I am looking for decent underwater ocean camera, anything $800 and under. any recommendations?

ashhyy

I want to be a underwater photographer, i need a suggestion for a good underwater ocean camera. Send links and pictures and names.

Thanks.

Answer
An underwater housing for a DSLR generally runs about $1000.
A combination that could fit your budget is the Canon G11 and the Canon WP-DC34 housing. Bhphoto.com or adorama.com should carry it. I don't know whether the weight set is included or has to be ordered separately. It will have too much buoyancy for diving without the weight.

Is it safe to use a "Waterproof Dry Bag" for a digital camera that isn't meant to go underwater?

Kimmi

I have the Canon SX210 that have Waterproof case made for it. At least not at a normal price. Would I be able to use a "Dry Bag" like this one: http://cgi.ebay.com/Waterproof-Under-Water-Digital-Camera-Case-Dry-Bag-20m-/270635592754?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3f03236c32 and not damage my camera? If so how deep would it be able to go?

Answer
I wouldn't use a bag. I'd either buy a case or buy a waterproof camera and dedicate that to underwater use.

I used to have a FantaSea brand case for one of my cameras, but it ended up being just too bulky to take with me all the time - so I bought a dedicated waterproof camera (Olympus 8010).

While the case was rated to 200Meters and the camera is only rated to 10Meters, I don't go that deep, so the 10Meter depth is fine for me.

If you go with that bag, check to see if it has a depth rating.

If it is not specified - I would not even consider buying it.

And if there is a depth rating - I bet it's no more than 3 to 6 ft.

What is the latest kind of waterproof camera?

BananaSpli

Or the best wp camera?

Answer
It seems that the waterproof camera that really delivers quality images is the Canon D10. It looks really cool, one giant cyclops' eye of a flash. But the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS1is quite impressive as well. Read the detailed review to find out more: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/Q209waterproofgroup/page17.asp

Here's a quote:
"The Canon PowerShot D10 certainly put in an impressive performance both in and out of the water. It was one of the most responsive cameras to use, and at the same time it produced some of the sharpest and most detailed images of all the cameras in the group at lower ISO settings. On the downside the 3x zoom with no wide-angle capability might be a bit limiting in some situations. it is also the least compact camera in the group.

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS1 was not far behind the D10 in low ISO image quality, and produced the best image quality in the group in low light. It also features the widest zoom range with more telephoto reach, though this also meant that images produced at the telephoto end of the zoom were a lot softer than those on the wider end. The TS1 featured the most comprehensive video mode of all the cameras in this group test, and was the only one with AVCHD lite recording functionality. It also has the highest rated battery life of all cameras in this group (according to CIPA standard tests). Despite all these features there were operational annoyances and poor flash performance that dragged down its overall rating."

I'm looking for a compact digital camera which I can use both in and out of the water. Most of the good waterproof cameras which I have found are only rated to 10 meters, which is insufficient. Am I better off buying a regular camera and a waterproof case? I have seen some of these offered by Canon.

Answer
You're best off to do a little research on the camera you really want and then see if there's a decent underwater housing for it. Personally, I'd steer clear of the actual camera manufacturer's housings. They tend not to allow use of all the camera functions and they are usually only just good enough that they can claim a depth rating of 130ft max. You're better off protecting that camera investment by purchasing a decent housing like an IkeLite ( if it's available for your camera). They're rated to 200 feet and each is factory tested to pass that. I own a Canon A720IS, that canon does make the housing for, but it was so cheaply made that I opted for the IkeLite housing instead. That housing cost TWICE as much as the actual camera. But I know the camera is safe and that model does everything I want in a camera, both above and below.
As for amphibs ( cameras that are in their own housing such as Sea&Sea, or Bonica) I'd advise against unless you don't mind lugging a large housing around on the surface or what your photos will actually look like. Amphibs are a compromise solution. They don't take great above water shots and they don't take great underwater shots. They do both only "ok" as opposed to a higher end camera that you put in a higher end housing.
When you're looking for a camera, keep a few things in mind.
What's it's power consumption like? Changing batteries is impossible on a dive.
What's it's storage format and capacity? You can't swap out cards on a dive.
How easy is it to point and shoot? You're looking through a housing with a mask on your face, can you see what you're aiming at?
You may be wearing gloves when diving. Can you manipulate those function buttons on the housing easily?
What are the options for adding things like strobes, lens or video lights later? What about the actual camera modes? You may find yourself doing macro or wide angle pics. Maybe at night? Maybe in low vis....that onboard flash can then be your worst enemy since you may not have an option to disable it and all you'll get is backscatter.
My advice... choose ten cameras that do what it is that you intend on doing. Find out if a dedicated manufacturer of dive camera housings makes a housing for those cameras. Then choose from between the ones that do.

I'm looking to buy a waterproof camera. I would also like it to be shockproof and sandproof. I would like it to be pretty small and pretty much just good for like taking pics in the pool and stuff. It should be around 8 megapixels. It should have good battery life, too. It can't be too expensive though.

I am planning a camping trip at the end of the year in texas. We are going to be completely ruffing it with no running water other than what we bring or find naturally. No electricity or any other creature comforts. How do I plan for it? What do I need?

Answer
I cant agree more with C_Kayak_. You really need to ease into a trip of this duration and try out a weekend trip first with someone that's been camping before to help you learn the ropes. Build up to a week long trip and know your gear as well as your own limitations before you should even think about planning an adventure like this. That having been reiterated...I'm Happy to hear that you have caught the camping bug. Its always a fantastic adventure to explore the great outdoors. You don't mention but I take it that you'll be disbursed camping with your car.

You probably already have a lot of stuff that you can use for camping in your house.

Here's a short list of camping equipment:

Shelter - Tent, poles, stakes, ground sheet
Sleeping - Sleeping bag, sleeping pad
Essentials - Water bottles& water purification methods, waterproof matches/lighter, map & compass, basic first aid kit, whistle and/or signal mirror, nylon cord-50', pocket knife, emergency blanket, extra food, extra clothing, sunglasses, sunscreen, water purification, headlamp or flashlight and extra batteries. Keep these items in your day pack when you go hiking and exploring.
Cooking - Stove, fuel, cook set, spoon/knife/fork set, biodegradable soap, scrub pad, food
Base camp accessories - Cooler/ice chest, water bag or large jug, dish pan, paper towels, lantern, storage containers for food, Ziploc bags, large spoon, knife, spatula, can opener, small whisk, small grater, hot pad holders, plate/bowl, cup, cutting board, aluminum foil, spice kit.
Miscellaneous - bandana, camera, binoculars, repair/sewing kit, fishing gear, journal/pen or pencil, reading material, nature guides, trail games, trowel, toilet paper, personal toiletries, lip balm, bug repellant, towel, day pack.

Make sure you take clothing appropriate for the climate you expect to encounter.
Inner Layer - wicking layer: long underwear top & bottom, liner socks, outer socks, t-shirt, shorts
Insulation Layer - Wool, synthetic or fleece shirt/sweater down/fiberfill jacket, wool or fleece pants, gloves, wool or fleece hat.
Protective layer - Rain/windproof jacket & pants, gaiters, hiking boots waterproofed, camp shoes, sun hat.
Happy Trails to you!

Suggestions for a stylish waterproof day bag for carrying DSLR?

I will be traveling to Ireland and would like to take my DSLR with me. However, I don't want to lug a purse and a bulky camera bag, so I'm looking for something that will hold a wallet, light jacket, and my DSLR. I'd like for it to be something that I can carry during ventures into cities as well as be suitable for dinner at a nice restaurant.

What are the pros and cons of the Pentax K200D?

waterproof camera 30 meters on 4gb HD Waterproof Camera Watch w/ 30FPS, 30 Meters Underwater DVR ...
waterproof camera 30 meters image

.:Julia:.

I'm looking ino buying the Pentax K200D, and I've read a few user reviews... But what does the Y!A community think of it? And if you don't like it, what other camera in the same price range would you recommend?
Thanks!

Answer
Pentax is an old established camera company. Over the years it has often been overlooked by the masses while garnering praise for its lenses and quality.

The K200D is "weather sealed" which doesn't mean its waterproof but does give it an edge in damp or dusty conditions.

The K200D is still using the venerable K-mount introduced around 1975. Only Nikon boasts a longer-lived lens mount. Canon abandoned its FD mount when they introduced their EOS Rebel auto focus cameras in the late 1980s. Olympus abandoned the OM mount when they adopted the 4/3 mount. Minolta abandoned their SR mount when they introduced the world's first full-featured auto focus 35mm SLR - the Maxxum 7000 of 1985. The auto focus A-mount is used today by the Sony DSLR line.

The K200D has Pentax's version of Image Stabilization (IS) in the camera body so every K-mount lens ever made becomes, in effect, an IS lens. Nikon cannot say that since it chose to put its version of IS (Nikon calls it Vibration Reduction - VR) in mostly longer focal length lenses. Canon does the same.

Of course there are some limitations inherent with using a 30 year old lens on a 2009 K200D DSLR. Manual focus and stop-down metering will be required but those are easily over-come with practice. The same holds true for the venerable Nikon lenses from 1960.

Buy the K200D and enjoy it. No doubt someone will answer your question and tell you that "... pros only use Nikon and Canon ..." which will likely come as a surprise to pros using Leica, Hasselblad, Mamiya, Leaf and those using 4x5 film view cameras.

What is the best lomography camera? (for an amateur)?

Mandee

I've been looking around for a good, well priced lomography camera, and I've found a few that I think might be good, but I have /no/ experience with film cameras, so I'm not sure which would be best.

The one's I've found are:
Diana Mini 35mm for $40 (film included)
Superheadz slim white angel 35mm (wide angle) for $20 (BQ: is there any difference in the colors of these cameras? Because only the "white angel" is $20, all the others are $30.)
Holga 135 BC 35mm $50
Diana F+ Medium Format 120 mm for $40
Holga 135BC Plastic 35mm Camera - "Black Corner" Version for $50

BQ: I live in Oregon, so would they be ruined if I used them in the rain?

I'll be grateful for any/all advice - thanks! :)

Answer
The answer may surprise you.

The prices are within the costs normally associated with plastic cameras with plastic lens elements

Which camera you choose really will have to do with the subjects you want to shoot.

And of course, you need to be aware that those cameras only have two lens apertures and one timed shutter plus bulb.

That is a very limiting number of options when you need to get the right exposure with a camera with no light meter

A few years ago, when the LOMO craze was just starting, there was only one camera type available. Yes it still had the two lens apertures and a single shutter speed, but with those two limitations, many artists, experienced with the fundamentals of photography were drawn to the LOMO for artistic reasons, not quality

With the original LOMO that used 120 film, they could get amazing vignetting. In addition, other flaws could pop up in the course of creating their art.

The film could become scratched on the the emulsion side, causing black streaks through the film or the scratch could occur on the base side of the film, causing white streaks through the film and if lucky, both sides of the film could be scratched. The camera being made of very inexpensive plastic would some times cause the back of the camera to allow light leaks which would cause fogging of the images.

When you added all this up, artists loved the fact that much of these flaws were intermittent and so it was a little like finding a prize in the Cracker Jack box, you just never knew what little surprises they would get each time the had the film processed.

Being the marketing people they are, Holga and Diana + started making variations on the theme. 35 mm adapters which produced images that were 35 mm edge to edge including the sprocket holes by 60 mm long, the width of a 120 negative. Fun, but hard to print. Now they sell a 35 mm version of the LOMO which produces the more conventional 36x24 mm image frame.

In the end, you still have a camera you paid $40 for and you have to have some level of photographic knowledge to use them successfully, doe to their limited exposure control

With this knowledge, you will better be able to pick the camera that best suites your photo artistic needs.

RAIN: NO camera unless it is one of the few P&S waterproof type, should ever be exposed to rain. Even though my dSLR is moisture resistant, I still use a RainSleeve to protect it and the lens from rain

I have a budget of like £150 and it would be much easier if the camera could be bought in the UK. I'd like it to be quite up to date so about 10 megapixels, good zoom and you can add loads of effects like black and white etc and you can add text to the photos as well etc.

Thanks :)

Answer
The only cameras I know of in the UK that are shock- and water-proof are the Olympus Mju series. Whether or not they're under 150 pounds I dunno. The zoom will be average on them and they'll have lots of colour features. No camera will allow you to add text to the photos but that can easily be done with a free computer program like Picasa.

Soli

Don't say England or Asia... typical. :/

Answer
I agree with Soli. Patagonia is a wonderful place to explore. You must, of course realize that this name covers an enormous landmass, probably larger than France.

I suggest the southern tip, covering both Chile and Argentina. Been there, loved it. Can be too rugged so get a proper map.

Other places are the Islands off the coast of Thailand. Look up http://www.thesanctuarythailand.com/ they are a good starting point for local backpacking and also some island hopping.

Don't forget Northern Norway in the time of the Midnight sun. Hiked a mountain off Berings Sea, near Tromsø and continued North to Nordkapp, the northernmost point on contiguous landmass in the world, next stop, North Pole over the water.

Try bicycling from Vienna to Prague, ca 350 km on side roads. Would take about a week without "killing you".

South Island of New Zealand - totally amaaaazing. Well worth several trips.

And, on the subject. Backpacking means - GO LIGHT - no computer, no heavy camera. One set of clothes on you, hiking boots on your feet and light shoes in your back-pack together with THREE sets of quick-dry nylon or Polyester clothing. Light sweater and waterproof wind-breaker for inclement weather. Total weight ~ 8 kg.

what should i bring/do in New Zealand in Jan-Jul?

DtEk7036

i'll be visiting NZ in Jan-Jul. i have no idea what to bring/do

Answer
Oh where to begin!

Let's start with the basics. You're going to be there primarily during warm months, but it will cool off at the end of your trip. Weather conditions will vary greatly depending on where in New Zealand you end up staying. But in general, New Zealand has an extremely temperate climate, never getting too cold or too warm. That isn't to say you won't completely burn up some summer days, it can get very warm! Still, the coastal climate keeps things relatively comfortable.

For summer, remember shorts, t-shirts, and sandals. And swim trunks. Kiwi's call sandals "jondals". And trunks are "togs". You'll get the hang of it quick.

If you are going to be traveling around, especially with the South Island, bring layers. You'll want to be able to bundle up if things get cold. Same goes for rain gear. Some sort of rain jacket with a hood would serve you well. Whatever bag you bring should be waterproof as to protect your goods, especially a camera - because you WILL want to take a camera.

Also note that New Zealanders do not heat their homes like is done many places. Be prepared and bring warm layers of clothing. This is, of course, subject to where you will be exactly. But I found the best way to go is to bring a bunch of light layers that could be stripped off or piled on depending on the climate I was at. New Zealand ranges from rain forest to glaciers, so you'll see anything and everything! Between your light layers and a rain layer, you should be good to go. Anything else you find you are missing can easily be bought there.

As for what exactly to do? This is a massive question, and I can't even begin to answer it all here. If you like anything related to the outdoors, New Zealand is the place to be. There is sailing, every water sport imaginable, and every extreme sport you could want. Bungie jumping was invented there, for example. I highly recommend you travel around the countryside, find hiking trails, and book yourself rafting trips, skydiving, etc. - anything and everything you can afford.

The cities of New Zealand also offer impressive cultural and historical opportunities. Museums and art galleries are unique, due to the Maori presence and influence. I have never seen anything like the culture produced from the fascinating Maori.

If you are into sports, you owe it to yourself to catch an All Blacks rugby game. Absolutely awesome stuff.

Other things to think about bringing: electric wall converter, camera, a journal, a New Zealand guide book (I have linked several in the sources), and anything else you can't live 5 some months without.

I could go on all day about New Zealand and the travels I had, but overall remember to pack for the outdoors as well as the city. Good walking shoes! You will be walking everywhere. Both for city and for hiking. And clothes to match for both as well, because you'll want to experience all of it you can. Once to get to New Zealand there are dozens of tourist information centers that can get you in the right direction, but another fantastic way is just ask the locals you meet what the best sights are. I often found out about beautiful spots and locations off the beaten trail by asking locals - and trust me, they were never wrong.

How can I keep my audio and video in sync?

waterproof camera kodak sport image
Q. I have a 'Kodak Play sport' waterproof film camera that I have recently been trying to film on. The film quality is brilliant, and the audio quality fairly good, but only on the camera. When I import it onto my computer, the audio and video in both WMP (Windows Media Player) and WMM (Windows Movie Maker).
Any suggestions on how I can:
a) Remove audio lag using WMM.
b) Stop audio lag altogether on my camera.
c) Suggest an alternative free media editing suite to do a) with.
Thanks,
MiJ.

Answer
Clarification: You are "filming". There is no *film* involved. The digital video (and audio) device you are using captures video.

As you indicated during playback, the audio and video are in synch. When the media file is transferred to the computer, the audio and video are not in synch. This symptom (also sometimes referred to as being "glitchy", is *usually* due to the computer for one or more of the following reasons:

* The computer's CPU is underpowered for dealing with the video recorded.
* The media player cannot deal with the video.
* The computer does not have enough RAM.
* The computer does not have enough available hard drive space.
* The computer is doing other work using CPU cycles that the video needs to play properly.

For playback only, try VLC player from http://www.videolan.org/ as it is more robust than WMP. As for editors - in the Windows environment, Sony Vegas usually floats to the top... But not knowing the computer environment makes this a SWAG...

best waterproof camera ratings on ... Camera another top waterproof camera. Rugged and weather proof
best waterproof camera ratings image

im going to vacation soon so i need waterproof camera but i need to know what camera have better video and pictures under water ?

Answer
The sony is water proof to 3m which means if you drop it in a puddle it will probably not leak, but I wouldn't want to trust it snorkelling or even in a swimming pool, one knock against the side and it will almost certainly flood.
The Panasonic on the other hand is rated to 10m which means it should with stand knocks in the pool or snorkelling.

As to which has the better picture quality thats a little more subjective. Technically the Panasonic has a better range of settings, larger optical zoom, higher resolution etc, but they are not the be all and end all of taking decent photographs. Neither has a dedicated underwater mode but given their depth ratings that isnt really a suprise.

Based purely on its depth rating and other spec's I'd go Panasonic.

Considering buying a newegg open box olympus waterproof camera? Opinions?

Rachel

I am considering buying the OLYMPUS Stylus 550WP Blue 10.0 MP 2.5" LCD 3X Optical Zoom Waterproof Digital Camera with the open box policy from newegg. Would this be a mistake? Would the camera somehow not be waterproof?? It would be a savings of $40 if I bought it the open box way. Is it worth the risk?

Answer
Newegg is a highly rated site with very high levels of customer satisfaction.

Buying open box is always a risk because that means that someone has been in that box. Was the camera removed? Did someone shoot photos with it? Does it carry the full maker's warranty? Did some one handle or mishandle the camera? All these are valid questions.

With newegg's high ratings however, you'll probably be safe. However I still believe you'd be better off not saving the $40 and buy new.

These kinds of deals can be so tempting but... who really knows besides newegg - I don't and I don't think you do either.

Good Luck

How to waterproof a video camera?

I recently bought an inexpensive camera, the Sony HD Webbie and have been having a lot of fun honing my photography skills but I would like to take some underwater shots. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas of how to waterproof a video camera (I also take still shots with it) without having to buy those expensive underwater casings.

Answer
There is no such thing as a waterproof video camera, aside from professional ones that are used for movies and such. Unless you happen to have an extra $100,000 layin around, I don't think you're going to get a waterproof camera. Sorry. If it's stills you are looking for, there are waterproof disposable cameras.

can you bring video camera on Summit Plummet?

Answer

Q. Hello. If anyone out there owns or has owned a Nikon Coolpix S6300, would you please give me a short review? Pros/cons? I mostly take outside shots, nature, animals, lot of night shots. Basically I need something easy to use without compromising quality.
I did a bit of research on my own but wanted to get some opinions. I just tried the Fuji Finepix XP20 and I am less than enthused. Thanks!

Answer
Do I own the Coolpix S6300 - No

But I can try throw some light, however little it may be

review, http://www.ephotozine.com/article/nikon-coolpix-s6300-digital-compact-camera-review-18850
modest fella with a decent 10x zoom

Finepix XP20, you need to understand is a waterproof, tough series camera ... so its strength lies elsewhere

Now check out the Lumix ZS8,

what different good n bad between this two camera
a) Olympus Stylus Tough 6020 Green 14MP Digital Camera, 5x Optical Zoom, 2.7" LCD, Waterproof to 16', HD Movie 720P

b)Canon PowerShot D10 Blue 12.1MP Digital Camera with 3x Optical Zoom, 2.5" LCD, Waterproof, Freezeproof and Shockproof

Answer
The D10 is a good camera, but its size and handling are awkward, it has low resolution video, a narrow lens starting at 35mm, and a short zoom range.
The Olympus 6020 Tough, on the other hand, it a lot smaller and lighter, has a wide 28mm lens, a larger x5 zoom, and high resolution 720p video.
On top of that, the 6020 costs less than the D10 as it is on holiday special discount.

DMX-CA100 vs DMX-CG100 vs DMX-GH1?

Q. So... I'm going to Kyoto as a school trip, and I need a new camera. I need you to compare the Sanyo DMX-CA100 vs DMX-CG100 vs DMX-GH1. What are their prices? Are they waterproof/shockproof? Which camera is the newest? Are they portable? Can they take pictures/videos with ease? And recommend me a camera. So.... I guess it's a vote. Thanks!!!

Answer
You don't need me. You need the Search box at the top of this page.

No need to vote. You decide yourself.

So I am considering upgrading, I kind of want something new, but I am not sure. Currently I have an iphone 4, and have always have apple products including a mac, and iPod. Everybody in my family is also an apple fan. Like I mentioned I am not sure if I want a change. A little background info on me is that I am a junior college student, I like listening to music to phone, and I use social media a lot on it. Any other smartphone suggestions is fine besides for iphone or galaxy, but I want reasons why.

Answer
I suggest you try out the Sony Xperia Z, which is Sony's flagship device.

Since u use social media alot, the Sony's Timescape UI is very nice, simple and intuitive and u get refreshed updated from FB, your tweets and all other social networking apps.
Sony has a full 5 inch display 1080p display, plus its waterproof and dustproof (if u dont want this additional feature u can go for the non water resistant one)
13.0 MP Camera , front facing (2.0MP) and runs on JB out of the box, both front and rear cam can capture 1080p videos at 30fps.
ChipsetQualcomm MDM9215M / APQ8064
CPUQuad-core 1.5 GHz Krait
GPUAdreno 320

So I suggest u go for the Sony Z, and if u do Im sure you will thank me later..:) )
Hope it helped .

What is a good price to pay for a digital camera?

mad

I really dont want to pay a lot and most are like over 150 dollars which is a lot of money i want a nice waterproof good quality easy to upload to facebook digital camera and not vivitar.

Answer
If you would like a good waterproof camera with easy upload to facebook , then I'd recommend to look into Fuji FinePix XP10. There is also XP30 available, but that's quite expensive.
If you try Amazon, you could find Fuji XP10 for round $110.
This camera has got new YouTube and Facebook Easy Web Upload function. This function allows you to preselect all those pictures that you would like to share with your friends in-camera, which saves you plenty of time.
With Fuji FinePix XP10 you can explore the sea and take pictures in the water depths of up to 3 meters, it is also dust- and shock-proof.
The resolution is very good for waterproof camera - 12 megapixels, so you will get a high quality images.
Hope that helps.
