waterproof cameras uk image

I'm going away snowboarding this winter and am going to buy a new camera to take. I have seen various 'tough' ones being sold, but are they necessary? Any camera suggestions?!
Answer
The Fujifilm XP10 is shockproof (dropped from 1m), waterproof (3m) and freezeproof (-10 degrees) making it ideal for winter sports like snowboarding. It will certainly handle the conditions better than a standard compact.
The Olympus uTough and Pentax Optio W90 are also similar.
Personally I pefer the Pentax http://www.pentax.co.uk/en/group/5/product/16427/body/overview/Photo_Cameras.html

Answer
Most 'proper' camera housings are camera specific and won't work on just any camera, and, as has already been said, are also very expensive. Usually only the top end cameras are provided for, nobody's going to spend $2000.00 plus on a housing for a $300.00 camera.
There are cheaper alternatives, with depth restrictions, available for some point and shoot cameras. Here's a link to a few suggestions, again they are camera specific, these are for Nikon, but Canon and Pentax are available too..

Most digital camera manufacturers offer a 'waterproof' camera in their range usable to a shallow depth of a couple meters or so and offer a much cheaper alternative to a housing. Here's one, but Pentax,Canon and Fuji all do higher spec ones

Finally there are some sites that offer DIY alternatives, very much a user beware for most of them,

I don't think I'd risk my camera inside a condom!!!.
