What is digital camera underwater housing?

I'm taking scuba lessons and I'm wondering can I use my digital camera and just buy a "house" for it or must I buy an underwater camera and a house?

Depending on what model you ahve there may already be a housing available for it. Have you tried searching the model? I found one for my Nikon.

For a 13y.o girl who had a camera since the fourth grade, but it wasn't shock proof, she dropped it and wants an underwater camera but must also function above water. And it just go at least 15 ft. under water. Also plz be have choose a shock proof one, up to $200. Thnx=)
And also needs to take video, thnx!=)
