I have a canon PowerShot A650 IS and it is NOT waterproof but I plan on wrapping saran wrap around it so it doesn't get damaged underwater. I don't want to cover the lens so the saran wrap won't block the lens or make it blurry. help please!

Answer
LOL...are you KIDDING? Is this a joke? Saran wrap?

Your camera is not waterproof...REPEAT...NOT WATERPROOF!!!
If you take it underwater you may as well say...
"It's been nice knowing you, but due to my complete s*******y, I killed you."

I'm getting my cousin (3) a digital camera for Christmas. Either Fisher Price or Vtech which is the better?

Kayla G

I'm split 50/50 on both. I've read the reviews but I just think I need more advice. Have you used it, did you like one or the other? What didn't you like? Was it worth it?

My cousin is obsessed with electronics and whenever I come over he is always trying to use my digital camera, he's very creative and needs a postive way to express himself, I think this is a good gift for him.

Answer
i would always go with the fisher price i got my son the kid tough waterproof and he loves it i got the case for it i think the whole thing with the card was about 100.00 bucks and he cannot destroy this thing i would go with the fisher price name everytime

I would like to buy waterproof camera and I am in dilemma between PANASONIC LUMIX DMC-TS2 and OLYMPUS STYLUS TOUGH-8010. Please tell me which one do you find better and why.

Or you can suggest me something else. It is important to me that it is waterproof 10m, have wide angle, make quality videos and make great shots underwater...

Thanks!

Answer
These are main features difference :

Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS2 : 4.6x Optical zoom, Dustproof = Yes, Crushproof = No, Continuous Drive = 1.8 fps, Storage included = 40 MB Internal.

Olympus Stylus Tough 8010 : 5x Optical zoom, Dustproof = No, Crushproof = Yes, Continuous Drive = 5 fps, Storage included = 2 GB Internal.

For the spec Olympus Stylus Tough 8010 is better, but rating review/popular camera a Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS2 is better, The final is depend on you.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS2 : 14.1 MP Waterproof Digital Camera, 4.6x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom, 2.7-Inch LCD, Waterproof down to 10 meters, Shockproof (rated for drops up to 6 feet), Freezeproof, Dustproof, Record high-definition movie in AVCHD Lite, etc.

Anyone know any good HD waterproof camcorders that would work great for a surf montage)?

Steven Car

I'm planning on getting a camera or camcorder to get some good footage of me surfing and eventually make a surf montage video. I just don't know what HD waterproof cameras and camcorders are out there. Go Pro cameras are certainly an option but I'm looking for other alternatives. Thank You.

How do you take black and white or sepia pictures on the Olympus Stylus-550?

waterproof camera manual mode image

melissa

This is a really stupid question because I've been able to easily take black and white pictures with all of my other cameras, but I just bought the Olympus Stylus-550 waterproof camera and I cannot seem to find how to take black and white or sepia pictures in the manual or online. Please help me. :) Thanks!

Answer
Look it up in the manual. If you have already lost the manual, browse the camera's menu system. It should be somewhere within mode or scene or special effects selection.

If you can't find one, then here's an easy way. Take the picture normally, in color, transfer the image to a computer, use the computer's photo software to change it to sepia or black and white.

If you don't have a photo software, I recommend IrFanView. It is small, fast and free. Just make sure to download the plug-ins too so you'll have the sepia filter.

If you don't have a computer, your only option then is to bring your picture (file, memory card) to a digital photo shop and ask them to convert it there.

Most capable underwater cameras for astrophotography?

Alex

Are there any underwater cameras with Manual shooting modes and the ability to capture high-ISO long exposures (at least 30 sec shutter would be ideal)? I'm looking for a camera that I can take camping (involving kayaking, swimming, etc.) and also be able to capture decent astrophotography shots that are often available in camping areas, since they are away from light pollution.

I could always buy a waterproof case for my DSLR, but I try to pack light when camping and I wouldn't want the extra bulk of a DSLR + waterproof case. Also, DSLR housing cases are really expensive!

Any suggestions for a waterproof, high-performing compact camera?

Answer
No. Ruggedized cameras don't have the same capabilities you need. If you are only shooting at or near the surface, and not diving with it, you can get less expensive surf bags for your dSLR. EWA marine makes the best low cost units. I have not used them, but Outex (http://www.outex.com/) housings look really interesting.

If you want to go mirrorless, here is a good deal on a Olympus E-PM1 camera with a housing. You would need to add strobes if you want to dive with it, but it would be good for near surface work as is.

Samsung HMX-U10
or
Panasonic HM-TA1
or
Kodak ZX1

May use will be for videoing while on holiday. I am currently favouring the Kodak model because it takes AA batteries so easy to switch out if run out of battery, but its only 720P unlike the other two which shoot in 1080P.

So which one would you recommend?
I do have a low budget of around $100 USD.

What's the best digital camera to get?

Annoymous

I've had a Kodak easyshare 10mega pixels with a 3xoptical view for the last 4years and its worked fine with me .... it recently broke the screen doesn't work anymore. My mom offered to get me a new one before I go to college. Which digital camera is the best one to get? is there one thats also waterproof?

-Thank you!
Thank you everyone! i'm going to go with a canon! =] i just needed a little camera to go out with (parties and such)

Answer
The Fujifilm Finepix F200EXR. It goes for about $325 online, but it is rated THE BEST COMPACT DIGITAL CAMERA. It is a bit pricey, but it is the best quality compact digital camera there is.The Fujifilm FinePix F200EXR is a 12 megapixels point-and-shoot digital camera features Super CCD EXR sensor provides superior picture quality, enabling a â3-in-1â sensor combination of âFine Capture Technologyâ (High Resolution), âPixel Fusion Technologyâ (High Sensitivity & Low Noise), and âDual Capture Technologyâ (Wide Dynamic Range). The camera has 5x optical zoom lens (equivalent to 28 - 140mm on a 35mm camera), Face Detection 3.0, Newly Evolved - Film Simulation Mode and a 3.0-inch, Approx. 230,000 dots, TFT color LCD monitor.

If you are looking to spend less...

The Canon PowerShot A1100 IS. This camera goes for $179.99 to $199.99. It is rated the BEST cheap digital camera out there. The A1100 IS from Canon provides quite a few above-average features for a camera in its price range. First, with 12.1 megapixels of resolution, beginner photographers will be able to make prints as large as they want. Canon includes a 4X optical zoom lens and optical image stabilization technology with the A1100 IS, both of which are nice features in a sub-$200 camera. It also runs from two AA batteries, making it handy to replace batteries while away from home.

If you want to spend a little less, check out the Canon A480.

You can get waterproof cases for these cameras. But if not:

Here are waterproof cameras that I would reccomend:

1. Canon PowerShot D10
$330 street, 12.1MP; 3X optical zoom; waterproof to 33 feet.

2. Fujifilm Finepix Z33WP
$200 street, 10MP; 3X optical zoom; waterproof to 10 feet

3. Olympus Stylus Tough 8000
$400 street, 12MP; 3.6X optical zoom; waterproof to 33 feet

4. Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS1
$400 street, 12.1MP; 4.6X optical zoom; waterproof to 10 feet

5. Pentax Optio W60
$250 street, 10MP; 5X optical zoom; waterproof to 13 feet

Does everything you want PLUS it is waterproof to 30 feet, shockproof to 6 feet, heat and cold tolerant, and withstands 220 lbs of direct force (I can stand on it holding 50 lbs). Up to 29 minutes of 30fps video. Put a silicon skin on it and you can go anywhere and shoot anything.......just wash it off when done!! I got mine at Abes of Maine, now they sell for about $285. What camera features are most important to get good quality photos?

waterproof camera that shoots raw image

I'm hoping not to spend a lot, maybe something in the $300-or-less range, but I want a new camera for family and around-the-house photos. I have my little Olympus that's compact/waterproof/shockproof/etc. which is great for photos on-the-go when I'm out, but we're expecting a baby and I want better quality photos that what my current camera can do to capture the early years.

I'm hoping for something pretty well dummy-proof - I'm no pro photographer. :) I just need to know which features to look for (and if you have a specific model recommendation, that's great too) so that when I go to comparison-shop, I understand which features are most important and translate to the best quality photos. Like, you see pictures from multiple people from a wedding, for example, and even though they're all basically the same shot of the same event, someone's camera just takes WAY better pictures. I want to own THAT camera. LOL! Now how do I find it?

Any help is much-appreciated!!
$300 is what I can sell my husband on. If a good quality camera is going to be more, then I just have to have a really good argument. :)

The reason I have it in my head that the camera makes such a big difference is when my sister brings her big old Olympus over (it's 4.0 megapixels - top of the line about a decade ago, LOL) I can take fantastic photos with it, especially in natural light. She paid $400 for it back when digital cameras were first available. My camera (a P & S Olympus that I paid around $250 for) doesn't come anywhere close to the quality, even with more than double the megapixels, and doesn't handle sunshine that well either. I want what she has - but she doesn't know anything about cameras either, she just lucked out that it takes such great shots!

Just figured someone else would know more about what I should be shopping for. :) Thanks for the input - and any more suggestions are definitely welcome!!

Answer
You could get a used DSLR for $300:
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?Ns=p_PRICE_2%7C0&ci=15488&N=4294182649

I would stick with a condition rating of 8 or better but the Canon Rebel at a 7 might not be bad. I would just call them and ask about what the condition is specifically. And keep in mind that a 6MP DSLR is better in every way than a 12MP compact.

But the big question is, do you want a DSLR? They are bigger and heavier. You either need more than one lens to cover the same range you can get with a compact, or you need a bigger, heavier and more expensive lens that still only delivers about 18mm to 250mm. That is an impressive range, but you can get 24-560mm or so in a compact. I love my DSLR and don't see myself using a compact, but DSLRs aren't for everyone. It is definitely something to think about.

I would suggest you skip the simple compacts if you really want a quality camera for photographing your new baby. Besides, you already have one in the Olympus. My suggestion would be a bridge camera which has the funtionality of a DSLR but in a smaller package. These cameras can get pretty expenseve too, so you might want to adjust your budget, like fhotoace suggested to about $400. That really gives you a lot of options for a nice camera.

As to what is important, manual and semi-manual controls are very important. Manual, shutter priority and aperture priority allow you to take control. There are scene modes, like portrait mode, but these are completely automatic and use a set standard of settings that you can't change. So you have no control over depth of field. With aperture priority you can change the aperture and alter the depth of field. With shutter priority, you can choose a long shutter speed to blur motion or water and it is difficult to do that with only automatic controls. And manual focus is a must for options. Auto-focus has its advantages but I like having the option of manual focus too.

I would want a maximum aperture of at least f/2.8 which gives you better low-light capabilities and more options on restricting depth of field. You will actually have a range for this and you want the higher of the two numbers to be as low as possible as well. So with a long zoom range like most bridge cameras have, a max aperture range of f/2.8-f/5.6 would be very good.

Those are the deal-breakers for me. Without those options I wouldn't be interested. The following features are just extra:

-Image stabilization-gives you more hand-held shooting ability.
-Zoom range of at least 28mm-200mm-gives you the ability to shoot just about everything.
-Minimum shutter speed of at least 15 seconds, but 30 seconds would be better and allow shooting light trails. The bulb setting is also nice to have.
-Maximum shutter speed of 1/2000 which you may need when using a very large aperture on a very bright day.
-An uncompressed format like TIFF or RAW which gives you higher quality files
-External flash capable

A few things that don't really matter:

-Digital zoom-it is completely useless, just forget that its there
-How many MP-8MP, 10MP, 12MP, it doesn't really make a huge difference, the big tradeoff is that you might get more resolution with more MP but you also get more noise so how many MP is something that I wouldn't worry about-choose the camera based on the other features.

Try this features search:
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/compare.asp

One other thing I will say, it isn't the camera that makes a great photo. Obviously the camera is important. If it weren't we wouldn't be spending thousands of dollars on cameras and lenses. But no matter how nice a camera is, if the photographer doesn't know how to use it, they won't get any better results than if they used a disposable camera.

I can guarantee the photos you mention where they are taken of the same event but some are just so much better than others, those were taken by people who know how to use their cameras and who have at least a fundamental knowledge of the technical side of photography.

Photography isn't just an art, it is also a science and you have to spend some time learning the science no matter how talented you are artistically. Study exposure and depth of field. Also learn how to use the meter in your camera. If you put in the time to learn you will see an improvement no matter which camera you are using.

Does the Fujifilm XP20 take good photos?

So, I am considering buying this camera, but I don't know if it takes good LAND and UNDERWATER photos! So, if people could show some examples of the picture quality, in the outdoors and indoors on land and in water that would be great!(: Also, is this a reliable, fairly easy to use camera? I'm a teenager and this would be my second camera, but my first waterproof one. So I need it to be a decent price but good for what it's worth. Is it better on water or land? And also I take a lot of pictures with my friend and I would like some underwater. Plzz Help! Thank you!(:
Also if you have any other camera suggestions, plz tell me!

Answer
I've never used it myself and maybe someone can come along and comment on that aspect, but there are a couple things worth noting.

For one, it's a point and shoot (AKA, not one of the cameras you imagine a "real" photographer using that have lenses and knobs and all the gizmos), and therefore you can only get so much out of a point and shoot.

Two, what you can do with photoshop to clean it up is also relative to the end product.

But the most important thing to remember is the camera is only as good as the photographer - I've taken some INCREDIBLE photos with my simple point and shoots. In fact, the best photo I've ever taken - even in raw form - was with a real cheap Fujifilm camera from 2008 (though I attribute half of this to incredible luck, and half to my skill).

All in all, if you find good reviews and no suggestions for a better camera in your price range, I say go for it. We all need somewhere to start and afterward you can save up for a better camera and use this one to practice. I still have all my old point and shoot cameras as backups, particularly when I'm doing something that is likely to kill my camera, since they're older I wouldn't consider it a terrible loss. :) But do get a warranty - trust me, if you don't plan on getting a new one within a year or longer, better to be safe than sorry.

What are some good waterproof digital cameras?

frecklefac

I've always thought it was a really cool idea, and lately I've been looking into getting one. I've looked at some from Canon and Olympus. I'm leaning towards Canon's D10 because it gets good reviews, is slightly cheaper than Olympus models, and because I really like Canon cameras.
Anyone that owns this camera or another waterproof camera-
Is it good price considering that it would only get moderate use?
Do you recommend this camera, or another one?
Would I be better off getting a waterproof case for my current camera (a Canon powershot a570)?

Thanks so much!

Answer
Here are 5 top rated waterproof cameras:

1. Canon PowerShot D10

$330, 12.1MP; 3X optical zoom; waterproof to 33 feet
Canonâs first foray into waterproof digital compacts looks like a cross between a Digital ELPH and a diving bell. With a waterproof rating down to 33 feet, itâs among the deepest divers in this category, but its 2.5-inch LCD and optically stabilized 35â105mm (equivalent) f/2.8â4.9 zoom lens arenât at the front of this pack. Like the other cameras here, the D10 is freeze- and shockproof, in this case surviving temperatures down to 14 degrees Fahrenheit and falls of up to 4 feet.

2. Fujifilm Finepix Z33WP

$200, 10MP; 3X optical zoom; waterproof to 10 feet
Borrowing design cues from Fujiâs teen-targeted Z30, this underwater shooter is one of the tiniest and most stylish, as well as the most affordable. Its 2.7-inch LCD is as large as they come on this type of compact. But itâs waterproof only to 10 feet, and its 10MP and 35â105mm (equivalent) f/3.7â4.2 optical zoom arenât groundbreaking.

3. Olympus Stylus Tough 8000

$400, 12MP; 3.6X optical zoom; waterproof to 33 feet
Olympus offers some of the most rugged compact cameras you can get, and its latest fits the mold. You can shoot down to 33 feet underwater, drop the camera from up to 6.6 feet, and use it in temperatures down to 14 degrees Fahrenheit. Plus, its metal construction can withstand up to 220 pounds of pressure. Sensorshift image stabilization combats hand shake, and the zoom, while not league-leading, spans an equivalent 28â102mm f/3.5â5.1.

4. Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS1

$400, 12.1MP; 4.6X optical zoom; waterproof to 10 feet
Panasonic has stepped up to the pool in a strong way with its first waterproof digital camera. Its optically stabilized 28â128mm (equivalent) f/3.3â5.9 zoom offers a nice balance of wide angle for underwater and midrange tele for land-based adventures. At 12.1MP, it affords plenty of resolution, and it has an ample 2.7-inch LCD. While we wish it could go deeper than 10 feet, its 720p video recording should make playing in the backyard pool more fun than ever.

5. Pentax Optio W60

$250, 10MP; 5X optical zoom; waterproof to 13 feet
Pentax was one of the first to offer dunkable digital cameras with its WP series years ago, and now itâs a major force. This model has plenty of room to the left of the lens to hold onto, and we like the 720p video recording, though weâd rather have a faster rate than its 15 frames per second. Its Super Macro mode should be a boon below the surface, letting you focus as close as 0.4 inches from the front of the 28â140mm (equivalent) f/3.5â5.5 lens.

What are the pros and cons of the Pentax K200D?

waterproof camera 30 meters on Mini Hd Sports Camera (720P; 30 Meter Waterproof; 4 White + 4 Ir Leds ...
waterproof camera 30 meters image

.:Julia:.

I'm looking ino buying the Pentax K200D, and I've read a few user reviews... But what does the Y!A community think of it? And if you don't like it, what other camera in the same price range would you recommend?
Thanks!

Answer
Pentax is an old established camera company. Over the years it has often been overlooked by the masses while garnering praise for its lenses and quality.

The K200D is "weather sealed" which doesn't mean its waterproof but does give it an edge in damp or dusty conditions.

The K200D is still using the venerable K-mount introduced around 1975. Only Nikon boasts a longer-lived lens mount. Canon abandoned its FD mount when they introduced their EOS Rebel auto focus cameras in the late 1980s. Olympus abandoned the OM mount when they adopted the 4/3 mount. Minolta abandoned their SR mount when they introduced the world's first full-featured auto focus 35mm SLR - the Maxxum 7000 of 1985. The auto focus A-mount is used today by the Sony DSLR line.

The K200D has Pentax's version of Image Stabilization (IS) in the camera body so every K-mount lens ever made becomes, in effect, an IS lens. Nikon cannot say that since it chose to put its version of IS (Nikon calls it Vibration Reduction - VR) in mostly longer focal length lenses. Canon does the same.

Of course there are some limitations inherent with using a 30 year old lens on a 2009 K200D DSLR. Manual focus and stop-down metering will be required but those are easily over-come with practice. The same holds true for the venerable Nikon lenses from 1960.

Buy the K200D and enjoy it. No doubt someone will answer your question and tell you that "... pros only use Nikon and Canon ..." which will likely come as a surprise to pros using Leica, Hasselblad, Mamiya, Leaf and those using 4x5 film view cameras.

What is the best lomography camera? (for an amateur)?

Mandee

I've been looking around for a good, well priced lomography camera, and I've found a few that I think might be good, but I have /no/ experience with film cameras, so I'm not sure which would be best.

The one's I've found are:
Diana Mini 35mm for $40 (film included)
Superheadz slim white angel 35mm (wide angle) for $20 (BQ: is there any difference in the colors of these cameras? Because only the "white angel" is $20, all the others are $30.)
Holga 135 BC 35mm $50
Diana F+ Medium Format 120 mm for $40
Holga 135BC Plastic 35mm Camera - "Black Corner" Version for $50

BQ: I live in Oregon, so would they be ruined if I used them in the rain?

I'll be grateful for any/all advice - thanks! :)

Answer
The answer may surprise you.

The prices are within the costs normally associated with plastic cameras with plastic lens elements

Which camera you choose really will have to do with the subjects you want to shoot.

And of course, you need to be aware that those cameras only have two lens apertures and one timed shutter plus bulb.

That is a very limiting number of options when you need to get the right exposure with a camera with no light meter

A few years ago, when the LOMO craze was just starting, there was only one camera type available. Yes it still had the two lens apertures and a single shutter speed, but with those two limitations, many artists, experienced with the fundamentals of photography were drawn to the LOMO for artistic reasons, not quality

With the original LOMO that used 120 film, they could get amazing vignetting. In addition, other flaws could pop up in the course of creating their art.

The film could become scratched on the the emulsion side, causing black streaks through the film or the scratch could occur on the base side of the film, causing white streaks through the film and if lucky, both sides of the film could be scratched. The camera being made of very inexpensive plastic would some times cause the back of the camera to allow light leaks which would cause fogging of the images.

When you added all this up, artists loved the fact that much of these flaws were intermittent and so it was a little like finding a prize in the Cracker Jack box, you just never knew what little surprises they would get each time the had the film processed.

Being the marketing people they are, Holga and Diana + started making variations on the theme. 35 mm adapters which produced images that were 35 mm edge to edge including the sprocket holes by 60 mm long, the width of a 120 negative. Fun, but hard to print. Now they sell a 35 mm version of the LOMO which produces the more conventional 36x24 mm image frame.

In the end, you still have a camera you paid $40 for and you have to have some level of photographic knowledge to use them successfully, doe to their limited exposure control

With this knowledge, you will better be able to pick the camera that best suites your photo artistic needs.

RAIN: NO camera unless it is one of the few P&S waterproof type, should ever be exposed to rain. Even though my dSLR is moisture resistant, I still use a RainSleeve to protect it and the lens from rain

I want to be able to take pictures when i am on my Jet ski etc. My price range is under $300 but i can't seem to find one. They are all too buldgy or just not nice looking. This is for a teenager so please help me if you have any suggestions. Thanks!

Answer
You presently have 5 choices. The Canon Powershot D10, the Fujifilm Finepix Z33WP, the Olympus Stylus Tough 8000, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS1 and the Pentax Optio W60.

The D10 ($330) and the Tough 8000 $400), have the best depth ratings, 33 feet. The Pentax is good to 13 feet, the other two are only go to 10'.

The Finepix is the cheapest, $200, and tie's with the D10 for cool looking! (The D10, has interchangable face plates)

The Pentax has the widest zoom range, 5x, but only is 10 mpx, vs, 12 for all the others but the Fine pix which is also 10.

The Pentax and Panasonic record video at 720p.(1280 x 720) The othere 3 at 640x480.

If I were you, I'd chose either the Olympus or the Canon, based in the fact they are probably more water and shock proof.

In your case probably the Canon, it's only $30 more than you want to spend.

Places to buy an underwater camera?

Farahhien

I enjoy scuba diving quite a lot, and I've always wanted to be able to capture everything I see on picture or video.

I'm not sure of any places in and around Vancouver that sell underwater cameras though. If anyone could help me that would be great.

Answer
A number of companies make underwater cameras. SeaLife, Sea & Sea, Ikelite and Nikonos.

And these companies make "real" under water cameras, with depth ratings much greater than any of the "waterproof" camera's that Canon, Pentax, and Olympus make.

Another option you have is to buy an underwater housing for your camera, or if you don't already own a camera, buy one and get a housing. Canon makes housings good to 160' for many of there models, and Ikelite, make even better, more expensive housings for Canon, and other brands!

Sorry, I can't help you for Vancouver, but any of the companies I lisred with ship there! As will B&H, the second link!

Okay, I've been looking into purchasing a new camera, but a good quality one, but I'm wondering if I should get a waterproof camera or a GoPro for underwater activities and stuff.

Answer
GoPros are rated EXTREMELY deep so you can take them down to 60 meters inside the waterproof housing (about 150 feet). Likewise, the housing attaches to a whole myriad of mounting systems for your head, chest, helmet or vehicle, and fully protects the camera from salt water damage and getting beat up / damaged whilst out of water too (http://www.launchhelmetcams.com/GoPro-HD-Naked-Hero/waterproof).
GoPros have a big wide 170 degree fisheye lens which is usually a pretty expensive addition to a digital camera. Also, while you may not have as many options to adjust shooting settings for stills compared to some digital cameras, I would say and GoPro HD Hero (http://www.launchhelmetcams.com/gopro-hd-cameras) is far superior to most of the point and shoots these days.

What is a good waterproof digital camera for SCUBA diving?

Sunnyboy

I'm looking for a compact digital camera which I can use both in and out of the water. Most of the good waterproof cameras which I have found are only rated to 10 meters, which is insufficient. Am I better off buying a regular camera and a waterproof case? I have seen some of these offered by Canon.

Answer
You're best off to do a little research on the camera you really want and then see if there's a decent underwater housing for it. Personally, I'd steer clear of the actual camera manufacturer's housings. They tend not to allow use of all the camera functions and they are usually only just good enough that they can claim a depth rating of 130ft max. You're better off protecting that camera investment by purchasing a decent housing like an IkeLite ( if it's available for your camera). They're rated to 200 feet and each is factory tested to pass that. I own a Canon A720IS, that canon does make the housing for, but it was so cheaply made that I opted for the IkeLite housing instead. That housing cost TWICE as much as the actual camera. But I know the camera is safe and that model does everything I want in a camera, both above and below.
As for amphibs ( cameras that are in their own housing such as Sea&Sea, or Bonica) I'd advise against unless you don't mind lugging a large housing around on the surface or what your photos will actually look like. Amphibs are a compromise solution. They don't take great above water shots and they don't take great underwater shots. They do both only "ok" as opposed to a higher end camera that you put in a higher end housing.
When you're looking for a camera, keep a few things in mind.
What's it's power consumption like? Changing batteries is impossible on a dive.
What's it's storage format and capacity? You can't swap out cards on a dive.
How easy is it to point and shoot? You're looking through a housing with a mask on your face, can you see what you're aiming at?
You may be wearing gloves when diving. Can you manipulate those function buttons on the housing easily?
What are the options for adding things like strobes, lens or video lights later? What about the actual camera modes? You may find yourself doing macro or wide angle pics. Maybe at night? Maybe in low vis....that onboard flash can then be your worst enemy since you may not have an option to disable it and all you'll get is backscatter.
My advice... choose ten cameras that do what it is that you intend on doing. Find out if a dedicated manufacturer of dive camera housings makes a housing for those cameras. Then choose from between the ones that do.

Considering buying a newegg open box olympus waterproof camera? Opinions?

Rachel

I am considering buying the OLYMPUS Stylus 550WP Blue 10.0 MP 2.5" LCD 3X Optical Zoom Waterproof Digital Camera with the open box policy from newegg. Would this be a mistake? Would the camera somehow not be waterproof?? It would be a savings of $40 if I bought it the open box way. Is it worth the risk?

Answer
Newegg is a highly rated site with very high levels of customer satisfaction.

Buying open box is always a risk because that means that someone has been in that box. Was the camera removed? Did someone shoot photos with it? Does it carry the full maker's warranty? Did some one handle or mishandle the camera? All these are valid questions.

With newegg's high ratings however, you'll probably be safe. However I still believe you'd be better off not saving the $40 and buy new.

These kinds of deals can be so tempting but... who really knows besides newegg - I don't and I don't think you do either.

Good Luck

What kind of scuba water proof camera should i get?

I would like one, because i really love the ocean and i am going south african shark diving, in June, so i would like to to have a good camera that can take pictures underwater, and good quality pictures, and that it can zoom in fairly well. a cheap price would be nice.

Answer
Here are a list of web sites that have an assortment of cameras and housings for underwater use.
I would suggest one of the Liquid Image products for your diving needs. some of the masks have attachment for lighting. The built in Mask/Camera would be idea because it can be a hands-free system. Still Camera or Video option, one less thing for you to carry or worry about. Photos of everything you see at your point of view.

You need to figure out what your diving requirements are, what you want and finally what you can afford. What kind of diving and how deep you will be going and how much equipment you will need to carry.

Hope this information helps.

What kind of scuba gear should I rent or buy?

mia b

I just signed up for scuba classes at Underwater Sports here in Seattle, WA but am opting to do my final dives in the Bahamas in July.
Since I am not rich I'm wondering what scuba gear I should rent instead of buy, for a beginner.

Also - should your wetsuit fit snug or loose? I found an Oceanic brand 2 pc wetsuit on craigslist for $40 (in great condition) that's for a female 100-120lbs & 5'-5'5" tall, and I am 120lbs but almost 5.6.

What gear do I need for the Bahamas? Should I just rent there?

Answer
Hello look you just need to get the basic stuff if you´re a beginner which are:

Fins (you can choose between normal or boot type if you choose boot type you would also need a pair of booties)
I recommend Aeris,Beuchat,Scuba Pro or Mares

Snorkel with purge valve

Mask be sure is Tempered Glass (an accident without tempered glass would be a disaster for your eyes)
Be sure it fits properly

There is a Scuba Pro kit that contains snorkel and mask.
Optional equipment

Skin (the suit) if you´re going to Bahamas the weather should be warm you do not need a Neoprene suit of 3mm or 5mm you would feel like a chicken in the microwave. The skin suit is less than 1 mm thick and is not expensive.

Dry Bag Water proof, they`re cheap you can hold inside a towel your camera your room keys stuff like that without getting wet inside the boat.

Gloves

That's basically all you need

Ideally it would be something that can be used onland and under water.
thanks for the info. I am an Advanced Open Water Diver with my deep specialisation. I regularly dive to 100-130ft.

Answer
You can use most camcorders under water just get a waterproof housing. You will need to make sure that they are depth tested to more than that, 60ft isnt much, I will assume that you are at least a open water diver or better, with that you can dive up to 18m as an advanced OW you can go to 30m, the problem is that many people go deeper than that. as a DM on air its safe to dive to about 50m plus or minus a little as ofter that air breathing can cause you to black out and die. plus the decompression time increases. Sorry I went on a bit,
you need to get a housing for at least 60m over double your original depth, you dont want your expensive camera to suddenly fill with water as the housing cannot cope with the pressure.

here is a link to a few places

http://www.bskinetics.com/en/abfrage_video.php

http://www.seaandsea.com/

the one above do complete packages

Hope this help

but to get something thats safe isnt cheap just remember the pressures involved

Good luck

Waterproof camera for diving?

Salty

I am thinking of purchasing a waterproof camera for scuba diving less then 25m depth. I like a point and shoot camera and not particularly interested in the finer points. Should I get a waterproof case for my current camera and use that or spend around £100 on a specially designed waterproof camera.

Answer
100 pounds will be just about enough to buy a decent enough housing for your camera, providing one is made for it. Check the web site of your camera manufacturer to see if they have one to fit your particular model. Another source for a housing is Ike Lite http://www.ikelite.com/ . Use the charts there to see if your camera is listed. An Ikelite housing will cost a bit more than a camera manufacturer's housing since they are more robust and have a 200 foot depth rate, but they are good. I own one for my Canon.
As for amphibious cameras. These cameras are essentially all in one units. They come in a waterproof case in some models, they can't can't be removed from. Most decent ones will be rated for a 30M depth or a little more and have the ability to be removed from the housing.
It's doubtful you'll find an amphibious camera for 100 pounds that's decent. Good ones usually start at 150-200 pounds. Examples of this type of camera are Sea&Sea , Bonica and SeaLife. All are good manufacturers and offer a wide range of products.

Buy a housing for your current camera or buy an amphib? That's going to be a personal choice and budget thing. For myself, I chose the housing route because I really like my camera and it's functions. I couldn't find an amphib that matched it's performance. I also like NOT having to lug two cameras around, buy extra memory cards, spare batteries and the like.
Edit: Those 25 dollar cameras are the disposable film ones. They are also for the most part, limited to "16 feet" meaning they actually are good to 15 feet or two atmospheres. Great option if you don't intend to do more than a holiday pic but green, they ain't. The cases are recylcled as best they can but not 100%. Yup...you get a recycled camera and case that's fine for light duty use.
Bottom line with dive gear no matter what you're purchasing is:
You get what you pay for. There are no deals on quality equipment, just discounts for regular shop customers. Buy it online, expect online service. Buy it at a physical dive shop and if you're not happy you have a ton of options.
Ebay, I'd avoid like the plague. Uhh huh, saw some Russian rebreathers in there the other day that some idiots bid on. The next divers to die for a deal online and not the first.
What happened to "if it's too good to be true......."?

Answer
Scuba could exceed the abilities of many compact underwater cameras. You can get better pictures and better water resistance with a better camera and an underwater housing. You may want to hold off and see what new models come out. The Canon G12 is pretty good, but its getting due for an updated model. Ikelite housings are usually more expensive and optimized for diving. Canon brand housings usually have positive buoyancy (which boaters like), and need an extra weight set for diving. Use silica gel packs to prevent condensation when the water gets colder at depth. Check for availability of an underwater housing when shopping for a camera. Often there is none for superzoom cameras--it creates more design problems.

Anyone ever used an underwater camera case?

phantom_of

My husband wants one of these underwater camera cases for our digital camera. Now it says it's waterproof up to 33 ft and it says it doesn't blur the camera lens so that your pictures turn out great.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=7615196528&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT

If that link doesn't work, it's a WP500 camera case.

Obviously the brochure selling it is GOING to say all that. In the past we've always used the underwater cameras and they tend to be fine but he is a man and this is a cool gadget.

But have you ever used one? Worth it or pictures still look like a disposable underwater camera? Did your camera get ruined?

We have a water resistant case for our I-pod which has to go on the cruise. I'm fine with that b/c I don't go that close to the pool to begin with. But this will be going underwater with us...so I'm a little hesitant. Anyone?

Answer
My son-in-law has one and it takes great pictures. I don't know exactly what brand he has, but I was totally impressed. The disposable underwater cameras do not take too great of pictures, not anything close to what you are talking about.
