can you put an ordinary digital camera in a waterproof case, and will the seal stop the water from getting in to the camera case and damaging it or do you have to buy an actual waterproof camera and case all together?

There are cases that are watertight, just make sure it's made for your particular brand of camera.
There are also cameras that are waterproof and are meant to go down several feet into the water. They are usually yellow and have thicker seals and cases for this. But they can be expensive.

i dont like pentax WP-series and i already have the WPi. is there another make, olympus? any others? and how much are they. (in pounds please)

Bushnell makes an outdoors water resistant camera, looks durable yellow or green & black it costs less than the pentax w30 and much less than the Olympus. Otherwise if you plan on going underwater the Olympus is rated for 33 feet about 10 meters! I am also looking - undecided. Pentax is the cheapest so far for waterproof - unfortunately.
