I am going scuba diving in a month and need to take some underwater photos. I am considering buying a hard plastic case for a digital camera which run around $250. Or I am thinking about trying these soft plastic cases that run around $30. Has anyone used either of these before? Did the photos turn out okay? I will be going in shallow water, probably no deeper than 60 feet. Do you think I need an extra flash to take good pictures?
Thanks.

Answer
You get what you pay for. It's your camera. Personally I'd spend whatever it takes to keep that camera safe and able to take decent shots.
As for a flash, you'll probably find that you'll want to put a piece of tape over the flash if there's no option for turning it off. Most of the time, a flash will produce back scatter in images ( looks like a snow storm) as the light from the flash hits suspended particles in the water and bounces back. If your camera and housing allow it, the use of what's called a strobe will be better. It's a type of flash that's mounted and pointed off to the side, reducing back scatter.

How deep can I go underwater with a disposable camera ?

Canon does not support an underwater housing for my A560. The alternative is a cheap plastic brand that I don't trust. So, since I don't have more money to spend, I was looking into disposable cameras, but most of them are rated mostly up to 20 feet. Is there any brand that can go up to 60 feet ?

Answer
Not disposables. I'll bet that if you talk to a canon Rep, you'll find that the 570IS and your camera may very well both use a similar housing (WPDC12). Their dimensions are the same except in width ( off by .1) which may not matter depending on how the camera is mounted in the housing and all the controls appear to also be the same and in the same locations. It would just be a tad odd for Canon to manufacture a housing for the camera under and the camera over, your own model and not support yours.
For that matter, Ike Lite ( if you want to spend the bucks for a serious housing) likely has done the same thing and it's 570IS housing may also work with your A560. Doesn't hurt to ask them. I know the layouts of the Ike Lites and those housings have room to spare in every dimension. The controls are pretty flexible as well.
