I would say research your options shop around and ask questions about interesting products to qualified store personell who know digital photography they can narrow down your wishlist from 100 cameras to just 3 or 4 if they know the following
where do you intend to use the camera - some cameras are
built to last and are heavy duty also sometimes have rubber casing to prevent interior damage if it happens to fall and land on the ground others are water resistant or waterproof
what are you mainly taking pictures of and when - if it is mostly scenery or landscapes and buildings you can get away with a digital camera but if it is fast moving or moves you need a digital camera that allows you to create a movie also consider if you will be using it mainly in the late afternoon early evening you might want to just get a digital camera with flash
some other things to consider is pixel quality also known as megapixels if you get a 1.4 megapixel camera you will have average to decent quality pictures if you have an 8 - 12 megapixel camera you will get better quality pictures but it will be more expensive for the camera because of the capabilities but also when you upload the pictures to your computer the filesize of each picture will be noticeably larger as a result for instance
1.4 megapixel digital camera @ 1 picture = 670 kb versus
6 - 12 megapixel digital camera @ 1 picture = 5.9 - 10 megabytes per picture
the last thing you will want to consider is do you want extra space on your camera to hold additional pictures on top of what can be taken? if so then a digital camera with a SD card slot may be a good choice for you since you can expand the memory by up to 1 - 2 gigs of memory this will allow 9999 pictures instead of the usual 1 to 2 test photos
if this information helps great! and have fun with the world of photography be sure to check out photobucket as a means to store your pictures and share them with friends

What is the best HD, waterproof, audio input accessible, video camera currently available?
Allen
I'm looking for a relatively portable "all-around" camera with high battery life and, preferably, high-capacity flash memory usage. Something I can attach to the hood of a car, then take into a pool, and finally record a simple podcast with... Pricing isn't too much of an issue, but I'm not really looking for a top-end professional cam. Something under the $1,000.00 mark or even the $600.00 mark would be great. But, does such a cam even exist? I've been looking around for a while and just can't seem to find one with all the mentioned featured.

All the affordable waterproof cameras are P&S cameras so they will definitely cost less than your $1,000 budget
The drawbacks of the two cameras listed above is that they 1) do not have an auto-focus lens, rather a Fixed Focus (2ft/.6m â â) lens and 2) have NO optical zoom. These two factors will lead to rather poor optical performance of those cameras. Of the two, the GoPro would be the best match for now .. until a better lens system is designed for the GoPro camera system or a major steps up and designs such a camera with the features you want.
Here is a rather verbose explanation of that you want, need and the availability of such cameras.
* Battery life will limit you to finding cameras that use Li-ion batteries, but P&S cameras are not known for being able to shoot over about 350 shots per charge (DSLR's have capacities with one battery up to 1,000 shots per change, more if used with a battery grip)
* All current P&S cameras can use up to 16 gb memory cards, many 32 gb.
* All P&S cameras have a video feature and some even claim to shoot in HD, however HD under these conditions only means that they can produce a 1920 x 1080 pixel image (about 2 mp of the existing sensor). They cannot be compared to a broadcast quality 3-CCD HD video camera or the amazing new Red One modular video camera.
* Now the problem. To engineer a waterproof camera and add a waterproof audio port is not yet on the drawing boards.
The cameras that have that ability are DSLR's and are not waterproof unless you are willing to buy a $1,500 or more waterproof case. It then is no longer "portable" in any sense of the term.
Here is one of the sturdy waterproof housings you would need to buy to put an already $1,700 DSLR in to accomplish the underwater/waterproof requirement. Oh, and don't for get a lens.

So, you see, waterproof cameras are still being developed by some camera makers. The first were and are all P&S cameras; the Olympus SW series, followed later by their "Tough" series camera, the Pentax underwater and now a single Canon the D10.
