took very great video, but also does allow you to take still shocks. It may be work considering since you mentioned you were looking for something, waterproof and durables, as it sure help up during our camping trip where we were in an out of the waters and our boats. Hope this suggestion helps!

Underwater Digital Camera?

I want something less than 200$. Price over size. Recommend the brand you have or like the most and link best references please. I need a new camera in the next 2 weeks before my wedding/honeymoon!!!

Thank you in advance!
disposable ones SUCK! and I dont want just the housing. I want the full monty. I will check those links though. Thanks

Answer
I have two underwater digital cameras,
the first is Olympus 770 SW which is a shock proof, crush proof and waterproof (10mtrs) 7.1 mega-pixel camera. It's a good all-rounder and I generally only use this for when I'm out ON the water; surfing, canoeing etc.

the second is a Canon IXUS 75 and under water housing. This camera and casing is water proof to 30or40mtrs and I use this for my decent underwater photos while Scuba diving.

Both can be purchased fairly cheaply on Amazon.com

If only going on/in the water get the Olympus, but if you need a decent underwater camera at a cheap price you can't beat the Canon!

Canon powershot D10 or Olympus stylus tough?

Boo

I want clear pictures, good video, and GREAT PICS AT NIGHT AND NON BLURRY PICTURES..

lol clearly the most important thing to me is that it isn't blurry and can take pics at night. the bulkiness of canon isn't ideal, but idc it's underwater... that's the best part. well yeah which do you recommend and why?

thanks!

Answer
You can consider buying Canon PowerShot D10 12.1 MP Waterproof Digital Camera with 3x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.5-inch LCD
Some great features:
- Good looking waterproof camera, "cuteness" is very important, I disliked those clear cases that you have to screw on your camera and as one reviewer reported they can still get fogged up
- Rainproof/Waterproof up to 33 ft, good for most pools or waterparks
- Freeze proof lens up to 14 deg F
- SMART Auto mode that detects the right scene mode for each shot (works great)
- Digic 4 processor, auto shots are nicer than some older Canon cameras, optical image stabilization and motion detection to prevent blurring of images
- 2.5 inch extra bright LCD that's covered by a protective surface to prevent scratches and looks good in bright sun
- 3X optical and 12X digital zoom
- Face detection
- "Blink" detection - the camera gives a blink warning if someone's eyes are closed in the picture
- Contrast correction - Can be set while taking picture or even afterward to correct darker areas
- Continuous shooting lets you capture the perfect water shot
- Scene modes - The auto mode does a good job of sensing the conditions but if you want to set a mode you get the choice of - Night exposure, Panorama (stitch together shots in one), programmable mode, portrait, sunset, beach, fireworks, aquarium, underwater, snow, indoor, kids and pets, foliage, long shutter, color accent (keep only one color in a pic, so the water and jeans will be blue while the people black and white) and color swap (change one color to another, swap the color of your boat from beige to red).

Negatives:
- Slightly bulkier than your typical Canon SD, it's built for water, beach and rugged use, and it's rounder shape with no hard edges can take a fall or two
- No threads for filters
- No RAW mode
- No lens cap but the glass shield is scratchproof

for nikon d800 which lens should i get 1st for HDR sunsets/landscapes?

Jason a

I have decided to go with the nikon d800. 1 for its built in hdr and 2 for the 36mp. I will be using bracketing and doing real hdr the hard way to but i like the idea of built in HDR because i have alot of fun with the pro hdr app for iphone. I also like the high megapixels because i want to blow up gigante pics on canvas and i dont wanna be limited to shooting raw. I'm a beginner but am told i'm a natural by many photogs. I SUCK at shooting people for now but my knack and passion is in sunsets and landscapes and love HDR! I will also be getting a waterproof housing sometime to get barrel shots in the waves here in balboa/newport beach. OK, my question! What should my 1st affordable lens be considering my style? Thank you photography community! 5 stars for the the best and hugs for the rest! PS. the reason I am getting such a pro camera even though i'm a beginner is because I want something I can grow into and i will be taking a class on the camera not for photography. don't wanna spoil my unique style with schooling. I did the same with guitar and it has worked out great for having a distinct style and voice to my playing. http://www.nikonusa.com/Nikon-Products/Product/Digital-SLR-Cameras/25480/D800.html

Answer
Tough call because of the housing. I'd say between a 24mm & 35mm, f1.4 if you have the money, a f2.8 is fine. I'd probably buy the 28mm and then a 50mm. I use a 21 and 24 to shoot water sports with a housing but I think the 21 is a bit wide for sunsets and landscapes. I have a lot of lenses so I can go that route. If I could only pick one lens in your case I'd say the 28 but you are compromising on both ends. You need a couple of lenses. BTW, Aquatech makes great housings.

Answer
You obviously don't understand what a professional camera is. The D4 will be on store shelves in a few months for a modest 6 grand.

What camera is best for my situation?

Alicia

My husband and I are missionaries going to the Congo in Africa (jungle) for the next few years. I am looking for a water resistant, shock resistant camera (very humid environment). I need one that will focus on close ups of items without it blurring or making the objects further away in focus. My current camera is a standard digital camera but it does not focus on close objects and it is not water resistant. The camera will also need to be able to use a memory card so I can email pictures of my daughter back home to the states. Bonus points if it records videos as well.

Answer
I don't know why Jim A continues to tell people that there's no such thing as a shock resistant camera. Just search for "shockproof camera" on Amazon. There's dozens of them!

Try the Panasonic DMC-FT4 or DMC-TS4 as it's called in the USA. It's waterproof to 12 meters, shockproof for a 2 meter fall, freezeproof to -10 celcius and dustproof. It's got the macro closeup facility you want and uses standard SDHC memory cards. And it records full HD 1080p video. Even underwater!

Review here with a few other waterproof cameras: http://www.lenstip.com/134.5-article-Waterproof_cameras_test_2012_-_part_I_Panasonic_Lumix_DMC-FT4.html

I would advise buying and testing it well before you leave. The biggest recurring complaint I see with waterproof cameras is that they have quality control problems, meaning you don't always get a good waterproof one. It's not the easiest piece of equipment to make because the rubber waterproof seals are quite difficult to design install in a way that guarantees that water can't get in. Usually if they work then they do continue to work well for several years, but it's easy to end up with a duff one.

The problem with closeup macro work is that when you are very close to an object, your depth of field (the amount in focus) is not very great, so things behind the subject do tend to be out of focus. That's just part of the physics of photography.

You can compensate a bit by setting the camera into aperture-priority mode and setting a small aperture, but that in turn means using slower shutter speeds, so you are more likely to introduce blur through camera shake (unless you use a tripod) or through the object moving.

You can compensate for slow shutter speeds a bit by increasing the ISO setting, but that tends to add more "noise" to the image.

This balance of shutter speed, aperture size and ISO setting is at the core of all photography. To get a lot in focus with macro pictures you need a lot of light, a lens which stops down to very small apertures and which focuses close up and a good tripod. That's only really achievable with a Digital SLR camera with dedicated macro lens - and that isn't cheap.

Often the best macro shots are obtained by deliberately throwing everything completely out of focus except for the main object.

Underwater digital camera?

Dizzy

I've seen many underwater digital cameras but when i google them, nothing i'm looking for ever pops up. So how exactly do you get a camera underwater without damaging it? I've also seen the method where they put it in a ziplock bag but that's seriously risky if you have an expensive camera. What to do!?

Answer
Buy a waterproof digital camera. I have the Pentax Optio W10. It's not that great of a camera, but it does shot pictures underwater and ever records video with sound underwater. It has a really good time lapse mode too.

So either get a Pentax Optio W series camera or an Olympus Stylus SW camera.

Could i take pictures under water with a digital camera this way?

Alicia

If i put my regular, non waterproof camera in a ziplock bag [etc.] and put it in ANOTHER ziplock bag,
would it stay waterproof?

i know the picture or video would be blurry but would the camera have a high chance of getting damaged?

i put salt in a ziplock bag [only one] and put it in a bucket of water and it didn't get wet.

what do you think?

Answer
The safest way to go is to use OEM waterproof casings. There are alternative casings available that are sometimes a fraction of the cost but at least there is some sense of security with a brand name behind you.

That said, if none of these options are available to you and you must use a Ziplock, know the possible risk involved. You'll get people (people who respect their equipment) who tell you to buy waterproof cameras, casings, and whatnot and maybe some daredevils who tell you to go for it (people who've probably never done such a thing but would be happy to see you do it). It's ultimately your decision; no one can guarantee that it'll work.

If you're going to do it, take the necessary precautions. For example, push ALL the air out of the bags (water pressure may force the air out causing the seals to break and leak). Also, place a thin strip of brown paper or the like, whether it be towel or from a paper bag, between the first and second bag. If water leaks into the first bag it'll serve as an indicator.

For "better" results, try, if you have access to them, using condoms. It sounds silly but it works. If you're not old enough to access these, think it's gross, or don't know what they are then this paragraph and the following link do not exist... http://lifehacker.com/software/gadgets/friday-fun-waterproof-your-electronics-navy-seal+style-252183.php

What is a good digital camera?

Savannah R

I am looking for a reasonably priced, compact, point and shoot digital camera. Know of any?

Answer
Some of our best answerers always recommends the Fujifilm FinePix F20 camera as the best-for-less choice. I have to say that I like the sample images at Steve's site (below). If Morey000 or SpaceCowboy show up after me and make this recommendation, choose them as the best answer, because I'm just passing along their suggestion. I have no personal experience with this camera. I see it at B&H Photo (available through Yahoo! Shopping) for $150; $190 with a 1 GB Sandisk memory card.

My brother has the A540 and my mother-in-law has the A530 - on my recommendation - and neither one has stopped speaking to me yet. Based on this and experience with other Canon Powershot cameras, I am now recommending the A550 as a nice and relatively inexpensive camera.

Canon just introduced the A550, which has more pixels, but offers less user control. I'd be happy with the A540, but the A550 is probably also worth considering, especially since the A540 has been discontinued. I've seen it for $140 in some stores like WalMart and Target.

The A550 costs $160 at B&H and, of course, you'll need a memory card.

Steve's reviews updates the "Best Camera" list periodically:
http://www.steves-digicams.com/best_cameras.html

Consumer Reports from May 2007 has a short article on digital cameras and they recommend 10 different point and shoot cameras in the following order within groups according to camera design:
**COMPACTS**
Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX2 (Overall score 75) [$410]
Kodak EasyShare C875 (Overall score 73) [$165] - Rated better for shutter lag
Nikon Coolpix P4 (Overall score 65)
**SUBCOMPACTS**
Canon Powershot SD500 (Overall score 72)
Casio Exilim EX-Z850 (Overall score 72)
Sony Cybershot DSC-W50 (Overall score 70) [$180] [Similar to W55] - Rated better for shutter lag
Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX3 (Overall score 69) [$200] [Similar to FX-10, FX-12]
Olympus Stylus 720SW (Overall score 61) [Similar to 770SW - $360] (Waterproof)
**ADVANCED COMPACTS ("Near SLR")**
Fujifilm Finepix S6000fd (Overall score 77) [$300] - Rated better for shutter lag
Fujifilm Finepix E900 (Overall score 73) [$250]

[Things change so quickly in digital cameras that I can not find all of these models listed for sale and it's not even May yet. Prices are from B&H Photo, April 2007.]

I am having a lot of trouble picking one. I take pictures everyday and I do party alot. So i need a camera that I can take anywhere, that can take a lot of good quality pics and can withstand a party. Also I am outdoors alot but not enought to require a waterproof camera.

Answer
The Panasonic Lumix DMC-FP1 is a Consumer Reports recommended choice and here's a review:

An inexpensive space saver. Has a nontelescoping zoom and takes very good low-light pix.
Respectable response time, longer battery life than most and good at camera shake.

Highs

Very good pic quality, fast response time. Minimizes camera shake well. Good controls.
Versatile. Inexpensive.
