I just recently bought it, and I have tried it underwater in a pool, but I wasn't sure if it could be in like sand and salt(water)
(It's a waterproof, shockproof, freezeproof camera)

Yes, it should be just fine because on the Olympus 850 SW webpage it says...
"WATERPROOF (10FT).
Innovative waterproof seals and gaskets allow you to take underwater movies and amazing pictures in a pool, lake or ocean."
and..."The perfect camera for a trip to the great outdoors, the airtight design makes the camera impervious to dust, dirt and other particles."
and..."Whether you're taking pictures on the beach, at night, behind glass or even underwater, there's a Shooting Mode that's ideal for the occasion".
However, you should still take care when using it at the beach...don't go dropping it or burying it in the sand or anything.
Have a look on...pages 62 and 66...of your instruction manual, on how best to care for, clean and maintain the camera (especially after a trip to the beach). Looking after it correctly will ensure that the camera remains in good condition for a long time.

I am thinking of buying this camera for my boyfriend for his birthday but haven't found a lot of reviews. My primary reason for choosing this camera is its claim to be waterproof/shockproof/freezeproof. My boyfriend is very active and enjoys being on the water and snow skiing. He is not really into photography so image quality is not as important to me as the durability, but I don't want to buy him a camera that doesn't take good pictures. Can someone share their experience with this camera? Thanks!

I own its cousin, the 850, as a back-up camera that lives in my purse.
Being a little P&S, it has all the usual limitations like shutterlag, image noise and low light issues, but otherwise there is nothing wrong with it.
Sounds like a perfect camera for HIM.
