Where can I get security type webcams and apps for around $50.?

Tim C

I've seen some at Walmart couple of years ago around $50 or so. And you could view these cameras from any computers like at work or home off a website. And some I've seen have phone apps for them as well.

Answer
Here is a bullet camera that is weatherproof, has IR so that it can record at night and is under $50.
http://www.apexcctv.com/p-867-weatherproof-ir-bullet-security-camera.aspx

In order to remotely view cameras that are not IP you will need a DVR like this one:

Here is a list of IP cameras that you can hook up to a PC:

Does the Coleman Xtreme c5wp shock waterproof camera take video?

Melanie

I just recently ordered the Coleman Xtreme c5wp shock waterproof camera. I was planning on using it for pictures at beaches and at pools. Now I'm wondering does it take video? Thank you.

Answer
Too bad you did not look at the Nikon S30 camera for under $120. It has an optical zoom and can shoot HD video. It is also shock and waterproof

http://www.nikonusa.com/Nikon-Products/Product/Compact-Digital-Cameras/26317/COOLPIX-S30.html

The Coleman is more of a toy with NO optical zoom and no listing for a video feature.

Answer
Really? How about some common sense. It's guaranteed to 5M. Beyond that? it's not guaranteed not to leak. The pressure of the water will push water into it at some point. The end for your camera.

where could i get a cheap under water camera?

i'm a ligh

my birthday is coming up, on the 13th, but my dad is taking me to get one on the 12th. i can't spend anymore than $100, i was wondering what's a good brand, and where would they have them? would they have them at best buy?
thanks!
also, i'm looking online -- and if it says water proof, does that mean it can go under water?

Answer
Any camera that states it can be used underwater will have a depth rating, i..e how far under water it can go and still be expected to work. Most of the cheaper items are only good for 10ft-20ft/3.5-6.5m and that is assuming they don't get knocked.

Probably one of the cheapest will be something like a Vivitar 8426 , waterproof to 10ft/3m and 8mp.

If you already have a decent make of camera then you should be able to get a dive housings for it, they are made for most common makes of camera. Usually made of very strong plastic they replicate all/most of the buttons and are protected by single or double O-ring seals. Depth ratings range from 10ft to 200ft+ depedning upon price. In most cases you will pay as much or more for a decent underwater housing for a camera than you do the camera.

An alternative is a 'baggy' style housing, basically a strong double sealed plastic bag, usually good to 15ft or so.

Any suggestions on buying a kayak and helmet camera for my situation?

theplaneti

I'm moving to Oregon in a couple months and want to take up rapids kayaking when I do. As a novice any tips on buying a kayak and also about how much am I looking at when buying (I don't care if new or used, just inexpensive as possible). Also I'll be wanting to get a waterproof helmet cam for when I'm on the water. Any suggestions on what I need to make sure when buying it and cost?

Answer
I would recommend sticking with the GoPro Hero series cameras. All the whitewater and sea kayak paddlers I know who film their trips use them and swear by their reliability and toughness. The quality of the video from them is outstanding and they have a lot of accessories for helmet or boat mounting. REI stores have displays demonstrating them and stock them. Their salespeople are going to know more about using them on the water than the folks in electronics stores. I'm pretty sure you get the member dividend of 10% after buying one there, too. I plan to pick one up at my REI branch this summer.

There are plenty of GoPro videos on YouTube -- run a search and check them out.

As for buying a kayak, you should not do that until you've gotten some guided instruction in whitewater. It is NOT something you should try to teach yourself on your own.

There are hundreds of kayak models and dozens of styles -- the guided trips will provide you with boats and you can get a feel for the types and for the fit. Fit is very important in a whitewater boat and your body size has to match the boat. Plus there are river runners, playboats, squirt boats, surf boats, etc.

Once you have a sense from taking some training trips of what kind you want, you can usually find used whitewater boats for around $300 to $600. I just bought a 6 year old ww kayak myself (a Dagger RPM) for $275 plus $60 for a good used Harmony whitewater paddle, $30 for a helmet and $40 for a sprayskirt and a set of flotation bags. So, that was around $400 for the whole set-up.

By the way, here is an excellent blog by a guy who builds kayaks in Oregon -- super cool dude. Though he is mainly into sea kayaks he also does local whitewater out there and you can find some of his trip reports with photos on paddling the fast creeks out there. He's a real character and a top notch paddler. Enjoy!

olympus waterproof camera 770 sw image

Starsky

Answer
Nah, it's not Canon, who prefers to focus on providing image quality first, then gimmicky features next.

You should have a look at one of the Olympus models that are waterproof and shockproof (which means they don't scare easily, lol). Oops, no, it means they are supposed to withstand a drop from a very small height.

Stylus 790 SW, which is also freezeproof. It's great for winter fun (skiing, snowboarding, sledding......avalanches).

or the Stylus 770 SW or Stylus 720 SW.

Just don't expect exceptional image quality from these cameras, though.

In your opinion, what does you think is the best waterproof digital camera on the market today?

Kmdickerso

im not lookin for big and bulky im looking for sleek and stylish. thank a bunch!

-KMD AHH 27!!!

Answer
There are really only 2 choices.

the Pentax Optio W20 (available for $232 at buydig or Beach)
and
Olympus Stylus 770 SW (about $350)

The Oly is a bit better of a camera, can go deeper (10m vs 3m) and is shockproof as well. But, it costs a bit more.

What's the difference between a GoPro and a waterproof camera?

waterproof camera housing on Digital Camera with Waterproof Casing - Waterproof Digital Cameras
waterproof camera housing image

Adam

Okay, I've been looking into purchasing a new camera, but a good quality one, but I'm wondering if I should get a waterproof camera or a GoPro for underwater activities and stuff.

Answer
GoPros are rated EXTREMELY deep so you can take them down to 60 meters inside the waterproof housing (about 150 feet). Likewise, the housing attaches to a whole myriad of mounting systems for your head, chest, helmet or vehicle, and fully protects the camera from salt water damage and getting beat up / damaged whilst out of water too (http://www.launchhelmetcams.com/GoPro-HD-Naked-Hero/waterproof).
GoPros have a big wide 170 degree fisheye lens which is usually a pretty expensive addition to a digital camera. Also, while you may not have as many options to adjust shooting settings for stills compared to some digital cameras, I would say and GoPro HD Hero (http://www.launchhelmetcams.com/gopro-hd-cameras) is far superior to most of the point and shoots these days.

What is a good waterproof digital camera for SCUBA diving?

Sunnyboy

I'm looking for a compact digital camera which I can use both in and out of the water. Most of the good waterproof cameras which I have found are only rated to 10 meters, which is insufficient. Am I better off buying a regular camera and a waterproof case? I have seen some of these offered by Canon.

Answer
You're best off to do a little research on the camera you really want and then see if there's a decent underwater housing for it. Personally, I'd steer clear of the actual camera manufacturer's housings. They tend not to allow use of all the camera functions and they are usually only just good enough that they can claim a depth rating of 130ft max. You're better off protecting that camera investment by purchasing a decent housing like an IkeLite ( if it's available for your camera). They're rated to 200 feet and each is factory tested to pass that. I own a Canon A720IS, that canon does make the housing for, but it was so cheaply made that I opted for the IkeLite housing instead. That housing cost TWICE as much as the actual camera. But I know the camera is safe and that model does everything I want in a camera, both above and below.
As for amphibs ( cameras that are in their own housing such as Sea&Sea, or Bonica) I'd advise against unless you don't mind lugging a large housing around on the surface or what your photos will actually look like. Amphibs are a compromise solution. They don't take great above water shots and they don't take great underwater shots. They do both only "ok" as opposed to a higher end camera that you put in a higher end housing.
When you're looking for a camera, keep a few things in mind.
What's it's power consumption like? Changing batteries is impossible on a dive.
What's it's storage format and capacity? You can't swap out cards on a dive.
How easy is it to point and shoot? You're looking through a housing with a mask on your face, can you see what you're aiming at?
You may be wearing gloves when diving. Can you manipulate those function buttons on the housing easily?
What are the options for adding things like strobes, lens or video lights later? What about the actual camera modes? You may find yourself doing macro or wide angle pics. Maybe at night? Maybe in low vis....that onboard flash can then be your worst enemy since you may not have an option to disable it and all you'll get is backscatter.
My advice... choose ten cameras that do what it is that you intend on doing. Find out if a dedicated manufacturer of dive camera housings makes a housing for those cameras. Then choose from between the ones that do.

actually it's my parents who are anxious to give him a present.we can't go with the doctor's utilities such as stethoscope etc because he already has those. He's also quite into photography, but he like to keep his shoots as file rather than print them. We want to give him something personal OR useful :)
(oh, please forget about giving him any camera things. you know how expensive they can be :p)

Answer
It's hard to know what would be best as a gift for him without knowing what he already has. Some things that are generally useful in professional life would be nice pens if he will be having an office practice or a nice bag for carrying his utensils if he will be having a practice in which he visits the animals. If he plans on having an office some other nice things might be books about animals for his clients to read while they wait. If he likes to read books by James Herriot, who was a veterinarian, are always quite nice. If he's already read those there are many interesting books about the relationship between people and certain animals that he might like. Other items such as a business card holder or a frame for his diploma would also be thoughtful. If he is going to practice in an office a set of name-embroidered surgical scrubs could be nice. If he will be outside a lot to see his patients a nice waterproof coat or some boots could also be helpful...I'm really stretching here, but hopefully my brainstorm will get you thinking about things he might like.

I need a waterproof camera that I can attach to my kayak that has a remote option where I can turn the camera on/off and take a picture. Needs to be at least 4mp would prefer at least 5 and be no more than 200.00.

is there one thats any good that even exists?

Right now Ive been trying to find a used go pro with a remote but when you add in the 80.00 remote it always goes over 200.

Answer
The best I could find is Pentax Optio WG-1 ($199) and Pentax 39892 remote ($24). This camera is better than those GoPo even it cost you $24 more. Couldn't find anything cheaper. But Pentax site says this remote works with their compact cameras made after 2010. So u might need to do little bit digging and find a older model which works with this remote.

Im going to be spending a month in Panama in a few months, and I want to get a good camera for the trip. I am willing to spend up to $150. I want to be able to get good vivid shots of plants and animals, scenic shots, people, and possibly underwater (but thats not a deal breaker). I dont know a whole lot about cameras, what brands to choose and whatnot.

Does anyone have a suggestion? Thanks!!

Answer
I would get a bunch of $5.00 disposable water resistant cameras with a flash. They are tough. Don't need recharging and the film can be developed in many South America locations. Although the lens is fixed, as long as the scene is more than four feet away it will take great pictures and are tough as hell.
And nobody well swipe them from your luggage in Panama. Plus you won't have all your photographic assets in one basket. As an added bit of fun you can hand them out to friends in your group and inlist them to help you take pictures.

What is a good underwater camera?

soccerstar

i am going to Australia this summer and i am going to be suba diving. i was woundering what is a good underwater camera that is not to expensive but still has good quailty.

Answer
Scuba could exceed the abilities of many compact underwater cameras. You can get better pictures and better water resistance with a better camera and an underwater housing. You may want to hold off and see what new models come out. The Canon G12 is pretty good, but its getting due for an updated model. Ikelite housings are usually more expensive and optimized for diving. Canon brand housings usually have positive buoyancy (which boaters like), and need an extra weight set for diving. Use silica gel packs to prevent condensation when the water gets colder at depth. Check for availability of an underwater housing when shopping for a camera. Often there is none for superzoom cameras--it creates more design problems.

What sort of camera would i need?

Q. I want to do a documentary about sea life and this would require scuba diving i am planning to go pretty deep in an ocean so im not sure what type of waterproof camera would hold up that deep.Where can i find one qualified for this without spending 1000's

Answer
The camera is not the expensive part, its the housing.

assuming you are a sports diver you will probably go no more than 40m you need a housing that will cope with a minimum of 80m. there are a few companies that make housings for most camera makes. They are not cheap, Sure you can get cheap housings for cameras, but do you want to take the risk. at 40m the pressure on the housing is a lot, and any faults in the case/seals, will let the water pour in or implode the case.

Good luck

it is not for deep sea diving. the Playsport is only for 10 foot depth, so swimming pool or snorkel only. if you actually intend to take it in the water, get a floatation strap because it will sink if you let go.

is the olympus stylus 560wp digital waterproof camera actually waterproof or just come with a case that is?

we saw a boxing day ad for this camera but my husband thinks it might just be a regular digital camera with a 'waterproof' case. has anyone seen this camera in person? is the camera itself waterproof? we're having a hard time finding info on it online.

Answer
the oly stylus 550wp is a waterproof camera, not a camera inside a clear case. it is similar, but less expensive than the stylus 8000 "tough".

i have this camera and like it very much. if you plan to use this in the water, i recommend you get the optional floatation strap. it will sink if you let go underwater and is only waterproof to 10 foot depth.

What camera should I bring to Costa Rica?

waterproof digital camera black friday image

David

Hello answers.yahoo community,

I've been doing a lot of research on cameras to bring to Costa Rica, I'm quite indecisive, so I've come to you guys for help :(

Here's my dilemma, I have my mom's camera (~we bought it for $100 on last year's black friday):
http://www.amazon.com/Canon-PowerShot-SD1100IS-Digital-Stabilized/dp/B0012YC7AE

And another camera I just bought (just an hour ago) for $357~ (after tax) at Fry's:
http://www.amazon.com/Canon-PowerShot-D10-Waterproof-Stabilized/dp/B001SER460

I'm not sure what I'll be doing in Costa Rica, it's a study abroad for a biology/ecology credit (free of charge)

With the D10 I'll be able to take some nice underwater pictures + land pictures (or at least from the reviews) but I'll be down $357...

should I buy that camera, keep my mom's, or look for a better, high-zoom camera? e.g.
http://www.olympusamerica.com/cpg_section/product.asp?product=1449
Oh yeah, since I already have the powershot D10 (waterproof/shock proof) i'd have to return it

Answer
i would go with a rugged waterproof design, especially if you expect to be there for the rainy season. the D10 is a good general purpose camera, a little pricey since it doesn't offer anything the Olympus Stylus 550wp doesn't have. you should also consider getting extra battery packs, the one in the Stylus is only good for about 50 pictures per recharge and you are apt to want more than that on a day's outing. its a tough call as to whether more than 3x zoom will be useful. i expect that most of the action will be close in. i usually pack more than 1 camera on trips like this, but the D10 would be a good choice.

There is a new style out by Olympus that is like waterproof, crushproof, weatherproof, and they tiny and takes great pics! They have a few models on this line and they are sold at most places like best buy, circuit city...prices aren't to bad either $200-$400

I used an 8gb SD and it worked fine

Answer
Two questions - how deep are you going to go & what's your budget?

Shallow/cheap options - you can either buy a waterproof digital camera (usually ok for swimming pool depths - 2-3m or so) or you can use a flexible housing for a camera you already have (usually ok for 5-8m or so).

Fuji finepix is quite good at around £100;
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Fujifilm-FinePix-XP10-Digital-Camera/dp/B00342UTO8/ref=sr_1_7?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1300631604&sr=1-7

or the Canon Powershot D10 for just over £200;

A selection of flexible housings;

If you are going deeper than about 10m you need a rigid housing, otherwise water pressure pushes buttons you don't want pushing. A selection of compact camera & housing packages here;

These will be a few hundred pounds for both camera & housing.

At the top end of the scale is housings for DSLR's - these are several thousand pounds worth once you've bought strobes/ports as well.

What do you think are the best brand of laptops and digital camera's? (and how much $$ each)?

Q.

Answer
It really depends on how you define "best", and what you are going to be using it for.

Usually, the laptop brand does not matter as much as the components that go into it.

You probably already know if you want to get an apple, or a laptop running windows.

Make sure to get one with a good processor (by AMD or Intel - Stay away from Intel's Celerons or Centrinos - get an Intel Pentium Dual Core or one of AMDs new Quad-Core Opteron processors if you want top of the line (once they come out-soon ( http://www.amd.com/us-en/Corporate/VirtualPressRoom/0,,51_104_543~119768,00.html )))

Be sure to get plenty of memory (RAM) and a good internet connection - from best to worst (fiber optic (verizon), dsl, or cable)

A good video card also goes a long way.

As far as prices, you could be looking at around $600 to several thousand depending on what you are going to be using it for, and what you need.
If you play a lot of high-end video games or do graphics heavy stuff like video editing then you are going to need a faster processor, more memory, and a better video card which = more money.
If you primarally use the computer for going online and typing word documents (etc..), save the money on the processor, memory, and video card and instead go out and buy yourself a super fast internet connection as this will be your main bottleneck for speed when internet surfing.
Note: your network card that probably will come with your computer is 100MB/s (which translated is 838,860,800 bits/second)
Even if you leased a T3 line (which is the connection that the government uses), it can only transfer at 45 million bits per second.
So, your new computer can accept up to about 18 times as much information as the fastest possible connection you could get (assuming you are rich). Thus if you are a big internet user, you get the most value by paying for the best connection in your price range.

----------------

As far as cameras are concerned, again, it depends on what you want.

The highest quality Digital cameras are the Digital SLRs, and Pentax makes the best with the K10
( http://www.pentaxslr.com/bodies/k10 ) around $899
-These allow you to swap in and out all Pentax lenses, for semi-professional level photography.

However, you may be looking for something smaller (of the point and shoot variety if you dont want to be swapping lenses).

If you want a good quality point and shoot, Cannon offers the PowerShot S5 IS which has one of the best zooms out there (12X Optical & 4x digital for a 48x Zoom) at around $379.99

If you want a good waterproof camera, there is the Pentax Optio W30 7.1-Megapixel Digital Camera at around $299.99

If durability is a concern, there is the compact Olympus - Stylus 7.1MP Digital Camera 790 SW which is shockproof up to 5 feet and crushproof up to 220 pounds, and freeze and water resistent to a certain degree for around $299.99
http://www.olympusamerica.com/cpg_section/product.asp?product=1314

So, it really all comes down to what you are looking for. I would suggest going to a BestBuy and/or Circuitcity and checking out some of these cameras and several different laptops before you make a decision on buying.
