What kind of camera has.....?

ramblertoo

What kind of camera has these things (any camera):
Is shockproof
Is water proof
Is dust proof (or basically weather proof)
And has a high optical zoom (like 15x or something)

But if you can't find something that has all of these things, could anyone tell me if there is a camera that has a high optical zoom and is water proof (at the least)? Please help..... 10 points for good answers, really.

Answer
There are a lot of ruggedized cameras that are waterproof, shockproof, etc as you require - except they do not have high power optical zooms.

The reason is that the lens mechanisms must be internal to the camera - meaning the lens does not stick out. The lenses on these cameras are actually vertical with a mirror at the top which provides an exit path for the lens. Kind of like a periscope but internal to the camera.

This is required to maintain a waterproof seal on the lens. And, since the lens is internal to the camera (not sticking out) it can be made shockproof. Both of these factors mean lenses have to be under 0x power.

If you want a high power zoom, you would have to go with a 3rd party underwater enclosure and a standard camera. But this would result in a bulky camera, and since is it not a ruggedized camera, it still would not be shockproof..

Besides high power zooms have optical issues. It has been my experience that the long zoom lenses have sharpness issues along their focal length.

And you will not need a high power zoom anyway for underwater cameras as you will only be taking photos for perhaps 20 to 30ft away in even the clearest of water.

You just won't be able to use all of the capability of a high power zoom underwater. I have been in water with my cameras and could only go 5ft.

The Nikon 100AW, Olympus 810, and others are good choices for a ruggedized camera. I used to own a camera housing, but it was too bulky, so now I own an Olympus 8010 ruggedized camera. It works pretty well for my needs.

Answer
It's a nice camera, if you need a waterproof camera or are looking for something particularly "stylish". If you want something with more waterproof capabilities, the Canon PowerShot D10 is rated to 33 feet (vs 10 feet for the Fujifilm).

We actually suggested the Fujifilm in our Buyer's Guide. http://www.techlicious.com/buyers-guide/digital-cameras/
