I'm leaving for my vacation on Sunday. I plan on visiting the Cascades and OceanWorld, and will also go snorkeling, parasailing, jet-skiiing, etc. Are there any tips you can give me that you wish you knew when you were there? For example, things to bring along, times to go, etc.

If you remain at the resort, it's the off-season for malaria. If you'll go on a trip off-resort, wear bug spray with 20+% DEET and start a prescription for doxycycline 1day before you go and 4 weeks after returning ($4 generic at Kroger's).
Don't drink tap water. Ice is up to you, but DR does not have clean water supplies.
Have $10 cash ready when you arrive at the airport for the 'visa fee'.
Don't even think about driving a car -- everyone involved in any accident goes to jail for two days or more while they hash things out, the roads are disastrous and the drivers are lunatics.
Have the hotel get you a cab -- thieves (even among cabbies) are common. One trick; a non-air-conditioned cab has windows rolled down, stops at a light, cyclist reaches in, takes valuables. Wear seat belts - you don't need avoidable medical problems in a foreign country. Thieves on scooters rip off purses and such. Avoid public transportation if you don't want to get robbed or pick-pocketed. Exposed jewelry, cameras, cellphones, backpack, fanny pack, etc. scream "rob me!" You're going to a third-world country with remote plush resorts for foreigners; behave accordingly. There are limited reports of crooked police officers who demand cash for trumped-up charges.
Many all-inclusive hotels have a ridiculous, enforced dress code to use the nice restaurants - check before you leave (especially men). Ask lots of questions about restaurant reservations or activity times and restrictions or you may not get in. Call the hotel on their 800- number or use Skype if your calls aren't free, or just keep them short. Don't call them 11AM-4PM their time - they're busy.
Get rubber-soled beach shoes ($10-$20) if you'll swim in the ocean. Dive into big waves rather than stand and wait for them to knock you over or you WILL get tossed and scraped raw.
You can't get into the DR or US without your passport. Spread lots of photocopies of your passport ID page throughout your luggage & carry-on's. If it's lost or stolen, it'll be a lot easier to get things fixed. Use a traveler's passport wallet that hangs on your neck under your clothing. Your photocopies are useless to anyone else, but US passports are pure gold for thieves.
Check your health insurance to see if you're covered in DR, call your banks to make your ATM / credit cards work and ask them about fees, exchange rate, per centage, minimums. Some are nearly free (AMEX), some are absurd. (One of my cards charges 3%, with $10 minimum, so that $8 lunch would cost me $18.) Safest way is to get cash from the ATM in the hotel lobby, and you'll get local currency at the best exchange rate (besides any fees). Thieves use tools to jam and retrieve your card elsewhere. Check your invoices carefully for months after you return -- they'll add fake credit card charges much later, so cash may be a good plan. Never let your card out of your sight.
