Answer
It truly depends on what kind of photo you are taking. Are you taking a landscape or cityscape? Photos of people and action? Are you looking for a point & shoot or an SLR?

On the point and shoot level I suggest any higher end Olympus or Nikon. I've worked as a camera specialist and those are the two that I would buy for myself. I have purchased the Olympus 790SW & 1030SW, it is waterproof, shockproof and sand proof. It takes wonderful nights/evening images. On a vacation to Hawaii I was using my little Olympus and a friend was shooting with a higher end Canon (non-slr) - which was twice as "advanced" but my photos were easier to take (I didn't have to try three times for the same shot) and overall they turned out nicer, especially the evening photos.

On the SLR side of things I would suggest Nikon - heads above the rest. There is a reason that NASA uses Nikon. The sensors are better suited for low-light situations. Having shot the same events (live music) with the three major brands (Nikon, Canon & Sony) I'll suggest the Nikon every time. I'll personally never recommend the Sony, while they did a great job with the hardware, the user interface still pales in comparison to their Minolta predecessor. Canon is a good camera too, but better suited to action photography where speed rather than clarity are of importance.

It is all personal. So in answer to your question, with the limited information given:
Best quality night images:
SLR: Nikon
Point & Shoot: Olympus 1030sw

Good Luck!

Which Type of Digital Camera is Better?

Z. J.

Nikon (Ex.- Coolpix S600, Coolpix S550)

or

Olympus (Ex.- Stylus 790 SW, Stylus 850 SW)

Or Canon? I'd prefer a Nikon or an Olympus. Should I get a Canon instead of these?

Answer
Nikon, Olympus, and Canon are all some of the best camera brands on the market today. Well, here's my opinion

http://www.amazon.com/Olympus-Stylus-790SW-Waterproof-Orange/dp/B000UW3DB6/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1213048575&sr=1-4
that's an all around, great digital camera, and it's waterproof, freeze proof, and crush proof camera, and i think that'll be pretty hard to find on a nikon point and shoot camera. And i think it'll be a good camera if you plan to use it in the snow and in the water, and may drop it. ( that's the 790 SW ), and it has seven megapixels

http://imaging.nikon.com/products/imaging/lineup/digitalcamera/coolpix/s600/index.htm
and that's the s600, sure it's ten megapixels, but it doesn't have a shockproof, waterproof, freeze proof, invisible casing, sure it may have better quality pictures, but if it drops that's it. But, if you're not going to drop it, it'll be a good choice. But, not as functional.

So, i'd say that the olympus is better because it is freeze proof, and all of that. And, you're not going to get that with nikon, so get the olympus. It's the best

Olympus,
Nathan

Oh, and when it comes to canon, it's a good brand of cameras, but it can't compare to nikon and olympus in the price class, canon is a good camera, but doesn't always float my bloat ::P
