underwater camera suggestions?

flower

what underwater camera would you recommend and why, be it and actual underwater camera, or one that requires a separate housing? if it helps i would be shooting mainly action shots (surfing/kite surfing) but also want the option to shoot macro? any suggestions?

Answer
Waterproof cameras scare me because I hear FAR too often about leaks, even when they are brand new.

Apparently it is very easy to catch a tiny hair or some other object in one of the seals (e.g. the battery / memory card door), and that is enough to let water in.

I'd suggest buying extra warranty protection and trying it out pretty much right away if you intend to go swimming with it.

Also, waterproof cameras are most often little P&S ones with tiny sensors, so don't expect any amazing results from them.

Does anyone have the Canon waterproof camera?

I am thinking of buying this, but I have a few questions:

Do they take good pictures? I am kinda trying to be a photographer so would like to be able to take really good pictures. I already have a canon digital that's 10 mega pixels that can take great pics.

Can you zoom out far?

Does it take detailed close ups?

is it worth the money?

And any other opinions on it would be great, thanks!

Answer
If you're taking photographs, you ARE a photographer...but this camera is not aimed at the professional market.
Check the quality of the pictures at the D10 flickr group (there's always a flickr group)...

Click on a thumbnail to go to the photo's page and then on "Actions" and select "all sizes" for a big image.

Not a particularly long zoom range...remember that the zoom has to be contained within the waterproof case. All the waterproof cameras have wide-to-short-telephoto zooms.

Macro lets you get to an inch or so from your subject.

Yes, it's worth the money (though I'd prefer an Olympus Tough).
