are any of the "waterproof" digital cameras made by companies such as canon, olympus, etc... suitable for scuba diving or do u need a case?

"Waterproof" generally only means that it can take a little rain or ocean spray and be ok.

While I have seen some cameras that are cheap and claim to be for underwater purposes, I'm a bit wary of them. They usually aren't from reputable camera manufacturers. (Generally when something looks too good to be true, it usually is.)

For major brand names, these are usually a bit more expensive. "Waterproof" never means that it can be immersed in water. You'll have to get an "underwater" case for your camera, or purchase a camera that is specifically designed for underwater use.

Durable, highly waterproof quality camera?

Hi, I'm going to be working in Jamaica for the next couple years and I need a camera I can have with me at all times. Lightweight is a must; especially since my only two modes of travel are going to be walking and boat, and I will be moving around A LOT. Besides the boats and inevitable rain you can expect near pretty constant 100% humidity.
While the pictures don't need to be professional quality they can't look terrible either.
Suggestions under 500 USD please and if you know of something significantly cheaper that would fit please post!
Oh ya compact is essential, no DSLR's please.

I have an Olympus 6020. Its waterproof, crushproof, shock proof and freezeproof. I went on my honeymoon to the Bahamas and surrounding areas. I took it in the ocean every chance I got. It takes great pictures and I love it. They're about $200. And well worth it.
